Today

Balby South

Welcome to the very first issue of Balby South Today. This magazine is being delivered to over 2,000 homes in the Balby / Alverley / Woodfield Plantation area of Doncaster in April and will continue to be delivered through your letterbox each month. Today Publications have been producing local community magazines since 2005 and there are 5 other targeted magazines established and serving Tickhill, Bawtry, Rossington, Bessacarr & Cantley and Harworth & Bircotes. We have received many requests over the years to bring this type of magazine to this neighbourhood – so here it is! This magazine is very much for the community and we invite all schools, groups, charities, churches, Scouts, Guides etc. to get in touch if they would like to promote themselves in their local community. Inclusion in our community pages comes free of charge and we hope to grow the number of these community pages issue by issue. So, if you are involved with a local team, group or society and you would like to publicise an event, tell people about your achievements, boost membership or simply increase awareness of what you do I would love to hear from you. The magazine also supports local businesses and tradespeople. We offer highly cost effective, full colour advertising, with prices starting at less than £20 per month, and with the potential to reach

2,000+ local homes each month. To find out more about how your business can be featured in the next issue please do get in touch. Extend that advertising into my other magazines and you could be reaching 28,000 Doncaster homes. I am very pleased to have welcomed so many businesses that are incredibly local to you, to this first issue as well as many more based within very few miles of your home and regularly serving this community. If you contact a business that is advertising with us, please let them know that you saw them in Balby South Today, so that they know their advertising is working for them. This magazine is not part of a large faceless publishing empire – I am a local mum of 3, who works from my family home in Tickhill. I am committed to supporting all things local, and I very much look forward to getting to know more of you, and promoting the events, venues and facilities in the area – and taking that promotion slightly further afield into my other magazines where appropriate. This is your community and your magazine – please do get in touch, with details of what you would like to see within future issues. The closing date for the next issue is Friday 26th April.

Best wishes,

Paula x

We have an excellent written and photographic archive at Loversall and the following information is taken from the minutes of 1919. The items on the programme for the first year included topics such as poultry keeping, toy making, a discussion on venereal disease, bee keeping, fruit bottling, babies and their illnesses, fruit culture and pruning, and the cutting and making up of children’s clothes. Men were invited to those talks that it was thought might interest them. Tea was served at all meetings and the meetings usually ended with some form of entertainment, often games or dancing and singing. There were occasionally competitions such as the 6 best eggs or a hand sewn item such as a camisole. During this first year arrangements were made for dress making classes, dancing lessons and a subscription library was started. A social evening was arranged for both men and women that included entertainment, refreshments and dancing until midnight. Fund raising efforts were launched in order to raise money for a ‘proper Institute club room’, an open air fete held in the grounds of Loversall Hall being one such event. As any member of Loversall WI will tell you we have been raising money for our ‘dear’ hut ever since All in all a very busy first year.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Wonderful news!!

We have reached our target to buy the CT scanner for Doncaster Royal Infirmary! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has donated towards this appeal, to those who fundraised on our behalf and to the organisations who helped us - we couldn't have done it without you all. Our thanks also to our lovely volunteers who always answer our requests for help. Initial work started on the new CT suite at DRI in February which will house two CT scanners and should be operational by early 2020. We will keep you updated. Our new fundraising appeal is for prostate cancer. The NHS states that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men with over 40,000 new cases diagnosed every year. We plan to raise £150,000 to buy a Transperineal Prostate Biopsy machine for the Urology Department at DRI. This machine is critical in effectively diagnosing prostate cancer in men and also plays a crucial role in planning the most appropriate treatment plan for the patient. If you have any fundraising ideas to help buy this desperately needed equipment please do get in touch with us. Don't forget our Mile of Coins will be in

6

T

Frenchgate from Monday 1st April to Saturday 6th April, 10am-3pm each day. All donations will go towards our prostate cancer campaign. LIFESTYLE

Looking back to step forward

Think about the beliefs you hold strongest about yourself, are they actually accurate?

and not yours that you hear.

Often when coaching people I hear sentences such as “someone like me couldn’t do this/that” or other self-limiting beliefs.

You failed to build a business = I can never build a business. Opinion or fact?

They never even began to fulfil their full potential simply because they never saw the point in even starting, after all, they were bound to fail. Commonly it’s a specific event, conversation or experience that lead them to this opinion that they now hold as a fact forever. They were told by someone they trusted they weren’t smart enough, pretty enough or perhaps they themselves attempted a goal and fell short. This negative experience is then taken as an immovable fact. Interestingly, if the negative experience did involve another person, listen to your thoughts, often you may notice it’s their voice

10

Most of the time, it isn’t about what happened to us, it’s how we view what happened to us and what we feel that says about us that counts.

You failed to get in great shape = It’s impossible for me to ever be fit and healthy. Opinion or fact? People will laugh if I try and fail = I can never make another attempt. Opinion or fact? Every outcome in your life will be a result of the actions you take, change your actions to change your results. Of course, it’s not easy. Sometimes we may need to seek help in putting the past events behind us, I’m not in your shoes. But we all have a story to tell, it’d be such a shame if yours was less than it could be at the end of it all simply because you allowed someone or something to dissuade you. Even accepting that you are in the

driving seat and you can create new results in whatever area of your life you choose is very powerful…hope! The World is jam packed full of rags to riches, failure to success and the impossible becoming possible. Why not you? Why not now? Every one of them started as an “ordinary” person. They simply focused on controlling the now, altering their self-perception and letting the results flow. I hope you find some time to reflect on what’s holding you back from what you truly want, you may find a simple answer that you can then do something about. Go create a day and life that counts, always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!

COMMUNITY

Neighbourhood Watch Neighbourhood Watch is the biggest voluntary crime prevention initiative in England and Wales. Based simply on the principle of like-minded residents getting together to ‘keep watch’ of their surroundings. It need not be time consuming, and can be run around your work/home commitments. This makes member communities safer places in which to live, work and play. The scheme receives full Police support, but is run independently. Aims of Neighbourhood Watch • Bring neighbours together to create strong, friendly, active communities where crime and antisocial behavior are less likely to happen • Prevent and reduce crime • Provide reassurance to the community, especially the vulnerable • Provide up to date crime prevention advice • Encourage community members to be alert • Pass timely information to the Police to prevent and detect crime Benefits of Neighbourhood Watch Neighbourhood Watch schemes can make a real difference to people’s lives, and can help people feel safer in their homes, by: • Improving the safety of communities • Developing community spirit • Promoting co-operation between the police and the community • Helping the police detect crime through improved communication and reporting suspicious and criminal activity quickly • Preventing crime and reducing the fear of crime • Encouraging people to watch out for possible problems • Providing a visible sign that members of a community are looking out for each other. • Advice on home and belongings security • Possible reduction on home insurance • Free crime prevention advice

The Dominion DN4 scheme The Dominion DN4 scheme currently has around 40 members, that are striving to strengthen the community and prevent crime being committed on our doorstep. Members of our scheme have agreed to pay £5 per household, per year. This small contribution covers costs of things such as printing and street signs. To join, register your details on www.OurWatch. org.uk by entering your postcode to search for Dominion DN4. Once you’ve registered, if you’d like to keep up to date on Facebook, you can search for the group Dominion DN4 Neighbourhood Watch and request to join. Independent Monitoring Board at

HMP LINDHOLME SEEKS VOLUNTEERS T DONCASTER RAMBLER’S T

Our recent walks have taken us to Howden, Elsecar and Harewood amongst many other places. It is a great way to get out and about and explore local areas as well as those slightly further afield. Rambling isn’t just about walking, the great outdoors, health, wellbeing, and a shared experience, it’s much more. Ramblers are a community, a family if you will, there for one another through life’s ups and downs. In other works by joining Ramblers you’re not just joining a walking group, you’re joining friends.

BREAKING NEWS

Beginning from our summer programme out in April Doncaster Ramblers will be offering, in addition to our normal Tuesday, and Saturday walk, an additional THURSDAY walk of 2 or 2 ½ hours duration in and around the Doncaster area. If you want a try out come and join us, all are welcome. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www. doncasterramblers.org.uk/ walks/walks-programmeprinted-version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found.

HMP Lindholme is close to Hatfield Woodhouse and Doncaster, a Category C training prison, with around 1,000 prisoners. We perform vital roles for Ministers and the public providing an unbiased oversight of the prison. Members are unpaid but claim costs for travel and financial loss. Duties include; monitoring fairness and humanity, the range and adequacy of programmes, taking prisoner applications, raising concerns with the Governor and reporting annually to the Minister. Applicants must be over 18 with a mature outlook on life and live within 30 miles of the prison. We welcome all who are interested and strive to achieve a balanced Board. Applicants must possess the interest and time, about 5 days a month, to make a full contribution, which can include callouts to the prison (at any time) for incidents, so full training is given. IN THE GARDEN

Open Your Garden This month I’m going to talk about The National Garden Scheme. This wonderful initiative gives garden-lovers unique access to more than 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England and Wales. It also raises money for nursing and health charities through admission fees, teas and cake. Beneficiaries include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK and The Queen’s Nursing Institute. By opening your garden to visitors, you’ll give people a great day out, and raise money to help those in need. Even better you’ll connect with a community of like-minded garden-owners, all passionate about their beautiful gardens. Is your garden worth visiting? Do friends and family wax lyrical about your plot? Do neighbours ask for advice and cuttings? Do you sometimes wish you could show other people the result of all your hard work? If you answered yes to these questions, then it’s very likely other people would love to see your garden too.

18

It might seem a somewhat daunting experience but opening your garden to the public can be very enjoyable. Many people get the bug and open their gardens year after year. Most people start by opening once in a year, but many go on to open twice a year, to show off their garden in different seasons. You don’t need a big garden. There are some tiny plots in the NGS. What matters is quality, character and interest. NGS will support you all the way with their network of helpful, friendly volunteers. Initially you’ll be visited by one of the team during the season you feel your garden would look best. And if you don’t feel as though garden is worthy of being part of the scheme, why not visit open gardens in your area to gain inspiration, hints and tips, make new gardening friends, and raise a bit of money for charity. Happy gardening.

ANYONE FOR CROQUET ? T

When English Heritage took over Brodsworth Hall, more than twenty years ago, the Croquet Association asked whether they could set up a Croquet Club to play on the croquet lawns there. Sheila Lines was a Physical Education lecturer at Lady Mabel College at Wentworth Woodhouse, who had recently retired. She and Carolyn Walker, also a PE lecturer, took on the task although they knew nothing about croquet. They visited many croquet clubs and decided the Golf Croquet was an easier game for beginners, who could progress to Association Croquet if they wished. The gardens were overgrown, so the lawns had to be gradually restored to a suitable length, hoops and mallets were acquired, a rule book was written and a meeting at St Mary’s Church Hall was advertised for prospective players. A few people turned up and slowly the club grew. Since then Brodsworth Hall has been conserved and the gardens have been restored to their Victorian glory, now winning many awards. Now the club enjoys playing in the beautiful surroundings on most days when the Hall is open. The original club rules state that whites must be worn and this tradition is continued to enhance the atmosphere. Visitors enjoy the unique experience of watching the games, most people’s knowledge of croquet is from Alice in Wonderland, and so we are always willing to explain how we play. It is a game of skill and tactics, not just hitting balls through hoops. The aim is to get your ball through the hoop before your opponents, while preventing them by blocking or hitting away their balls. Hoops are played in a set order. Four balls are always used. When playing singles two players have two balls each, for doubles four players have one ball each and play in pairs. The first ball through the hoop wins that point and everyone plays on to the next hoop. Club members do not need to be English Heritage members to play at Brodsworth and the annual subscription is not expensive, there are no green fees or extras to pay. We do play friendly matches with other clubs and more competitive matches in the Yorkshire Federation. If you would like to experience playing in the beautiful surroundings of Brodsworth, with friendly people, the club is holding taster mornings on Tuesday 7th and Thursday 23th May. You will be met at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am and taken to the lawns. Equipment and instruction will be provided; all you need are flat shoes. We look forward to seeing you there!

COMMUNITY You live in the Church of England parish of Wadworth, St John the Baptist with Loversall, St Katherines. Living in a particular parish in most circumstances gives you the right to get married at that church, to have your child christened at the church and be buried in the churchyard and you have two beautiful medieval churches to choose from! Your local Vicar is Revd Alun Price and I work with three colleagues, Associate Vicar Revd Liz Strafford, Assistant Curate Revd Angela Teasdale and Lay Preacher Mrs Jane Price. I am also the Vicar in Parish of Balby, St John the Evangelist on Greenfield Lane. The two parishes work very closely together to serve the needs of the area. Contact details are below and we would love to hear from you. We have three weekly services Sunday 9am St John the Baptist Wadworth, Sunday 11am St John the Evangelist Balby and Wednesday 2pm St Katherine, Loversall. A group we call “Thirsty” meets in Balby Church at 7pm. We eat together, pray together, praise together and together learn more about our faith. “Spark”, a similar group for 11-18 year olds meets during term time between 5-6:30pm on Mondays. An informal service for all ages involving crafts, music and different ways of praying and saying sorry meets in Wadworth church at 4pm a few times each month. The next dates are 14 April, Good Friday 19 April, 28 April, 12 May and 26 May. On Saturday 4th May 10-12 we have a family fun morning at Balby church. Through a project called “Given Freely Freely Given” we run a series of “banks” such as food, clothes, toiletries and small

DID YOU KNOW? household items. The project also has three free groups: a “Cups & Cakes” coffee shop on Tuesday 10-12am, “Getting to Know You” Arts and Crafts Group on Thursdays 12:30 – 3pm; and during term time a youth group, “Ignite” on a Friday 7-8:30pm. We run all these at Balby St John the Evangelist on Greenfield Road. We would love to see you at any of the above. If you have any ideas for other events, we would like to hear from you. You may well be reading this as Easter approaches. Easter is a celebration. The preparation for Easter can be used as a pause in our hectic lives. We need pauses in our life. Where would we be without the pause on the remote control? Yet too often we forget to press it in our own lives. When Jesus was sitting in the Garden of Gethsemane he had a moment to pause before the chaos of arrest, trial, torture and execution that follows. The disciples are so paused they fall asleep! Pauses in our life are vital can also be awkward times (as it was for Jesus now as he awaited the pain and humiliation ahead), they can also be great times, times of expectation, anticipation. As we approach the Easter, we must also find time to pause, so we can reflect what is about to happen. If you are anything like me, you will find holy week an intense time, the triumph of Palm Sunday followed by the unfolding of the week as Jesus walks to his date with the cross. Then there is the agony of Holy Saturday as we again pause perhaps the biggest pause in history - as Jesus lies in the tomb, dead, awaiting resurrection. Then the joy of Easter Sunday. It is a week worth savoring and pausing life to find time to breath it all in and ponder what

it means. It is a week in history that we all have to come to terms with, because it frames western society. So please try and make time during holy week to join us and feel the drama unfold, you will grow spiritually, I promise.

Monty Male 8 Years Feb 2019 Possibly No Older

Monty’s owner moved and cruelly left him behind to fend for himself on the streets. Luckily a neighbour recognised him scavenging for a meal in the bins and took him in. She has been taking care of him for a while now but unfortunately has to move and isn’t able to take him with her. Not wanting to leave him behind to a uncertain future, she contacted Mayflower for help. So here he is looking for a new home. Monty is an independent little chap who is very fussy but likes it to be on his own terms. He is happy to come to you for fusses but doesn’t like to be picked up or cuddled. As a former stray he has obviously been outside so would probably be happiest with a secure garden to explore away from busy roads for his safety. We are unsure how he will react to dogs but he certainly wont appreciate living with another cat I’m afraid. Don’t pass him by, call him and I’m sure he will come running out to greet you.

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

COMMUNITY

I’M BEX SHAW and I’m a forty-year-old mum of three. I decided to set up a litterpicking/ environmental group last year called Doncaster Green Team, along with my sister, Kate Marshall and friends Samantha Williams and Samantha Middleton. At the time I was working at a homebrew shop in Balby and used to walk to town a lot to do the banking. I literally couldn’t walk a couple of meters without encountering some form of litter and I started ringing the council to complain. Driving around our county lanes and streets I was also overwhelmed with the amount of litter strewn along the verges and it made me sad and angry to see our town being treated like a bin. The last straw was seeing a pigeon on someone’s roof with a blue carrier bag caught around its leg. In my opinion the council weren’t doing as much as they could to clear the continuing mess so I decided to stop moaning about it and start doing something about it instead, which is why I formed the group. I believe that we should all be responsible for the waste we create and shouldn’t expect the council to clear up everything after us. Anyone living in Doncaster can see for themselves what the litter problem is like and how it is a never-ending task for the council to try and keep clear. My initial idea was to organise one community litterpick a month around different areas of Doncaster, focusing on green spaces such as local parks and woods. I am also very concerned with the way litter impacts on wildlife and chose green spaces to improve for both people and animals. Since then we have also litter picked residential areas, a churchyard and worked in conjunction with The Platform on Woodfield Road. To date we have hosted around 10 community litter picks and cleared around 400 bags of litter in total. We find all sorts of weird items amongst the usual crisp packets, wrappers, plastic bottles and fast food packaging, including a car bonnet, unopened cans of lager, a briefcase and tins of paint. The best turnout we have had so far was our first litterpick on Woodfield Plantation, where around fifty local residents turned out to make a difference. They did an amazing job of clearing the local park and pond, removing around sixty bags of rubbish.

Our group works closely with the Balby Stronger Communities Team from the council and over the last year we have built up a good relationship with them. We can ring or text after a litterpick to arrange collection which is usually that day or the next. They also used to loan us their equipment but since then they have awarded our group with a small grant with which we have bought all our own equipment and insurance. We are also in talks with the council about planting up the grass verges on Balby Road with flowering plants to improve the local area. Last year I became one of 100 ambassadors for Keep Britain Tidy and am soon to become an eco-schools assessor. I hope this will give me the knowledge and confidence to be able to go into local schools and talk to children about the impact litter is having on the environment. I also regularly keep up to date with what other groups are doing up and down the country. It’s really inspiring to see what so many amazing people are doing in the quest to keep their own towns and cities litter free. Some people may think I’m crazy but I really enjoy litterpicking, it’s very therapeutic. It’s great to be out in the fresh air, it’s good exercise and it feels fab when you can see the difference you’ve made to an area once it’s been cleared. If anyone would like to join our group or keep updated with community litterpicks you can find us on Facebook. Dates of future events will also be printed in this magazine.
