This will allow us to include all the most up to date information for the events of the day within our pages. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th April (yes the closing date has to be early too – although actually still the 2nd Friday of the month as it usually is).

Enjoy April and I will be back in a months’ time with your May magazine.

You will be receiving this magazine sometime over the Easter period, and this year Easter Sunday coincides with the start of British Summer time. This brings with it the lighter evenings and the promise of warmer days. It does also mean that Easter Sunday is an hour shorter than it should be, but for me that is a small price to pay for the added daylight at the end of each day.

YOGA Here at Move and Inspire Me, we believe that Yoga is one of the most beneficial practices you can do, both for mind and body. Just a few of the benefits include weight maintenance, de-stressing, lower blood pressure, more flexibility, stronger joints and muscles. We have 2 Yoga classes weekly, and a no-hassle payment system that lets you join in with any class that fits into your schedule that week Don’t just take our word for it, here is what some of our customers have to say about our classes; “I have been attending Yoga now for 18 months and love it. I have a few health issues so was worried whether I would be able to do it. Deborah is extremely supportive, will tailor moves to help individuals. There is no pressure to keep up and I find it a very inspirational class. Everyone is so supportive of each other and I have to say that after I finish the class I feel so invigorated, relaxed and at peace and as though I am truly getting to know my body. I would recommend the class to anyone. It is truly brilliant.” Becki
“A lovely way to start or finish the week! Deborah works hard to ensure all her clients are catered for at Move and Inspire Me Yoga. Any injuries or problems are accounted for and you leave feeling relaxed and invigorated. My frozen shoulder has greatly improved since I rejoined yoga, postures were adapted and specific stretches ensured a safe and comfortable return to mobility. I love my weekly yoga and would encourage everyone to give it a go! You’ll feel fitter, more flexible and make new friends, what’s not to like?!” Cate
ZUMBA We are also pleased to announce that due to popular demand, we are moving one of our 3 Zumba classes to Bawtry New Hall on Tuesday
evenings, 7pm - 8pm allowing us to increase our numbers. Enquire now to reserve your place.

Tickhill and Bawtry Probus Club April again, green shoots are beginning to appear in the garden but the trouble is that many of them are weeds - more work! But all work and no play is not a good recipe for healthy living so why not give Probus a try? Probus is a friendship club for retired professional and businessmen (we interpret those terms quite widely) and we meet at 10.00am at the Millstone Hotel on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. At each meeting we have a speaker after which many of our members can be found in the bar and some stay for lunch. Beats weeding any day! If you agree come along to any of our meetings as a guest and see if you can resist the temptation to become a member - most can’t. Our programme for the next three months is as follows: 8

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – IMPLEMENTATION Our Neighbourhood Plan was dated to cover the same period as Doncaster’s Local Plan, as the rules required. The Borough, however, withdrew its plan and has started again. As our NP has to be ‘in conformity with’ Doncaster’s Local Plan, we may have to modify ours in due course – just when we thought we were in control!
had conducted speed checks in Northgate and the speed limit was not being broken. This may be true but traffic is still intimidating for those trying to cross the road outside Spar. We’ve been given no encouragement so far to our requests for more pedestrian refuges but will pursue the matter; one potential location is near Mangham Lane.
1 Parking. Further discussions have led to a series of possible proposals. Our surveys suggest that about 60 spaces are occupied all day by people who work in the town centre; negotiations are under way to see if such as pub car parks can accommodate business users during the day. We are also looking at free disc parking, as operated in other market towns, in the effort to increase turnover of spaces for shoppers. Any proposal will obviously be subject to public consultation.
As I wrote last time, don’t expect miracles when public money is so tight but please let any member of the Council know your ideas for the enhancement of our town.
2 Tourism. Even without the castle, Tickhill has a lot to offer the visitor. We are aiming to have a printed leaflet, based on the excellent town trail published by the library service about 30 years ago. The Local History Society is assisting with this and with an information board for the Market Place. 3 The Wildwood. The Town Council has a lease on the naturalised wood alongside the track south from Sunderland Street parallel to the A1(M). With the active assistance of the Countryside Group, planting of native trees and shrubs will enhance the biodiversity of the wood and a circular path will be created in the Summer. 4 Grass verges. DMBC has undertaken to protect short sections of Sunderland Street and Alderson Drive with bollards. If this meets with public approval and is a success, the Council will look at extending this protection. 5 Road Safety. DMBC has told us that the police 10

Design Notes
Let there be Light! Spring is round the corner – how welcome and wonderful! The daffodils are smiling, our afternoons are lengthening – let there be LIGHT! Light in our homes is an interesting but difficult topic. It is the most tricky thing to achieve good lighting throughout your home and in many respects it is a rather neglected subject because I think it can be a little daunting. I am not talking about the necessary standard lighting, more about ‘mood’ lighting, the type that adds an extra layer of interest within a room. Different heights of lamps can provide pleasing effects, for example if you place an uplighter close to the floor the mood immediately changes. ‘Pebble’ lights laid on the floor add interest, as do the charming paper pleated lights which come in many sizes and shapes and are inexpensive. The new LED lights are not always aesthetically pleasing and sometimes cast a cool look, but their efficiency and low level running costs are something to consider. So don’t dismiss them too quickly even though they may be more functional than ‘designer’. In modern interiors they are at ease in their surroundings, but in a more traditional setting the light can be harsh. 12
Tickhill Today
However they do suit kitchens and bathrooms very well. Have you tried any of the new styled CURRENT lampshades? ...great patterns, new shapes and bold colours can make an exciting statement and update your look very easily. Make sure when you are doing any sort of revamp you consider the lighting alongside all other things and try some new ideas. It will make all the difference and provide both interest and impact. As daylight closes in and darkness follows….

Tickhill Cricket Club Hello to all budding young cricketers. We will be starting outside net practice from Friday April the 1st, weather permitting. We have age groups from 7/8 year olds all the way up to 15 year olds, so existing players or new players please come along and join in. Boys and girls all welcome. Any adults wanting to lend a hand will be more than welcome just contact myself Paul Foster 07900 951347. Even if you are not cricket fans or don’t have children wanting to play, still come down on a Friday night. It’s the place to be to meet friends for a drink in Pete’s bar which was built last year. Children who don’t want to join in with the Cricket will find plenty of space to play in the areas of the ground where cricket practice is not taking place. We look forward to seeing you there.
Scorers required We are also on our annual search for scorers for the senior teams on a Saturday and Sunday, the pay is £20.00 and a free tea is also included. A limited knowledge of cricket is required and these posts can be filled by 13 year olds to 83 year olds. Team captains will be responsible for the welfare of the scorer and travel to away games and the return to the club. Again please contact myself Paul Foster on 07900 951347.
Everyone is looking forward to a successful and hopefully dry and sunny season! T 18

Tickhill Dr to Dance for Charity Most of you know Sister Claire McKinley & Dr Hareen De Silva from The Tickhill & Colliery Medical Practice but what you don’t know is that they are associated with the Safe@Last Charity. Claire McKinney has been working with the charity for a number of years giving up her spare time to help them on many projects. She recently asked Dr De Silva if he would take part in their annual charity ballroom dancing competition. He is currently in his 10th week of rehearsals with his partner (another amateur) as the competition date is looming on Saturday 16th April 2016 at Sheffield City Hall. Tickets for the event have sold out with 400 guests attending. Dr De Silva has a fundraising page if you would like to donate to the charity: https://www.justgiving.com/ KimandHareen
Not So Strictly Come Dancing... is one of the highlights of the SAFE@LAST fundraising event calendar and one of the charity’s most popular events. Individuals are paired up into twelve couples and trained by Judith Bennett from City Limits Dancentre to learn two dances – one ballroom and one Latin dance. The couples train for at least ten weeks and then perform these dances in front of their family and friends at a glittering gala evening which will take place at Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 16 April 2016. The event is a competition and on the gala night each couple will receive scores from the judges which are then converted to points. These are combined with points based on couples fundraising to crown the winner of the coveted glitterball trophy.

Hello from all at Mayflower Sanctuary We are very giddy at the moment as we have 7 puppies arrived, they are just 5 weeks old. We all love puppies, even though they are hard work, they give us such a feel good factor. Their mummy is also with us. The puppies will not be ready for adoption until they are 8 weeks old. However please consider your lifestyle before thinking of adopting a puppy or any young dog.
Finding a forever home
We have around 5 of our residents that have been with us a while and are desperate for that loving home, fireplace or knee. Sometimes some of our dogs are overlooked because maybe they are too noisy in kennels and it puts people off even considering them as pets. Please remember dogs do behave very differently in kennels and that noisy barking dog that you overlook here is probably going to behave very differently in your home.
see a huge difference when they come back to us. We are hoping they will be ready for the next stage and that is to be re homed with loving families.
If someone is interested in one of our residents we also have a paddock where you are able to take your chosen dog to have a play and see how you gel together. If you already have a dog and want to know if your dog and your chosen dog will be compatible we ask that you bring your dog to the Sanctuary in order that they can both meet. We have many dogs of all shapes and sizes, also lots of lovely cats. No kittens just yet it’s a little early for kittens. Our Sanctuary is beautiful, full of life and hope and all our residents waiting for special people to give them a second chance. So if you are considering adopting a cat or dog please come along and see us, we will look forward to your visit. Update on Tim that had a heart operation, he is doing really well, busy playing and being a little star with his new owners. Lucky little boy. Boot camp is going well for our 6 residents that went back to school and re training. Apparently we will
The Ship Inn at Newington held a Race Night with all proceeds going to our Charity. What a fantastic evening this was. So thank you Jim you made it a wonderful evening. Also many thanks to everyone that sponsored races. Bawtry Bon Bons, Teasdale and Feast plus many others. Lots of businesses also gave raffle prizes, Face Facts in Bawtry, Nail and Beauty, The Deli, Jamps, Michael Gray Bespoke Hairdressers all in Tickhill. Not forgetting The Pilgrim Fathers in Scrooby that gave us a voucher for Sunday Carvery. Plus everyone else I haven’t mentioned as the page isn’t big enough. A big thank you to all. The fabulous total raised for the evening was £854 amazing. Please come along to see us and if you require any information on adopting a dog or cat from us please call 01302 711330. Bye for now,

Lucy is NOT a lap-cat. If you look carefully you will notice that she is a polydactyl cat which means she has extra toes. Exercise for the mind… and I don’t mean sudoku! I am very fortunate to be in a profession where I get to meet so many different people and I am frequently inspired by my patients one way or another. Having previously overcome huge obstacles on the path to fitness, it was vital for a recent patient to maintain her ability to exercise as it was one of the ways she controls her mental health disorder. This served as a reminder of the wider benefits of exercise…
One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.
Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain
Regular exercise can have a profound effect on diagnosed mental health disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder and anxiety. Research shows that exercise can treat mild to moderate depression as effectively as anti depressants! Exercise doesn’t have to mean running or going to the gym and it doesn’t have to mean busting a gut. Exercise can be anything you enjoy that’s physical and needs only be moderate (think slightly breathless and warm rather than gasping and sweaty!) We think exercise works for mental wellness by having an effect on certain chemicals in the brain, stimulating new brain cells to grow and develop and reducing the harmful changes in the brain caused by stress as well as providing a distraction from unhelpful thought processes. This means if you keep active you are less likely to be depressed or anxious, probably less likely to have trouble with memory and dementia and are more likely to feel good about yourself, be able to concentrate, sleep better, cope and stay independent. If you take medication for a mental health disorder, changes should only ever be made under the supervision of your psychiatrist or GP.

The curse of care fees! Many couples make standard ‘Mirror Wills’ which leave everything to the surviving spouse and then on the death of the surviving spouse everything passes to the children of the marriage. These Wills are perfectly acceptable and perfectly valid however have you considered the impact of care fees if the surviving spouse was to end up in care? Under the terms of a Mirror Will the surviving spouse inherits all of the assets of the marriage, the bank accounts, the car and generally the biggest asset you own – your home. If the surviving spouse then needs care and is financially assessed by the Local Authority, the assets (including the property) are then used to pay for their care until they have depleted the value of their assets down to only £14,250.
But what if you had prepared Property Trust Wills? The deceased spouse’s share in the property passes into a trust for the benefit of the children. The share of the property in this trust is not included as an asset for the purposes of a financial assessment – you have just protected half of the value of your home! Here at The Byrne Practice we can prepare your Property Trust Wills for a fixed fee of £303.00 including VAT and disbursements. Act now, call Katy Delaney at The Byrne Practice

Tickhill St Mary’s Celebrate World Book Day! On Thursday March 3rd it was World Book Day. World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. It’s the biggest celebration of its kind; a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world. The main aim of World Book Day in the UK is to encourage children to enjoy books and reading. Here at St Mary’s we marked World Book Day with our annual dressing up day on Friday 4th March when all children and staff were encouraged to come to school dressed as a book character. A fabulous day was had by all – the finale being the whole school fancy dress parade. Well done to all who took part and a special thank you to all our parents for helping to provide such wonderful costumes.
“I enjoyed seeing the teachers dress up!” Alice Y4 “I enjoyed being ‘The Boy in a Dress’! It was fun!” Max Y5 “I came as Lucy from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It was fun to dress up!” Bella Y2 “I came as a ladybird from ‘The Ladybird That Heard’. It was fun!” Matilda YR 32

Tickhill Estfeld School World Book Day!
On Thursday 3rd March we celebrated World Book Day 2016 during the school day and in the evening with pupils returning to school for some fun reading events. During the morning school held a paired reading event, which we do regularly as we know that it is something that our pupils enjoy. Each pupil in school has a reading partner in another class with whom they share a book or two. The youngest pupils enjoy reading with an older child, listening to a story and perhaps getting a little help with those tricky words, whilst the older pupils enjoy being the expert for the session; helping someone always makes them feel good! After a busy day at school our pupils in Key Stage 2 returned in the evening ready to battle wits against each other in the World Book Day Quiz. The questions were certainly challenging and the popcorn during the interval helped to sustain their concentration, with the winning team all receiving a book of their choice. The results was very close with 34

only a few points separating the teams. Well done to all who entered. Our Reception and Key Stage 1 pupils went home as usual at the end of the school day, but as bedtime approached they returned to school dressed in pyjamas and dressing gowns for their bedtime story. They were delighted to hear their storytellers reading to them in classrooms that had been transformed with into calm, relaxing and comfortable places, with the help of cushions and soft lighting. After several stories and some hot chocolate the children returned home sleepy-eyed and ready for bed – indeed some had already nodded off. We know that everybody, enjoyed the evening and hope that it has encouraged everybody to read more often, perhaps even every night before bedtime at home. Thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who helped to organise and run the evening events and thank you to all of the parents for their kind word and compliments – we do appreciate them.

Tickhill Music Society CONCERT REVIEW - FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY 2016
Tickhill & District W.I. Our speaker for the next meeting will be Jane Price whose subject is A Funny Thing Happened On The Way. The meeting on Wednesday 6th April is at 2pm in the Parish Room when visitors are most welcome.
The second half of Tickhill Music Society’s Winter concert season began in fine style with the duo Advance notice of a coffee morning and Clothes of Jane Lindsay (Cello) and Jennifer Hughes (Piano). Their programme began in France with a Show by M&Co. is on Tuesday 10th May in the Methodist Hall. three movement Sonata by Debussy composed in the early years of World War 1. This was not • 742867 T a hazy, French Impressionist work but a much sterner affair. After a rather sombre Prologue there followed a Serenade which featured plenty of Staccato playing and then a robust Finale.
Janet Sully
Leaving France behind, the rest of the music was Germanic, the composers being Beethoven, Brahms and Richard Strauss. Beethoven’s Sonata No.4 in C major was written in his later years when he was beginning to go deaf, an affliction which did not seem to stifle his creative urges. This is a two movement work where the Andante was crisp and sparkling and the second movement progressed from Adagio to a lively Allegro vivace. The first half ended with three Brahms songs, arranged for the Cello. The second half was devoted to Richard Strauss, his Sonata in F major being composed in his late teens. The first movement is labelled con brio which means with vigour, spirit and fire and this called for some adroit finger work from both performers. The second movement was a more sombre affair whilst the Finale was crisp and lively. The cellist produced a rich, round, full-bodied tone from her instrument and throughout the pianist was an alert and sensitive supporter. Together they made a fully integrated and harmonious team. Altogether this was a splendid concert and another Tickhill Music Society winner! Philip Mottram. T 36

Tickhill and District Lions On Saturday 5th March our Charter Night Dinner and Dance, held at Doncaster Golf Club, Bessacarr celebrated 38 years of local presence after our club was formed out of North Notts Lions Club in 1978. With excellent food, music to get everyone dancing and a wide range of prizes in the raffle a good night was had by all. As I prepare this report a fortnight before Easter it is pleasing to know that all sixty of our Giant Easter Eggs are with hotels, restaurants, pubs, shops and clubs for raffling off to customers. We are so grateful for the kindness of all the businesses and their customers in supporting the fundraising which enables us to maintain our help for needy individuals, causes and charities. Sunday 30th April will be a big day for Tickhill with the Tour de Yorkshire cycle races passing through
on the same day as the Scarecrow Festival is being held. With more than five hours between the race for the ladies and the men’s race, Tickhill is keen to provide suitable facilities for visitors who may stay all day scarecrow spotting and watching the cycling. Lions will be running a barbecue stall alongside the Scarbrough Arms Beer Festival to assist with feeding the expected crowds. On Friday 24th June there will be another event in the Scarbrough Arms car park - our second ‘Summer Bash’, featuring live music, good food and real ales and on the Sunday of that weekend Thorne Rural Lions Club are organising an 11 mile walk from Doncaster to Thorne in aid of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust. Tickhill Residents’ Association Although initially formed as a Ratepayers’ Association, the Tickhill Residents’ Association has taken its present name since the introduction of the council tax. However, after all these years of existence, a decision was taken at the AGM of the Residents’ Association in February to dissolve the Association. It was felt that there are today sufficient other bodies, groups and organizations in the town, particularly the Advisory Committee of Tickhill Town Council (to which all local organisations are encouraged to send a representative), to ensure that residents of Tickhill can air issues of concern. In addition to this, Tickhill Town Council gives time for residents to raise issues at the beginning of each twice monthly Council Meeting. In terms of planning, the Neighbourhood Plan, formally adopted following last July’s referendum, now affords useful protection in several areas. An Implementation Group is beginning to work with Tickhill Town Council to tackle some of the more aspirational aspects of the Plan such as parking, pedestrian safety, grass verges etc raised by residents during its inception. When all cheques have been cleared and all monies paid, the Association will have around £400 in the bank. This money is to be donated to Tickhill in Bloom. Residents, businesses and visitors alike all benefit from the sterling work this group does in making our town an attractive and colourful place in which to live. The Committee of the Residents’ Association would like to thank everyone for their very valuable help and support over the years. It has been a privilege to work on behalf of you, the residents, to help make Tickhill the vibrant community that it is today. Thank you.

Working Party – Tickhill’s Trees Tickhill’s extensive range of trees is important to the preservation of the character of the town. DMBC manages those that are on public land and protects important trees on private land through Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). It has become apparent that their maintenance actions (pruning, felling, trimming, replanting) sometimes come as a surprise to residents, whose own views may differ. The Town Council has therefore asked Tony Sheridan (Tickhill Countryside Group) to form a local working group to liaise with DMBC – this will also comprise Tim Bryant (DMBC), Nigel Cannings (TTC), John Hoare (Neighbourhood Plan), David Jinks (Friends of the Mill Dam), Margaret Marrison (Footpaths), Trevor Moss (Save Tickhill’s Trees). The main aim is to provide local views to DMBC to assist them in developing and maintaining a forward plan for the Town’s treescape and communicating this. We will never please everyone but we can seek to avoid surprises.
The first meeting will discuss: - Current planned actions, including the replacement of the Bawtry Road limes. - Minor maintenance for the Tour de Yorkshire. - Completion of the update of the Tree Preservation Orders - some of the partial updates already need minor amendments/deletions and there may be desirable additions. - Development of a simple procedure for consultation regarding trees on public land (which are not subject to TPOs). Plan for Rotherham Road and other approaches. - Feedback of information. If you have any current concerns please contact Tony Sheridan (01302 742556) or other members of the working party. T

By Rachel Leverton
Spring has Sprung Digging is really only something I do with ground that is being cultivated for the first time. Mostly I use a fork and work in fertiliser as I go along. I like to use an organic fertiliser and tend to go for poultry manure pellets. I sprinkle them round shrubs, roses and perennials. The application instructions will vary but generally it’s about three handfuls to the square metre. It’s magical stuff when lightly forked in. It gives the plants a boost and builds up the levels of beneficial soil bacteria. Now is the time I dig up my overcrowded border plants and split them into smaller clumps. These can be used to plug the gaps elsewhere in my garden, or given to friends to help plug the gaps in theirs!
How to… Plant a container-grown shrub. Soak the compost for an hour before planting. Make sure the root ball of the shrub is sufficiently moist. Check to shrub is suitable for the site. Dig a hole that is larger than the root ball. Work well-rotted garden-compost or planting mixture into the bottom of the hole and mix it with the soil you removed when you dug the hole. Plant the shrub o that the top of the root ball is just fractionally below the finished soil level. Firm the earth around with your boot. Water the plant in and spread an organic mulch on top.
Make sure you use a bit of fertiliser and water them in if the ground is dry. I spread a good 3 inch / 8cm layer of mulch around my border, between the plants. Choose from wellrotted manure or garden compost, chipped bark or cocoa shells. This seals in moisture and keeps the weeds down, essential at this time of year when they start growing like...well...weeds! If you haven’t already done so give your roses a prune taking care to remove any dead or diseased stems completely. 42

The numbers were drawn by William Wright aged 9 and his brother Oliver, 7, who were down from Denby Dale to celebrate Mothering Sunday with their Mum and both of their Grandmas, Chris Wright and Hazel Horrigan. They had earlier joined other youngsters distributing pots of primulas to the ladies in the congregation. Many thanks to the ladies of the flower team for making the pots look so attractive. 1st.

2008(Bawtry) SQUADRON SERVING OTHERS When we decide to join the air cadets its on a voluntary basis, we don’t get paid and we let our cadets take the glory. But our cadets deserve it. As well as achieving and experiencing new opportunities for themselves they also give up their time to help others. The cadets take time out to help with RAFA, SUE RYDER, THE POPPY APPEAL and now the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION. Along with the usual school, college, university and work commitments our cadets have also volunteer for bag packing days at local supermarkets, bucket collections at the Keepmoat Stadium and even standing out in the rain for the yearly Poppy Appeal. The cadets also need to collect funds for their own squadron too. Since we try and be a presence in our area, and appear at many local events throughout the year, we are also beginning to try and raise donations and sponsorship for ourselves. We teach our Cadets First Aid and CPR, they walk for miles for the yearly Cosford Marches and finally they learn how to survive out side with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Adventure Training camps. All this enriches a teenager’s life in so many ways. To reiterate what the cadets is about, it’s an organisation that uses the discipline, respect and fellowship of the Royal Air Force. It creates determination, dedication and ambition in young 50

people. It can help create a career or at least access to one. It can help a young person build up their life skills, their confidence and give them experiences they would not necessarily ever have the resources to do. It can also give them the chance to go to places they could never imagine going to and create friendships that can last a lifetime. This year 2008(BAWTRY) AIRCADETS is 60 years old and a celebration day is being organized to commemorate this, we are beginning to hear from some Ex-Cadets and will be very interested to hear their stories and how the Air Cadets affected their lives.
If anyone is interested in sponsoring or making a donation to the air cadets please contact us, every little bit is appreciated. Avoid Fraud
Telephone Fraud Avoid becoming a Victim There are certain crimes that tend to affect the more vulnerable members of our community. Telephone fraud is one of those. Older people are regularly targeted by criminals via their telephone, nearly £24m was lost to phone scams in 2014. In simple terms, fraud is when: • A criminal uses dishonest methods to take something valuable from another person • A person pretends to be someone else in order to trick you • Something that is meant to look like the real thing in order to deceive. The good news is that we can all take some simple steps to help us not becoming a victim of telephone fraud. Following these tips below will help prevent you becoming a victim. • Be careful if a company calls you to discuss your investments. They may build up your trust in them … but one evening may ring with an excellent opportunity too good to miss and you have to act fast to get this great deal. Keep calm and hang up, do not give in to pressure and never invest without carrying out research. • Criminals call pretending to be from you bank or building society or police claiming a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card or your credit card has been cloned. They may ask for your card pin number. Do not give this out, put the phone down and inform the police. • You receive a call from Microsoft or other large IT company informing you that your computer has a virus. You are asked to download software onto your machine to fix it and then provide your card details. Keep calm, hang up. Keep your anti-virus software up to date, warn other about the call. • A call from a charity asking if you will donate to their cause by setting up a direct debit, not necessarily a fraud attempt but more a nuisance call perhaps. If you do agree then you will receive 52

further calls asking for more money. Never give your card details out over the phone. Devices called ‘Call Blockers’ are available to purchase, some are better than others, one of the best is called ‘True Call’ and used by many Trading Standards departments. Details can be found here: www.truecall.co.uk or by ringing 0800 0 336 339 Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS), it will not stop all unwanted calls but will reduce the number you receive, details can be found by ringing 020 7291 3320 or visiting: www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html Contact your telephone provider, some provide an additional call blocking service for a small additional monthly fee. Some newer telephones you can now purchase has the ‘True Call’ device pre-installed. Mobile phone ‘Apps’ are available, some free, some for a few pounds that act as a nuisance call blocker, they are available for both Android and IPhone devices. Thank you I should like to thank those who showed care and concern for my husband, Derek Erridge, after his fall outside Lockwood’s on February 11th. Despite his refusal to wait for an ambulance, he was later treated by the GP and checked over in hospital and has since made a good recovery. The following personal history may help to explain his stubborn attitude of independence.
Janet Erridge T
Derek Erridge: WW2 veteran and Tickhill resident for 30 years Derek Erridge is nearly 96. He was 19 years of age when war broke out in 1939. The year before he had voluntarily enlisted in the artillery, so was already well trained as an anti-aircraft gunner. Having been stationed first at Chatham and then in Liverpool to protect the docks, he was then posted abroad. His destination was the Mediterranean but they had to sail around most of Africa, calling at Sierra Leone, Capetown and finally to Cairo. For a few months he went on sorties into the desert to recapture parts of Libya. One of his duties was to guard Italian prisoners of war. Then in March 1941 the order came to embark for Crete. For a couple of months life there was almost idyllic: Derek could exchange bully beef for roast rabbit or a bowl of milk. The Cretans really welcomed the Allies. Then in May 1941 the Germans decided to invade Crete, which they achieved with all forces, particularly parachutists. The battle for Canea was intense: Derek lost many of his comrades there. The survivors were obliged to retreat in disorganised groups towards the south of the island. They were strafed by enemy planes. Derek, who until then would not eat marrow, survived on gourds from the fields and water from the streams. Hundreds of wanderers took refuge in the caves near the southern shore, from where the British navy were supposed to rescue them. But it was too late for Derek and his companions. Having surrendered, they were marched as POW’s back to the north coast, where Derek was treated 54
Tickhill Today
for wounds to his arm and leg. Soon began the long and exhausting journey in cattle trucks across Greece and Macedonia to the main camp in Wolfsburg, Austria, not far from the border with Slovenia. Not liking the vast camps of 3,000 men, Derek chose to do manual labour with working groups in the mountains, lumber jacking, farming or maintaining railways. He learned to get by in German, to ski and to survive. Each week he received a food parcel from the Red Cross. Three times he tried to escape on his own and each time was hauled back to spend a few weeks in solitary confinement. His unit was finally liberated by the British 8th army in 1945 and a fortnight later he was flown home in a converted Lancaster Bomber. In a sweet shop he asked for chocolate without having the necessary coupons. Upbraided by the shopkeeper, he told him where he’d spent the previous 4 years...and got the chocolate! Upon retirement Derek moved to Tickhill in 1986. He served as prison chaplain for the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for 20 years and as a cub leader in Tickhill for some time. Although frail nowadays, he is intent upon remaining as self-reliant as possible. T

Gala Update Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to the gala so far. We still have places left for stallholders, attractions and food sellers, but spaces are going fast so please do not leave it too late. We are particularly looking for local societies to contribute to our gala so if you run one of these and would like a pitch please use the contact details below, we would love to hear from you. Each year all the money we raise goes back into the general fabric of our Scout and Guide HQ which enables many young people to meet each week, together with other clubs and societies. Last year we used the money raised at the gala to: Refurbish and reinstate the back meeting room to a good standard Install a new lowered ceiling with energy saving insulation and LED lighting
Well known High Street brands at amazing prices
Waterproofing the guttering to seal leaks from the roof therefore maintaining the fabric of our building.
This year our building will be 30 years old and very soon it will need re wiring, this is an expensive undertaking and therefore we hope for a good gala! Service Dear Friends, Most churches prepare for Easter by organising lent courses. I was at one recently and we reminded ourselves that Jesus predicted his death and resurrection but his followers did not get it. Rather they were busy fighting amongst themselves about who would be the greatest after Jesus leaving them. Jesus found out and his response is as follows:
leadership examples around you and at your own leadership style as well. If you’re a parent, how do you lead your children? As a husband, how do you serve your wife? Wives, how do you serve your husbands? What about being the boss at your workplace or in the community? How do you serve? Service is love as well. I want to remind my Welsh friends that in March you celebrated St. David’s Day. As at the time of writing this piece, my Irish friends were also preparing to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. These two saints are good examples of the fact that good leadership requires love and service.
So Jesus called them to him and said, “As you know, the kings and great men of the earth lord it over the people; but among you it is different. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant. And whoever wants to be greatest of all must be the slave of all. For even I, the Messiah, am not here to be served, but to help others, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”’ (Mark 10: 42 - 45) (Living Bible)
This Easter season, I wonder if I can remind you that Jesus served his followers and others even to his death. He rose from death and empowers us to love as he did. He is our servant-leader and wants us to follow him. We can only do so if we ask God to empower and guide our leadership and relationships with other people. He also entreats us to love and serve others as he did.
In today’s world, a leader usually has special privileges and is treated better than everyone else. I wonder how you would feel if you arrive at work one day and find your boss cleaning the office. How about your husband cooking you a meal after you have spent a long day with the children or at work? And what if he did that often?
Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam
Some of us may find these illustrations very unusual? This is because some people and cultures have a different conception of what leadership and service are. Some people even see service as a form of weakness. However, Jesus tells us and shows us that service is a sign of strength. It takes inner strength to serve those around you. I wonder if leaders who find it difficult to serve are simply afraid of their weaknesses.

May God bless you in all your endeavours especially, as you serve this month. Yours sincerely,
Methodist Minister for Adwick, Auckley, Bawtry Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road, and Tickhill.
Jesus tells us that our leadership should be different from what the world expects. I wonder if I can remind you that being a leader involves helping others. Leadership also includes being prepared to accept your fault when you are wrong. What about being honest and accepting that you do not know the answer to a problem? That is a sign of good leadership. It will even be prudent if you ask for help as you lead people. I wonder if you can pause and take a look at the 64

Knickers. Why do we always refer to a pair of knickers when they are a single garment? It is because some 2-300 years ago when they were introduced they were made in pairs, one for each leg fastened together at the waist. Not a lot of people know that - unless they were present at our February meeting when Janet Stain gave a humourous talk on “A Brief History of Knickers” complete with many samples which caused a great deal of hilarity. Thank you Janet for an amusing and informative evening. Our next Occasional Paper switches attention from Tickhill to Wadworth with a focus on Wadworth Hall. After a brief description of the Hall’s architecture, the paper outlines the main families who have lived there. These include the Wordsworths, original owners of the Hall, Leeds merchant Robert Coulman and 66

Sir Ronald and Lady Vera Matthews. Links with the polar explorer Rear Admiral Sir James Clark Ross are explained. Accounts of some indoor and outdoor servants employed by the Hall’s families complete the Paper which is on sale at KSM, Castlegate, price £2. At our next meeting on Thursday 21st April Simon Tomson will talk on Lincolnshire medieval life based on information in some medieval documents known as the Luterall Rolls. It is likely that Lincolnshire life and Tickhill life of the period would have many similarities so we may get an idea of how our distant forbears lived. As usual the meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate starting at 7.30pm (doors open 7.00pm) and visitors will be welcome. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 744278 969696

Newsletter Tickhill Town Council - APRIL 2016
As some of you will be aware there have been many changes and cut backs in DMBC and many resources are stretched, or reduced or even none existent now, but nonetheless we must all continue to strive for our own community so any repairs or complaints please report to the number below. Please do not ignore it: report it, which includes anything from litter to dog foul, to potholes in the road. Any D.M.B.C. Issue can be reported to 736000 Or Email customer. services@doncaster.gov.uk I can be contacted by e mail tickhillcouncil@gmail.com And our website is www. tickhilltowncouncil.co.uk Pavilion booking to be made to Jamie on 07591 179658 This month we see two exciting events in Tickhill when the Tour de Yorkshire passes through our town on the same day (30th April) as the annual Scarecrow Festival. Tickhill Town Council is aware that many members of the community are arranging a series of events to mark the occasion putting Tickhill on the map once again. A well done to everyone in advance; all we need is the fine weather! The ever-increasing costs of new housing and moving home has contributed to the increasing numbers of families improving/extending their homes and this very often requires planning permission. This Council spends much time very carefully considering all planning applications (small as well as large) to try to ensure that the ethos of Tickhill is preserved. The Neighbourhood Plan has had an impact on the final decisions made and the Tickhill Town Council requests you to make sure you have the correct 70

planning consent in place, whether it is for a conservatory, extension or a shop change of use, please check before you start making any firm arrangements. It could cost you dearly. Unlike previous years Tickhill Town Council now has to reproduce a set of plans for any consultation that is made increasing their costs. All plans are available at the Council meeting which is advertised on the two notice boards in Tickhill and on the ever expanding website. Please make sure you look weekly, as many residents complain that they “didn’t know” The Financial year end is now upon us and I much work is to be done in preparing the accounts and day to day books for the internal and external auditors. It is always a busy time of year for the clerk so please be patient if emails are not answered immediately. Mentions of spring seem a little premature at the time of writing this newsletter – but we live in hope! Nevertheless the initial signs are evident in the flower beds and lawns and once again Tickhill Council will be supporting the Tickhill in Bloom group to provide their superb displays on the roadside approaches into the town and at the Buttercross. Orders have been placed for this year’s summer plants which will be planted out at the end of May. Before then Tickhill Residents should reap the full benefit from the beds of winter plants. Tickhill Town Council’s thanks all the volunteers who raise money to purchase the plants and then plant them out and maintain the beds throughout the summer. Thoughts are now turning to summer activities and both Tickhill Bowling Club and Tickhill Tennis Club start their seasons at the Tithes Lane Recreation Ground at the end of March. We know the Clubs always welcome new members and we hope they have successful seasons and are blessed with good weather.

TICKHILL PARISH ROOM We always seem to have something new and interesting at the Parish Room. Every month I wonder what I will find to say (it’s never a problem!) This month we are wondering if the Cinema Club will take off? There have been several small meetings to discuss this possible ‘event’ and we are getting closer. The obvious problem is who will put their names down to help – either with the setting up of the ‘Club’, the setting up of the equipment if it goes ahead, the setting up of films to watch, money to collect, people to elect……. A new group means endless little tasks, and a lot of ‘setting up’! If you are interested in helping ring Dorothy Colcutt on (01302) 742140. Our regular bookings continue as follows: Monday Ukulele Group, 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. (07950 747551) Tuesday Yoga, 7.15 p.m. – 8.45 p.m. (07901 975064) Wednesday First Wednesday of the month - WI at 2 p.m. (01302 742867) – Les Francophiles de Tickhill at 7.30 p.m. (01302 745885)
Tickhill Methodist Ladies Fellowship
Thursday Second Thursday of the month - Coffee and Company at 10 a.m. – 11.30 a.m. (01302 742180) Every Thursday – Slimming World at 5.30 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. (07825 686437)
We are having return visits from two favourites in April. On Tuesday April 12th there will be an organ recital by John Marsden in the Church then on Tuesday April 26th we will be entertained by the very talented Stones. Both these meetings will start at 2.30p.m.
13th April – Parish Room AGM 15th April – Parish Room Quiz Night, £5 Pie and Peas, ring Lesley on 01302 744600 to book your Pie and you Quiz sheet! Book early – this is usually a sell-out!!
