Come and see our Welcome to

the FEBRUARY 2015 edition

Last time I wrote my introductionthere were still 2 weeks to go until Christmas, which now seems like months ago. I did of course, despite my concerns, manage to get done everything that needed to be done before Christmas. Much of my January seems to have been spent considering different kitchens, thinking about layouts, assessing different appliances and explaining our plans to various builders, electricians and kitchen designers. It is approaching 10 years since we moved into our current house, (which is the longest I have ever lived anywhere) and I have been thinking I would like a new kitchen for most of that time. Hopefully 2015 will be the year that I make that happen, but at my current rate of decision making, maybe not! Please come and say hello if you are visiting the Business Showcase at Doncaster Racecourse on Thursday 26th February. It is free to attend and there are over 200 exhibitors of which Today Publications will be one of them! A great place to meet new contacts, suppliers and service providers, for anyone in business or who is considering starting a business.

Bawtry Theatre’s next play is ‘Steel Magnolias’ The play ‘Steel Magnolias’ is the next production at Bawtry theatre running for seven nights from Saturday February 28th to Saturday March 7th 2015.

As you read our ode for February 2015 the first month of 2015 will almost have passed us by! But, whilst many of us have been vowing to get fit, give up things and achieve some personal goals, we’ve been busy planning some great events for 2015. First up is “Wear It. Beat It. ’ day which takes place on Friday 6th February – the annual fundraising day for British Heart Foundation where they ask for everyone to dress up in red. Several Bawtry Retail Association members including Yorkshire Caravans, Six IT Services and The Body Buddy at Bawtry Gym have signed up and are all doing their bit to raise vital funds.

The play is set in a beauty salon in a small Louisiana town and features the lives of six women over a period of two years. Truvy runs the salon along with Annelle, the newly appointed teenage girl who loses a husband at the beginning and finds religion and a new husband by the end. Their regular customers include M’Lynn and her beautiful, newly married daughter Shelby, Clairee, the rich former mayoress and Ouiser, who has been in a bad mood for the last twenty years. Funny and, at times, tear jerkingly touching, the audience listens in on the gossip and banter of these ladies as they deal with marriage, birth and tragic death and ultimately offer support and comfort. Tickets priced at £8 and £7 concessions will be available from the Spa shop on Station Road,Bawtry from February 3rd. T

Staying with the heart theme, several retailers will also be on hand to ensure you make the 14th February a day to remember for your Valentine! Whether you’re looking for a special gift or a great venue for a romantic meal, there is sure to be something in Bawtry to suit. Just a few days later on the 19th February China Rose restaurant will be bringing in the Chinese New Year (the year of the Sheep) to a sell out crowd. It’s promising to be a superb night and remember if you were born in the year of the sheep – this year could be your year! Plans are well underway for the third Bawtry Fashion Week which is to be held between 8th and 15th March. We don’t want to tell you too much just yet but rest assured that there will be plenty of events and promotions once again. Who needs London or Paris when you’ve got Bawtry?! And finally, congratulations go to Clare Blaylock at Bawtry Flowers who won the ’12 Feasts of Christmas’ Raffle. Sincere thanks go to all retailers and businesses who kindly donated some amazing gifts. Don’t forget that you can find out lots of information from our website www.visitbawtry. com, follow us on Twitter @visitbawtry and like us on Facebook /visitbawtry. T 14

A whole host of different fundraising activities and events are being planned for the year ahead to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in North Anston. The charity has to raise over £3m to provide its specialist support for children with life limiting and life shortening conditions, and their families – both in the hospice and in the community. The fundraising events provide something for everyone; whether you’re a runner, like cycling or would like to go to a ladies lunch. Bluebell Wood has reserved 100 discounted places for the brand new Yorkshire half marathon in Sheffield in April and the charity is gearing up to hold its first ever ‘Dambuster’ road cycle challenge event in June. You can join Bluebell Wood for a ladies lunch at the Sitwell Arms, Renishaw, in March or the whole family can embark on a treasure hunt at a cute Fairytale Trail in April. February is also Make a Will month. Bluebell Wood has partnered with seven solicitors, who during February when ‘Bluebell Wood’ is mentioned will give a donation to the charity. Details of solicitors can be found at www.bluebellwood.org/makeawill Bluebell Wood is also on the lookout for community volunteers, to help at events or with fundraising in their area. The friendly team are all focused upon helping to raise vital funds for the hospice in different and exiting ways. Volunteer fundraisers are matched to their roles and can completely tailor their hours around the time they are able to give. So, whether you have two hours spare or two days, our fundraisers would love to hear from you. For more details about events and our fundraising opportunities, visit www.bluebellwood.org or call the fundraising team on 01909 517365. T

community Hello everyone, we are at last utilising our new reception building, it is so good to be able to chat to people about their requirements in a warm up to date building on these cold and wintry days. Not only do we have a fabulous new reception area but our dogs have also benefited too. We were able to upgrade some of our kennels that house smaller dogs and have also made room for a socialising area. We still have future plans but for the time being we must concentrate on paying vets bills and taking care of the animals in our care. We are all very grateful that a supporter remembered us in his Will, however it was stipulated that the money could not be used for running costs and needed to be used for a project. He was very much aware that we needed more space to educate, socialise our dogs and much, much more, this building will have indeed a variety of uses. So thank you so much Councillor Granger. One small dog that we have in our care at the moment is a Jack Russell called Daisy. She is a sweet little girl and just wants a quiet life. When she came to us she had a really bad skin condition (and not very much fur on her body ) but as the weeks have gone by she is getting a little better every day. With regular baths and treatment she should be ready to rehome any time now. Daisy is 8 years old and very loving. If you feel that you could give her a home and either foster or adopt her please let us know, At the moment she is living in the office at the Sanctuary with her bed right under the radiator snuggling in with her soft toys and blankets. It would be wonderful to be able to arrange a home for her in the not too distant future.

Finding a forever home As a charity we rely heavily on public donations and would not be able to survive without your help. Our vets bills are over ÂŁ40,000 per year and this figure increases every year. We would like to be here for the future but need your help to survive. A big thank you to everyone that donated dinners for our dogs and cats, also treats and food over the Christmas period. Sat 21st February We would like to invite you to join us at our psychic evening on Sat 21st February taking place at Mayflower Sanctuary. The price is ÂŁ7.50 and will include pie and pea supper. 28th March We will be holding a Table Top sale in the Scout Head Quarters Tickhill. If you wish to reserve a table please call Margaret on 07969203206 these will be charged at 10 pounds. Light refreshments will be available to purchase, and a small fee of 50p will be charged for entry. If you feel that you can help our Sanctuary in any way please call 01302 711330 please leave a message and someone will call you back . Please come to see the work do, if you have time join out walkers on a Tuesday and make new friends too. We will look forward to seeing you soon.

Name: Tilly Sex: Female Nov 2014 Date into care: Age: 2 Years Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: No Lived with children: Yes Hi. My name is Tilly and I came to Mayflower because my previous owner had a new baby and was worried that I would harm it I thought that I was their baby!!!!. I don’t know what I was doing wrong. I was only trying to look. It smelt so different and made these strange noises. I have previously been a housecat so found it difficult to settle here at first. My carer says that Im not very good with other cats because I haven’t met any before I came here and Im scared of them. Im getting better but I prefer human friends the best. Could I be your best friend?

Best suited to a home with experienced dog owners and people that will have plenty of time for me and in a one animal household. I travel well and have lived with teenagers

Misson & Springs WI 2015 is well established and here at Misson & Springs WI we are looking forward to another year of interesting and entertaining meetings and activities. One of the original aims of the WI movement was to educate women and we are sure that we always learn something new at our meetings. Whether we remember it or not, is another matter! We anticipate finding out some very interesting facts at our meeting on Wednesday 25th February, when we shall welcome David Templeman, who will talk to us about Two Queens and a Countess, the relationships between Queen Elizabeth I, Mary, Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick. We renewed our subscriptions in January, but there is always time to join us, either as a member or a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be made very welcome. We always make sure that we have time for a chat and our excellent catering team provides an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T

Friends of Cast It is over a year since the new multi-space performance venue opened in the centre of Doncaster. Cast, situated on Sir Nigel Gresley Square, has seen large audiences enjoy a wide and varied programme of music, theatre, dance and family entertainment. Anyone who was lucky enough to attend the recent pantomime will know what a welcoming place Cast is, great for families but also providing opportunities to attend high quality live performances for people of every age and interest. Cast is above all a friendly place. In recent weeks, a small group of regular audience members have been meeting with the idea of setting up a formal Friends Organisation to support Cast as it develops and simply enjoy being more involved with the venue. We would now like to invite people from across Doncaster and further afield to join with us and develop this idea further. If you’d like to join this new group, meet new friends or perhaps be involved in the organisation of this new group, we’d love to hear from you. Membership is open to anyone 18 or over and is free, although a small administrative charge will be required to pay for postage and administration. If you’d like to know more and how you can be a ‘Founder Friend’ contact me, Dave Adgar on 07733 108553 dadgar@thecct.org.uk T

‘Follow the Star’ with Mattersey Primary On the build up to our ‘It’s a Nativity’ performance on Wednesday 17th December, we all went for a walk around the village of Mattersey, on the hunt for the ‘Star of Bethlehem’. It was wonderful how members of the local community engaged with our journey and played along with the nativity storyline – some people even dressed up as the Shepherds and an Innkeeper! A huge thank you to Mrs M Brogden, Victoria Brogden, the Post Office staff, the staff and Students at Mattersey Hall, Mr & Mrs Digby, Mrs Ridgill, Mrs Rowley and Mrs Fullwood, who all played along by helping us find clues on our special journey or who came out to see what we were up to. Along the way, we collected a ‘lamb’, gold, frankinsence and myrrh, ending up at the stable where we found the star above a manger, ready for the baby Jesus to be born. We were made to feel very welcome by the friendly innkeeper, who although not having any rooms, was able to give us Bethlehem cocoa and biscuits. Charity Events On Friday 12th December, we held our Christmas Jumper day in aid of ‘Save the Children’. Staff, children and parents all supported this event by wearing a Christmas jumper for the day. It was great to see so many home-made creations – we obviously have some very talented and creative people out there! The children designed a Christmas jumper for Mr Fletcher to wear and he loved it! Well done to everyone who took part and who helped us to raise money for this very worthy cause. We also supported the Samaritan’s Purse appeal and were able to send 32 filled shoebox gifts to children around the world who would not otherwise receive a gift this Christmas. A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible. It’s a Nativity

Make a Property

TRUST WILL

to ensure your children inherit Knowing your children will inherit your assets after you have gone is something that probably gives you great comfort. But the uncomfortable truth is that unless you have the right type of will, nearly everything you think your children will inherit could easily go in care home fees for the surviving partner. Many couples make a ‘Mirror Will’ which leaves everything to the surviving partner and then to their children, not realising that if the surviving partner needs residential care, he or she will have to use all their assets to pay for this until they have £14,250 left. Property Trust Wills are the best way of ensuring that your children inherit everything that you

intended them to. Instead of leaving everything to each other, this type of will enables you and your partner to each leave your personal share of your home to your children in trust, with the condition that the children cannot have their share while the surviving partner is still alive. The surviving partner is still able to sell their share of the home or move house but the share left in trust to the children cannot be included in any means test calculations, which means it cannot be used to pay care home fees. Property Trust Wills are only suitable for couples in good mental health and cannot be used by single people or a surviving partner who now owns the property outright. Jones and Co is probably Bawtry’s best known firm of solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. Methodist Minister Dear Friends,

Many of us remember the month of February for the obvious reason of Valentine’s Day. It is the day that many people in the world celebrate love. Wonder how many of us really mean it when we tell people whom we know that we love them. There is a story of a young man who was speaking on the phone with his fiancé. As he was ending the conversation, he said to her, “I love you”. Then he concluded, “I’ll see you tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain”. I wonder what kind of love depends on the weather? Tuesday 17th February There is another story (in the bible) of a young boy who gave his lunch of 5 loaves of bread and 2 fishes to Jesus and his disciples to be used to feed a multitude of people. This boy teaches us that love is all about sacrificing our most valuable resources (including time) for the benefit of others. The greatest example of love is our generous God who gave his only Son to the world in order to save it from sin (John 3: 16). He gave in order to restore the world and our relationship with him. God takes tiny things in our lives and multiply them for the benefit of others. As we reflect on ‘love’ in the month of February, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to invite people living in Tickhill and its environs to a session on ‘the love of God’ at Tickhill Methodist Church on Valentine’s Day, Saturday 14th February 2015, at 2.30 p.m. It is a form of gathering, which some people call “Messy Church”. The label describes what it is – messy. It involves games, art and craft, food and a talk. Anyone of any age and gender is welcome because every activity appeals to everybody. It’s basically having fun for a couple of hours with the family in a chapel every second Saturday of the month. I wonder if you can give it a try this month. Back to the issue of God’s love, a small gift can go a long way in God’s economy. No wonder Tesco has its motto, ‘every little helps’. I wonder if I can chip in to inform readers who live in Rossington and its environs that the Foodbank is opening a satellite centre at the Baptist Church at the Holmescarr Community Centre soon. Watch out for more information from your local news centres. This month, I wonder if I can use this opportunity to ask you to review your giving by giving generously to those who are in need of food and other resources. For those of you, who are also hungry for more of God in your life this year, be reminded that you can turn to Jesus who is the bread of live. He knows you already and is yearning to have a great relationship with you. Bring your stretching situation to him now for he is ready to listen. Happy Valentine’s Day greetings. My prayer for you, your family and friends is that this year, God’s blessings will abound in your lives. Yours’ sincerely, Rev. Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister for Adwick-le-Street, Auckley, Bawtry, Harworth, Rossington, Sprotbrough, Sprotbrough Road and Tickhill Tel. 01302857952 • E-mail: frank.okai-sam@methodist.org.uk T

Bawtry Town Council - FEBRUARY 2015

Crime in Bawtry Criminal damage to other property x 1, Burglary dwelling x 1. Anti-social Behaviour – 1 x parking complaint.

Christmas Carol Service The Town Council’s traditional Christmas Eve Carol service around the tree was attended by more people than ever on a dry, but cold, evening. The event was clearly enjoyed by all and our thanks go to Bawtry Churches Together, Excel Parking Ltd, Gary Lingard who erected the marquee and in particular to the staff from the Timber Joint who worked very hard to put up the clear lights so the Band could see the music. The Town Council paid for the Hatfield Brass Band who performed very well as usual. Very grateful thanks go to Councillor Alex Calzini and his staff at Ziniz for providing mince pies and hot drinks free of charge to many grateful singers. The Boxing Day Hunt at the Crown Hotel, was attended 40

by an increased number of onlookers and was a fine spectacle. Consent was given by Excel Parking Services Ltd, and agreed by the town council to suspend parking charges for the morning. Our thanks go to Excel Parking Services Ltd and South Yorkshire Police for ensuring the safety of all concerned.

Neighbourhood Plans Along with some other town/ parish councils, Bawtry is considering producing a Neighbourhood Plan in conjunction with the Bawtry Residents’ Group. This could, potentially, give the local community greater control over local planning issues. Views are sought from Bawtry residents on such a Plan and whether or not individuals would like to be involved in its preparation. Anyone wishing to become involved can contact the Bawtry Residents’ Group or the town council.

War Memorial The council has, for some time, been investigating the possibility of re-siting the War Memorial from its present position on the Great North Road to a more suitable and safer position within Bawtry. Views are sought from interested residents as to possible locations. Please contact the clerk or any member of the town council.

Happy Travels A spare hour spent looking through the website of the Office of National Statistics uncovered this piece of information: About 59 million trips abroad are made per year by UK residents. That’s about 1 trip per year for each of us. In broad average terms, that means we each go abroad about 80 times in our lives. With all this foreign travel, you might expect us to be very cosmopolitan; having a love for different cultures and a keenness to learn a foreign language – Spanish would be sensible, given that Spain is by far and away the most popular destination (11 million visits per year), and 19 other countries also use Spanish as their national language. But we British know we aren’t good language learners. When I worked in Kenya (national language – English, phew) some of my contemporaries had little formal education, yet spoke eight different languages. Eight. So why don’t we speak more Spanish, or French, or Mandarin? Is it a leftover from the days of empire when we expected/ demanded that everyone else speak English? Is it because we are shy and unwilling to feel a bit silly (as I did when told that a three year spoke better than me while learning Spanish)? Is it because, despite our keenness to travel, we aren’t actually that interested in different lands and cultures? Do we actually go abroad just for the sunshine and cheap wine? Few of us would admit to this latter motive, thinking ourselves

Everton Village Players

THE ALLOTMENT and NOT BOBBY Everton Village Players present two contrasting one-act plays, “The Allotment”, a drama by Gillian Plowman, and “Not Bobby” a comedy by Nick Warburton as their February production. In The Allotment directed by David Larder we see four women in a state of crisis carrying out punishment orders in a community allotment for crimes they have committed in the past. Totally deluded and in a state of denial they create a life of fantasy giving comfort and support to each other in their own way. But when a new probation officer arrives their past catches up with them, as she also faces a traumatic event from her own background. David Larder’s award winning 42

as cultured and not as mere tourists, preferring to be called travellers. The word “traveller” makes you think of history, culture, art and learning. Whereas “tourist” conjures up an image of drunken foolishness or haggling over plastic tat at a faux traditional market. It’s a cliché but true; life is not a destination but a road that we travel along. This year, as I interact with cultures not my own and with the God I have found in the Bible, I hope I can be a traveller and not just a tourist. I want to be learning, stretched and marvelled by what I come across; not just gawking superficially as I rush on to the next place. I hope you have a terrific journey this year. Make sure you take a Lonely Planet guide* in one hand and the Bible in the other and you too will be a true traveller, not just another tourist.

Simon Carter Bawtry Evangelical Church * Other guides are available but Lonely Planet guides are by far the biggest sellers, and very helpful for travellers; other guides are better suited to tourists. T

interpretation of this dramatic tale will in turn make you laugh and cry. Not Bobby, directed by Mollie Hall, is a quirky satirical look at the education system. Anxious to complete yesterday’s newspaper crossword, Frank finds the page missing. His mother Pam has used it to line the rabbit cage. But Frank is astonished to find that it has been completed. Could Bobby the rabbit be responsible? Matters taken on a touch of the absurd when the Education Authorities assess Bobby and place him in the top infants. The Allotment and Not Bobby will be performed from 18th to 21st February 2015. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01777 817275 or the website at www.evertonvillageplayers.co.uk T

TICKHILL AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

Tickhill Music Society

We have enjoyed a busy and very successful Christmas period including more than two weeks of escorting Santa around the local area. With the weather in our favour large numbers of children and adults turned out to enjoy seeing Santa and chatting to him or one of his helpers. Many youngsters left letters advising him that they had been very good and telling him what they would like for Christmas. Our sincere thanks for the generous donations made by so many local residents and children. Many thanks also to the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Grand Jeep Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh round in fine style.

Rhys Matthews (percussion) and Tim Abel (piano) Xylophones, marimbas, African drums and hand percussion to brighten up a winter's evening!

Thanks are also due to the many local businesses which donated prizes for our Grand Christmas Draw held at the Carpenter’s Arms in Tickhill on Tuesday 16th December. In all there were 72 prizes in the draw. The willing support of local businesses means a lot to us all. With chocolate Easter Eggs already ordered we will have time during January and February to consider where we can provide financial support for worthy causes and projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. Back in the Autumn we assisted a disabled student at Rossington All Saints School with his aim of progressing to national standard in table tennis. A grant of £500 has enabled Adam Gittings, who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome, to travel to Slough, Harlow and Liverpool where he won Gold Silver and Bronze medals in the Slough Disability Grand Prix, two Golds in the BATTS Essex Disability Grand Prix and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Merseyside Disability Open. These performances have enhanced Adam’s ranking as the number one Class 11 Junior player in the country and number two Class 11 Senior player. Adam has been offered a place in September 2015 at the Bristol Table Tennis Academy where he would receive coaching from international players and coaches alongside his further education studying Sport and Exercise Science at HND level. He plays locally in Doncaster, Sheffield, Gainsborough and Scunthorpe and has tournaments coming up in the next couple of months in Southampton and Bristol. Adam’s parents continue to look for sponsorship to facilitate travel and accommodation for tournaments and can be contacted by email on gittingspaul@btinternet.com
