Welcome to
the February 2016 edition
Love is deaf. You can’t just tell someone you love them. You have to show it.
Doncasters brand new independent pet shop OPENING TIMES MON - SAT - 10AM - 5PM SUN- 11AM-3PM
- UNKNOWN With Valentine’s day approaching it got me thinking about love and what it actually means. Not just in the context of partnerships but also with the people around us; our children, our friends and our community. It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s the thoughts and efforts that go a long way. Random acts of kindness, however small, have the power to at the very least put a small smile on someone’s face. In the US they will be celebrating Random Acts of Kindness day on 17th February, but maybe this is something better carried out every day, whenever the opportunity arises? If everyone was kind to the people around them what a different world we would live in. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February perhaps you could have a go at extending some love. Late 2015 brought the news that the Tour De Yorkshire would be winging its way through this area on Saturday 30th April. This could be a huge opportunity for our local communities, drawing people from other parts of the area and much farther afield to watch the race. If you are planning activities on that day do please keep me in touch so that we can include a full list of local events in the March and April issues and ensure everyone knows where the action is taking place! The March issue will be delivered to you late February. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 12th February.
Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.
Best wishes, Paula x paula@todaypublications.co.uk | t: 01302 969696

Cause for a Cuppa! Our RCBC (church) family will remember the story about the 2 lads walking along the shore by the ocean. They came to an area covered in starfish. Both being sensitive to animal life, they were quite upset, knowing that by the time the sun gets hot they would die. The first lad picked up one of the starfish and hurled him back into the ocean. The second gave him a puzzled look … “What difference does that make? There are thousands here!” His reply was on the mark … “Maybe so, but it made a difference to that one” Good to see you again and hope the new year has started well. Today the importance of “the one” was brought back to me. As a minister in the village, it is EASY to focus on the crowd, forgetting that the crowd is made up of many of “the one”s.
I was speaking with someone (as you do :)) about their teen child and the battle with a particular mental illness. We had talked before so this wasn’t the first time. But I hadn’t realised the length and depth of the “treacle” the family has been trying to walk through. It has now been years and the child has not been able to experience a normal life as a young person. As we spoke, the love and devotion to their child was clear. But the dilemma of not knowing how to sort the situation seemed like it was reaching the point of utter frustration. The medical world was not offering much in the way of answers. As the conversation came to an end, a new care worker was mentioned with a note of hope for the future. As we said “good-bye”, Cause for a Cuppa was brought up and the times of considering nipping by for a brew and a chat about the situation. I was a bit overcome by that parting comment (thinking they would entrust me with such an important part of their lives), nearly not able to do what I had facing me in the next 10 minutes. (But got through it just fine.)
To this particular person and anyone else who might be in a similar boat … though the size, shape, colour and particulars of the boat will certainly be different, the little ending of our monthly chat is not just a tag line, it is a heartfelt invitation. Sometimes it just helps to chat with someone who is not so close to the situation.. You may not be comfortable chatting with me. That is fine. You may be in a situation that you just need to talk with someone. Be willing to make that need known to your doctor … friend … trusted neighbour. Maybe even you know of someone who is battling a situation already in 2016. You can be that lifeline. I love the fact that even though Jesus dealt with the crowds many times, He never forgot about the one. As always the kettle is on and the door is open. Thanks for hanging out together a bit and will see you again next month!

What happens when you’re hurt? At some point in our lives we will all sustain an injury – cuts, sprains and bruises are all familiar problems. Few patients really understand what is happening to their body at this time and yet understanding the process can help manage these problems effectively.… Incurring an injury means that the tissue fibres are disrupted and bleeding occurs. The amount will depend on the severity of the injury and the type of tissue affected. Quickly following on from this, inflammation will build, typically over a 24-72 hour period. Chemicals are released into the area causing blood vessels to enlarge and become leaky. Several types of cell can then enter the area which will create a clot to stop the bleeding, clean up toxins and debris to prevent infection and begin the rebuilding and repair phase. As you can see, in the context of an injury, this inflammatory process is absolutely essential to the healing process even though the resulting pain, heat, swelling and redness are unpleasant.
One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.
Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain
As the inflammation subsides, the repair process continues with the laying down of scar tissue and the delivery of oxygen and nutrients via newly formed blood vessels. This scar tissue will strengthen and be refined over the ensuing months. This amazing series of events means that in most cases a natural recovery occurs following injury. However, there are many factors that can have a negative impact on healing and act as barriers to recovery. Although the healing process can’t be accelerated, physiotherapy can both eliminate any barriers to recovery and work to promote ideal conditions in which the repair process can occur effectively.

DIXON QUIRK The bench in memorial of Dixon Quirk that can be found near the footpath behind the Parkland Drive area has been in position since 2008. Unfortunately, mindless vandalism has resulted in the small dedication plaque being removed from the bench for the 2nd time. Sadly it seems that not everyone is able to respect the memories that mean so much to somebody, even if not to them. Let us hope that it lasts longer next time if it is replaced.

W Rachael Blake Update from Councillor
Speeding cars, lorries and parked cars have been among them many concerns raised by residents with me this month. More on work that I have been doing later on, but just an update on things I have mentioned before.
FARRS Link Road – At the time of writing we are a week away from the road closures at Parrots corner at night times which will be a disruption for residents going into/coming back from Town, but thankfully won’t be putting additional traffic on village roads. Also there will be disruption due to resurfacing on West End Lane on Sundays. FARRS will be completed/open at the end of February – weather dependent is the latest response I have received from them. Buses – the responses to the consultation that closed at the end of December are being considered with most people happy about the proposed changes, and the new bus service to Lakeside using the new road. The new services are due to start in May. Police Station parking – I have been in touch with the Inspector again and he has asked for the staff to move the vehicles off the road and he is also looking at other places to park in the area. Missing Lollipop Lady - Unfortunately we haven’t had anyone getting children and parents safely across the road at St Joseph’s due to a number of reasons and DMBC is now looking to recruit casual crossing attendants across Doncaster. As a casual crossing attendant you will only be called upon to cover short term absences or sickness when the permanent warden is unable to work. You will be offered a competitive rate of pay and full training and the chance to play an important role in your community. For more details please contact Nancy Higgins on 01302 737086. Appointments are made subject to a satisfactory enhanced criminal record bureau check and medical. Litter - Complaints about litter continue to come to me and one resident has suggested having a regular village litter pick with residents, DMBC and the Parish Council getting involved. I know there are residents that collect litter every day around the village and thank you for doing this. Please get in touch if you would like to help.

Lorries - The number of lorries coming into the village is increasing along with concerns about what is happening on Bankwood Lane and how this affects residents’ lives. One resident said he had counted over 60 in 20 minutes which we should not have to put up with. This is a real concern for many residents. Myself, other councillors, the Parish Council and Caroline Flint MP are all working together to get this problem resolved but we need your help to do this and unfortunately it isn’t something that can be changed overnight.
D
What are your concerns? Would you be happy to let us know what you are seeing/hearing? Please text me; ring and leave a message or email. Quad Bikes on Brodsworth - Quad bikes are causing a huge problem to residents. Residents affected, will have received an update from the Area Team about the action that is going to be taken to stop this. Your DMBC Area Team (formerly Neighbourhood Team) are based at Holmescarr and can assist with anti-social behaviour problems as well as the Well-Being service and support to families. Tel: 734188 Unfortunately, I don’t have enough space to update you on everything that I have been involved in or include all of the great things that have been happening in the village, but please do contact me if you would like more information on anything I have written about, think there is something I should be working on and most important, please get in touch about lorries in the village. How to Contact Me I have 2 surgeries in the village but please contact me anytime by phone, text or email. Last Tuesday of every month – 3.15 – 4.45pm at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street – 2nd Friday of every month – 4.45 – 5.30 at Miners Welfare Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251 Twitter: @CllrRachaelB Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Best wishes

Howard Webb, from Rotherham, who is Patron of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is encouraging people to think of the charity and offer support through various sporting activities across the year.
Charity Fundraiser, Sarah Cross said “From our annual Run in the Park event to public events, we want everyone from beginners to experienced fitness fanatics to join Team Weston Park this year and vow to support our work.” “The charity and hospital are facing a growing challenge with the expectation that by 2020, 1 in 2 of us are expected to be affected by cancer in our lifetime. It is only with the support of our dedicated fundraisers who take on selfless challenges for us that we can continue to support the hospital’s vital work and ensure more patients in our region can fight this disease. ” To find out more about joining the cancer charity’s dedicated ‘& Raise’ clubs and for tips to get fit visit the website at: http:// wphcancercharity.org.uk/run_and_raise.html T
Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity raises funds to support world-class research, treatment and care for cancer patients in South Yorkshire and beyond. This year with Howard’s backing, the charity is urging people to pull their trainers on and run, walk or ride to help raise vital funds for the hospital whilst simultaneously improving their own fitness levels. Howard, who got together with the charity’s Mascot, Westie, a few weeks ago, has filmed some short video clips to encourage people to take part in a sporting activity or challenge during 2016. 20

community Hello everyone, it is snowing as I am writing this so I am hoping everyone is warm and safe. The weather is really cold at the moment but luckily all our dogs and cats are kept warm in their houses and cat pens. All our new kennel block is now up and running and we are so proud of our new buildings. A big thank you to Adoption for Pets who funded this project for us. We have an appeal on Face Book at the moment for a little cross breed puppy called Tim he was a litter of 7 and it transpired that he has a heart condition. The little chap will struggle to reach maturity without this operation. After a specialist vets appointment that cost £800 we decided to go ahead with the operation, however the operation will be £2000 which we know is a lot of money but we think this pup with a steely character deserves a chance. So we are now asking for donations to get this little pup back on track and give him a bright future. If you would like to make any small or large donation please either call us or take a look at our Face Book page.
Finding a forever home
arrange this for you at our Sanctuary, we charge £12.00 for this service. We have recently reunited a cat with its owner after going missing for quite some time; this was in fact because it was Micro chipped. So the process does work. We are arranging a fundraising evening at The Ship at Newington it will be a Race Night on the 25th Feb first race to start at 7.30. The tickets are £5 and pie and peas will be included. Tickets available from the venue and the Sanctuary or you could just pay on the door. However it would make life easier if they knew how many people would want pie and peas. Please support us it will be a fun evening and you may make your fortune. Look forward to seeing you there. We will also be arranging a Body Shop party in our reception area in March and I will let you know all about that in the next issue so watch this space!
At the moment we have 50 dogs in our Sanctuary, lots of cross breeds and even pedigrees. They are with us for various reasons, but they all need that special someone to make them part of a loving family life. We had lots of dogs abandoned over the New Year period. There were at least 6 dogs tied to our gate at the bottom of the lane during this period. All with no history at all. However better tied to our gates than let out on a motorway as one little dog was. A kind motorist stopped on the A1 as he had seen a dog running and causing serious havoc. He did manage to catch it and put it in his cab. We were called and came to the rescue of this lucky little dog. He was only with us a couple of weeks before a lovely family adopted him. Micro chipping is law from this April, so if you do have a dog you will need to arrange for this to be done. Apart from anything else if you do become parted from your beloved pet you will be able to be reunited quickly. It is a very quick procedure and we can
Last but not least, we have amazing news. Pipers Garage in Tickhill have donated a van to us that they have also paid to have sign written. We were absolutely desperate for a new van, without transport we cannot function. They came to our rescue and a very BIG thank you from us all. Please come and see us, whether it’s to take a look at our Shop Pet area that we have in reception or to look for a pet that will share your life. Maybe you would like to drop off old towels, blankets, black bin bags, wash powder, washing up liquid or long lasting treats. All of these will make life so much easier for the Sanctuary. Items like this still need to come out of our funds.

That is how they came into the care of Mayflower. Since then a lot has happened to these little guys and as you can see they have grown (a lot !!) Two of them have found new homes and have settled brilliantly but the remaining 4 are still patiently waiting. Black cats are always overlooked which is a shame as they are just as loving as the ‘prettier ones. They are a little nervous when you first meet them but are very loving once they have had time to adjust.

He doesn’t like cars, trains etc. He may be best suited to a quiet household with a big garden and quiet country walks. He is the perfect dog inside he just need guidance and training to go outside on walks. We work with dog listeners who will help you along the way. HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home fees “We’ve worked hard and saved all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it all?”
Does this sound familiar? “ We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children” These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.
Care Costs If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills. Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.
Also available: APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.
Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now. 24

Rossington-villagelife.co.uk and Old Rossington Photos Happy New Year and our resolution is to encourage more of you to join in capturing thoughts and memories on both the website and the Facebook page. Keith Scott, who owns the Facebook page – Old Rossington Photos – has spent a good few months updating the information attached to the photos he has collected, and there are well over 3000 of them, and gradually we are adding these to the website so that they are easier to locate than from Facebook. They also are being separated into People and Places to add more ease to viewing them. Keith would like more of you to dig into your albums or photo boxes to add to the collection and share your photos with the other people using the pages and site. People seem to particularly like school or club photos so they can spot themselves and family and friends and get some feedback on asking ‘Where are they now?’ Get looking and join the page if you have not already done so: there are well over 3200 on there, of all ages. For the website, we are looking for more people to send us articles to upload. If you are not good at writing, we can take recordings, or work from your notes. Just let us know. Have a look on the website for existing articles and you will see some poems and items about bygone days and Rossington from the Writers group. They are from 2 of that group which is into its 27th year of being active. They are not seeking new members because of the way they run their meetings, but you might be inspired to form a group of similarly minded people who can share your work on a regular basis. We are keen to hear from people who have stories about sporting heroes from the village or those with artistic talents, such as already on the website, and what about the inspirational leaders you gained from as you grew up? A forthcoming article will be about Arthur Green, who was recognised with a medal for his contribution to Scouting in Rossington, and the Scouts have copies of his book which they sell for fund-raising. It is a good read and also has some great photos of people you may recognise. We meet fortnightly at Holmescarr café at 6 pm, and our February meetings will be 8th and 22nd, on Mondays. You are welcome to join us. Get in touch with Keith via the Facebook page or phone Elaine Spencer in 07771 672561. T

Dear Friends,
The New You
I am writing this article in mid-January so I’m still thinking about things we have resolved to do to make us ‘new’ or ‘fresh’ in the year 2016.
suggest to you that spending time by meditating on the Holy Scriptures and praying to God will help you to think about your behaviour or thoughts.
Some of us are still evaluating our past and wondering what we can do to achieve the best for this year. Others are thinking of how best we can do things differently in order to maintain the best we have achieved so far.
These will help you to consider what you do or say and change the direction of your life in a positive way this year.
Some facts come to my mind and they are based on the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Romans in the bible. Chapter 12 versus 1 and 2 from ‘The Message’ translation state, “So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life - your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life - and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you”. The Apostle encourages us first to be ‘original’ as we engage with our culture. We are not to copy what we do not understand. Or, we are not to think that because every person is doing it or says so it is the right thing for us to do. Rather, it is best to ask God to help us in our decision-making. As God reveals to us his plans, do have the will to adjust in order to free our minds of any difficult issues. He can reveal his plans through the good books we read, the good conversations we have with other people, the programmes we watch or listen to, and so on. We all need a bit of transformation and God does it best for us. He will help us to change by the way we think. In addition, as a Christian, I wonder if I can 34

The following prayer was helpful to me a few days ago and I wonder if you can own it and use it as often times as possible. God, I praise you with all that I am, knowing that my strength comes from joy in you now and always. I praise you for your mercy, for forgiving my sins. Remind me that mercy always triumphs over judgment and that only you, the God of all grace, will restore me and make me strong. Renew my heart and let your gentle Spirit lead me down the right path. Please grant me peace in my heart. May my burdens lead me to rest in you as I grow closer to you each day. Let me fill my mind with truth, righteousness, beauty and all things worthy of praise. Thank you God for your promise to watch over me always and to hold me up with your victorious right hand. Thank you God for giving me a hope and a future. Let me take every action in the coming year fixing my eyes on Jesus. Amen. (Written by Melody; http://www. dayspring.com/articles/a-new-years-prayer) Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

Rossington Parish Council Welcome to this month’s Parish Council News DMBC is due to carry out essential carriageway surfacing works on West End Lane, Rossington commencing on Sunday 24th January 2016. The works involve the excavation and resurfacing of the existing carriageway from FARRRS up to the junction of Grange Lane. Surfacing works are to be carried out on Sundays only under localised road closures. We anticipate 6 Sundays to complete the works but 8 road closures have been booked in lieu of inclement weather. The surfacing works are to be carried out in designated sections each visit to minimise disruption as best possible. Each designated section will have a road closure with no access available on the specified date. A signed diversion for motorists will be in operation during this time. All works in section 1 that effect the access to the industrial estate on Bankwood Lane are to be carried out on nights (18:00 – 06:00) to have the least impact on any businesses that requires access via Bankwood Lane. There will also be works carried out during the week under temporary traffic signals between the hours of 09:30 – 15:30 to replace the large quantity of damaged manholes on West End Lane. If you have any queries regarding any of the above or if you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact Chris Pinder, Highways Design Engineer, Design Team Regeneration & Environment - Tel No : 01302 734962. CRAIG KELLY, DONCASTER CULTURE AND LEISURE TRUST (DCLT)
Have you consulted with the users of the Swimming Baths on the timetable of sessions?
In 2014/15 there was a significant decrease in funding from DMBC reducing the activities being able to be offered at Rossington Baths. The gym and training went to the Sports Section of Rossington All Saints Academy which DCLT manage. The Parish Council agreed to a grant of £20,000 for that financial year to subsidise children’s swimming sessions, a bit of marketing and a few improvements. However there are little reserves for further repairs. DMBC has agreed funding for a further year but DCLT is not sure what will happen after that.
ANSWER: Yes but we’ve had to shed most of our workforce resulting in fewer sessions but we review this on a monthly basis.
ANSWER: There have been various issues, we’ve done temporary repairs and have regular surveys done so there are no problems at the moment. We are putting in preventative measures to extend the life of the building.
My Doncaster Mobile App. – Further information on this smartphone app that can be downloaded for free and allows you to submit reports to DMBC. When reporting issues you can accurately map and photograph the area of concern. The issues you can report are: Abandoned Vehicles, Anti-Social Behaviour, Bins (Litter & Dog Foul), Bollards, Congestion, Crossings & Kerbs, Damaged Manhole Covers, Dead Animals, Pavement Defects, Potholes, Road Markings, Spillages, Street Furniture, Trip Hazard, Dog Fouling, Dumped Rubbish/Fly Tipping, Flooding, Graffiti, Gully Issues, Litter, Needles (Hypodermic), Parks & Play Equipment, Street Lights, Street Signs, Structural Issues, Traffic Calming Measures, Tree Issues. Residents can now report directly to DMBC on this App.
QUESTION: Are more young people using the Swimming Baths?
Rossington Parish Council Contact Details
QUESTION: What is the viability of the Swimming Baths, isn’t the celling corroding?
ANSWER: It’s £1 for Rossington residents which is very good. We agreed a grant of £20,000 but invoiced you for £15,000.
CONTACTS
QUESTION: Is the Youth Centre under your remit?
Parish Clerk: Anne M Hammond, available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
ANSWER: No.
anne@rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk
QUESTION: Does there have to be one adult to one child?
Deputy Parish Clerk: Zoe Attridge, available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
ANSWER: If the child is under 8 years of age then yes. QUESTION: Do you get much interest in ASA Swimming lifesaving courses? ANSWER: Yes. QUESTION: What about linking to health issues such as obesity? ANSWER: Lots of kids can’t swim. There are quarries around Rossington which are very dangerous. We want to raise awareness but also offer children the opportunity to learn to swim before they go with school.
zoe@rossingtonparishcouncil.org.uk TEL: 01302 864731 Rossington Memorial Hall, McConnell Crescent, Rossington, Doncaster DN11 0PL Rossington Parish Council have a Facebook page: ‘Rossington Parish Council 2016’ please take a look and let us know your views, ideas, etc.
QUESTION: Have you put more sessions on e.g. at dinner time? ANSWER: They were poorly attended so had to pull some sessions. The numbers go up and down. At the meeting with the Clerk and Deputy Clerk ideas were suggested such as setting up a not for profit group to access funding for a kayaking club and a visit to Askern Swimming Baths Kayaking Club. Supporting young people as volunteers to access training so they can volunteer for the club and the like.

garden view

What to get the gardener in your life this Valentine’s Day? Want a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than cut flowers, and many gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all the paper, yards of cellophane, and airmiles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a good option. Potted plants are more suggestive of permanent affection, and on a purely practical level, they give much better value for money! Jasmine, stephanotis and gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem with rose bushes is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener I guarantee they will not mind. In fact they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. 38

Myrtle is another plant you might like to consider. It’s been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom at the moment try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. Most florists will stock a range of flowering plants so you won’t need to head off your high street to find something suitable. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentallyfriendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now. With just a little thought you can come up with the perfect gift for the gardener in your life. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Tickhill and District Lions Our January report was written to meet magazine deadlines inn early December when Santa’s sleigh runs had hardly started. Looking back we are happy that with the responsible and cheerful help of Scout Explorers and their leaders and a number of ‘Friends of Lions’ we were able to let as many people as possible know that Santa was on his way if they had not already heard him in the distance. Many thanks to everyone who joined us, especially those on the Clay Flat Lane area route on Saturday 12th December when it poured with rain. Many thanks also to Trevor Reeve and the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Jeep Grand Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh around in fine style. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. On Friday 5th February President Steve Radford and Lion Bryan Winslow will be joining Michelle, the landlady of the Oak, and eighteen others attempting to walk on hot coals to raise Sponsorship in aid of Little Heroes Cancer Trust. Look out for sponsorship forms, there is bound to be one in The Oak, or turn up for a beer on the night and see who gets blisters! Date for your diaries. On Friday 24th June we are holding our second ‘Summer Bash’ in a marquee behind the Scarbrough Arms, featuring live music, good food and real ales served in a private bar. An evening for music lovers and Lions supporters not to miss. Co-operative Local Forums We are currently Piloting a new strategy in the Doncaster area, where we are going back to the roots of The Co-operatives values and principles, and supporting the local communities in which we serve. To do this, we have set up a Co-operative Local Forum in the Doncaster area, encompassing: Armthorpe, Bessacarr, Bawtry, Rossington, Auckley and Cantley The Co-operative Local Forums (CLF) will be at the heart of communities, working hand-in-hand with our food stores and funeral homes. The aim of the CLF are too: • Provide a sounding board for any community ideas you have • Bring local Co-operative members and colleagues together to make good things happen in their local areas • Provide opportunities for members’ voices to be heard by The Co-operative Members’ Council and our businesses We are looking to engage with local people, Cooperative Members and local community groups to see how we may best support the community, and wondered if the CLF would be of interest to you or if you know of anybody who would like to be involved? We are holding our second meeting at Holmescarr Community Enterprise Centre, Grange Lane, Rossington DN11 0LP on Wednesday 9th March 2016 at 7pm and would love as many people to attend as possible for us to work together for the good of our local communities. As this event coincides with Fairtrade Fortnight, and the Co-operative were the original retailer to promote Fairtrade products, we will give a short update of our work with the Fairtrade Association and be including free fair trade tastings of Fairtrade wines and food products at the event. All are welcome and we do hope that you will join us. Please register your interest at doncasterclf@gmail. com or telephone Dot Miller (Member Pioneer) on 07703358889.
