2016 edition

If it is important to you ,you wil find a way. If not you wil find an excuse

June already 2016 is flying by. We are heading towards the prime time for summer fairs, galas and family fun days, this month and over the next few issues you will find details of many such events on these pages. If you are organising an event this summer then be sure to email details to me. We do take the distribution of the magazines very seriously and have an easy way for people to let us know if they aren’t receiving their copy. If you know of someone who isn’t getting a copy of the magazine or perhaps you picked this copy up from one of our pick up points locally as you don’t get one through your door, then please text ‘1TODAY + your street name’ to 66777 and we will do our best to put that right for you. The July issues will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th June. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.

Best wishes,

Exam time is once again upon us. The controversial SATs exams have been completed, and in schools and colleges everywhere students are currently sitting GCSE’s, AS levels and A levels as well as a wide range of other examinations now available to our young people. I have 2 children in the midst of this again this year and can sympathise with all those who can’t wait for exam season to be over!

Wilsic Road Day Nursery Well what have we been doing over the few weeks? We took part in the Scarecrow Festival with an amazing set of scarecrows showing the developmental stages of a butterfly. It was lovely to see so many of the children looking at all the scarecrows in the village. We took a group of children to Sandal Beat wood using the bus. They were complimented on their excellent behaviour by lots of people. The children enjoyed making bird feeders, bridge building, playing in the mud kitchen and an outdoor picnic. They were exhausted by the time they came back with lots of tales about the adventure they’d had. We’ve been taking advantage of the lovely weather with al fresco lunches at the nursery, picnics on the artificial grass and trips to the park. The children came back from one trip telling me they’d been chased by a bear! There’ll be more adventures to tell you about next month. If you’d like any information about the nursery call us on 01302 742629. Take a look at our new website on www.wilsicnursery.com

Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, We are all very excited as we have been chosen by Marks & Spencer Wheatley Hall Road store to be their chosen charity of the year. They have asked whether we would like to go along and take part in a bag pack and bucket collections at their store. It is so wonderful to be chosen as there must have been lots of charities that were nominated. We feel very special working with such a prestigious company. So thank you for voting for us and we will look forward to working with you. At the end of April the cycle race Tour De Yorkshire came through Bawtry and Tickhill. Our volunteers were out and about in Bawtry raising money for us and we also had a Tom Bola stall in Tickhill . The Tom Bola was actually rained off and we left about 1.30 , however in 3 hours we raised £143 which was terrific, so thank you everyone that came to say hello. The race was terrific and the atmosphere was amazing so I hope everyone had a good time. We have started more building work, our kennels are quite noisy which annoys the residents of Bawtry so we are looking to alter them to try and make the kennels a more friendly place and not as intimidating when we have visitors to our Sanctuary. We must apologise as we are upside down again, but please bear with us.

Finding g a forever home Our table top sale a few Sundays ago went really well, so we have decided to arrange one every month. It will held in our reception at the Sanctuary and the dates are below. 29th May 19th June 17th July 14th August 18th Sept So add the above dates to your diary. Look forward to seeing you there. We have a vacancy within our Sanctuary for a Kennel Manager, Experience is essential, 40 hours per week, 5 days a week (including weekends) The right person needs to inspire and lead a team of volunteers and staff, they will also be responsible for the welfare and care of all of the Sanctuary dogs. Interested ? Please forward your cv to info@mayflowersanctuary. co.uk or post to the address below. If you would like any further information about our Sanctuary please do not hesitate to call us, or come along to our Sanctuary and look around to see the work we do. Hope to see you soon Bye for now

Arts Review & what’s going on - 2016

Jane Hamlyn I occasionally mention to you some wonderful event that will have long sold-out, which is probably very annoying, for which I apologise. In order not to miss out on hot selling shows, you need to put yourself on mailing lists which will plop information endlessly into your email inbox months ahead of time, and then you’ll perhaps be swift to the box office. Months ago, I almost missed out on tickets for the Pinter at The Lyceum in August. I had spotted Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart were to play the leads (star studded or what - & both of them Northerners !) but hadn’t expected every other sharp eyed Yorkshireman/woman to hit the ground running on the ticket purchase. Whether you love Pinter or have never seen any, this will be a play worth going to Sheffield for, if only for Gandalf and Star Trek …. And if you haven’t got the tickets by now, then you haven’t a hope. Sorry! But all is not lost on the Pinter score. Cast in Doncaster is putting on the ‘Birthday Party’ for one night only 8 June 7.30 www. castindoncaster.com and this is a tremendous play. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y Wed to Fri 10.00 – 16.30, Sat & Sun 10.30 – 4.15 Exhibition: until 26th June: David Venables: ‘Working Lives’ . This is one cracker of a painting show. There isn’t one picture in this show that I would not want on my wall at home. A wonderful painter, his subject is Doncaster, and what a sympathetic eye he has! And until 3rd July: Janet Waring: ‘Regenerative’ I have a remembrance of my A level biology course looking at this work, and jellyfish on Cornish beaches Life drawing: Saturday 25th June 11-1pm and 2 - 4pm Art History Lecture: Friday 3rd June: ‘Private Views - a Modern Perspective of Gardens’ this lecture looks at artists who have made paintings of gardens, including Monet, Klimt, Klee and Spencer. This comes hard on the heals of the Royal Academy’s sell out exhibition on Piccadilly. If you like gardens, flowers or Monet get along there, this one is for you. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums

Community Many Happy Returns Tickhill Country Market! Many of you have already discovered and shop at Tickhill’s own Country Market, which is situated in the schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church and which spreads itself to the front car-park on a fine day. The Market sells jam, preserves, honey, cakes, bread, pies and baking of all kinds, eggs, craftwork, soaps, plants and cut flowers, fruit, vegetables and it provides a very popular café. Over the years, I have bought many delicious cakes from the Market and from Taylors of Tickhill who stock a selection of Market products. Flourishing in my garden are Ruth Taylor’s plants which I bought when I first moved into the area, when the Market was held in the Parish Room. What I didn’t realise was that the Market has reached the grand old age of thirty years, first opening on Friday, 27th June 1986. The Market was formed originally by the Women’s Institute but became Tickhill Country Market in 2004, joining a chain of 300 Country Markets spread throughout the nation. In South Yorkshire alone there are markets in Doncaster, Holmfirth, Penistone, Sheffield, Hope Valley as well as Tickhill. The men and women of our Country Market don’t produce to become super rich but for the pleasure of gaining some return for their talents and expertise. Originally, each producer became 28 TICKHILL TODAY

a shareholder by handing over “the King’s shilling” and this tradition remains so you’ll have to fork out the princely sum of fivepence if you wish to join. The only other requirement is that you have to be at least sixteen years old. You become a member of a co-operative organisation which works together to sell the products on display. Just 10% is taken to cover the costs of running the Market. Everything sold must be produced, made by or grown by the seller. If you buy a plant at the Market, you know it will grow in your garden because it has been grown locally; the cakes are delicious because they are made locally by experts; the craft has been made by the person behind the table. All goods are labelled with the producer’s name so if you want to talk about the raspberry jam you bought last week to discuss ingredients or

the recipe, you can talk directly to the cook. On a Friday morning, a team from the Market takes their green cloth covered baskets around the local schools and shops both in Tickhill and Bawtry. Tickhill Country Market is from 10.00 to 11.45 each Friday at the Methodist Church School Room, situated at the back of the Methodist Church. Orders can be given for all goods, for special craft commissions, tomato and other plants, to mark Easter and Christmas, weddings and birthdays with a special cake. The Market is always keen to welcome new producers and customers. Please give us a ring on 01302 855379 or 01302 744198

THE DRIVE TO B It’s no secret that car salesmen have developed a less than positive reputation over the years, meaning that finding someone you trust when looking to buy a new car is really important. Started by local businessman, Steve Burrows in 1999, Burrows Toyota remains family-owned and run and is still serving customers from across Yorkshire who first bought cars with Steve and the team in the 90s. If that isn’t testament enough to the superior service on offer, maybe the handful of national awards that we’ve scooped for customer service and technical skills in the last couple of years will provide extra peace of mind.

Your local Burrows Toyota – the original Burrows dealership – may look a lot different than when it opened 17 years ago, but very little has changed in terms of the team’s dedication to high levels of customer service coupled with great value deals on new and used cars. From cost-effective hybrids, including the new Rav4 Hybrid 4x4, and small cars suited for nipping around town to the ever powerful Hilux and practical Proace van, Burrows Toyota Doncaster is not far away and has something to suit every driving need.

Call in today for a complementary tea, coffee or soft drink and find out how we can help.

Positive Progress On 4 May 2016, Her Majesty’s Inspector (HMI), Chris Smith paid his final monitoring visit to Sir Thomas Wharton Community College as a school in ‘Serious Weaknesses’. The HMI letter reports positively about the progress we are making and identifies the growing strengths of the college. It also identifies areas for further development including a drive to support a minority of students to improve their own attitudes towards learning. The Governors and I are pleased with the report and we look forward to the full inspection when we can demonstrate the improvements the college has made. Removal from category will be the first step in our journey and ambition to be an outstanding school. I thank all of you for your continued support. More information can be found in my Blog and the Inspector’s letter, both of which are on our website.

Money Saving Tips be big earners who this is negative for.

By y Mar arti tin n Le Lewi wiss @m @mon oney ey ysa savi ving ng gex expe p rt pe There’s been a furore in Parliament about the scrapping of student grants. And every time politicians get lairy over such issues, the news focuses on the scrap and the real truth of what’s actually happening gets lost. I’ve been swamped with panicked questions about student grants from students, future students, graduates and their parents, so I want to mythbust what’s really happening. In many ways people are panicking unnecessarily about the grant changes, but missing the really damaging change, which is a retrospective hike in student loans 6WXGHQW Č´ QDQFH WKH EDVLFV When you go to university, if you’re a Č´ UVW WLPH 8. XQGHUJUDGXDWH \RX GRQȇW need to pay upfront. The Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees for you and gives you money for living, then you owe it. • You only start repaying when you leave university and, even then, only if you earn over ÂŁ21,000. If you don’t earn over that you don’t repay. • The amount you repay is proportionate to earnings. You repay 9% of everything above ÂŁ21,000 (eg, earn ÂŁ31,000 and, as it’s ÂŁ10,000 above the threshold, you repay ÂŁ900 a year). • If you haven’t cleared what you owe within 30 years, the debt is wiped. • If you never earn over ÂŁ21,000, you never repay. ΖQ PDQ\ ZD\V Č´ QDQFLDOO\ LWȇV D QR ZLQ no fee education. An easy way to think of it is a bit like an extra income tax, ZLWK WKH RQH GLÎ? HUHQFH WKDW RQFH \RX have repaid what you borrowed (plus interest) it stops. For far more help on this, see my full 20 student loan mythbusters guide at www.mse.me/studentloan. I’m going to use examples for English students studying in England. For students from Wales, whether you go to university in Wales or elsewhere in WKH 8. WKH DPRXQW \RX ERUURZ WHQGV to be less, but the way you repay is the same. I’m going to focus on the situation for students who started in or after 2012 LQ (QJODQG IRU HOVHZKHUH LQ WKH 8. the loans tend to be smaller. 72 TICKHILL TODAY

4 6R ZKDWȇV KDSSHQLQJ WR K L student grants? $ 8QWLO QRZ VWXGHQWV IURP ORZHU income families (roughly below ÂŁ43,000 income) had some of their loan replaced by a non-repayable grant for up to ÂŁ3,400. From September 2016 grants are being scrapped in England and Wales. Yet there’s much confusion about this. There are two big things to note: 1) This only applies for new starters starting from 2016. Those already at university and getting grants will keep getting them. 2) This doesn’t mean they’ll have less money coming in. New 2016 starters will get a bigger loan to replace what they would’ve got LQ JUDQWV ΖQ IDFW WKH ORDQ Č´ JXUHV for new starters (not continuing students) have been upped by a chunk. This is useful, as often the big issue that hits students isn’t the size of the loan, it’s that they don’t have enough money to live on day-to-day. Rents alone eat up much of this. 4 ΖVQȇW WKLV OLNHO\ WR UHDOO\ KLW SRRU VWXGHQWV KDUG" A: You may be surprised that I’m going to say no. In many ways the big problem is the confusion and psychological GHWHUUHQW QRW WKH SUDFWLFDO Č´ QDQFHV For most students it makes no SUDFWLFDO GLÎ? HUHQFH 7KH UHSODFHPHQW of a grant with a loan will ONLY cost more for those who leave university and have long-term very high earnings. That’s because if you compare the current and new system, the fact it’s a loan and not a grant would only cost you more if you would’ve repaid your entire tuition fees, remaining maintenance loan after the grant, and interest in the 30 years before the debt wipes anyway. Most students won’t, so there’s no cost to them. In fact, my calculations estimate only those on STARTING salaries of ÂŁ35,000 and up, and WKHQ DERYH LQČľ DWLRQ SD\ ULVHV ZRXOG actually pay more. So if the system remains as it is now, it’s only those from poor backgrounds who go on to

However, the big question is ‘will the system remain unchanged?’ 4 :KDWȇV WKLV UHWURVSHFWLYH KLNH WR student repayments? A: As I explained earlier, since 2012, graduates only repay 9% of what they earn over ÂŁ21,000. The government had said this threshold was due to rise each year from April 2017 in line with average earnings. Yet the Government has now decided WR IUHH]H LW IRU DW OHDVW Č´ YH \HDUV meaning many low- and middleearning graduates will pay thousands more back than they thought they would when they signed up. After all, if we go back to thinking of it like a tax, if you were to pay 9% of everything earned above ÂŁ22,000, but now repay everything above ÂŁ21,000, that’s a hike. It’s received little publicity though, as it doesn’t immediately seem such a big problem. Here I need to declare an interest: I was head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information in 2012 when the system changed. The Government repeatedly told me the threshold would rise, and I, of course, told people, and used it in all my cost calculations. Well I refuse to mis-sell these loans in hindsight. So I am actively campaigning on it – I’ve written an open letter to the Prime Minister and have personally hired lawyers to see if it can be challenged (read it at www.mse.me/studentloanhike). The big problem, even more important than the additional cost, is the message this sends. The Government is not just freezing it going forward, it’s freezing it for everyone who signed up since 2012 HÎ? HFWLYHO\ FKDQJLQJ WKH FRQWUDFW DIWHU people have signed up. The regulator would not allow any commercial lender to change its terms this way. This could destroy any trust current and future generations can KDYH LQ WKH VWXGHQW Č´ QDQFH V\VWHP and perhaps, even more widely, in the political system as a whole. I said above that the impact of replacing grants with loans isn’t actually as bad as many think under the current terms. Yet the real concern is, as the Government has shown it’s willing to change loan terms even after you’ve got them, who knows what may happen in the future.

Local History Society

Tickhill and District Unfortunately your scribe was not able to attend the April meeting when Simon Tomson talked about Lincolnshire medieval life based on the contents of the Luterall Rolls. However from those who were present he gathers that far from being as dry as dust the talk was one of the best we had had this year, very interesting and put over with a great deal of humour. At least one other Society is considering asking Simon to repeat the talk so perhaps all is not lost for me! Thank you Simon for what was obviously a first class evening. By the time you read this there may still be one or two places left on our Summer Outing 74

to Lincoln on June 10th. This promises to be a really good day out so if you have not already booked your place ring Dorothy Bradley on 752429. The coach is nearly full but you may just be lucky. At the time of writing we have one more meeting on May 19th which will be reported on in the July edition of “Tickhill Today”. But after that there are no more meetings until September and the Committee members can take a well earned break - but not for long, the Summer months are quite busy tidying up after this season’s programme, preparing for next season and planning future activities.
