elcome to the June edition of W BAWTRY TODAY. TODAY While last months magazine was being

printed I enjoyed a week in Wales with my family. We were lucky enough to be there during the wonderful weather that we saw just before Easter enabling us to spend several happy days on the wonderful beaches on the south coast of Wales. It seems that more good weather is on its way and hopefully by the time you read this we will be in the middle of the promised heat wave. If the weather reports are to be believed we may indeed enjoy some sunshine over Whitsun and the half term school break will be perfect for outdoor play! I for one have my fingers crossed about this! The next edition will be delivered to you from 25th June. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it, is with me by Friday 10th June.

Best Wishes, Paula

+ STRAWBERRIES" ew Town Planning Consultancy established “KNICKERS no I'm not being rude I'm just

It is true to say that most people and organisations get involved in the town and country planning system at some stage. Often it is because they have a proposal to develop land, extend their property or change its use. Sometimes it is because development is proposed on land in the locality or a neighbour is proposing development to which the person or organisation wishes to object. Other reasons include wishing to make representations to the Local Authority on its policies and proposed plans for an area. Local professional help with all these matters is at hand. Alyson Linnegar, a Chartered Town Planner has set up a Planning Consultancy based in Haxey. With previous experience in the public, private and voluntary sectors in planning and housing, Alyson can assist individuals, Parish Councils, community and voluntary groups and businesses with planning issues that may affect them. She is also willing to give training sessions on various aspects of the planning system to Parish Councils and other organisations who regularly get involved in development proposals. Alyson can be contacted by telephone (01427 752536) or e-mail (alyson@theruralplanner.co.uk) for further and information advice or visit her website www.theruralplanner.co.uk

The top of Swan Street was taken up with Vespa’s and Lambretta’s, many original vehicles dating back to the sixties. Bliss owner Lee Jackson said “it was great to have all the scooters parked outside, there is a strong Italian influence to our coffee & food and just for a half an hour on Sunday, Swan Street looked like Naples or Milan”! Mark Godley of Bawtry Scooter Club said “ it was great to get everyone from the club together & get a commemorative picture of all the scooters together in our hometown”.

aw Deal for Bawtry Bus Users

I wonder if you are aware of the poor quality of late bus services for Bawtry residents. It was always ridiculous that the last bus from Doncaster direct to Bawtry ran at 10:20pm meaning that connections from Leeds and Manchester were almost impossible. At least there was the possibility of getting a journey via the airport leaving Doncaster at 11:00pm. Even this poor quality service has now been taken away so that the last public transport available to Bawtry is now 10:20pm, meaning Sheffield is now 9:15pm Compare this to other outlying districts. Tickhill gets a 22:50 last bus. Hatfield 23:31, Norton 22:45 Thorne 23:16, Conisbrough 23:40 Edlington 23:35, Finningley 23:01 This clearly illustrates the imbalance of provision for Bawtry travellers. I thought that the aim of Doncaster council was to integrate improve public transport. This is an important issue for Bawtry residents, does anyone else agree? Ron Hale

Happy Birthday Tickhill Country Market!

Twenty-five years ago in June, Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister; Richard Branson’s boat sped across the Atlantic in record time; Maradona’s hand of God was beating England in Mexico and on Friday 27th, Tickhill County Market opened for business. The Market started in the historic Parish Room and our records of that first Friday show that Fran Wright’s chocolate fudge shortbread cost 36p, Joan Heeley’s fruit loaves were £1.30, Jean Bellamy’s Victoria sponges were £1.00 and June Bishop’s egg custards 30p. Refreshments have always been served and our Friday morning market is still a place where customers can catch up on the gossip and local news. Today, we trade from the premises of the Methodist Church with the plant and garden produce stall at the Northgate entrance providing a warm welcome. Inside, we still sell chocolate fudge shortbread (though not at the same price!), a good range of crafts, many different cakes and savouries together with jams and chutneys, all homeproduced and using local ingredients wherever possible. We are committed to the community and support local activities such as the recent Scarecrow Festival, late night Christmas shopping and many other local events. And in the future? We will be extending our present Friday delivery services which we make to the offices & businesses of Tickhill and Bawtry, and for the first time, our preserves and baking will be available for sale in local shops. Pastor’s Page

As I write this the country is getting ready to vote in the Alternative Vote Referendum. If you enjoy politics you might well have your mind made up whether to vote yes or no. In fact, you might consider the correct vote is glaringly obvious to any thinking person (i.e. what you think). You may be the sort of person who isn’t very interested in politics but appreciates the privilege of democracy we enjoy and so will vote because you have the right to do so. Perhaps you weren’t sure which would be best for the country and decided which way to vote only after listening to the arguments of the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister (not forgetting the opinions of Joanna Lumley and David Gower). For some, politics does not appear on your radar at all; you have no interest and never vote. The Bible is very concerned about society – how we interact with our neighbours and with the state. It understands that communities need rulers, that those who disobey the rules need to be punished; the importance of honesty and fairness in trade and the courts; the need of governments to be financed; the necessity of defence and the value of education – to name but a few issues the Bible covers.

22 | BAWTRY TODAY

However, Christians are capable of some pretty nasty arguments when the subject of politics comes up; is God on the right or the left? How much does he expect central government to control the individual’s life? How many billions would Christ spend to protect the nation against potential threats? How much should society help those are at the margins and how much should they help themselves? These are some of the discussions we wrestle with; but is God really interested in the AV referendum, the exact system of electing our representatives? Is there a “Christian” vote and a “non-Christian” vote? One difference between some cults and genuine Biblical faith is that we are convinced that while there is only one way to know God (1 John 5:20 - We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true--even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life), we are also left to work out what that means in our lives for ourselves (Philippians 2:12 - … continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling). Hence, while other faiths may have non-negotiable lines to toe in even the minutiae of life, Christians can be relied upon to disagree on pretty much everything. What God is interested in is how we disagree;

Can I honour, respect and accept you and your opinion even if it be the opposite of mine? How do I treat you even if you and I always disagree on absolutely everything? Do I genuinely perceive Christ in you as I want you to perceive Christ in me? Can I bear this scripture in mind? Romans 12:10 - Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honour one another above yourselves. When we next find ourselves disagreeing with a Christian brother or sister; can we see it as a God-given opportunity to prove, not how clever or politically aware we are, but that we really do take our faith seriously? Please vote “yes” to this proposition; and however you feel best at the ballot box. God bless you. Simon Carter Bawtry Evangelical Free Church www.be4christ.org

awtry Theatre receives Art Council grant towards roof project

Members of Bawtry Dramatic Society are jubilant after receiving news that they have been awarded a £35,000 Arts Council grant towards essential repairs to their theatre roof. The £70,000 theatre roof project includes converting the flat roof above the stage to an apical one and replacing the old pitched roof above the auditorium. Work can now begin later this month as soon as the Theatre’s current production of ‘Find the Lady’ finishes its seven night run on Saturday (21st ). The project is scheduled to be completed in time for the opening of the Theatre’s new film season in September. ‘A former chapel, the building was first opened as a theatre in 1983. The roof above the auditorium is the original old chapel slate roof, dated 1837, and damaged by fire in 1964,’ says theatre director Bob Geeson. ‘The flat roof over the stage area has needed high maintenance over the last 10years and has been a drain on funds.’ The redesigned replacement roof over the auditorium and stage areas will incorporate new storage space, supports for lighting, sound, electric film screen and curtain tracks. Air conditioning and better ventilation will be installed to improve working conditions for all actors, production team and the comfort of the audience. ‘The theatre usage has grown in the last 5 years with the additional youth theatre, film society, folk nights and community groups, making our present space inadequate. We will be able to store more props and wardrobe and therefore reduce the production costs,’ says Mr Geeson. The balance of the £70,000 project costs will come from Bawtry Dramatic Society reserves and the various fundraising events carried out by members, including a sponsored cycle ride and Ceilidh. £1,000 is also being donated by Tickhill Lions. ‘We will be continuing to fundraise to cover the costs of additional electrical work and refurbishment of the theatre seating. Two of our members are planning a sponsored sky dive later in the year.’

Holidaying with (or without) your pet With Easter and the bank holiday weekends over, many people’s thoughts are turning towards planning their Summer holidays. Whether you are eagerly awaiting a long booked holiday or thinking about escaping on a last minute break, it’s important to remember your pets in your plans. Travelling Abroad If you are travelling abroad and planning on taking your pet with you, they may need a pet passport which involves a microchip and up to date rabies vaccination & needs planning months in advance. Staying in the UK Holidaying in the UK is a great way to spend time with your whole family, including your pet. Before you go, remember to ensure your pet’s flea and worm treatment is up to date and that they are microchipped. A microchip is smaller than a grain of rice and permanently identifies your pet so that you can be reunited if they are lost, even if their collar comes off. Holidaying without your pet Even if you are holidaying without your pet, they need to be taken into consideration. Arrange for family or friends to look after smaller animals and remember that any reputable kennels or cattery will insist on your pet having the correct vaccinations before they are allowed to stay. If you would like any more advice on care for your pets during the holidays, pop in and see us at Vets4Pets on Wentworth Road, Wheatley or book an appointment on 01302 556868.

T

he Everton Players

Based in the small Nottinghamshire village of Everton, the Village Players have an enviable reputation for the quality of their productions and attract members from Retford, Worksop, Doncaster and surrounding villages and audiences from an even wider area. The group is now looking for new members, both for acting and backstage roles. Said Players Chairman, David Bardsley: “We have a selection of excellent plays that we should like to stage, but our choices have been limited by the availability of actors for key roles. We would really welcome new members to help us tackle some more challenging productions; we will shortly be casting our October production, so there will be some early opportunities.” The Players, formed in 1979, stage 3 major productions a year and have successfully tackled a wide variety of plays, from Shakespeare to Pinter, Ayckbourn to Alan Bennett. In addition they write and produce their own murder mystery evenings (the next, in aid of the Bassetlaw Hospice, is to be at Ye Olde Bell at Barnby Moor in September) and organise theatre trips, play readings and other events for members. They also have a youth section, which will be performing dances and songs at Everton’s “Flowers for Four Parishes” thevent on Everton Sports Field on Sunday 19 June. More details about the Players are on their web site: www.evplayers.org.uk. Tunnel Tech Complaints Committee. Twenty Years of Torment is ENOUGH We Need Your Help! A newly formed sub-committee of Misson Parish Council has begun a monthly drop in meeting about the problems caused by Tunnel Tech Mushroom Composting Farm. The meetings will be held on the last Thursday of every month from 7.30pm onwards at the Misson Community Centre. Residents, businesses, and affected parties from all local parishes are welcome to attend. You can receive news about any developments regarding the abatement or cessation of the obnoxious odours emitted from the Tunnel Tech compost factory. Collect logging sheets to record the incidents and bring them back the following month for us to forward them to Bassetlaw Environmental Officials, (all recorded information is invaluable evidence should court action become necessary). Address, sign and date a pre set formal letter of complaint that we will forward to Bassetlaw District Council. We desperately need everybody who has had enough of this violation to come forward and make your voices heard. Businesses, do you know that a local business have a 10% discount off their business rates due to the detrimental effect the ‘STENCH’ has on their business? Register with us and we will fight for the right to breathe clean air. If you cannot attend these meetings but would like more information you can contact us by the following methods:Email ttccmpc@gmail.com or missonparish@tiscali.co.uk By phoning Sue Scott, clerk to Misson Parish Council 01302 711887 The Tunnel Tech Complaints Committee

ickhill & District Lions

Tickhill & District Lions are pleased to announce the return of our summer raffle. We haven’t held a summer raffle for a few years, however this year we’ve managed to source some fabulous prizes and so the chance was just too good to miss. The raffle has a ‘holiday’ theme, and prizes on offer include a city break for 2 people (3 rd prize), a pair of first class train tickets to London with a £100 hotel voucher (2 nd prize). The 1st prize winner will win a fabulous week in a beautiful apartment in Fuerteventura, complete with a £150 travel voucher to help get you there and a choice of dates when you could go. The fully equipped apartment sleeps up to 4 people and sits on the first floor directly overlooking a large freshwater swimming pool. Although the apartment is surrounded by stunning botanical gardens, shops, bars and restaurants are just a few minutes’ walk away. Just a 15 minute walk will take you to the centre of Corralejo, or to white sandy beaches with turquoise waters which are very calm and child friendly. (Those with internet access can find further details of the apartment at www.holidaylettings.co.uk/64941). So for just £1 a ticket there are some fabulous prizes on offer. Tickets are on sale in all of the usual places and we’ll also be selling tickets on our stall at the Tickhill Gala on the 2 nd of July. The draw for the summer raffle will take place on the 14th of August at another event we’d like to announce this month. Our 2011 Steam-up will be held at The Oak pub in Tickhill on Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 14th of August. More news about this next month!

LONG MEADOWS

I initially raised the poor state of Long Meadows road/footpaths with Nottinghamshire C.C. towards the end of March 2010, receiving a reply that the enquiry would be 'passed to a specialist who would reply a.s.a.p.' I was later informed by N.C.C. that a 'technical officer' is usually sent out to access the damage within ten days. By mid May I received a reply that N.C.C. were processing the survey data and by mid June (and after my sending two further e-mails) N.C.C. did eventually come back with a reply stating it was very likely that Long Meadows would be included in year 2010/2011 programme for re-surfacing. On 08 July 2010 I received confirmation that N.C.C. had St Nicholas Church and approved the re-surfacing but it was not known when St Helena’s Church this work would be, this prompted me to raise a petition to express the underlining feelings of residents, and early Special Family Father’s Day August I received a letter stating that N.C.C. would Celebration Service inform residents as to when projected work would Sunday 19th June commence. 10am at St Nicholas Church, On 11 October 2010 after no reply from N.C.C. I sent Bawtry e-mails to : J. Mann (MP), M. Burrows (Chief Executive N.C.C.) and K. Cutts (Leader N.C.C.) which appeared to set Followed my crafts for the the wheels in motion and as we all know re-surfacing children, games for the Dad’s, work began in November 2010, however the severe and Bacon Butties for all!!! weather did put a stop to the road being re-surfaced. Bring your Dad along whatever age!! During February 11 I again sent e-mails to J.Mann, M.Burrows and K.Cutts, following on from this I was informed by N.C.C. that Tarmac had been contracted to re-surface our road and finish the work, and even though it has taken many months of e-mails and phone calls the end result is excellent and as several people have commented Tarmac have done a sterling job. I have looked into the various websites and unfortunately seem to have found little active time given over by others to really pursue this matter. I hope this highlights peoples awareness to the events Bawtry Resident Donation to Help the Heroes in lieu of article inclusion
