to the December W elcome edition of BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY Another edition where I have struggled to find enough space to meet demand, but I think I have managed to fit everything in! I can’t believe that I am already producing the December magazine—how this year has flown by. The next edition will be distributed to you over the New Year period. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 9th December. As always December will be a very busy month for me, with all the extra Christmas activities that go hand in hand with having 3 children, so your assistance with ensuring that this deadline is met would be appreciated. Wishing you and your families a very happy Christmas and a peaceful new year.
Best Wishes, Paula

erry (clever) Christmas
I don’t think I’m alone in saying that Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a little overindulgence with our favourite food and drinks. However, you can be merry and clever at the same time to let your belt only slip the one notch:Add protein and/or fibre rich foods to unhealthy ones – Protein and fibre slow the rate at which the body converts excess carbohydrate to fat, giving you a better chance of using the carbs before they’re stored as fat. Beer/Lager – Wine – spirits – Clean spirits- This is the order (most at the left and least at the right) for the number of calories in popular alcoholic drinks. So stay at the right end, try using low calorie mixers and alternating alcoholic drinks with low calorie soft drinks to reduce the number of alcohol calories this year. Five minute rule – Give yourself five minutes before going back for extra/second servings or a desert after a main course. This allows the food you’ve just eaten to reach your stomach and will let you decide if one more mince pie will be enjoyed or reduce you to the settee with a bottle of gaviscon. Go outside – I really feel festive having a venture out on foot over Christmas, seeing children playing with new toys helped by mum and dad and people walking to their family’s all dressed up for Christmas to spread some Christmas spirit. Call me corny, but seeing everyone out and about together, having fun, it really makes me feel great (it also burns a few calories). Give these few things a try, they’re not hard to do, won’t affect your fun and will help keep possible mountains, molehills come New Year’s weight loss resolutions.
Paula’s Challenge
Thank you to everyone who has stopped Paula in the street/playground/ supermarket and commented on how she is doing, and checked her shopping basket! It has been a difficult month for Paula with a weeks holiday, a celebratory weekend at Center Parcs (with 24 members of her pudding loving family) and various other social commitments, and she has been hampered by a sprained ankle that has curtailed her exercise regime. But, she has been heartened by the fact that where she would normally have gained weight during a month like that, she has in fact continued to lose a couple of lbs. Not as many as she would have liked, but she is now determined to step up the pace and ensure that at least another half a stone is gone before Christmas! Visit www.aspire-weightloss.com for a free weight loss pack or contact me on info@aspire-weightloss.com if you have any questions/comments. Richard Matharoo – Aspire weight loss. The 'Ye Olde Bell Travelling Apron' at the Summit of Kilimanjaro again!
The Ye Olde Bell Travelling Apron has been on tour again! Last spotted in Australia with another member of staff, its most recent journey was courtesy of Alastair Moore of Blyth. He is the latest employee sponsored by Ye Olde Bell Hotel, Barnby Moor to climb Kilimanjaro in aid of the charity, Childreach International and be photographed at the summit wearing the infamous staff uniform apron some 5,896 metres above sea level! Taking 5 days to reach the summit of Africa’s highest peak followed by 3 days trek downhill, climbers are exposed to temperatures as low as –25 Celsius using ice picks to reach the top. On the 5th night they are woken at midnight to complete the trek to the summit so they are unable to see the path in front of them, which could be demoralising and also because it is so cold at base camp that it is inadvisable to be inactive for a long period of time making sleep before the summit night not really possible! A recent survey revealed only 40% of the 15,000 who attempt the climb actually succeed! Previously at Oakham and Worksop College, Alastair is studying European Business & French at Liverpool University and currently working at HEC Paris for 11 months as part of his degree.

alling All Carers! Are you a carer? Do you know somebody who is?
In partnership with DMBC, darts (Doncaster Community Arts) are all set to deliver a Carers Rights Day drop-in on Friday 2nd December between 9.00 and 12.00. Carers and cared for are welcome to join artists at The Point for a drink, a chat and some creative activities. Attendees can also access support and advice on caring matters. The drop-in is part of darts’ latest mission: to unearth Doncaster’s hidden carers. Not sure if you’re a carer? A carer is someone who spends a significant proportion of his or her time providing unpaid support to a family member, partner or friend who cannot manage on their own due to frailty, disability, serious illness, mental ill health or substance misuse problems. If that sounds familiar, then darts wants you! In addition to the drop-in at The Point, look out for darts’ poster campaign which is being launched to get the attention of the people of Doncaster and encourage hidden carers to step forward. For more information contact Hayley Beecher on 01302 558054 / hayley@thepoint.org.uk

ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow Lane Bawtry December last year was a nightmare that we have only just about gotten over! The snow made all our dog runs buckle, and it came through the ceiling in the large store room that we had. We can only hope that this year the weather will be kind to us, we would prefer it is the white stuff didn't appear at all! I know it can be great fun but not if you are trying to feed and keep dry 45 dogs and 50 something cats. We have lots of really lovely dogs in at the moment, Spaniels , a 5 month old chocolate Lab , in fact lots of really lovely pedigree dogs and x breeds. The cat/kitten situation is also the same we have the most beautiful kittens and adult cats that just need a lap to curl up on. So please if you are considering looking for a dog or cat please come along and speak to us. We will be happy to discuss anything with you and look to establish which of our dogs would suit your lifestyle. We enjoyed a puppy party last Sunday. All of the puppies that we have re homed over the last couple of months were invited, plus some puppies that just came for the fun. This is a really good way of introducing your puppies to different surroundings and getting used to social play. Everyone had a great time. We recently enjoyed collecting outside Pets at Home in Doncaster. With us came the 5 month old Labrador and a fully grown Lab (which actually is my own dog ). Everyone was so lovely and the puppy had a ball he was so good and really enjoyed all of the attention. While my dog took it all in her stride and wasn't fazed at all. The people of Doncaster are so generous and lots of money was raised. Pets at Home support us and they are kind enough to let us have a corner of the store to display some literature about our cats and dogs. We have some really important collections coming up soon two are street collection in Doncaster 11th Dec and 18th Dec after that we are holding a bag pack in Marks and Spencer on 24th Dec. If anyone is able to help with any of these collections even for a couple of hours it would be very much appreciated. Just give the mobile number a call. We will take lots of dogs with us so come and say hello if you are in the vicinity. We would also like to try and keep our shop in Manton Nr Worksop open 6 days a week but we require more volunteers again if you are interested and have a few hours to spare please call me. We would like to take this opportunity to say special thank you 's to everyone that has supported us throughout the year. Everyone that works at the Sanctuary. The ladies that do a fantastic job in our charity shop. All of the volunteers that work really hard either fund raising, dog walking or volunteer at the Sanctuary. Everyone that sends us warm bedding and food and everyone behind the scene's. Also a special thank you to Rene Farnworth who helps to keep our dogs warm over the cold winter months by making duvet's for their baskets Last but not least thank you to our dedicated team of dog listeners. Without all of these special people our Sanctuary would not be able to survive. May we wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Please call on 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 if you would like to help with any of our fund raisers.

Bawtry Town Council NEWSLETTER
DECEMBER 2011
www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk
Bawtry Library
DMBC Cabinet met and re-affirmed the decision to close 14 libraries, two with effect from the 1st November 2011. However, this decision has been ‘called in’ and is being considered by the Overview & Scrutiny Committee in November before being referred back to the Cabinet at a later date. The Bawtry Group is currently looking to ‘test the water’ on the recruitment of ‘front of house’ volunteers, and also grounds maintenance volunteers. Persons interested should provide their details to the Volunteer Co-ordinator, Mrs Lesley Gilfedder on 01302 711256 or email: lgilfedder06@aol.com. The Business Sub Committee, headed by Michael Maguire, is also working towards a viable Business Plan and possibilities of outside funding from local businesses and other sources. Interim contact for this project is via Mr George Spencer (Chairman-Bawtry Town Council) not the Clerk to the Council. (Details at the end of this newsletter)
School Crossing Patrol – Station Road
Despite efforts locally no-one in Bawtry or Austerfield has come forward to fill the positions on offer by DMBC. Applicants from elsewhere across the borough may be utilised in the interim and hopefully there will be a re-run of an advert for the vacancy in the early part of the new year. Complacency is not the way to deal with this issue and it is hoped that if you wish to have school crossing patrols in Bawtry, then someone will come forward as a matter of urgency to ensure our school children are provided with an important service. The Mayflower School has also requested the help of interested parties and likewise has received no uptake.
Highway Issues
The Town Council continues to support its neighbour Austerfield with regard to an issue at King’s Wood and people with knowledge of the locality should contact Austerfield Parish Council in whose area the wood is located. DMBC has agreed to carry out a disability audit of footpaths in Bawtry, some of which are not ‘disabled friendly’. A response will be received shortly on the audit. Damaged street furniture (i.e. lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc.) should be reported to DMBC for action. Please remember that the Customer Service Centre at Bawtry Library is still the point for you personally to report any matters that concern you to DMBC, the highway authority, or by telephoning Doncaster Council on 736000.
Christmas 2011
It is anticipated that the Christmas tree lights and street lighting columns will be illuminated from around the 27th November 2011. Carols around the tree on the Market Hill will take place as normal at 4pm on Christmas Eve. We have been advised that the traditional tea/coffee & mince pies will not be provided by Bawtry Hall (with a donation from the town council), this year as they are closing early for the Christmas period. Efforts are being made for an alternative provider, but cannot be guaranteed.
Window Dressing Competition
This year’s competition will take place from the 1 st December, with judging on the 21st December 2011. Judging will be carried out as normal by Directors of Excel Parking Services Ltd. As Bawtry traders now have a Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) it is hoped that all businesses in Bawtry will take part. 38 | BAWTRY TODAY
Airport & Tunnel Tech Complaints
Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/ email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so that the complaints can be logged by the appropriate authority. The new contact email for Tunnel Tech complaints is: Amy.Ogden@bassetlaw.gov.uk It is very important that residents lodge their complaints, so that accurate records may be kept by the authorities concerned, for possible future use. Christmas Wishes On behalf of Bawtry Town Council, Members and Clerk, may we take this opportunity to thank you for your support during 2011, and to wish you the very best for the festive season, and hope that you have an enjoyable and safe time.

Puppet Power
Christmas Greetings from Bawtry Hall
We are open right up until the 23rd December and the entrance hall looks fabulous during December when we have the log fire blazing away, the Christmas tree twinkling and carols playing. Why not come along and have coffee and warm mince pie whilst sat by the fire – a welcome retreat from the cold and the busyness of preparing for Christmas! Once again we are offering Morning Coffee and Mince Pies on Thursdays and Fridays from 1st - 23rd December from 10am to 11.30am. We have managed to keep the cost at only £2.95 person too! We do sometimes get large groups coming to this so if you are wanting to have a pre-Christmas coffee morning with your friends please let us know your numbers in advance as we’d hate to run out of mince pies! Our next hugely popular Quiet Day is 13th December. The cost for the day is £25 and includes a delicious home cooked two course Christmas dinner and coffee and mince pies in the afternoon! If you would like to make a booking please give us a call but don’t leave it too long as the places we allocate are going fast. And now th for something completely different! On Sunday 4 December we are pleased to present an: ‘Afternoon with Dean Headland, Pianist & Composer’. The concert is at 2pm and tickets are only £5 and include the cost of refreshments! The concert will take place in our Wesley room. Using our beautiful grand piano Dean will present an afternoon of his delightful music. There will be an interval for you to enjoy a cup of tea and a mince pie whilst enjoying the ambience of the entrance hall with the Christmas Tree and log fire. Remember to take a look at our website: www.bawtryhall.com and that you can follow us on: twitter.com/bawtryhall or facebook.com/bawtryhall You can always visit us and buy your Christian cards and gifts in our shop – you are always sure of a warm welcome and we would love to see you AND our Christmas cards are in stock and likely to sell fast!
