100% Success at Mattersey Primary
Following the recent publication of school league tables, we are very pleased to share the news that once again our results at the end of Key Stage 2 are very good! 100% of our children achieved level 4 or better in Reading, Writing and Maths. When compared with other schools locally – we came out on top!
Another busy month at Mattersey Primary
Although we visit the local church in Mattersey at various times throughout the school year, it is not often that we get to have a proper look at the church itself and the artefacts within. Our younger children are learning about churches in their RE lessons and as part of this we visited the church to explore and learn more about it. Rev Smithurst very kindly gave us a guided tour and helped us to consider why the church is important. The children really enjoyed their visit and found out lots about the church that they didn’t already know. We would like to thank Rev Smithurst for the time he took out of his busy schedule to show us around
Mattersey Archaeological Project (MAP)
On Friday 24th February we will be taking part in activities organised through MAP. This is a very valuable cross generation community cohesion project, with which we hope everyone in the community will get involved at some point. On this date the children will be undertaking archaeology type activities which will include ‘Field Walking’ on our school field in the search for ‘treasure!’ At 2:45pm there will be a short presentation from the MAP organisers who will be able to provide additional information about activities that everyone can get involved in over the coming months. This will be followed at 3:00pm by an assembly where the children will share with you their findings. We are also looking for people in the village/local area who may have information about a time capsule that was buried at school during the late 80’s (when Mrs Andrews was Head Teacher). If you have any information about this, including photos, ideas of where it might be! etc please let us know. School will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2014 and we would like to relocate the capsule prior to this.
Snow fun!
The first weekend in February brought with it snow and as much as we adults complain about it, children just love it. At school we try to make the most of opportunities as they arise in order to enthuse and motivate the children. The snow provided an ideal opportunity for the children to find out about insulating and thermal properties and of course snowman building. I’m sure you’ll agree that some fine efforts were made here

ayflower Animal Sanctuary , Narrow Lane, Bawtry Doncaster As the weather gets colder we have to use all our resources to keep our dogs warm and dry. This can be a never ending task, but somehow we manage it. The weather has been so cold our dogs have been kept indoors for longer periods and when they are in there pens we make sure there are plenty of coats available to keep them warm. The snow hasn't as yet wreaked the havoc that it did last year. But I guess there is still time. We are still seeing lots of dogs and cats being abandoned. Recently 2 such dogs were left tied to our gate, this is really sad and if the owners would have just come to us we would have done our best to help. The dogs are fit and healthy so obviously came from a good home. At least the owners didn't just abandon them on a busy road or worse tied up in a wood and left to die. They made sure they were safe and sure to be found. We are still seeing an influx of cats and kittens, again these are often left in a cat carriers at our gate. We have the most beautiful cats and kittens. Please if you would like to give a cat a loving home come along and see if you can find that special pet, I am sure you wont be disappointed. I talked about Mary the Spaniel cross in the last issue, she had horrendous burns on her little body. Well she is now with her forever loving new owners, leading a very spoilt life. They already had a dog of their own and wanted another as a companion. Mary has fitted in perfectly I am told, so there you are another happy ending. I would like to thank everyone that has called me to ask about Mary, I think she could have been re-homed ten times over. We also have some very beautiful Cyprus Poodles that need good homes. These little dogs are very pretty often cream and strawberry blonde in colour. Again please come to look round if you are thinking of wanting to adopt a dog we will give you as much advise as possible as to which dog would suit your lifestyle. We still need lots of towels and bedding to keep our dogs and cats dry and happy. I would like to thank everyone that has donated so far. If you would like to donate any of the above to the Sanctuary or call the number below I will be happy to collect . If you would like further information regarding adopting a cat or dog please call 01302711330 or 07969 203206

GET INVOLVED! One of our local gyms has sent out a rallying call to all local residents young and old with the message to raise as much money as possible for charity while trying to get more physically active this Olympic year. Luke Walker, owner of Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio is also Exercise Therapist for the Rotherham Institute for Obesity (RIO) and deals with patients with low confidence, self esteem and health problems on a daily basis. “Up to 85% of the population don’t do any form of exercise regularly and I just wanted to use this Olympic year to get the message out there that everyone has the power to set themselves a target and train towards it”. He aims to get as many residents of Bawtry, Tickhill, Harworth & Bircotes participating in physical activity and as a result make as much money for some very worthwhile charities. He asks that If you cannot enter for medical reasons then please support your neighbourhood by sponsoring someone you know. If one person from each home does just 1 event then we can raise a lot of money for some very worthwhile Charities. Let’s come together as a community! To register for any of the events and get involved in any way you can visit his website. For further information call 01302 711152 or visit www.bawtryhealthandfitness.co.uk

ickhill & District Lions This month, Tickhill and District Lions Club are reaching out to the community to find people who could benefit from one of the many initiatives we support – Message in a Bottle. Message in a Bottle (or MIAB) is a simple idea that can save the life of anyone on medication or who suffers allergies. It takes the form of a small green bottle in which the user keeps a full record of their medical prescriptions, allergies and any information that may be required in the event of an emergency. It includes a form to prompt users on what details to record, stickers so that Paramedics know to check the fridge (that’s where the bottle needs to be stored for easy access!) and full instructions on how it should be used. As a minimum it saves the Emergency Services valuable time identifying you and your emergency contacts, and at best, by telling whether you have special medication or allergies, it is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users, their friends and families. And this is where we need you! Please help us to identify anyone that can benefit from this little green bottle. It might be your parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles or the lady down the road. You might be part of a community centre, social group or a chess club – if anyone there takes medication they need a green bottle! MIAB is fully funded by the charitable donations we receive, and as such is free to every user. Please contact us on 07752 688 340 or at contact@tickhill-lions.com to get your bottles.

luebell Wood Children’s Hospice is looking for new supporters and active volunteers to start a new Fundraising Support Group in the Bawtry area. If you feel you have time to spare then your help really does make a difference in raising the annual £3 million required for the hospice to provide the care offered to the children. We receive no statutory government funding. For more information contact Rachael Dawes 01909 517365 or email: Rachael.dawes@bluebellwood.org. Bluebell Wood – a lifeline for families Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice at North Anston proudly opened its doors to families in Sept 2008. The hospice cares for children and young adults with a shortened life expectancy. Bluebell Wood is one of only 40 children’s hospices in the UK, and covers a large area including all of South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and North West Lincolnshire. Caring for a child with a life-limiting condition can be an exhausting 24 hour a day, seven day a week job for families as these children have complex medical needs. Bluebell Wood offers planned periods of respite allowing children to enjoy a range of stimulating activities whilst getting the one to one medical care they need. The hospice has a sensory room, a hydrotherapy spa, a music room, a messy play room and a specially designed outdoor play area. Planned respite stays allow parents to take a break, often the first they may have had in years, knowing that their child is safe and well looked after. The dedicated facilities at Bluebell Wood mean the child has fun, and can experience activities they may not be able to participate in at home. The hospice also offers emergency care, which is a lifeline for a range of family situations, providing extra support when needed. Bluebell Wood also provides end of life facilities for children. Parents chose for their child to spend their last days at the hospice in a safe, secure and often familiar non-hospitalised environment whilst still having access to the specialised medical care their child needs. Our care team can also support children in their own homes during this difficult time. Bluebell Wood has dedicated services in place for siblings, parents and grandparents, both before and after bereavement. The support offered to children by Bluebell Wood is invaluable. It costs £3m every year to provide this care and the hospice receives no statutory government funding. It is only thanks to public support that we can continue helping as many children and their families as we do. To learn more about Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice or to find out how you can help support us go to www.bluebellwood.org .

Bawtry Town Council NEWSLETTER
March 2012
www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk
Bawtry Library Although negotiations with DMBC are still continuing, Bawtry Community Library is set to become independently operated from 1st March, 2012 and will officially become operational to the public on Friday 2nd March, 2012. The library, with an active volunteer group of 60 (including 13 lead volunteers), will ensure the library is open from Monday to Friday until 6pm and on a Saturday, from from 10am to 2pm. The position of DMBC has changed somewhat in that, although running costs such as rent, rates and ancillaries will still have to be met by the Community Group, other costs will continue to be met by DMBC in the interim (This of course does not include any staffing costs). We thank most sincerely the DMBC Library staff for their dedicated work to Bawtry and its community as they have made the library what it is today. We wish them well in retirement and for the future. Interim contact for this project is via Mr. George Spencer (Chairman-Bawtry Town Council) not the Clerk to the Council. (Details at the end of this newsletter) School Crossing Patrol – Station Road The vacancies for this post still require filling and another recruitment campaign will take place by DMBC (Contact Nancy Higgins on 01302 737086 ). If you can spare some time in a morning/ afternoon please get in touch. In these times of austerity, especially with DMBC, we do not want this vital position to fall by the wayside. Apply online at www.jobsdoncaster.gov.uk or by collecting an application form from The Mansion House, Doncaster. We are very grateful for the relief school crossing warden currently working at the location, however that is not permanent . If you can help please contact Mr George Spencer (Chairman – Bawtry Town Council) who will ensure your details are passed to DMBC. Highway Issues Damaged street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc) should be reported to DMBC for action. Please remember that the Customer Service Centre at Bawtry Library is still the point for you personally to report any matters of concern to DMBC, the highway authority, or by telephoning Doncaster Council on 736000. DMBC has received complaints regarding the number of ‘black cabs’ possibly operating illegally within Bawtry town centre. Apparently, for this type of taxi, a designated rank is required and currently Bawtry does not have this facility. We have suggested to DMBC that perhaps bays on the High Street could be designated for this purpose and we await further comment. Businesses Congratulations continue for Bawtry businesses in the achievement of awards in differing categories. Airport & Tunnel Tech Complaints Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so these can be logged by the appropriate authority. The new contact email for Tunnel Tech complaints is: Amy.Ogden@bassetlaw.gov.uk. It is very important that residents lodge their complaints, so that accurate records may be kept by the authorities concerned, for possible future use. 30 | BAWTRY TODAY
New Hall Management Committee This independent charity, including four custodian trustees from the Town Council, is looking for more people to serve as trustees. The trustee board is made up of regular users, casual users, 4 town council trustees and up to 4 co-opted members. If you are interested in giving something back to your local community and can give some time (6 meetings per year), then please contact the Secretary of the New Hall Management Committee – Mrs Pauline Walker on 01302 710489 for more information. Resignation It is with regret that the resignation of Councillor Andrew West has been tendered effective from 7th February, 2012, due to work commitments. We thank him for his efforts to the council and the community. The legal procedure will be followed and if appropriate co-option could take place at the April meeting. Notices have been placed on the town’s notice boards giving residents 14 days to request an election. If no election is called then the town council will fill the vacancy by co-option, and a further Notice advising of the required procedure will also be posted.
