Welcome to

the September 2015 edition

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” Nelson Mandela The September issue already and by the time you read this, children throughout the UK will be heading back to school. Many wearing new uniforms that are a little on the large side, with shiny shoes and sharpened pencils! Good luck to all the children starting school for the first time or moving on to the next stage of their education this autumn. September sees lots of events happening locally, including; the annual Grand Prix cycling event around Tickhill which promises to be bigger and better than ever before with a huge amount going on for spectators; T-Fest, also in Tickhill, a fantastic event in 2013 that promises to be just as good this time; and for all you foodies the Festival of Food and Drink at Clumber Park. We are hoping to have a ticket giveaway via our facebook page for this event so please ‘like’ our page www.facebook.com/ todaymags so that you see details of this and other offers and giveaways we have. The October issue will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th September.

Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Packed Lunches & Uniforms Well, here we go again! I blinked my eyes and the summer is gone. We are now back to packed lunches ... uniforms ... walking the children to school and watching them take that next step in their lives. Our little visit was never intended to be “preachy”. I hope it hasn’t been and never will be. I do share stuff from my heart and certainly understand we all have different experiences, life stories and opinions of all sorts. It has been amazing to sit down with people over the years and talk about subjects ranging from an American’s view on milk in tea ... to education ... to witchcraft. It’s only as we sit and chat that we can learn from another viewpoint. I JUST returned from a week at a Christian camp for young people. Talk about an experience!! It was situated in a conference centre

in mid-Wales with hills / sheep on either side with approaching s-bend turns that make our own Rosso s-bends look like a drag racing track. There were approximately 100 teens/preteens who love God and weren’t ashamed of it. The vast bulk of these young people did not grow up in church but were given an opportunity to investigate the “God thing” with no pressure to give the thumbs up. They were at all different places in their journey to understand. The cool thing was that they were on a journey.

man, probably no more than 15 performed a rap written by himself. In it, he spoke of a broken relationship with his father, how he left him and his mother at an early age and his hate for him. It was as real and authentic as you get. His bravery for opening up his life for the entire camp was something I could NOT have done at that age though I related with virtually everything he said. His leader is going to help him work through this. See, the God thing is not about Sunday morning ... it’s so much more ... it’s about life.

They were not perfect young people and have had obvious issues of all sorts. As I share this incredibly intimate view, no names will be given as I don’t know many of them anyway. Please keep what you see to yourself.

I understand opinions go across the board on this subject. But this new school year, would you consider journeying with your children to consider exploring what this “God-thing” is about. We have Messy Church. St. Michael’s has “Rolling Stones”. A faith based Over on the right was an 18 year youth club will be springing up old who had obviously self-harmed soon. These are all user-friendly during her young life. Children in ways to see what God is all about. care literally littered the room. I You might be surprised at what had the honour to get to know at you see. : least 4 of them. On the left was a man who had dwarf-ism. Everyone Hope you all have a great start loved and accepted him just as he to the new school year and ... was. Amazing. have fun! As always, the door is open and the kettle is on. On Wednesday night, they had “Britain’s Got Talent”. A young

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake It has been another busy month, dealing with residents’ individual problems, problems that affect the whole village, as well as attending fantastic community events and finding out about new developments that will make a difference to the village. people as possible give their views so we can influence the Contacting DMBC Doncaster Council have recently improved their website and there are now many more services that you can access from the website and on the MyDoncaster app including managing your council tax, paying on line, planning and school admissions. Accessing these services saves you time and you can get things done at a time that’s convenient for you, not just between 8.30 and 5. In the village you can use the free Wi-Fi available at the community library to access the service, but if you need help with getting on-line, or any other aspect of using computers, Rob at Miners Welfare offers a free service which everyone is welcome to use. He is available Mondays 9-12; Tuesdays 10-4 and Thursdays 1-4. This is a fantastic free service that many people aren’t aware of – just call in at the times above and Rob will be happy to assist.

Litter and Fly tipping I have received a number of phone calls this month concerning the amount of litter that is in the village, as well as problems with residents dumping their household waste where they shouldn’t be which is making other residents’ lives a misery. As a Councillor I have a role to ensure DMBC services are playing their part and keeping the village as tidy as it can be so I was pleased that the Head of Street Scene at DMBC was happy to come out and see some of the problem areas that had been brought to my attention and he went away with a long list of areas where action needed to be taken. Some residents have suggested that we have an organised litter pick on a regular basis and that one did used to happen – the young people at the Youth Club are organising their own this month. If this is something that you would like to be involved in, please do let me know.

Have your say on the Local Plan Everyone has an opportunity to give their views on Doncaster’s Local Plan which will set out policies and proposals that will be used to guide decisions and investment across the Borough over the next 15 years. It will set out, how and where the homes, jobs, community facilities, shops and infrastructure will be delivered and the type of places and environment we want to create. The consultation started on 13 July and will finish on 4 September. There is a questionnaire that needs to be completed on-line via the website www.doncaster.gov. uk/localplan If you don’t have access to the internet this is something that Rob at the Welfare would be able to assist with, or do contact me if you would like more information or to give your views. It really is important that as many

way we want to see the village developing.

Community Events and local facilities It has been another month of fantastic community events in the village with the 2 fun days in July, one organised by the Parish Council and one by the Welfare. The Parish Council one had the good weather and was well attended and excellent activities and bands. The second one organised by the Welfare didn’t get good weather but that didn’t stop the community groups from taking part and showcasing the work that they are doing in the village and there is so much happening. I was pleased to be able to chat with many of the groups and find out more about what they did and offered and link some into DMBC to get funding for new equipment. Another great community asset is Rossington Market which has now had the stalls refurbished and new stall holders are attending – the day I went the fruit and veg stall was there – something that residents have said has been missing, along with other good stalls. I know from talking to residents that the market has got smaller over the years and doesn’t stay all day and some have said that they didn’t think it was there at all anymore, but it is still a good market with good stalls so well worth visiting as I plan to do most weeks.

How to Contact Me I have 2 surgeries where you can come and see me, tell me your concerns about Doncaster council services, tell me what needs improving or I can assist with individual problems that you have with DMBC services. Most of my surgery work takes place following a phone call or email, received throughout the month, so please feel free to contact me at any time. Last Tuesday of every month – 3.15 – 4.45pm at the Children’s Centre, Grantham Street (Please note I will not be holding this surgery in September but will be available the rest of the year). 2nd Friday of every month – 4.45 – 5.30 at Miners Welfare and then from 6 – 6.30pm at Rossington Youth Club Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Twitter @CllrRachaelB : Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading this and all the best for September. Best wishes

STRESS FRACTURES Stress fractures have been causing quite a lot of stress lately for some of our patients! A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone and may be referred to as a hair line fracture. A stress fracture is caused by overuse resulting in repetitive stress that builds overtime. Because of this, stress fractures are more common in runners and athletes but can also affect people who have previously been sedentary and suddenly begin exercising.

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

Unsurprisingly, the bones most commonly affected are those that bear weight such as the shin bone (tibia) and bones of the foot (navicular and metatarsals). Stress fractures affect women more than men, are more prevalent in winter due to a reduction in vitamin D absorption and having osteoporosis increases your vulnerability.

natalie’s

mobile beauty therapist bringing beauty to your home

Symptoms include pain made worse by weight bearing and eased with rest, swelling and an area of tenderness over the bony area.

waxing|lash lift (lvl) |gellish nails acrylics|spray tanning|pedicures

An x-ray is the most obvious test to confirm the presence of a stress fracture though if the x-ray is taken very soon after the injury has occurred it may be too slight to be observed. Once the healing process is underway (say 2-3 weeks later), the x-ray can detect the laying down of new bone.

Treatment is, somewhat frustratingly, rest. This is the only option and the rest period will need to last for between 6-8 weeks. After this, pain free activity levels need to be resumed gradually – perhaps increasing by 10% each week.

garden view

By Rachel Leverton

Autumn Equinox September 23rd is a special date in the gardening calendar. The sun is directly above the earth’s equator and day and night are exactly the same length. Because of this, September is a pivotal month in the year: it heralds the end of summer and the start of autumn. It’s also a pivotal month in the garden. It’s a time of endings but also a time for rejuvenation. Summer plants fade and enter their dormant period, while leaves take on autumn hues: yet autumn crocuses push up through the soil, while bushes and trees are laden with fruit. This dual aspect to September means that on the one hand I find myself preparing my garden for its long winter sleep, but on the other I’m planning ahead for next spring. So, while cutting down the perennials which have finished flowering I’m also checking to see if any have become too big for the space they’re in. If they have, I’ll divide them now, while the soil is still warm, and move them to another part of the garden, where they’ll flourish when the new growing season begins next year. Likewise, I’m planning where any new trees or shrubs will go. I’ll get them in during September and they’ll be off to a flying start come Spring. My garden is chock-full of Spring bulbs already but I can always find room for some more. While I’m at it I’ll be

planting a few in pots so I can be sure of a great spring display on the patio. Meanwhile I look upon all the weeding, tidying and leafraking that I’m doing as an investment in compostable materials for my bin and my leaf-litter pile, which when left over the winter transmogrify into rich, crumbly compost and leaf-mould respectively. When dug into my soil in early spring it will give my garden a much needed shot of energy with which to kick off the growing season. The autumn equinox is the gardener’s equivalent of the New Year. It’s a time to reflect on the past season while resolving to do even better in 2016.

Autumn Lawn Care Sweep the leaves. I put mine in a perforated dustbin liner, in a dry spot and wait for them to rot down. Rake Use a wire rake to pull out all the dead moss and thatch. I put everything I collect into the compost bin. Spike lawn Push a garden fork right through the lawn into the earth below then rock it a little to open up the lawn’s surface and allow air in. Brush with top dressing This is available from garden centres. Brush it into the holes with a stiff broom. To make your own top dressing, mix 3 parts top soil with one part peat substitute and 6 parts sharp sand.

Rossington Parish Council Mega Fun Day – There was a good turn out during the day mostly families with children enjoying face-painting, rock/wall climbing, Bungee jump, laser quest, slides, archery, fairground rides and many interesting stalls and exhibitions. In the evening we all enjoyed 3 very good bands and the hospitality of the Beer Tent! I would like to thank all the Parish Councillors, the Parish Clerk and all the volunteers who contributed to make this a very enjoyable experience. The Parish Council is not standing still, lessons have been learnt to make this an even better Community Event next year with more collaboration and cooperation with other groups in Rossington. With this in mind the decision, not taken lightly, was to cancel this year’s Beer Festival with the suggestion to incorporate into next year’s Fun Day or Days. As always your comments, suggestions and feedback on this and any other of the Parish Council’s decisions is welcome. Following the retirement of Lynn, the Memorial Hall Caretaker, and Barry Chadwick Parish Clerk, we wish them both all the very best and thank them for all the hard work and dedication. A new Caretaker and a new Cleaner for the Memorial Hall have been selected from a number of very good candidates, thank you to all that applied. The successful candidates have

been appointed, and started Monday 20th July, they are Gaynor as Caretaker assisted by Gemma, and we wish them well. The Parish Council would be grateful if you can help in developing Rossington’s Neighbourhood Plan; by completing the following survey you will help shape the future of our Village. Please return completed surveys to: Anne Hammond Deputy Clerk to Rossington Parish Council McConnell Crescent Rossington Doncaster DN11 0PL

Barry Johnson Chair Rossington Parish Council

In developing Rossington’s Neighbourhood Plan, Rossington Parish Council has held a number of consultations across the village. From these the following vision statement was proposed:

‘We want Rossington to be a prosperous and successful place to live, work and play’ Do you think this sums up what your vision of Rossington is? Yes No If you answered NO please have a go at your own Vision Statement: ………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………

Join the rainbow eruption of joy and dance coming to Doncaster in September Doncaster town centre is set to be awash with colour as the town’s theatre team up with international street theatre makers Artonik for The Colour of Time – a free outdoor performance that brings a rainbow eruption of powder and dance to the streets of Doncaster on Saturday 19 September. France’s Artonik have performed all over the world and their latest production The Colour Of Time has clocked up thousands of miles before making its way to Doncaster. And there’s a chance for you to be involved. Cast is inviting anyone aged over 9 with an interest in theatre, dance or performance to join the professional performers in this massive processional dance from the centre of town to Sir Nigel Gresley Square. Participants are invited to learn a dance routine

Tickhill and District Lions Club Following the sad death of Tickhill mayor Councillor Ray Hill we have made donations to both of the charities nominated at his funeral, Tickhill in Bloom and Methodist Church and Charities. We have also donated £250 to the Rossington Children’s Centre to cover the cost of a coach trip to Cleethorpes on 19th August. On the barbecue front we assisted Tickhill Cricket Club on 12th July for the 6 a side tournament in the morning and then for the match between Tickhill and the South Yorkshire League Select X1 in the afternoon. This was to mark the grand opening of the new pavilion by Geoff York, the oldest surviving member of the club at 95. An enjoyable day in 42

to help bring the show alive. There are videos to help people learn the choreography, and it doesn’t require any previous experience. The Colour Of Time is a stunning reinvention of the Indian Holi Festival where, each year, people throw gulal powder in the air showing great joy, celebrating unity, and acceptance of diversity through colourful embraces. In a huge dance parade, dancers and musicians will move in a choreographed parade through Doncaster town centre towards a finale on the Sir Nigel Gresley Square outside Cast. Graham Whitehead, Head of marketing and communications at Cast comments: “This is a great way for people from our local communities of any ability, who love to dance or express themselves in performance, to be part of a joyful and dynamic celebration. We’re delighted to bring outdoor theatre specialists Artonik and the spectacle that has been the highlight of festivals around the world since 2013 to paint Doncaster’s skies”. If dance isn’t your thing. There are also opportunities for community volunteers aged over 16 to work with Cast’s professional team of ushers to make this event something that Doncaster will never forget. Anyone interested in taking part as a performer or volunteer can contact Cast on 01302 303 959 or visit castindoncaster.com. T

front of a good crowd who can now make use of some excellent facilities. The barbecue team will be in action again on 26th September for the TFest day of music when there will be stages at the Scarbrough Arms and the Cricket Club. Note for your diaries. Another function at the Cricket Club - on Saturday 7th November there will be a big bonfire, super firework show, an excellent barbecue and the usual range of quality drinks. Details of timings for the bonfire and the fireworks will be advertised closer to the date.

Methodist Minister It’s free. Take it! Dear Friends, I wonder if I can continue to discuss issues regarding the season of harvest. September is called ‘Fankwa’ in my local dialect. It may be translated as ‘take it free’. In Ghana, September is part of the harvest season just as in the U.K. Hence, a bumper crop and fishing season calls for people giving lots of free food to friends, relations and the under– privileged. In days gone by, it was one of the ways of making sure that each member of the society was well catered for. On the other hand, freebies are rare in many cultures now. Most of us even question people’s motives when they hand out gifts to us let alone freebies. In one of the communities I serve as a Minister in Doncaster, I remember someone telling me off when I tried to help the person. The person’s response was, “I’m not a charity case so don’t let me feel like one”. Yes, you are not a charity case and we don’t want you to feel like one. However, Christians are encouraged to help each other in order to make people feel safe and secure. As part of the harvest celebrations going on in our many church situations, I wonder if I can take this opportunity to commend groups and individuals in our communities, especially our churches, that are helping people to feel safe, secure and at peace with each other as they provide basic needs and advice. As an institution that is present in the community in which it finds itself, the church can be defined in many ways. One definition is that it is caring. John Stott, in his book ‘The living church. Convictions of a lifelong pastor’, describes the traits of the church as people loving one another, forbearing one another, forgiving one another, and bearing one another’s burdens. He continues by saying that the church offers

‘friendship to the lonely, support to the weak, and acceptance to those who are despised and rejected by society’. In so doing, it is expressing the love of God. I wonder if I can suggest to you to remember to extend a hand of friendship as part of your harvest celebration. On the other hand if you get the opportunity to receive a gift, don’t feel that you’re a ‘charity case’ but rather, it is God’s love being extended to you. Have a blessed month. Yours sincerely,

THEN AND NOW. Family Heritage Day, Sunday, 15 November 2015

Keith Scott with some of his collection

INVITATION

record, or work from written notes, we will help with writing the items for those who feel they would like help. We are also hoping for people to bring in their keepsakes for scanning to place on the website. Keith is also looking for groups to book him for talks with his photos. He has already met in the Royal Care Home.

To publicise the website that is associated with Old Rossington Photos, the Facebook page, we are hosting a day at the Welfare. We would like Rossington Community groups to join us on the day. The theme is ‘Then and Now’ and it is the chance for groups, including the schools, to show how the village was and what is on offer now for the Community. Doncaster Archives is supporting us and will be there and we already have some groups committed to joining us, at no charge.

Any group wishing to know more about joining us should contact Elaine Spencer on 07771 672561. They will be able to publicise and also fund raise if they wish at the event.

Many of you will have met Keith Scott and seen his collection of over 3000 photos, as well as seen some of them on the Facebook page. He will be there alongside Rossington Village Life, the website, which will hold an archive of photos and is collecting stories about Rossington and its people’s recollections. We are looking for more people to contribute to the website, leaving a lasting memory for the future. As we can

In order to get a poster ready for the event, please contact before 15 October. The Facebook page is: Old Rossington Photos, and the website address is: Rossington-villagelife.co.uk. Go and have a look at both if you haven’t already visited!
