Welcome to
the March 2016 edition There is a reason why some people think they can do anything…
They listened to their mothers With Mother’s Day approaching I looked for a Mum themed quotation this month! Part of the job of being a Mum is to encourage our children to reach for the stars, to support them in all their endeavours whether that be their first steps, riding a bike, taking up a new hobby, or any of the other new experiences and milestones along the way to adulthood and beyond. It doesn’t get any easier I am discovering, as the concerns we have when they are little, develop into new worries as the reach the next stage in their development. My youngest becomes a teenager on Mother’s Day this year and we become a three teen household! Such fun! The last time her birthday fell on Mother’s Day was 11 years ago and on that day her 2nd birthday coincided with the distribution of the first issues of Tickhill Today – so we are also celebrating the 11th birthday of Today Publications this month.

As Mother’s Day approaches please give a thought for all Mums at whatever stage of motherhood they may be, and don’t forget those around you who no longer have their Mums to treat this Mother’s Day. Don’t forget that if you are planning activities on the Tour De Yorkshire Day on 30th April do let me know so that we can include a full list of local events in the next issues and ensure everyone knows where the action is taking place! The April issue will be delivered to you late March, over the Easter weekend. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th March. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

Cause for a Cuppa! Well, come on in. Has it been a month already since we last chatted? Hard to believe. Actually, the weather this winter is hard to believe indeed. I hope the cold/flu bug hasn’t bitten you too bad. Mother’s Day visits us this month. I want to wish each and every mother a very Happy Mother’s Day. Though my Lisa loves children, I don’t reckon any more little feet (other than grandchildren at some point ... hopefully) will be pitterpattering through our house. We got a dog Diesel as our most recent “baby”. As we contemplated getting a dog, everyone said “it’s just like having a child.” Outside I was, “Oh, right, that’s interesting”. Inside I was “Oh, come on, you got to be kidding. No way!”. Well as the little bundle of joy showed up in our car around the first of December, I had no idea how true those comments would play out. You ought to see it! Lisa picks him up and makes such a fuss. We recently had a friend round when it was time to feed Diesel. We have a routine down. Diesel senses what is happening as we get the dog food container from the cupboard. He sits so prim and proper, watching every move. Some of his
lunch goes into the bowl (not all as he literally inhales it). His bowl goes on the floor, his eyes firmly fixed on that silver container of goodness. But he sits there, waiting for those 3 special words. Waiting. Those words are not “I love you” but “Go get it!”. As the arm makes a motion to the bowl, Diesel breaks from his frozen glare to attack those innocent little biscuits in the bowl.
one hand and an iron in the other. With one foot she pulls the oven door open to check on the home made pies and with the other foot pushes the baby swing. For all the Mums out there in Cuppa land, that is a fairy tale. Yes, yes, I get the sentiment. From the partner’s/children’s perspective you are a Super-mum. But ... Really? When goes on inside when the card cuteness dies down?
Well, our little bundle of joy is going to school down on Bankwood with “Dad” & “Mum”. Boy, is there a lot to learn ... for all of us! Sit. Stand. Look. Go get it (eat). Wait. “Eric, getting a puppy is just like having a child.” OK, no more arguments from me.You know what? He is learning. He is making mistakes, as we are. There are times of rebellion and his time of declaring that “I am going to sniff what I want to sniff”. Well, such is a dog’s life. But now I get it. It’s the same (well, sort of) package deal.
My mum was not a Super-mum. Sorry, she was not a Super-MOM (she was an American). But she was patient and persistent. She was not much into words. But she spoke love with her life and example to us. I remember some right battles with my brother over his cheque book. This was in the day when you had to record everything and keep a paper ledger. He didn’t. And my sister, wow, some knock down, drag out ones over all sorts. But today they love and respect her for her patience and persistence. Rossington Mums, they grow up so fast. God gives each Mum one shot at being mum for your child. You are shaping them to be people (adults one day) who will have to deal with all that the world throws at them. I truly believe if you would be willing to give them the gifts of patience and persistence, their journey into adulthood will be greatly strengthened. If you are doing that, well done! If you could do some improving, start today. It is worth it!
As we were in class tonight and going through the eating “thing”, Steph was working with Scruff. She was demonstrating how to deal with a particularly challenging one. She said words like “patience” and “persistence”. She was consistent on pulling the dog bowl up when Scruff didn’t wait she she gave the OK. When I think of mum-hood, how important those words are! When this time of year comes round, I try and browse the card section of the various shops. You can almost bet there will be at least one card with the whole “Super-mum” idea. You know, the woman who smiles though having 4 or 5 children hanging on her with sweeping brush in
As always, the door is open and the kettle is on. It’s been nice visiting with you. :) Happy Mother’s Day!!

“ALL THINGS YORKSHIRE” Micro chipping law begins April 6th
Bawtry Art Club annual exhibition of paintings
Dog owners who have not micro chipped their pet face a fine of up to £500 when a new law comes into force this Spring. The aim is to reduce the 100,000 dogs lost or abandoned each year in England. Apart from untold suffering to the animals, it costs charities and taxpayers nearly £60 million in rescue and re-homing costs.
The members of Bawtry Art Club have on display and for sale some of their most recent work.
To help pet owners meet the April 6th deadline, the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre at Bawtry is offering whileyou-wait micro chipping with no appointment needed. The cost of the chip and registering online is only £12. Micro chipping vastly increases the chances of reuniting lost pets with their owners. Chipping is simple and safe and the RSPCA offer applies to dogs, cats and rabbits. When you visit the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre on the Great North Road, Bawtry, DN10 6DE, you can also take advantage of the charity’s new, bigger Pet Store where all proceeds go towards caring for rescued animals. It costs an average of £10 a day to care for each animal at the Centre and the charity receives no Government or lottery funding. Help us by texting SYAC14 £5 to 70070, donate online at www.rspcadrb.org. uk, or why not volunteer some of your time. You can follow the work of the Centre at www. facebook.com/rspcadrb T
The exhibition will be held in Bawtry Library and can be viewed in their normal opening hours from the 1st March until 31st March 2016 Come and vote for your favorite painting! Bawtry Art Club meet weekly on Tuesday mornings in the New Hall Bawtry 9.45am – 11.45am and would welcome new member, come and have a cup of coffee with us and find out more about your local art group. Update from Councillor
Rachael Blake If you are reading this after 1 March, part of the link road should be opened, with all of it open in the next few weeks. I would be interested to hear your views on what you think of it and the difference it is making to traffic in the village. Police station parking – Meeting with the Police and Crime Commissioner This has been an ongoing complaint from residents, due to the change in the way South Yorkshire Police are organised and Rossington being the starting place for officers and PCSOs. Last week your 3 ward councillors attended a meeting to discuss what could be done to resolve the problems. The Commissioner understood the problems that parking was having and he will be meeting with us again in the village to look at alternatives to the current situation. Crossings in the village I was contacted by a parent who was concerned about the increasing problems and danger of crossing roads in the village. DMBC’s Highways Engineer is going to meet me at the area of concern and I will keep you informed about what progress is being made. Bankwood Lane Councillors had a meeting with senior officers at DMBC about increasing problems with lorries using Bankwood Lane. We were assured that planning enforcement would be visiting the following week and that based on their findings action would be taken. I received the report last week and was very surprised at the findings from planning enforcement team who didn’t see the problems that I am seeing every time I am in the village e.g. the number of lorries coming into the village at all hours and the ongoing concerns that many residents have brought to my attention. I have asked for a meeting to be arranged urgently with the businesses and for councillors to be invited to this. My view is that the impact on residents’ lives who live around Bankwood is completely unacceptable and DMBC officers need to listen to residents’ concerns and start to take action asap – I will keep you updated. Backs on Radburn Road The work continues to repair and improve the backs on Radburn Road. Residents are telling me that they are happy with the improvements and are keen to see DMBC complete all the improvements over the next few years.
Quad Bikes on Brodsworth I am aware that problems continue and having had long discussions with DMBCs Area Team about this as well as South Yorkshire Police. DMBC’s Neighbourhood Response Team are now involved to try and identify the riders and there is going to be a Doncaster wide police operation to apprehend them who are causing so much damage to our parks and green spaces. Stopping access is something that is also being looked at – this isn’t always possible due to paths being bridleways, but if access can be prevented at as many places as possible then it might deter them from coming through Rossington on their way across the Borough. If you have any information about who is causing this problem please call the police on 101 or speak to Richard in the Area Team, who is based at Holmescarr Parade Arts Day – Miners Welfare – Sunday 13 March Last year saw the fabulous handmade parade in the village which was enjoyed by many residents. From 12 – 5pm, there will be a super fun day to celebrate the art forms that make great parades. Free activities for adults and children! Samba Drumming / Prop Making / Under 8’s Arts Sessions / Bunting Making / Dance demos and your chance to have your say on what should be in this year’s handmade parade. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough space to update you on everything that I have been involved in or include all of the great things that have been happening in the village, but please do contact me if you would like more information on anything I have written about, think there is something I should be working on and most important, please get in touch about lorries in the village and your views on this. How to Contact Me I have 2 surgeries in the village Last Tuesday of every month – 3.30 – 4.30pm at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street – 2nd Wednesday of every month – 11am – 12 at Miners Welfare (Please note new day) Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB: Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Best wishes

Tickhill and District Lions The History Lions Clubs began in 1917 as the dream of a Chicago businessman who believed that local business clubs should expand their horizons to include the betterment of their communities and the world at large. This belief became a driving principle and it was decided that no Lions Club should exist for the financial benefit of its members. Lions Clubs became ‘International’ with the first Canadian Club in 1920. During the Second World War members of Canadian Lions Clubs, visiting London as servicemen, were appalled by the way the children of the blitz had to live and decided they wanted to help. Queen Elizabeth was so impressed by their actions that after the war she sent Lord Leconfield to Canada to thank the Lions and shortly after his return the first Lions Clubs started to spread throughout the UK. There are now over 900 Clubs in the UK and Ireland, over 46,000 around the world in 208 countries and more than 1.3 million Lions, all dedicated to making a difference Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation in the world and also one of the most effective. Each one of its members pays their own dues which collectively cover all of our insurance and administration costs. This means that all of the money raised by our Club can be distributed in full without any deductions. Message in a bottle. garden view
By Rachel Leverton
Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning) The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th . Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past.
There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over.
Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade.
Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost.
If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems.
Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot.
Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore. Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! 26
Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony.
Rossington Today
Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am.

Remember my Chains Dear Friends, On Tuesday February 9th, 2016 the Prime Minister announced that six ‘reform prisons’ would be created in England and Wales “to tackle the high levels of violence and reoffending”. However, there was some response from charities regarding how effective these measures are if “prisoners were crammed into filthy institutions with no staff”. This issue reminds me of the Apostle Paul, who wrote a few letters to churches in Asia whilst in prison in Rome. One of the churches was in Colossae. In his conclusion to the letter to the Colossians, he stated, “I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you” (Colossians 4: 18). I wonder if Paul may have dictated to someone to write this letter on his behalf. If so, I wonder if the conditions in which he found himself made it impossible to write since he was literate. Being in chains might have limited his ability to write. Paul might therefore be reminding his readers to help him become free from those chains so that he could live a ‘normal’ life like anyone else. Many people may not be in prison cells but find themselves chained up physically, emotionally and spiritually to debts, addictions, relationships, etc. Most of them want to live ‘normal lives’ but can only do so if we make a move to help them. Secondly, Paul had earlier in the chapter asked his readers to pray for him to proclaim the gospel. It may be that Paul was not imprisoned as a criminal but because of the work he did as a preacher. This reminds us that every prisoner needs our prayer and help, be it a criminal or not. We do not have to judge them for who they are or are not. I also wonder if Paul may not have been warning his readers of the risk of being Christians. It was a risky business to be a preacher in those days 34
Rossington Today
so it could be that he was warning his readers to be ready to face the consequences of following Jesus. Talk of risks reminds me of Dan Walker who will replace Bill Turnbull on BBC breakfast show. This young man has his faith being tested because he has come out to declare what he can do and cannot do on a Sunday. He had to declare that his faith would not affect what he does as a journalist. Many of us face similar situations in our daily routines and are reminded that the world has not changed since biblical times. I wonder if I can remind you that we are in Lent, a time to prepare for Easter day. The website RE:QUEST, explains, “Christians spend the 40 days of Lent preparing for Easter Day. They set aside time to think about whether they are living in a way that makes God happy. They will ask for God’s forgiveness for the times they mess up, and for his help to live in the way that he wishes. Christians specially remember all that Jesus did for each of them when he died on the cross on the first Good Friday. They also remember how he overcame sin and death by rising from death on the first Easter Sunday”. One of the ways to live to make God happy is to consider those who are in prison cells as well as those chained emotionally or spiritually by their actions and relationships. I wonder if you may ask God to lead you to act in a way that will help such a person become free and lead a ‘normal life’. It may involve taking risks as the Apostle Paul and Dan Walker did but do not worry, God will lead you in all that you do by his Spirit. Grace be with you. Yours sincerely,

The website is building slowly, and we are adding more photos and stories as they are ready. We hope to have the 1838 Rossington Hall Sale project ready in March, having overcome some technical issues and testing it. It was delayed because of the issues. If you feel you have a story but are not good at writing, we can arrange to record you speaking about it, or can work from notes you make, and show you what is written before publishing. Have a look at the website to see what is already there at Rossington-villagelife.co.uk We are also seeking new members for our website and Facebook Committee to help with shaping it for the future, with your telling us what you would like to see captured so that it is there for the younger generation in years to come when they start to wonder what the village was like in their parents’ and grandparents’ early lives. The website captures past, present and future so there is plenty of scope for photos, diagrams and written work. The Committee meets fortnightly and is not formal at all. We meet at 6 pm on Monday nights unless it is a Bank Holiday when we may move to Tuesdays. Our first one in March is 7th. Come and join us. Keith Scott’s Facebook page, Old Rossington Photos, is also growing in membership with over 3300 members now – some from other parts of the world. They love the chance to see past and present photos of Rossington and its people. As the weather improves, Keith hopes to take his albums out and about again so that you can see them. Contact us at 07771 672561 or via the Old Rossington Facebook page for more information. We would love to hear from you. T 36
