Welcome to the

Today

August 2019 edition

“Some of the best memories are made in flip flops” Kellie Elmore - Author Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. August can be a slow time for lots of shops and businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday or enjoying a different routine which takes them to other shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the year too)! Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have 10 pairs of tickets for The Festival of Food and Drink taking place at Clumber Park in September. This is a great day out, look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. With 10 pairs available it really is worth a go! The September issue will be delivered to you very late August or for many in the first few days of September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Monday 19th August. As always, I will take some time away from desk and my computer screen during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine.

Best wishes,

FINAL PASTOR’S PAGE T

(for this Pastor)

10 years is a long time

In 2009 Gordon Brown was Prime Minister; since then we’ve had David Cameron, Teresa May and either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt (undecided at time of going to press). In 2009 Matt Smith became Doctor Who; MP’s were exposed for exploiting their expenses entitlements, we were still listening to Wake Up To Wogan, Susan Boyle wowed the country, tax discs had 5 years to go before extinction, the smartphone everyone drooled over was the iPhone3. In 2009 Bawtry had a bank, a post office and professional librarians. In 2009 you were ten years younger and 10 years healthier than you are now. It all seems a long time ago, doesn’t it? In May this year my wife and I decided that 10 years was also a long time in the life of Bawtry Community Church and perhaps it is time for a new pastor to come and carry the work on. We also thought it was the right time for us to face a fresh challenge before retiring, and so this month we are leaving the church and probably Bawtry too. I’ve enjoyed living on the edge of Yorkshire and shall miss various aspects of it, including the BARS sports days, Christmas Eve carol singing on Market Hill, the fact that you’re never more a minute’s

walk away from a cup of coffee, those shops that always give terrific service (my favourite is definitely Timber Joint) – one thing I have really loved about being here is that whenever you walk down the High Street, you almost invariably bump into someone you know and you get to share a smile, a quick chat or even a visit to a café; Bawtry is a friendly place and I shall miss it. While we are leaving Bawtry, we will always carry some very definite memories: it is where our daughter got married; it’s where I had my heart attack; it was while here that I attended my first speed awareness course, and my second; and I’ll never forget the sight of the Vulcan bomber on its farewell flight. In the Bible King David wrote: “The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a delightful inheritance.” (Psalm 16v6). He expressed gratitude to God for where, and when, he lived. He was able to be thankful for where he was, not wishing he was somewhere else but found a full, joyful life with what God had given him, where he had been given it. I pray that you too would be grateful to God for being able to live in Bawtry with all its benefits, at the time that you do, not bemoaning the fact that you don’t live somewhere else; it could be worse – it could be 2009.

JONATHAN STRICKLAND VICAR OF BAWTRY, AUSTERFIELD, MISSON, EVERTON AND MATTERSEY WRITES... T I have been overwhelmed by all the messages of sympathy and good things that people have said about Jackie following her death. Someone suggested that it would be good to remember her in “Bawtry Today” so here goes. Jackie was born in Bishops Stortford but moved to Southampton as a small child, where she spent all her school years. After sixth form Jackie gained a place at Westfield College in North West London to study Mathematics. In 1977 at the beginning of her second year she became a Christian - a decision that set the course for her life in many ways, and from that day on her desire has been to help others find the peace joy, and purpose that she had found. She started to attend Christian Union, and noticed a youth there who she found most unattractive, due to his lack of dress sense which usually included a nylon polo neck, and baggy jeans. However one of Jackie’s skills is to spot potential so somehow we fell in love, and were married on 1st September 1979, and our first home was in Matlock. In January 1982 Andrew was born and Jackie became a mum. In 1984 he was joined by Ruth. Jackie loved being a mum, loved being part of the community and the church and we remember the Matlock years and the friends we made there with great fondness. In 1990 we moved to Cambridge, choosing our house as much for the church it was close to as anything else, as we wanted to be able to invite people to the local church. In 2000 I started vicar training at Ridley Hall in

14

Cambridge and following training I served my curacy in Margate where Jackie truly blossomed. She was appointed as manager of Trinity Resource centre which was a project to transform some tired church halls into a Community Resource centre with a café and the church available as a conference space, whist keeping a lunch club, computer course and language training open. My appointment as vicar here at the beginning of 2007 coincided with the service of celebration for the opening of the completed Trinity Resource Centre, an appropriate moment for Jackie to say goodbye to a job which she had loved. In Bawtry Jackie has been my supporter, administrator and encourager and was forever saying “I’ve had an idea”. She knew she needed another outlet for all that energy and found that initially in the post of business administrator for Misson pre-school. Then she found the finance job at Bawtry Hall and enjoyed working with the team there trying to make improvements so that it could be a viable Christian conference centre. That was not to be and Jackie moved on again, and was looking for a new project. We both wanted to find a way of connecting the church to the people of Bawtry on the High Street so that faith was present there. Jackie had long been fascinated by dress agencies and so in October 2013 Cherish opened. It was Jackie’s passion and ability to work with and encourage volunteers that helped Cherish to be a success in every aspect, spiritually, in the community and financially. Cherish meant that Jackie became a member of Bawtry Retail Association and in that capacity she organised

the market stalls at the Christmas light switch on. After the 2017 event Jackie was exhausted - the first real sign of her illness. As a church member Jackie was a key part of the Messy Church Team and the Open the Book assembly team and was instrumental in developing the idea of Lite Bite - breakfast church. She had an ability to organise anything, anyone and everything with enthusiasm. In all she did, wherever she was, her passion was to spread the good news of Jesus in every possible way. Jackie’s illness has been complex and was unfortunately another of the ways in which she was unique. The hardest part of it has been the roller coaster of hope when one problem was overcome, only to face a new challenge a few months later. All through this time Jackie received excellent care from the NHS and on this journey we have encountered many skilled, compassionate and kind, consultants, doctors, nurses and support workers. I thank them all for their unstinting efforts to help Jackie. Throughout this journey too, Jackie has never doubted that God loved her and continued to hold her in his arms. She desperately wanted to get better and did her best to make that happen, but knew that whatever happened she was safe. Everywhere she went she tried to reflect something of God’s love, in hospital she touched the lives of the patients around her and knew the names of many of the nurses, support workers and doctors. Jackie died very peacefully on 22nd June with us her family around her.

MISSON & SPRINGS WI

T

As you read this, you may well be one of the 224,000 people who have visited a hospital as an outpatient today, or one of the 73,000 who has been to the dentist or one of the 92,000 who has been to an A&E department - and if not, it’s almost certain that you know someone who has! Jeff Jacklin was our guest at our June meeting in Misson and he had a wealth of facts and figures about the NHS at his fingertips. He has spent all his working life in the NHS; and since one in every 23 workers in this country is an NHS employee, the odds are that you also know someone working there. His talk looked at both the serious and humorous side of an institution which is still very highly regarded; as with all good speakers, he was able to engage his audience with poignant reminders of the enormous progress made in medical matters and social life over the last seventy years. There are those of us whose earliest recollection of hospitals was of enforced separation from family and friends who were only allowed to visit for an hour at weekends - and whose more recent experience is of life-saving transplants, heart surgery or knee replacements. And I defy anyone to think about blood donors without at the same time conjuring up the image of Tony Hancock refusing to allow the nurse to take a ‘whole armful’. We look forward to welcoming Jeff for a return visit and a different talk; we can definitely recommend him - if you are looking for a good speaker, he’ll be happy to hear from you at jefftheref2000@yahoo. co.uk. As with previous speakers, Jeff commented on the warm welcome he received and the regular provision of refreshments - why don’t you join us and see for yourself? You will be made most welcome just turn up on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; - or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578 for any further information.

CLUMBER PARK’S FESTIVAL OF FOOD AND DRINK 2019 PREPARES A TASTY MENU FOR FOODIES This year’s Festival of Food and Drink, held for the seventh year at Clumber Park on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 September, is once again preparing a tasty menu of guest chefs, live demonstrations and fantastic food and drink to try and buy. MasterChef: The Professionals 2018 winner Laurence Henry makes his Cookery Theatre debut on Sunday but is no stranger to the area living in Nottingham and having worked for the Michelin starred Restaurant Sat Bains as Sous Chef.

popular Gin School returns with a new twist in the form of the iconic game of Bingo. ‘GINGO’ puts a new twist on Britain’s favourite tipple, as each session give participants the chance to learn more about the nation’s favourite spirit, while wielding their dabbers for a game of bingo. GINGO sessions will be held each day at 12noon, 1.30pm and 3pm, where attendees will receive five gin and tonic tastings, a goodie bag, game of bingo and top prizes for GINGO winners – including bottles of gin.

Vegan chef Brett Cobley, better known as the EpiVegan also appears at the Festival for the first time on Saturday. EpiVegan started life as an Instagram page back in 2016 and grew into a blog, a YouTube channel and then Brett’s first cook book What Vegans Eat.

Gin lovers can take advantage of an ‘early bird’ offer as a limited number of tickets are available until the end of July priced at £12 plus booking fee (£14 + booking free thereafter). Attendees must also purchase a festival ticket for entry into GINGO.

Laurence and Brett will be joined by Rachel Green, the award-winning chef, local food campaigner, food stylist, TV presenter and author who is making a welcome return to Clumber Park.

With 150 mouth-watering producers showcasing their food and drink, The Festival of Food and Drink is the biggest event of its kind in the region. Its festival vibe is enhanced by live music throughout the weekend, with the stage area surrounded by Street Food

vendors and Pop-Up Cafes. Hello from Mayflower, What a difference a month or two makes, instead of keeping our dogs warm, we are now filling paddling pools to keep them cool. The kennel assistants also hose the kennel runs to keep the dogs nice and cool and chilled, so as you can imagine on top of all the other jobs it is hard work but very necessary. Last time I wrote about Lottie who had the ear operation and is totally deaf, she is now ready for re-homing she is a lovely small short haired Collie type, who is learning hand signals, but is still a little nervous and needs to gain more confidence. If you feel that you are able to help this lovely girl please give us a call. We also have older puppies that are very pretty, but please be aware that are criteria for re-homing puppies is quite strict. However please come along and chat to our kennel staff they will be happy to help you. We have some beautiful kittens here too, again come and speak to us about our adoption procedure for kittens. Some of us did a Doncaster Street collection in July. We had a really great day and thoroughly enjoyed the street artist that was singing on the same street. We happily joined in and also met some lovely people and listened to their stories. Doncaster people are always so generous so a big thank you to everyone that supported us. We had a fantastic Dog Show and raised lots of money at the Pavilion field in Tickhill. It was a beautiful day, thank you to everyone that came to show off their lovely dogs it was such a difficult decision for the judges as every dog has a special something. Thank you to people that baked cakes for the cake stall and kitchen, also to all volunteer that helped on the day, we had such a brilliant turn out. One last thanks to Shaun and Vin who did the BBQ it made a welcome lunch time treat. Please call us if you require any information about our Sanctuary. We have an abundance of beautiful dogs and cats so please if you are looking for a special pet please call for a chat and a look around. Our telephone number is 01302 711330. Have a lovely summer. Best Wishes

Bagpuss Female 18 mth Apr 2019 No No Yes Older

Bagpuss came into our care with her brother due to domestic issues in their previous home. Unfortunately, once here, she decided to bully her sibling and had to be separated. Maybe she prefers to be an only kitty – that way she gets ALL the attention. Bagpuss has lived with young children in her previous home but we have found her to be a little feisty and is therefore not recommended to be rehomed with youngsters. Bagpuss does not like dogs. In her previous home, Bagpuss was mainly a housecat but was allowed outside under strict supervision. She would possibly enjoy a secure garden to explore once she’s thoroughly settled into her new home. If you’re looking for a fussy kitty with a mind of her own and bags of character, then look no further. Here she is !!!!!!

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

We have been very fortunate to have had two very different but equally fascinating talks recently. We welcomed

Dennis Ashton - ‘The Star Man’ in May for a talk on astronomy. I can safely say that if I had been taught by a science teacher as inspirational as Dennis my career might have gone in a different direction! (I can safely say that without causing offence as my school days were so long ago). We were told about the life and death of stars, by a former science teacher who has made a career of inspiring people about the skies through presentations at The Science Museum where he was the resident astronomer, talking to children in schools taking a mobile planetarium and at the Yorkshire Sculpture park in addition to being a guest astronomer for the Teletubbies! We learnt about the galaxies, how long light takes to travel over those unimaginable distances and how star light is made up of all colours of the rainbow with the different colours representing different elements. We also heard about how much had been discovered by female scientists who rarely had their work acknowledged- Cecelia Payne in particular who had to go to the United States in order to further her career as a scientist as she would not have been able to pursue a similar path in the UK at that time.

In June we were treated to The Flight of a Thousand Eyes- another inspiring speaker Sheila Dyson told us about her journey in a light aircraft from Nottinghamshire to Australia. Sheila had learnt to fly and decided that this was a challenge she wanted to undertake, and wanted to raise funds for a charity called ‘Orbis’. This charity delivers ophthalmic training to doctors and nurses in developing countries in the worlds only flying eye hospital, contained in a converted D-C 10 airliner. The project aimed to raise enough to pay for one thousand cataract operations at £20 each- hence the Flight of a Thousand Eyes. The logistics of organising such a venture covering 36 legs, 17 countries and 12500 miles over land, sea, mountains, desert, jungle and cities were quite awe inspiring! We were told of the fascinating places, friendly people and receptions they received along with the difficulties of bad weather they had to contend with. In July we are On the Heritage Trail with Rupert Atkinson and although we do not have a meeting in August, we are lucky to have been invited to the Presidents Coffee Morning on 21st August. MISSON ANNUAL VILLAGE SHOW AND SCARECROW FESTIVAL… Hello, my name is Abigail and I am the female club vice-captain of Bircotes swimming club. As a proud member of the club, I would like to share with you a few of our achievements from this past month. As a club, we would like to start off by saying a huge thank you to Tickhill Lions for the kind donation of £300 to buy software, we are extremely grateful for your generosity. We also had our annual general meeting where it was voted the committee will remain the same for the next year. Another event that happened was the Bassetlaw championships. 50 of our swimmers took part and achieved lots of PBs and many medals were taken home. Two swimmers, Lexi and Blake also obtained county times and we are all very proud of them for this achievement. On a Thursday night in June, we had an open water swim at Hatfield Water Park. It was a lovely day which worked in our favour as some of the swimmers didn’t need to wear wetsuits. Some parents even joined in. Everyone had an enjoyable time and said they would love to do it again. Also, congratulations to Malachy and Cillian from a neighbouring club on reaching nationals, everyone is very proud of you both.

REMINDER!

T

Scarecrows will be on display around the village from Friday 6th September onwards so come on, let’s have the biggest scarecrow festival ever! Every household in Misson has recently received a Programme of Events full of information, there is something for everyone in the village show, and plenty of scope for for a scarecrow character…I’ve made mine already! COMMUNITY

BAWTRY RESIDENTS GROUP It was with great sadness that Bawtry lost one of the most active members of our community, Jackie

Strickland the wife of the local vicar was laid to rest. The community turned out in large numbers to attend her funeral earlier this month, we at the BRG wish to send Jonathan and his family our deepest sympathy.

I am saddened to have to report that there appears to be yet again very high levels of criminal activity in and around our town with both residents and retailers being targeted. The latest victim being the Dower House restaurant, the thieves stole the till, the contents of the bar plus two very large brass Elephants. Sadly, it would also appear that the residents of Green Park are being routinely targeted. The Neighbourhood watch team are working very hard and in conjunction with South Yorkshire Police to try to reduce the crime wave in our area. I would urge all reading this to Join the Bawtry Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (NHW) by emailing :- bedford@ btconnect.com. The NHW will be discussing the ongoing problems we are experiencing at the next BRG meeting and an update will be provided in the next issue of this magazine. I am pleased to say what a great day it was at the Memorial Sports Ground (MSG) for the annual sports/ fun day, the team at the MSG lead by Jade

28

Dyer and Kerry Haslam should be applauded for putting on such a great event for the town. The sports/fun day was probably one of the best shows for many a year and could not have happened but for the support of Bawtry Town Council and the Crown Hotel who were the main sponsors of the event. Congratulations to the Pangea football team for winning the 5 aside football competition this year, I am sure that Dee Patel owner of Pangea’s is proud of their achievement. I am very pleased to announce that the BARS representatives assured us at the last meeting of the Bawtry Town Council that the repairs to the Wharf Street play are now taking place. The missing swing has been replaced and the flood lighting has been assessed and should be working in time for the darker evenings. Also, a new floor for the roundabout will be delivered and fitted in the very near future. Things are now starting to take shape regarding the aesthetics of our town, the last Bawtry Town Council meeting gave approval for new flower planters for the Market Hill, new display boards, for Doncaster Road and for Oak Tree Road and the purchase and siting of the new fruit and vegetable stall on Market Hill.

the BRG and the BTC hope that all residents and retailers alike support the retailer operating the new fruit and veg stall for the considerable future. Cllr A. Claypole has informed the BRG that the relocating the War Memorial to the Bawtry library will start at the end of July, all certificate regarding the proposed work will be in place. The BTC are working alongside the Tomlinson family for the replacement of the bench located near the library which was damaged recently. The bench will have a commemorative plaque attached dedicated to the late Lenard Tomlinson. Other news from the recent BTC meeting, it was reported to the Council that many of the older graves in the cemetery (some dating back to the late 1800’s and early 1900 have fallen in to despair and have become overgrown with weeds and small bushes. The Council has agreed to seek quotes for the much-needed tidying up of these graves and I will keep you informed of the progress made.

Richard

It is many years since the Market Hill and the residents of Bawtry have seen a fruit and vegetable stall, the applicants have now been informed of the terms and conditions for the stall. We at

WHO GIVES A HOOT? A Catch Up from Wise Owl T August already, well I never. I'm intrigued by your outdoor activities, Humans. I see brightly coloured chairs and tables and food on small fires. Personally I prefer to hunker down on a branch and enjoy the cool of leaf cover. I have a few favourite branches, as I'm sure you can imagine. At this time of year I like to look at my world, listen, watch and think. Each day now I am thankful for the peace and quiet. Back to normal after all that foul clanking at the drilling site. The sounds I enjoy in the SSSI are the many bird songs - my own Top 40. At no. 1 has to be the larks. But then yesterday I found myself smiling at the long horned cattle munching away at the grasses before lumbering off to explore a new patch, tails swishing, Gentle sounds. The buzzard community grows, I have to admire the way they patrol the sky and ride the thermals. Far more impressive than your aeroplanes and no trail left crisscrossing the sky. From a large species to a tiny one now. Did you know we host the rare unicolour beetle? Yet another Rare Species of National Significance. Found in Sherwood Forest and my doorstep. Love nature. Get yourselves more connected: drop into Idle Valley Nature Reserve and make nature a living growing part of your life, too.

EXHIBITION

at The Hub, Retford T

– 10 AUGUST 14 SEPTEMBER The next artist exhibiting at The Hub is Annie Turner. She writes:

I was inspired from meeting and witnessing the incredible work of Eco Tourism photographers and activists in Sabah, Borneo. They reveal intimate long, (telescopic) night and day shots of animals, never before seen in such close proximity, due to the advancement of camera technology. I could have shown their photographic work, but I wanted to create an even more emotionally charged image through a respect and love of my subject matter. Through this exhibition I aim to create an awareness of an amazing ecosystem on the precipice of extinction whilst also creating a positive opportunity for the public and myself to make a difference and support the people on the ground, making real, lasting change.

How to avoid becoming a FOMO-sapien We have so many options today that it is becoming a daily struggle for most of us to avoid FOMO or FOBO syndromes (Fear Of Missing Out or a Better Option) that captures our culturally embedded belief that we should avoid missing out all costs. But is it really a modern phenomenon? In the Yogic traditions and in many other religious teachings we understand that the human mind has a tendency toward dissatisfaction with “what is so”…. There is always a brighter picture being painted in one’s mind of a better option than being right here, right now! Let’s say you have finally hit the moment of your dream holiday or special occasion, it might not be possible to be truly happy and present because something might still be a little bit wrong or it’s not matching your expectations in some way. In our Gentle Somatic Yoga Classes for Older Adults for the past few weeks we have been exploring this concept and watching our mind’s natural capacity to label and judge the present moment such that we resist what we perceive we dislike and try desperately to cling on to what we believe we love in the fear that if we let go it, nothing else can satisfy us in the same way. Instead in class and out of it, we are practicing choice-less awareness - a kind of open monitoring technique that trains the mind to be with what is so without trying to grasp on to it or fix it our change it in some way. This has had the expected result of helping us focus our attention, become productive and more pleasant to be around since we can now more easily identify the choices we have when we are emotionally triggered, right in that gap where our usual habits would normally take over and react in the moment for us! Since we are all over 40 years in Move and Inspire Me classes we are keen to slow the atrophy that happens in the brain after 21 years which has been proven to show up on the brain scans of experienced meditators. In class we have been discussing the fact that most adults spend around 47% of their day experiencing spontaneous mind wondering mental activity. We have become acutely aware that this takes us away from the present moment into the worrying and planning of future focused brain drain and anxiety or send us deep into the past rehearsing disappointments which serve to generate feelings of despair based on the regret of past experiences. Our resistance of the present moment can be overcome with the daily practice of meditation though with the happy result of dampening our limbic system response (in the

34

stress centre of the brain) such that we freak out less often and experience more calm in daily life. This in turn has supported us to be clear thinking in the face of life shocks and changes (instead of in a panic) and less anxious when faced with perceived dangers but more importantly to notice that dissatisfied mind at work, which is so encouraged by social media activities, advertising, TV and other idealised lifestyle worship. Instead we are practicing bringing the attention and awareness back to the present moment without trying to change it. This explains why you won’t find us on Social media anymore since we are practicing a new art of Digital Minimalism and learning to be content in the now by having the courage to miss out! We did also practice this on a very practical level recently when we turned down the opportunity to go through the third rounds of Britain’s Got Talent (having got through the first two) despite what this may have cost us in terms of building our brand. Of course we invite you to come and make your own positive brain changes with us and join in our Gentle Somatic Yoga Classes (Monday @ 5:15 at Wadworth Village Hall, Friday @ 5:45 at Oldcotes Village Hall). And why not add some positive physical change into the mix with or our fun filled evening Dance Fitness Classes aimed at 40+ (Tuesday 7:15 and Thursday 7:30 at Bawtry New Hall) or our long established and exciting Daytime DanceFit Light Classes aimed to keep you active, fit and supple in retirement (Tuesday 10 at the Guide and Scout Headquarters in Tickhill, and Friday @ 9.30am at Bawtry New Hall). Just call Deborah on 07539600640 to book your place. Deborah Molwuka is an experienced meditator of some 30 years and retired Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology. She is an Advanced Somatic Yoga Practitioner and Specialist in Older Active Adults with a Diploma in Doctors Referral.

COMMUNITY

DEAR FRIENDS, It is with great sadness that we say goodbye this month to our minister Rev Dr Frank Okai Sam after 11 years amongst us. He leaves us

to begin a new life and ministry on the south coast of England with two churches that are part of the South Downs Methodist Circuit. We believe that they are very lucky to have Frank and will be greatly blessed by his presence amongst them. We shall miss him very much. Travel well Frank and may God continue to bless you and your family richly in the years ahead. Sadly, it was time for Frank to leave us. But why now? Why not last year? Stay with us a little longer Frank – why not next? In response to this question, Frank could not say, only that it was time. God had called and Frank (as always) had answered yes. In the bible there is a beautiful poem which you might have heard, it begins; There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: A time to be born and a time to die, A time to plant and a time to uproot, A time to kill and a time to heal, A time to tear down and a time to build, A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to mourn and a time to dance …..

The Book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, verses 1-8

You may know it better, paraphrased in The Seekers 1966 hit ‘Turn, turn, turn.’ Both these versions of the poem speak quite beautifully into situations of unexplainable loss. Drawing our attention away from our little selves, our little needs and our little lives into the context of eternity. For the time that we are speaking of here, is of course, not our time but God’s time. For us, there is never a time to lose someone we love, but we cannot say what God’s purposes might be. All we can know is that on the last day, which will surely come as God has promised, time will be no more and past, present and future will meet in the holy now of heaven and earth completed and one, and we will be re-united, wholly and perfectly with those we have loved and lost. So, God bless you Frank, God planted you for a while in our soil, we have laughed and cried together, mourned and danced, but God has uprooted you to re-plant you in another part of his kingdom. If we do not meet again on earth we will surely meet again in heaven, as ever we might hear you before we see you, but we know that heaven as earth will be a better place for your company. God bless you, each and every one.

Doncaster Rambler’s A local Walk from Tickhill On Thursday 27th June, eleven walkers - Ramblers and guests - enjoyed a lovely 2-hour walk on the footpaths around Tickhill. The morning was dry and warm, a change from recent weather. We set off from the Buttercross and along Tithes Lane to Common Lane and over the motorway and north to Hopyard Lane. Here we were well into the area underwater from 500AD until medieval times, Tickhill Low Common. We then joined the Torne as we turned south, crossing Sheepwash Lane before posing on the bridge over the river and making our way back to Tickhill.

Summer bargains T The local RSPCA Charity Shops are launching their super summer bargains with all four outlets taking advantage of a bumper season of quality donations. The shops at The Courtyard, Bawtry; High Street, Maltby; Field Road, Thorne; and Queen Mary’s Road, Rossington are offering an excellent second-hand range including ladieswear, menswear, children’s and bric-a-brac. Each shop continues to invite quality donations – it is a never ending cycle, or in this case re-cycle. Shop sales help the local RSPCA continue the vital work for animals suffering cruelty and neglect. There are many ways to help us with our mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals including volunteering, donating cash or goods, sponsoring us through our Safe Haven programme and attending our events. We have charity shops at Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne. At the Animal Centre we rehome the animals in our care and have a pet supplies store on site for all your requirements. We also provide a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. To donate £5, text ‘RSPCADRB’ to 70085.

A Summer of Exhibitions and Activities at Retford Hub. T ‘Scrap Saturday’, an all-day event making cards in aid of Bassetlaw Hospice, run by Louise, is on Saturday 10 August, and costs just £5 per person. Amina Khan returns to the Hub to run her ever-popular children’s summer art classes on August 12 & 13, this year to create fish from recycled pop bottles and paint, a really exciting activity. Don’t forget Lego Club on 17 August from 1.30, mostly for the kids but also for young-atheart adults to join in! The Pilgrim Museum is open daily throughout the school holidays, and, as well as displays and exhibits there are activity sheets for the children to enjoy. Find out about our preparations for the 2020 celebrations, including John Harris, our resident artist, who is working on a very exciting project. Seek him out in his studio to discover a professional artist at work. Contact The Hub or John for more information. Friday 2nd August will mark the end of our exhibition ‘Peripheral Vision’ by Garry Ashton, and we will be holding a Summer Soirée from 7pm where you will be able to meet Gary to discover some of the inspiration and stories behind some of the works. In addition, you will be able to meet some of the team behind The Hub and find out more about its future development. Please let us know if you wish to attend, either via the shop or email chris@retfordhub.org. The following week we welcome a new exhibition by Annie Turner, a resident Hub artist. Bawtry Garden Club T

At our July meeting we were treated to an interesting talk ‘all about Hostas’ by Richard Proctor. Richard and his wife Sue, run a thriving specialist Hosta nursery just outside Huddersfield. He told us that customers come from as far away as the Isle of Bute to purchase his plants. The Group had an excellent weekend away at the beginning of July, when we visited Wisley and Kew Gardens. Both Gardens were superb, and the weather was just perfect. Please note, there is no meeting in August. Our next meeting is on Tuesday, 3rd September, at 7 pm, when our talk is about Chocolate, with tasters! Our October talk is about Cammassias. We continue to meet in Bawtry Methodist Church Hall, so please come along as a guest if a particular talk is of interest to you.

Memory Trail:

Carlton in Lindrick: Memory Trail at local Church aimed for people living with dementia, their carers and family. This is the first of its kind in the East Midlands area, though other Trails have been formulated in a few places in the Country. The wording of each section of the Trail has been determined and endorsed by healthcare professionals in the field of mental health and Dementia, designed to encourage tactile and sensory activity. This is a new venture for our Arts Society Dukeries, extending the Societies’ Church Recordings and ‘Trails of Discovery’ aimed for children, adapting and extending these earlier Trails specifically

46

for people with dementia. They are designed to provide enjoyable activity for people living with Dementia when visiting the Church, helping to jog memories, prompting conversation and discussion with carers and family. The Trail has been completed and printed copies have been left in Saint Johns Church Carlton in Lindrick for anyone to use. The Society intends to provide other Trails in other local Churches and buildings of historic interest, informing local Alzheimer’s patients groups as they become available. If you know of a local Church or local historic buildings that could be suitable for such a Memory Trail, please discuss this with us and telephone Gill on 01909 540506.

Support Teenage Mental Health To all the parents who have seen their kids struggle with the pressures of school and adolescence.

child’s ability to ask for help are not always adequate. Fellow students aren’t always supportive either, mental health issues are weird right? Wrong! Mental Health in schools needs to be as normal as having a brace for wonky teeth.

My name is Louise, I am a parent and I am running the Yorkshire Marathon on the 20th October 2019 to support the charity Young Minds Trust.

I’d love to see an increased budget within schools to promote awareness of and normalise mental health among students.

The trust supports children and teenagers who are struggling with Mental Health issues. This challenge has been inspired by my own daughters struggles and the tragic events involving other teenagers in our area. We all remember what it was like being teenagers, it was hard and yes teenagers are generally complicated but sometimes it runs deeper and they need us to recognise that and be equipped to help them and sometimes when they don’t even ask for it. School is the place we send our kids to learn and grow in confidence but it’s not always like that. Instead, for some, it’s a place where you learn to fold your wings in and blend into to background and shrink as individuals. Loneliness, anxiety and depression are an everyday reality for some of our children, sometimes with terrible consequences. In these situations the support and understanding of a well-equipped, fully trained pastoral team is so important. Unfortunately, some schools are not equipped. I and many parents would like know that the pastoral teams within schools are fully trained in the mental health issues that affect our kids and the symptoms that come from these issues, they are very real. Mental health issues can crush a child and take away their ability to ask for help and so pastoral services that rely on the

A marathon will be a struggle for one day, some kids struggle all their school days, that’s why I’m doing this. Please help by giving a £1 or two.

Thank you everyone.

‘’We’re leading the fight for a future where all young minds are supported and empowered, whatever the challenges. We’re here to make sure they get the best possible mental health support and have the resilience to overcome life’s difficulties. The crisis in children and young people’s mental health is real and it is urgent. More children and young people than ever before are reaching out for help with their mental health. But for those who take that brave step, help is much too hard to find. Together, we are changing this. We’re fighting for young people’s mental health. UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

A busy June and July with the Sports Day being a great success for the Town and thank you to everyone involved in organising this for their hard work. As I have learnt since 2015, some concerns that I raise are dealt with immediately – dropped kerbs is a good example; others take a little longer such as having hedges and verges cut and other concerns I have been asking to have rectified for many years, so it was good to make progress on the latter issues this month. As always, I have just picked a few issues to highlight so please get in touch if you want to discuss other concerns. Austerfield Speeding Issues Following the walk and meeting attended by Highways and South Yorkshire Police and residents, DMBC have now sent me their proposals for improving signage and reducing speeding. They have been sent to the Parish Council who were supportive of the proposals – if you would like a copy of the proposals please do contact me.

Future Litter picks – 3 August and 15 August Our litter picks continue to be well attended and new volunteers are always welcome. Please meet at the Hope Centre (next to Pangea) at 10am on 3 August and 7pm on 15 August. If we have lots of volunteers then we will cover various locations across the area so please do let us know if there are particular areas that you would like to see tidied up. Austerfield Litter Pick Thank you to Samantha for organising the last litter pick in Austerfield and to those residents of all ages who attended and did a great job of cleaning up the village. There are plans to have four each year so please look out for flyers and Facebook posts of future dates. Next surgery

Rachael will be at the next Library coffee morning on 9 August from 10am – 12pm so do pop in for a chat. Also Rachael attends the Concerns about the entrance to Sainsbury’s Austerfield Parish Council meeting which is usually the 3rd Monday of every month at 7pm This has been raised by many residents since in the Study Centre. Also from September we the shop opened. As I have reported before, will be holding surgeries on a Saturday morning both myself and the Town Council have been – location is being decided at the moment as asking questions about this so it was good we realise that many people are working so (after many requests) to receive an update weekdays are not a good time to call into the from DMBC’s planning enforcement team about surgery. the proposals that the new developer has for addressing the outstanding planning conditions.
