Ryan Blair Exam time is once again upon us. The controversial SATs exams have been completed, and in schools and colleges everywhere students are currently sitting GCSE’s, AS levels and A levels as well as a wide range of other examinations now available to our young people. I have 2 children in the midst of this again this year and can sympathise with all those who can’t wait for exam season to be over! June already 2016 is ying by. We are heading towards the prime time for summer fairs, galas and family fun days, this month and over the next few issues you will ďŹ nd details of many such events on these pages. If you are organising an event this summer then be sure to email details to me. We do take the distribution of the magazines very seriously and have an easy way for people to let us know if they aren’t receiving their copy. If you know of someone who isn’t getting a copy of the magazine or perhaps you picked this copy up from one of our pick up points locally as you don’t get one through your door, then please text ‘1TODAY + your street name’ to 66777 and we will do our best to put that right for you. The July issues will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th June. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

Best wishes,

Mum’s happy she found a place she could call home.

Companionship was top of my mum Dolly’s list when she felt a care home was the next step in her life. With friendship came confidence, happiness and a sense of wellbeing. In fact Mum felt completely at home. Which home did she choose? Runwood. They offered all the care Mum needed and the independence she loved – and of course when Mum’s happy, we’re happy too.

Come and join us for a cup of tea and a look round the home, entirely without obligation.

Runwood are here to do what they do best – Care.

Cause for a Cuppa! Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. Though I know it is now old news but major congratulations to Paula and her team at Today Publications on their 10 year anniversary. I am so honoured to be a little part of it with our monthly visits. June is Father’s Day month, the 19th actually. Doing a bit of research, it looks like my American friends started it all only about 100 years ago. Sonora Dodd wanted a way to honour her Dad for taking care of her when her mother died in childbirth. How about that? Apparently the “correctâ€? gift is a rose ‌ red for a father still living, white if not. Ummm, SUREOHP KHUH $ ČľRZHU ZRQȇW ODVW ORQJ LQ P\ WRRO box. You can’t plug it in. It has no keyboard nor screen. If you kick or throw it, you would destroy it. &DQ ZH SOHDVH KDYH D UH YRWH IRU D QHZ RÉ?FLDO JLIW" For anyone who has been following Cause for a Cuppa over the last few years, you would know that my normal comment on such a day like this is ‌ “This is a time that you would normally think of as good, fun and memorable. But it isn’t that way for everyoneâ€?. Another comment I hear all the time goes something like this. “If I only had a partner/more money/a partner/bigger house/a partner/a car/a partner, then my life would be perfectâ€?. We are very quick to moan about our circumstances, WISHING for something WR EH GLÎ?HUHQW :H RIWHQ WKLQN LI WKLQJV DUH GLÎ?HUHQW then my worries or problems would melt away. Most of you probably also know I am, in reality, a fatherless bloke myself. My Dad/ Mum split when I was 10. What is odd is that I have probably seen my Dad a half dozen times over the last 45 years. What gives? The message I learned was that I was not worthy ‌ or at least I believed that. I don’t have space to go into detail but he just couldn’t be bothered. I recent years I tried a couple times again, but no response. I Messy Church (3:30-5:30)

wrote about a couple of those attempts in this article. I may have failed to report back but there is really nothing to report. Nothing came back in from my letter. Sadly I now think he will go to his grave without knowing his 3 fantastic grandchildren. Have I gone through the, “If only ‌â€? scenario? Sure. I wish I had a relationship with the person I FDOOHG 'DG IRU WKRVH Č´UVW \HDUV $V D 'DG P\VHOI I cannot get my head around why he did a runner. But I have chosen not to dwell on that. At this point it doesn’t matter. I had to learn that I have purpose and value. I had to learn that I am loved by God and others even though the one person who SHOULD be in my corner ‌ wasn’t. There is a bit in the Bible where Paul (Philippians 4:11) speaks about being content in whatever situation we are in. Interestingly enough, he wasn’t at a posh inn at the time but a 1st century prison. So many of us get into a right state at this time of the year because of what we DON’T have. How about trying to focus on what you DO have? If you have children, choose to be the very best Dad or Mum you can be. If you don’t have children, why not consider volunteering to be a Dad/Mum substitute? Big Brother Big Sister is a charitable organisation that hooks up children in need of a “big brother/sisterâ€? to someone who is willing to invest time in them. You could be the Dad/Mum (or big brother/sister) they would never have. It could be a life changing experience for both them and you. Thanks for popping round again. It is always nice to heard your comments, emails, about your own stories. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake As I go into my second year of being a Councillor it’s always good when you can actually see things that have been promised for the villaage. The Iport and Academy are 2 that are now progressing i – more details below. Other things such as Bankwood Lane are taking a lot longer to solve but now that many organisations are working together, some progress is being made, and there is now talk of a longer term solution with direct access to the industrial estate avoiding having to go past houses in the village. Iport - Fellowes, the global manufacturer and marketer of air purification machines, office business machines, record storage, office health and comfort solutions, office and mobile technology accessories, has taken one of the new speculatively built units at iPort, as its new UK headquarters and EU shared service building. Also by the time you read this the co-ordinator will have started work at the Academy which is based at the Welfare and an open day for residents is being planned. It was good to hear at the Parish Council meeting that the training will be available for people looking to get a job but also people wanting to change jobs and needing training to help them do this. Bankwood Lane - Another 2 enforcement notices have been issued to companies on the Industrial estate. The purpose of the enforcement notices is not to stop the businesses from operating but to ensure that they work within the planning permission regulations on which they were given planning permission, which includes permissions such as hours of working. Street Lighting – These have been a problem in quite a few areas – more often than not, the problem is that the DMBC are aware of it, but the problem needs to be fixed by the power supplier. Once a problem like this is reported, the company has 28 days to repair it, although some are repaired more quickly. Please do let me know if you have experienced street lighting problems as there does seem to be an increase in problems. Also, DMBC have introduced new LED lights which last 100 years rather than 6 with the old ones. I have heard various problems – too bright, too dark, not covering the same area as before. They can be adjusted so please get in touch. 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Traffic and speeding - You will have seen more enforcement taking place which is in response to concerns about speeding. Also I met with Highways recently due to residents contacting me about the h increase in traffic ffi and d speeding d that h they h h have experienced since the new road was opened. Highways agreed to survey the traffic and once this has finished I can have discussions with them about what action they are going to take. My surgeries A resident came to my surgery recently and her first question was “what can you as a councillor deal with”? It’s a question that I am often asked and my answer is that we can deal with both individual problems about council services, as well as problems that are affecting a number of residents, or in some cases the whole village. Some of the many individual problems I have dealt with include housing, anti-social behaviour, flooding to properties and social services. Problems affecting many people are areas such as Bankwood Lane, flooding on roads, road safety and local amenities such as the cemetery and play areas. As a councillor promoting the many good things that are happening, and listening to residents about their ideas for improving things is a big part of my work as well, so do contact with me your ideas and anything that you want to others to know about. To get in touch, please feel free to pop into one of my 3 surgeries, or email, ring or text and then I will call you back. In June I will be having surgeries on 8th June – 11 – 12.30 at Miners Welfare and then 1 – 2.30pm in the café at the Holemescarr Centre 28 June - 3.30 – 4.30 at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk As always I am limited by space to include everything I am doing, so please contact me if you want any updates on anything I haven’t included. Best wishes

A WEEKEND FOR BUDDING GARDENERS On Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June (2-5 pm), seven Bessacarr gardeners will be opening up their gates again to raise cash for two Doncaster charities. Among the gardens is one owned by a former Gold Medal Winner at the Chelsea Flower Show and another that featured recently in Amateur Gardening Magazine. For ÂŁ4 (no cost for FKLOGUHQ \RX FDQ DFFHVV VHYHQ WRWDOO\ GLÎ? By going along, you could help raise money for Doncaster Womens’ Aid (doncaster-womens-aid.co.uk), which aims to help bring an end to domestic violence against women and children, and Doncaster ReMap (remap.org.uk), which designs tailor made equipment to help disabled people become more independent and gain a better quality of life. Every year, the group chooses small, local FKDULWLHV WKH\ EHOLHYH ZLOO UHDOO\ EHQHČ´ W IURP WKH donations. This year, as well as the two chosen charities, anything over ÂŁ3,000 will be donated to Doncaster Foodbank (doncaster.foodbank. org.uk). “We try and make the open days a summer fair type of atmosphere,â€? says Ken Kilvington, who designed one of open gardens on Whin Hill Road. “We’re friends who were brought together by our love of gardening – and a good social event, really. So, it’s great to share this passion with others, whether people want to come for an hour or the whole afternoon.â€? As well as being able to visit the gardens, there will be hot drinks, afternoon teas, and the sale 22 ROSSINGTON TODAY

of plants, preserves and pickles, among other things. Over the last three years, the open days have raised £560, £1500 and £2460 for the Salvation Army, Samaritans, foodbank and homeless charities. Visitors can plan the visit in advance by purchasing tickets at Walker’s Nursery, Blaxton, or simply turn up on the day and buy a ticket at any of the participating gardens on Whin Hill Road. Every penny donated is given to the designated charities.

ROSSINGTON-VILLAGELIFE.CO.UK and OLD ROSSINGTON PHOTOS This month, Keith Scott received lots of photos from Bob Billanie, which included many of the Rossington Gala which were published on the Facebook page. Bob was one of those who came to work at Rossington Colliery in the 60s and 70s from the north east. He set up the &DPHUD &OXE PHHWLQJ DW (OPČ´ HOG +RXVH LQ those days. The house was on Grange Lane but it is gone and the land has been used for the supermarket. Keith showed some of his collection at that supermarket during April, and will be showing them at the Dementia Group which meets at Holmescarr on Thursday afternoons when his work shifts permit. Keep your photos and memories coming for both the Facebook page and the website. Contact Keith via his page if you would like him to give a talk and bring his albums to a venue where they may help the people who view them. New to the website since last month is a piece about the Veterans Breakfast Club who meet on Saturday mornings at Holmescarr allowing past and present services personnel to share their memories and camaraderie. The Cricket &OXE SOD\V DW WKH :HOIDUH DQG D Č´ UVW SLHFH DERXW them is also in the website, alongside historical items including one about the Brickworks that was based around the present brick pond, supplying much of the local masonry. Doctors and clergy added to the local people who played and sang in these performances, which were subsidised by the pit funds. If you have items or ideas that you would like to see on the website, contact Elaine Spencer on 07771 672561. 26 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Correction - Rossington Gardener’s Association The shop on the Bankwood Lane Allotments open Saturdays 10:00 to 12:00. New members always welcome, garden advice given freely! MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD AT ROSSINGTON MEMORIAL HALL AT 6.30 pm on TUESDAY 10 MAY 2016 PARISH COUNCIL – Barry Johnson - Chair: Thank you to all the Parish Councillors for your hard work, commitment, enthusiasm and professionalism and to Anne & Zoe for helping, advising and guiding us, I really do appreciate it! I now believe we are well on the way to achieving this. PROJECT COMMITTEE – Carol Beaumont The Projects Committee has had a very busy year with quite a heavy load at times. We began with a very successful Family Fun day in July 2015 followed by a very well attended Firework Display on 5 November 2015. Sadly there was not enough time to organise a Beer Festival but we did have time to book a Pantomime for the village children in January 2016 which was a great success. The Easter Eggstravaganza proved popular in spite of the cold day but Easter was early this year. As well as events the projects committee are also responsible for such issues as Rossington in Bloom and the Christmas Lights. We hope that these will be bigger and better for 2016. Allotments are also the responsibility of this committee and latterly we have been overseen the RecyCoal Fund. As you can imagine this requires a lot of input by the members and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved for their continued help and support. With the village growing and more projects being brought forward, for example tree planting this looks to be an interesting year. Any councillors willing to be part of his very intense but rewarding committee would be most welcome to join. GOVERNANCE AND STRATEGY COMMITTEE – Carol Beaumont We have only had a few meetings this year dealing with the resignation of the previous Clerk and the employment of a TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

The Standing Orders and Financial Regulations were updated and a system Internal Financial Control were put in place. The Strategy Committee met to set the budget and set out the plans for the year. A budget was allocated to each project or idea and adopted by the Committee and the Parish Council. It is proposed on the advice of YLCA to amalgamate most of the roles of these committees to make for a better system and also less meetings. PLANNING COMMITTEE – John Gibson In giving the report for this period I don’t intend to make reference to all submitted applications but to simply make reference to any that we have commented on and have raised issues with DMBC Planning department. Inland Port Development - There have been a number of full applications relative to this development following the outline applications dealt with previously, construction has commenced with the road infrastructure and WKH Č´ UVW WZR XQLWV SURJUHVVLQJ Site of the former Rossington Colliery - There have been no further applications beyond Plots 1 and 2, the construction commenced on plot 1 with Harron Homes during 2015 and went on hold pending the opening of the new link road. The construction has since resumed and continues to progress. The Rossington link through the site has been welcomed by the residents of the village with reduced journey times; on the down side we now have the massive increase in large ORUU\ WUDÉ? One of the major concerns raised by residents in Rossington over the last few months has EHHQ WKH YDVW LQFUHDVH LQ ORUU\ WUDÉ? F LQWR DQG through Rossington. They are very worried about the safety of children going to and from school on West End Lane. The lorries are FUHDWLQJ LQ HÎ? HFW VLQJOH ODQH WUDÉ? F GXH WR WKH considerable increase in numbers. The turning point for lorries going in and out of Bankwood Lane is totally inappropriate for many large vehicles. Plus as the lorries are going to recycling units on Bankwood Lane there is the added issue of smell, dust and dirt throughout the area. To try and address some of these issues the Parish Council held a meeting with local businesses on Bankwood Lane on Tuesday 26 April 2016. The general feeling at the meeting was the businesses want to work together with DOO SDUWQHUV WR Č´ QG VROXWLRQV WR WKHVH LVVXHV The Parish would like to set up a meeting with Harworth Estates and the key interested businesses on Bankwood Lane who said they are keen to extend the road from the spur on the new roundabout from the new link road. This would not only help those businesses, improve the environment for local residents but would most importantly make the new Harworth housing estate a much more attractive prospect for potential buyers. The next meeting will be at 6.15 pm on Tuesday 24 May 2016. Would you like to attend this meeting or would you like to hold a separate meeting with the Parish and the key businesses? Thank you.

Dear Friends, Commonwealth countries are celebrating the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on 11th June this year. As part of the celebrations, the Bible Society has published a book with the title, ‘the servant Queen and the King she served’. I wrote about ‘service’ a couple of months ago so I would have preferred to write about another issue. However, it seems appropriate that as we celebrate the Queen’s birthday, there is the need to consider what describes her as a ‘servant Queen’. 7KH ERRN LGHQWLČ´ HV PDQ\ LVVXHV LQFOXGLQJ WKH fact that she works hard. An extract from the book states: ‘The queen works hard because she is committed to service‌ The queen’s work is an expression of her desire to serve others. She is not a hired servant who is required to do lots of tasks; she is a queen who chooses to serve her people through doing the work that will best contribute to the nation’s health’. It is also stated in the book that the Queen protects her privacy but her faith is not private. She is open about what she believes in and speaks of Jesus Christ as an ‘inspiration’, a ‘role model’ and ‘an anchor’.

you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them (John 13: 12 – 16) Service comes with respect for one another. I wonder how many of us are prepared to bend the rules to let an odd person into our group. Some people have prejudice against at least one individual or group of people or a nationality. This means that those individuals or group of people or nationalities may not be welcome. Yes, some people may be able to argue their cases out regarding not being able to welcome people. But I wonder if we can be of service to people we are not ready to welcome into our midst. This month, as we celebrate the Queen’s birthday in all forms, I wonder if I can remind you that ‘power is made perfect in service’.

Have fun and God bless you. Yours sincerely,

Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-leStreet, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road, and Tickhill. Tel. 01302857952 E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk

Jesus is a role model to the monarch because he came to serve people. For example, Jesus on the night before he died, washed his disciples feet and John’s gospel describes what followed afterwards: :KHQ KH KDG Č´ QLVKHG ZDVKLQJ WKHLU IHHW KH put on his clothes and returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he asked them. ‘You call me “Teacherâ€? and “Lordâ€?, and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, 38 ROSSINGTON TODAY
