to the February W elcome edition of BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY I was struggling for inspiration of what to write this month, in this little introduction to the magazine, so I invited suggestions via Facebook! I was inundated with responses some sensible, some not! Ideas for themes included Valentines Day, snowdrops and spring flowers, leap year and the breaking of Resolutions. Someone even sent me a little ditty that I thought I would share with you. Roses are Red, Using local is clever, this edition of Bawtry Today, is the best one ever! The next edition will be distributed to you from 25th February. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 10th February.

NO GOING BACK NOW!! A staggering ninety four percent of Britons break their New Year’s resolution within three weeks of making it, strangely enough the same amount of time it takes to form a habit! So, whilst many of us are renouncing our lack of willpower, one local man has committed to the challenge of a lifetime – UK End2End 26th May - 5th June – a cycle event from Land’s End to John O’Groats covering 1000miles in just 9 days! “I always break my New Year’s resolutions and decided that this year not only was I going to keep it I was going to set myself an amazing challenge,” said James Jones marketing director Robinsons of Bawtry and member of Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club. “I am raising money for Action Medical Research and also our local Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice as I have witnessed what an amazing place this is for children and their families.” “Last time I rode my bike I fell off and ended up in A&E so I am under no illusion as to what a monumental effort this is going to be,” said James. “With the help of Luke Walker from Bawtry Health and Fitness who will help me achieve the required level of fitness, and Helen Thomson from Bawtry Natural Health who will ensure I am suitably healthy, I am confident that this is going to be a great experience.” James is also planning to support other fitness challenges in the ‘Bawtry Olympic Challenge 2012’ which see five events taking place throughout the year offering varying levels of challenge either on foot, in the water or on two wheels. It is hoped that as many Bawtry residents and businesses as possible will join in to raise funds for a host of worthwhile charities. Further details can be found by visiting www.bawtryhealthandfitness.co.uk To donate to Bluebell Wood Children's Hospice http://www.justgiving.com/jj-end-2-end To donate to Action Medical Research http://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/jamesj People can also donate to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by texting the following: 'JJEE67 £2' to 70070 'JJEE67 £5' to 70070 'JJEE67 £10' to 70070 All funds from text go directly to Bluebell Wood, there are no charges or fees, service provided by Vodafone - JustTextGiving. ickhill & District Lions We’ve got a lot of people to thank this month. Firstly we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 13th of December. To the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we helped Santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. Santa’s reindeer won’t have gone hungry on Christmas Eve as children of all ages sprinkled magic reindeer food to guide Rudolph and his friends to their home. So thank you to all of you who supported us by purchasing Reindeer food, and again a big thank you to all of the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the food. And of course a big thank you to the many, many more people who have supported us at our fundraising events throughout 2011. At Tickhill & District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you’ve given will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So thank you once again from Tickhill & District Lions and from all of the people that your donations will help!

A Great New Event for 2012

Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields. The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield. Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and families, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate. Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said “We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous, we had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone”. Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.“ The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years “We have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill exactly. The run appeals to the new jogger as well as the seasoned athlete and it’s great that it is in a place as accessible as Doncaster”. Entry to the event is £18 for UKA Members and £20 for standard entry. Fun Run entries cost £8. Online registration for both the Run Doncaster 10k and the Community Challenge Fun Run is available NOW at www.metrestomiles.co.uk 10 | BAWTRY TODAY

Pastor’s Page

So, how’s it’s going so far? I mean your determination to get fit/ lose weight/ stop smoking/ walk the dog every day/ whatever your New Year’s resolution was. I am pretty certain that I have now discouraged you.; you started with such good intentions, managing to resist the temptation for a few days but something happened; you couldn’t refuse someone’s hospitality, someone mocked you, it was raining, you forgot – perhaps you have a perfectly valid reason, but probably not. So here you are; it’s only February and you’ll feeling pretty pathetic already. The good news is you’re not alone – we all let ourselves down more than we let others down. You probably know the horse-rider’s philosophy; “if you fall off a horse, get right back on” and yet we so often just stay down in the dirt. So, if you have broken your resolution – I urge you not to give up but to start again. As a teacher of mine once told the class while puffing on his pipe (it was a long time ago); “Giving up smoking’s easy – I’ve done it loads of times”. One Biblical teaching that never ceases to amaze me is that no matter how often we fail or sin, God is always willing to forgive us and give us another chance. Think about Peter – he really, really messed up when he denied ever knowing Jesus, all the worse for just a couple of hours earlier proclaiming that he was willing to follow Christ to the death. How did Jesus react? He sought Peter out, told him he was forgiven and then gave him the heavy responsibility of looking after the other disciples. Jesus could only tell us to forgive our brother 70x7 times because God s willing to forgive us that often. So this February, stop berating yourself and feeling so weak; get up, get back on that horse and try again. Be that to go to the gym, to pray each morning, to resist that temptation (you know, that temptation that you so easily succumb to) or to look in the mirror and remind yourself “God really does love me”. Simon Carter Pastor, Bawtry Evangelical Free Church.

Keep your pet healthy and happy this winter Despite their fur, pets can feel the cold just the same as humans do and freezing temperatures can create problems if you’re not prepared for winter. Here are some ‘Winter watch outs’ and handy tips on how to make sure your pet is happy and healthy during the chilly winter months: · Try not to walk your dog on ice, your pet can slip as easily as you do! · Don’t let your pet eat snow – you don’t know what it’s hiding and it can also cause hypothermia. · Pets are attracted to the taste and smell of antifreeze but it’s poisonous so keep it stored out of reach. · Make sure your pet stays warm. Give outdoor pets like rabbits an extra layer of bedding and consider moving them inside · If your pet has outside water bowl, make sure it is de-iced regularly. If you would like any more advice about caring for your pet during Winter, call us on 01302 556 868 or visit www.vets4pets.com

Happy New Year from Bawtry Hall! After a really busy time up to Christmas it is quiet in the Hall but this gives us time for some amazing refurbishments! Work has commenced on our “Bee Hive” project and the contractors are making good progress. The refurbishment of the Entrance Hall area begins in a couple of weeks too so all in all a very exciting time here. Elis, who came to Bawtry Hall from Brazil for her second time as a volunteer and is a much loved and valued member of staff, is leaving us at the end of January to attend Bible College in Hungary. We now have the programme of dates for this year’s Quiet Days and the first one is on 13th March. The cost is £23 including lunch. If you feel like some much needed ‘space’ after the spring cleaning why not come along? You also get to see the refurbished entrance hall for yourself! Give Emma a call on 01302 710020 to book your place. Please call us to find out how we could be the perfect place for your special day. Highway Issues Damaged street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc) should be reported to DMBC for action.
