Welcome to the July & August 2019 edition

Today

“Some of the best memories are made in flip flops” Kellie Elmore - Author

Previous magazines have been delivered to you mid-month – so this time we have missed mid July and instead attempted to bring this one in line with my other magazines at the very end of the month with content for the month ahead. Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have 10 pairs of tickets for The Festival of Food and Drink taking place at Clumber Park in September. This is a great day out, look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. With 10 pairs available it really is worth a go! The September issue will be delivered to you early in September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Monday 19th August. As always, I will take some time away from desk and my computer screen during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine.

CANCER DETECTION TRUST T By the time you read this the holiday season will be in full swing – let’s hope for good weather for everyone. We are thrilled to say the Midsummer Walk has so far raised £6,406. There is still some outstanding sponsorship money which we hope will eventually bring the total to nearer £7,000. Thank you so much to everyone who took part, their sponsors, Thorne Rural Lions who worked extremely hard and Vizuality who designed and printed all the paperwork.

There is a coffee morning at the Church Hall, Hatfield Woodhouse on Saturday, 3rd August from 10-12 noon where there will be raffle prizes to be won. Proceeds will be donated to DCDT. We will have a stall at Auckley Show on Saturday, 17th August selling scarves, £2 mystery parcels and other goodies. The Show opens at 12 noon with free admission and free parking. Check out their website: auckleyshow.co.uk. There is lots to do and see for all the family including free competitions. Have you seen the displays for the “Happiness Movement” in Frenchgate Centre? They are designed to get people involved in various projects. There is a garden seating area outside Boots on the ground floor and two i-pads in the Centre where the public can send messages as well as make a donation to DCDT. Also we have fundraising packs available with lots of ideas to raise money for us! If you would like a pack to organise an event on our behalf please get in touch with us.

Hello from Mayflower, What a difference a month or two makes, instead of keeping our dogs warm, we are now filling paddling pools to keep them cool. The kennel assistants also hose the kennel runs to keep the dogs nice and cool and chilled, so as you can imagine on top of all the other jobs it is hard work but very necessary. Last time I wrote about Lottie who had the ear operation and is totally deaf, she is now ready for re-homing she is a lovely small short haired Collie type, who is learning hand signals, but is still a little nervous and needs to gain more confidence. If you feel that you are able to help this lovely girl please give us a call. We also have older puppies that are very pretty, but please be aware that are criteria for re-homing puppies is quite strict. However please come along and chat to our kennel staff they will be happy to help you. We have some beautiful kittens here too, again come and speak to us about our adoption procedure for kittens. Some of us did a Doncaster Street collection in July. We had a really great day and thoroughly enjoyed the street artist that was singing on the same street. We happily joined in and also met some lovely people and listened to their stories. Doncaster people are always so generous so a big thank you to everyone that supported us. We had a fantastic Dog Show and raised lots of money at the Pavilion field in Tickhill. It was a beautiful day, thank you to everyone that came to show off their lovely dogs it was such a difficult decision for the judges as every dog has a special something. Thank you to people that baked cakes for the cake stall and kitchen, also to all volunteer that helped on the day, we had such a brilliant turn out. One last thanks to Shaun and Vin who did the BBQ it made a welcome lunch time treat. Please call us if you require any information about our Sanctuary. We have an abundance of beautiful dogs and cats so please if you are looking for a special pet please call for a chat and a look around. Our telephone number is 01302 711330. Have a lovely summer. Best Wishes

Bagpuss Female 18 mth Apr 2019 No No Yes Older

Bagpuss came into our care with her brother due to domestic issues in their previous home. Unfortunately, once here, she decided to bully her sibling and had to be separated. Maybe she prefers to be an only kitty – that way she gets ALL the attention. Bagpuss has lived with young children in her previous home but we have found her to be a little feisty and is therefore not recommended to be rehomed with youngsters. Bagpuss does not like dogs. In her previous home, Bagpuss was mainly a housecat but was allowed outside under strict supervision. She would possibly enjoy a secure garden to explore once she’s thoroughly settled into her new home. If you’re looking for a fussy kitty with a mind of her own and bags of character, then look no further. Here she is !!!!!!

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

Miners Pension Compensation We are successfully claiming compensation for former miners who transferred out of the Mineworkers Pension Scheme. Many miners were advised to transfer their British Coal Pension to a private pension scheme which paid considerably less! This was bad advice and many retired miners or their widows have lost out. Example 1 - £135,000 Mr J. of GREAT HOUGHTON was advised in 1991 by an agent of Sun Life to transfer £25,000 from his mineworkers pension scheme to them. We were able to show this was bad advice and obtained compensation of £135,000.

We are now helping Yorkshire miners and their families TODAY claim the compensation they deserve. See our adverts in the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People.

Example 2 - £100,359 Mr P. of BARNSLEY was advised in 1989 by an agent of Abbey Life to transfer £9300 from his mineworkers pension. He was wrongly advised and Abbey Life paid compensation of £100,359.

With many members from Doncaster and beyond, we organise walks to take place every two weeks on alternate Sundays, visiting a wide range of locations in the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire Moors and coast, the Yorkshire Wolds, Lincolnshire Wolds, the South Pennines, and Staffordshire. Our web-site www. doncasterhframblingclub.org.uk gives a pictorial record of our walks which can be accessed from the drop-down menu under ‘Recent Walks’ and ‘Where We Go’. At each location we offer a choice of three guided walks of varying degrees of distance and difficulty, an example of which can be found in the menu under ‘Next Walk’. We also organise residential visits to more distant areas such as the Lake District, South Derbyshire and Northumberland. We provide transport to all our walk locations by private coach, with members boarding and being dropped off at a number of points in and around Doncaster, listed in the dropdown menu under ‘Booking Walks’. We welcome prospective new members by encouraging them to participate in a couple of walks before asking them to pay our annual membership subscription. However we do ask that they pay the coach fare which is currently set at £10 for the entire journey. To make further enquiries please first contact our Membership Secretary, Maureen Dransfield, on 01-977-704747, e-mail: mdransfield49@gmail. com and then to book a place on a walk telephone our Rambling Secretary, Gavin Barnes on 01-302539316.

CLUMBER PARK’S FESTIVAL OF FOOD AND DRINK 2019 PREPARES A TASTY MENU FOR FOODIES This year’s Festival of Food and Drink, held for the seventh year at Clumber Park on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, is once again preparing a tasty menu of guest chefs, live demonstrations and fantastic food and drink to try and buy. MasterChef: The Professionals 2018 winner Laurence Henry makes his Cookery Theatre debut on Sunday but is no stranger to the area living in Nottingham and having worked for the Michelin starred Restaurant Sat Bains as Sous Chef.

popular Gin School returns with a new twist in the form of the iconic game of Bingo. ‘GINGO’ puts a new twist on Britain’s favourite tipple, as each session give participants the chance to learn more about the nation’s favourite spirit, while wielding their dabbers for a game of bingo. GINGO sessions will be held each day at 12noon, 1.30pm and 3pm, where attendees will receive five gin and tonic tastings, a goodie bag, game of bingo and top prizes for GINGO winners – including bottles of gin.

Vegan chef Brett Cobley, better known as the EpiVegan also appears at the Festival for the first time on Saturday. EpiVegan started life as an Instagram page back in 2016 and grew into a blog, a YouTube channel and then Brett’s first cook book What Vegans Eat.

Gin lovers can take advantage of an ‘early bird’ offer as a limited number of tickets are available until the end of July priced at £12 plus booking fee (£14 + booking free thereafter). Attendees must also purchase a festival ticket for entry into GINGO.

Laurence and Brett will be joined by Rachel Green, the award-winning chef, local food campaigner, food stylist, TV presenter and author who is making a welcome return to Clumber Park.

With 150 mouth-watering producers showcasing their food and drink, The Festival of Food and Drink is the biggest event of its kind in the region. Its festival vibe is enhanced by live music throughout the weekend, with the stage area surrounded by Street Food

TICKHILL & DISTRICT MALE VOICE CHOIR

T

We are always eager to welcome new members, of which we have welcomed a few recently and the choir invites men of any age to come and join us - so do come along and enjoy the camaraderie of singing in a four part choir (Bass, Baritone & two Tenor parts). It has been proven that singing regularly can improve one’s health and wellbeing. All prospective new members are most welcome to attend our rehearsals which are held each Monday evening in the Schoolroom to the rear of the Methodist Church, Northgate, Tickhill from 7.30 to 9.30 pm. Remember, it is not necessary to have the ability to read music or to have any previous experience. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our secretary, Phillip Randall – telephone 01302 743468 or our chairman, Martin Lord – telephone 07588 887771 or just come along to one of our weekly rehearsals. We look forward to seeing you there!! Our Annual Concert, entitled “It’s Showtime” took place on Saturday 1st June at Tickhill Methodist Church. The concert was extremely well attended and we received excellent feedback on the content and the production. The choir sang items from the shows and there was some audience participation, which seemed to go down well. The choir now continues with rehearsals in preparation for the rest of our summer programme. The Tickhill & District Male Voice Choir is available to perform concerts for any occasion – please contact Martin on 07588 887771, all enquiries and bookings would be welcomed.

energy and life when outside, who loves running around the paddock with his favourite toy - he is also partial to a good snooze in his kennel. Prince has been at the Centre for many months and his successful re-homing into a loving home is a priority. Caring for animals like Prince, who are in the Animal Centre through no fault of their own requires considerable funding. With rehabilitation high on the list of priorities for the Branch, time and resources are central to achieving our aim and these need funding. One way RSPCA Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch achieves this is through events that offer supporters a chance to enjoy quality time with friends and family and raise funds to support vital welfare work with animals such as Prince. 2019 has already seen some fantastic events: the Easter Egg Puzzle Hunt was hugely successful and drew in over twice the number of people than it did last year; Big Walkies around the beautiful Thrybergh was a great event, giving folk time to share their love of dogs and dog walking and the Pea ‘n’ Pie Supper and Pub Quiz was a sell-out success, which raised vital funds, and as always our annual Fun Dog Show was a huge success. All of the money raised is used to support the animal welfare work at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre and so far this year over 330 dogs, cats, rabbits and small animals have been successfully rehabilitated and re-homed With even more exciting events coming soon, such as the Zip Line Challenge and Glitter Disco we will be able to support even more animals like Prince, who depend on us for that second chance. So please come and join us at our events. If you would like to meet Prince (or any of our animals), contact the Animal Centre – 01302 719790 or visit rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk
