This month we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the launch of Rossington Today! It was May 2006 when the first issue was delivered to homes in Rossington. Initially only about half of the village was included in the distribution but as more groups and organisations including the Parish Council became interested in using the magazine as a way of reaching residents then it quickly became clear that we needed to increase distribution to reach the whole village. We do now try to ensure that everyone receives a copy but if you know someone who isn’t receiving theirs please do ensure you let me know so we can try and put that right. A quick and easy way to do this is to text 1TODAY followed by the street name to 66777. I am very grateful to all of the people who have contributed content over the last 10 years – too many mention them all, but I will mention Eric Simpson who has been writing our Cause for a Cuppa page for most of the time the magazine has been in existence – thank you Eric. There have been numerous others who have regularly reported on their sports club, social clubs, groups, community centres, churches etc. Thank you to everyone - I hope that this continues for many years to come. As we are sat across from each other today enjoying our cuppa, I thought I would bring up a subject that been rumbling around in the back of my mind for a few months. I don’t know about you, but things that rumble around in MY mind bumps into all sorts. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake Update from Rachael Blake – Cou uncillor for 5RVVLQJWRQ %DZWU\ DQG $XVWHUČ´H HOG Another busy month with the much uch awaitawait ed Rossington road opening at the end of March which most residents who I have spoken to really welcoming it. I have provided below some very brief information about other work I have been doing – please do contact me or call into see me at one of my 3 surgeries in the village so that I can provide you with more information. Flooding on West End Lane – following my last update I have asked the drainage team to look at all the drains from the swimming pool to the end of the road – any more problems – please get in touch Rossington Cemetery I have been contacted by a number of residents, concerned not just about the state of the road but the way it is maintained inside. Following a meeting with residents in the cemetery, I arranged a meeting a couple of days later with senior managers in DMBC who are responsible for both the road and the cemetery itself. Some of that work has now been completed, with a lot more to be done to get the cemetery back to how it should be. It isn’t right that the cemetery and the road have been allowed to deteriorate to the state that they are in. I am aware of the petition and fully support this, but as well, as I am doing everything I can to get the improvements done asap. Dumped rubbish, dog fouling and litter Unfortunately dumped rubbish is a problem in quite a few areas of the village. Does anyone ever get caught? The Council’s enforcement team have been busy taking action against those who are responsible. Rossington is one of their hotspots where WKH\ DUH SXWWLQJ LQ D VLJQLČ´FDQW DPRXQW RI HÎ?RUW WR GHDO ZLWK LVVXHV 7KH QXPEHUV IRU 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Fixed Penalty Notices up to 15 March issued in Rossington were 29: 6 for dog fouling; 22 for littering; and 1 for vehicle litter. If you are aware of particular hotspots please let me know and I will pass them on. When is Recycoal going to complete the country park? Recycoal surrendered their interest in the site and is now the responsibility of Harworth Estates so I am waiting for their plans on this. The Inland Port training academy? The legal papers have now been signed for this, so the academy is progressing, and once the co-ordinator is in post the academy will be open. Bankwood Lane and lorries in the village This continues to be a massive problem for the village and one that has to be stopped. Ζ DP LQ FRQWDFW ZLWK VHQLRU RÉ?FHUV IURP DMBC every time I see something or residents contact me (I always remove residents details from the information), so almost every day. Now that one enforcement QRWLFH LV LQ HÎ?HFW IURP $SULO DFWLRQ FDQ EH taken against that particular business if they operate outside of their permitted hours. A lot of DMBC departments are now involved in this work, not just planning enforcement, and residents will have seen some of this evidence gathering taking place. Our Son Olly, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy just after his 2nd Birthday in 2014. As you can imagine our world was ripped apart and our hearts were broken. DMD is a cruel muscle wasting, life shortening, terminal condition for which at present, there is NO cure and is 100% fatal. Now we are determined to do everything we can to stop Olly being taken away from us. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic DQLPDOV $QG VOXJ EDLW LV D YHU\ LQHɝFLHQW way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%. The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of prepacked nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Many Rossington people will know of the Royle family who lived on Central Drive, with there being 9 children in total. Bryan’s Dad cycled from Bolton to get a job at the pit, and after collecting his belongings from home, he cycled back and lodged at 29 Haig Crescent and met his wife to EH 0DU\ *UHHQ ZKR OLYHG QH[W GRRU Keith has been publishing the photos in Bryan’s package, and the manuscript is being transcribed to the website. If anyone has any photos for Keith’s Facebook page, and doesn’t know how to upload them, contact Keith via the page and he will help. The membership of the page grows at a pace with new people of all ages joining. Dear Friends,

Most of us are aware that the ‘Tour de Yorkshire’ comes through Doncaster at the end of April. In fact, by the time you are reading this piece, it may be on or have occurred already. Interestingly, I found out a few months ago that the road behind my house is part of the route. As April was getting closer, I could see many old bicycles (painted yellow and blue) placed all around the village. Another bright idea was the wooden bicycles that have popped over in my community. The enthusiasm has motivated me to be a bicycle rider. However, one of my weaknesses in life is that I never learnt to ride a bike. Some of you may be having a laugh but I know that I am not alone. In my case, I never owned a bike till I bought one for my son a few years ago. However, the main reason I did not learn to ride a bike in my teenage years was that I was afraid of losing my balance and heading for the wall or the hedge. Talk of balancing on a bike and I am reminded of the IDFW WKDW PDQ\ SHRSOH Č´ QG LW GLÉ? FXOW WR OLYH EDODQFHG lives. Some even feel that life is out of control. To speak of balance means to be poised, stable, and steady. Being balanced can also mean being pleasant, calm, peaceable, composed, and self-controlled. Learning to be self-controlled is a process The apostle Peter in his letter to Christians in the GLDVSRUD LQ WKH Č´ UVW FHQWXU\ HQFRXUDJHG WKHP DGG self-control to their faith. He says, “Do your best to improve your faith. You can do this by adding goodness, understanding, self-control, patience, devotion to God, concern for others, and love. If you keep growing in this way, it will show that what you know about our Lord Jesus Christ has made your lives useful and meaningfulâ€? (2 Peter 1: 5 – 8). Friend, I wonder if you have considered balancing your faith in God by adding self-control to the list of virtues you have already. May I suggest to you that you consider a few issues that can help in this balancing act. These may include planning well in life, putting *RG Č´ UVW LQ \RXU OLIH WDNLQJ WLPH IRU \RXU IDPLO\ DQG looking after yourself. 40 ROSSINGTON TODAY

A planned life includes being well-ordered and able to deal with emergencies in life. Interestingly, a planned life can help deal with stress. Secondly, a constant relationship with God is essential for a person to be balanced. Jesus mentioned to his followers that the Č´ UVW FRPPDQGPHQW LQ OLIH LV WR ČŠORYH WKH /RUG \RXU God with all your heart, soul, and mind.â€? One of the ways of loving God is to have a frequent time of prayer. Relating with God in prayer can help a person stay calm and acquire strength for the tasks that lie ahead in life. To maintain a good emotional balance, one must put God and his word on one’s daily routines. $V D IDPLO\ SHUVRQ VRPHWLPHV Ζ Č´ QG LW GLÉ? FXOW WR ZRUN out a line between my life as a Minister and a husband, a father, a brother, and a son. However, I am reminded that though a family is a responsibility it is a privilege that God has placed in my hands. Another point is that in my life, sometimes I fail to look after myself. Jesus reminded his followers that the second most important commandment is to “Love others as much as you love yourself.â€? Loving yourself can include taking a rest and doing something HQMR\DEOH ΖW FRXOG DOVR PHDQ WDNLQJ VRPH WLPH RÎ? and having fun with others. This fun time enables one to have a calm spirit in one’s dealings with others. Moreover, I wonder how many people are prepared to say ‘no’ to another request for help when their lives are full already. In summary, I wonder if I can suggest to you that as you enjoy this spring season, kindly consider having a balanced life in order to stay out of stress. You may choose to plan ahead in your life, seek God and relate with him through prayer, and look after your family and yourself too. However, if you have a balanced life already then keep it up.
