2016 edition

Don’t be afraid of change. You may lose something good, but you wil gain something better

The August issues will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th July. Your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time in this busy period heading towards the school summer holidays is much appreciated. We do take the distribution of the magazines very seriously and have an easy way for people to let us know if they aren’t receiving their copy. If you know of someone who isn’t getting a copy of the magazine or perhaps you picked this copy up from one of our pick up points locally as you don’t get one through your door, then please text ‘1TODAY + your street name’ to 66777 and we will do our best to put that right for you. Enjoy July and I will be back in a months’ time with your August magazine.

Best wishes,

Another school year is coming to an end, and another set of young people are heading towards a change of nursery/school/college/apprenticeship/further education/employment. Leaving the place that they will have hopefully been very happy for many years can be a sad time for both children and their parents (I remember children’s and parent’s tears during and after the year 6 leavers services well) but it is also a positive time when we can look forward to what is to come and the new opportunities available. My eldest has just finished school and we now have the wait for the A level results that will determine where he ends up next; he is very philosophical about it – whatever will be, will be! Whatever change you or your loved ones may be facing over the coming months, I hope it will be change for the better.

This means you could drop your children off with us for a healthy breakfast before they go to school nursery. Who needs stressful mornings? Nursery fees are frequently in the news. Our fees are amongst the lowest in Doncaster. Children eligible for nursery funding can also have their funding “Stretched” to cover school holidays so that there are no changes to your weekly nursery fees during the holidays. It allows you to budget and not worry about weeks with no funding. We’re currently getting ready for the annual Tickhill Gala. Our theme this year will nd bring a smile to your face so watch out for us on Saturday 2 July. Take a look at our new website www.wilsicnursery.com and especially at our Parent Testimonials page! Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, Apparently the weather there is really hot at the moment. Just when I have come on holiday to find the sun it appears in England. But all the Staff and volunteers are keeping the animals in their care cool and will be making sure they are not overheating g on hot summer days. y

Gri We recently arranged our Annual Dog Walk in Bawtry Forest which was wonderful. It was really special to see the dogs that had been adopted taking their new owners for a walk! It was especially heart-warming to see Gri, a dog rescued from Romania. When he arrived he was very sad and depressed. We had been waiting for the right people to adopt him for quite some time. Eventually he did find his new loving home and it was a very special moment for us all to see him looking happy and confident. confident Our fundraising is continuing with M&S, Wheatley Hall Road. We will be bag-packing on 2nd July and will be collecting outside the store on 10th July. Please come along and say hello hello. We are so grateful to M&S together with other supporters, Direct Line (who have recently raised £800 on a charity day for us) Rail Track, Sainsburys, Morrisons and all local businesses that help in any way they can. Without this support we would not be in a position to carry on with our work. work

Finding g a forever home weekly basis, but we must look forward and be positive. We will always y be there to pick p up p the pieces. p As I said at the start of the write up, I am on holiday at the moment in a very small working village in Greece. I have been coming here for many years. However about 5 years ago the cat population escalated to such a degree it was totally out of control. There was no charity/rescue centre available apart from one English lady who did her best. I discussed the situation with the Mayflower Manager and we talked about how the village could start raising funds for a Neuter Programme. To cut along story short, lots of both English and Greek like-minded people came together, and with a very sympathetic Vet, their Charity was formed. After 5 years they now have a large number of people helping in any way they can, raising money towards neuter programmes and taking care of any sick, injured or abandoned animals. Also raising awareness which is most important. We are so proud to have been a very small part of this project. project Many countries are now realising that animal welfare is important. Most shops, restaurants and tavernas in the villages and towns now have collecting boxes so while on your holidays (abroad or in the UK) a donation no matter how small can make such a difference. difference If you are looking for that special pet to be part of your life, please come along and speak to us. We look forward to seeing g yyou soon. Best Wishes

Name: Charley Sex: Female Date into care: FEB 2016 Age: 4 years Good with dogs: ?? Good with cats: Some Good with children:Yes Charley arrived at Mayflower with her buddy, Missy, due to a bereavement in the family. Their owner felt that she was unable to cope so asked for them to come into our care. Charley is the more timid of the pair but is a fussy-puss once she gets to know you. All she needs is a little time and patience. Her new owner/s must realise that, as a semilonghaired cat, Charley will need to be brushed at least weekly to keep her beautiful coat in tip-top condition. She quite likes it though so it shouldn’t be a problem. A home with Missy would be perfect but not essential.

My name is Sooty and I came into Mayflower’s care after my owner died. There was nobody in the family who could take care of me. I missed my Mum very much at first but now that I’ve settled things aren’t so bad. I try to make friends with the other cats but I’m told that my social skills need a little finetuning as I can be a little overpowering at times. I would be better with a female companion I’m just a fun-loving guy who deserves a 2nd chance. Could I come home with you? C

In May our Year 5 class visited Northumberland for four days. As the weather was good they were also able to take full advantage of th he nearby beach, playing games there in the e evenings and before breakfast. In early April the Year 6 pupils visited the Kingswood Centre at Colomendy, North Wales W l and d on the h outbound b d journey j the h party called in at the Imperial War Museum North at Manchester. Y5/6 Whitby Residential Trip

On Monday 6th June, Y5 and Y6 from Tickhill St Mary’s Primary School departed on an extraordinary trip to Whitby (we were going for four days!) Arts Review

& what’s going on - July 2016 HILARY

Sarah Villeneau S Saturday d 9 July. l Have you ever wanted to take part in the making of an artwork? And have you ever wanted to get completely naked with thousands of other people? The artist Spence Tunick is going to be working with a throng of people who want to get their kit off together in Hull this month. The Ferens Art Gallery are organising the event – sorry – it’s being called a ‘site-specific-commission’. Actually you won’t be completely naked, Tunick is going to have the participants painted in body paint to reference the colours of the sea found in the Ferens Gallery seascape -paintings. Imagine the logistics of this exercise! It’s quite mind-boggling…all that painting up and then do they send you home still the blue-green of the deep sea? Tunick’s work is great! I know people who have been part of these photoshoots. On a warm day it could be a wonderful experience. If you fancy it visit www.hull2017. co.uk/seaofhull (see it’s all part of Hull city of culture) Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: until 3rd July: Janet Waring: ‘Regenerative’. 16th July – 11th September Doncaster Art Club. Why should I make a Will? Everybody with any form of asset however insignificant it may seem should have a Will professionally prepared. Often people think ‘I don’t have anything to leave’ or ‘I’m too young to make a Will’ or ‘I’ll do it another day’. Unfortunately death is one thing that we cannot predict. Dying without a Will can have lengthy and potentially expensive consequences for your family and loved ones during what is already a very difficult time. It could also mean that the people who you want to inherit your assets or who you think will inherit your assets actually do not. You should make a Will if any of the following apply to you; • You are cohabiting with your partner particularly if the property is not owned jointly by you and your partner. • You have children (particularly if they are under 18). • You have family members from whom you are estranged. • You are separated but not yet divorced. • You want to make provision for persons other than your spouse. • You have stepchildren who you class as your own. • You are worried about care fees. The above are just some of the reasons why you should make a Will there are many many more! Our fees for preparing a Will are fixed we don’t add on hidden extras and for the month of July 2016 only with this advert we will prepare your Wills at the following discounted rates; • Single Wills – only £ 85 plus VAT (£102.00) • Mirror Wills – only £125 plus VAT (£150.00) • Property Trust Wills – only £225 plus VAT & £3 Disbursements (£253.00) To arrange your appointment to make a Will please telephone Katy Delaney at The Byrne Practice Solicitors on 01302 711211 or email katy.delaney@tbplaw.co.uk

BE ORDINARY

Dear Friends, It is the season of exams and saying goodbyes to pupils and students. It is also a season of proms. I did not realise that proms were organised for all levels, including nurseries, till I came to Yorkshire about 15 years ago. Before that, I assumed that proms were for the secondary level only. This was another cultural shock for me. One argument I have heard about proms is that it is a way of encouraging the pupils to aspire onto greater heights. Yes, it is good to encourage children to aim high. By the way, the ‘motto’ of the middle school I attended in my hometown is “Aim High’. I can still hear the words of my late head teacher, Albert, repeating at daily school assemblies that we were being prepared for the future so we should ‘aim high’. As to what it means to ‘aim high’, most of us thought that we were being prepared to be engineers, doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers, nurses, and so RQ +HQFH WKHUH ZDV VWLÎ? It seems that about 40 years on and the world has not changed when it comes to preparing our children for the future. Ζ DP FXUUHQWO\ UHČľHFWLQJ RQ WKH LVVXH RI ‘encouragement’ and I have been challenged by the words of William Martin, which are as follows: 38 TICKHILL TODAY

Exam Thanks Exam season is now coming to a close and we would like to thank all of our students for their dedication and exemplary behaviour during this time. During months of intensive study and revision sessions they have shown positivity and a desire to succeed and we are incredibly proud of how hard they have worked. Good luck to you all for the results you deserve in August!

Uniform Consultation A huge thank you to all our parents, students and staff for their participation in the consultation on our uniform policy. Views were canvassed and in many cases provided passionate responses both in favour and against some or all of the suggested changes. One view was very clear in that parents felt the college was right to pursue a stricter adherence to the expected uniform and that current fashions around tight trousers and short lycra skirts should be challenged and not accepted. Having considered all views and potential consequences we have decided not to go ahead with the proposed changes. Instead, we will be tweaking and clarifying our current uniform and with a solid endorsement from parents will enforce our expectations and adherence to the policy. Once again I thank you for your responses to the consultation and for your current and anticipated support with our uniform policy.

A warm welcome to our new year 7’s We look forward to offering a warm STWCC welcome to our new year 7 students and their parents at the Y6-7 Induction Days/Evening on 5th and 6th July 2016. These are action packed days where our new students can explore the college and meet their future classmates and teachers. Keith Binks Headteacher

Tickhill Neighbourhood Watch Regrettably the few remaining active street coordinators of Tickhill Neighbourhood Watch group decided at their last meeting that due to poor attendance at the meetings over the past eighteen months that there is little point in continuing the group. In spite of over 40 notices of the meetings being delivered we have seen a maximum of 7 attendees with often only 4 people turning up. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of police presence at the meetings. It seems that with police numbers dropping and the remaining personnel being stretched and with changing shift patterns they have not been 60 TICKHILL TODAY

able to spare anyone to attend. This is at a time when you would have thought that they could do with all the help they can get. I would like to thank all the people who over the years have given their support but those that remain feel that their efforts are now not being rewarded and this is the time to draw the group to a close and consequently no more meetings will be held. If anyone sees anything worrying or suspicious they should report the incident on the 101 number. Bernard Rounthwaite (coordinator) TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Tickhill and District At our last meeting of the season in May, Ian Morgan gave a fascinating talk on “the Curious World of Olde Time Punishments”. Ian’s specialist area is crime and punishment from times past and he also acts as a guide for English Heritage, primarily at Bolsover Castle. As well as topic areas we anticipated – stocks, birching, various forms of capital punishment - his talk also covered distinctly eccentric cases of the punishment of horses and carts and even trains!

and the Archaeology Museum. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 15th September when, after a brief AGM, our speaker will be Janet Niepokojczycka, whose talk is entitled “Tales of Robin Hood”. The full programme for the coming year can be viewed on the Society’s website www. tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk/news. We meet at 7.30 in the Methodist Chapel Schoolroom on Northgate and all, especially prospective new members, are welcome.

The Society’s summer trip this year will be to Lincoln, led by Lloyd Powell, and will include the Cathedral, the Castle, the Victorian Prison 66 TICKHILL TODAY

Tickhill Ti khill Town T Council C il - July J l 2016 As July J l spee e dil dily appr p oaches h so do do the school summer holidays! The Town Council hopes the children’s activities will go ahead again this year but volunteers are still desperately needed please. Last year over 200 children attended to take part in football and rounders; the event was truly successful. Funding has been received to help with refreshments and last year some equipment was bought. If you can help please contact the clerk to the council on 07591175630 or by e mail at tickhillcouncil@gmail. com to confirm your attendance and help. (Football enthusiasts please!) Do not forget to attend the Tickhill Gala on 2nd July and the Scruffy Dog Show on 3rd July 2016, both at the Recreation Ground and proceeds are for charitable causes. Also, there will be a treasure hunt on Yorkshire Day (1st August) starting at the Millstone followed by a Yorkshire quiz and supper. Look out for posters advertising ticket sales. Also Tickhill Town Council would ask you to give full consideration to your nominations for: The Young Person of the Year Award, for a child who has achieved more than that is expected of a child of that age. The Community Award, for an Adult who has given more than expected to the Community in whatever way. The Alison Award, for an 11-25year old for Achievement. The recipients must be Residents of Tickhill. Forms are available from the library; please use this method so the Independent Panel of judges have them in the same format. Please submit your nominations to The Clerk to the Council enabling a portfolio to build up over the next few months and then handed to the Independent Panel of Judges. The council have been requested to remind you all about the need to recycle your refuse. A list is below of what can and cannot be put out in your green boxes.

This is the Annual meeting of the Advisory Group when the Chairman and deputy will be elected. Members of the Town Council sit on the committee but do not usually Chair the meeting.
