Welcome to
the MAY 2014 edition
“So many books, so little time.” Frank Zappa Last month I talked about reading, and I am really hoping that by the time you read this I will have managed to polish off a book or three from my ‘want to read’ list. I am writing this, only days after you received your last magazine, however, all being well you will be receiving this shortly after I return from a few days of Easter sunshine. A lazy trip is planned, with plenty of time for reading and generally relaxing – not that I shall be allowing my eldest to do too much relaxing, I’m afraid he will taking very different books with him, as he heads ever closer to impending GCSE exams! As always we welcome several new advertisers to the magazine this month, it must be the time of year that attracts lots of businesses to promote themselves. Whether contacting advertisers old or new please don’t forget to say where you saw their advert! The June issues will be delivered to you late May – around the time of the Bank holiday. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th May.

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre presents... Life and Beth, A Comedy Drama by Alan Ayckbourn. 17th - 24th May 2014 It's Christmas and Beth is mourning the recent death of her health and safety officer husband, Gordon. Her son Martin has come to stay and so has Connie, her sister in law. They are both determined that Beth has a stress free Christmas. But between Connie's drinking problem and Martin's unspeaking and emotionally volatile girlfriend, their intentions prove to be short lived. Only David, the local vicar provides Beth with any comfort, but when he says a prayer for her bereavement, he unwittingly summons Gordon's ghost to return.
Charity Appeals For
‘Hosts With The Most’ To Help Transform The Lives Of Lonely Elderly People In Doncaster Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is appealing for volunteers in Doncaster willing to welcome a small group into their home for a tea party, just one or two afternoons a year. The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities. Each older guest is taken to the volunteer host’s home by a volunteer driver, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship for a couple of hours. The monthly gatherings exist as a vital lifeline of friendship for the charity’s older guests, however, the regular outings for the popular group in Doncaster are currently under threat due to a lack of volunteers able to host the tea parties. Contact the Elderly’s North and Midlands Executive Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but this lifeline in Doncaster is currently under threat due to a real shortage of volunteer hosts in the area. Being a host requires a commitment of just a couple of hours, once or twice a year, and anyone who has a downstairs toilet, easy access to their home and a decent sized teapot is eligible! Our volunteers genuinely get as much out of the experience as our older guests, so I’m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” T 4

community We have a couple of great events this month from The People-For you. Nottingham Playhouse are touring a WW1 commemorative play – The Second Minute –and the Donni Folk Festival with some great musicians playing in the Town. Many people’s image of folk music is a bearded old guy with his finger in his ear. This is folk music, but not exclusively. Fantastic harmony singing and rousing sea shanties I do love, but it is a broad church of brilliant musicianship and socialist lyrics and sometimes electric guitars. There is no such thing as a fascist folk singer – as the genre’s name declares it is music of Folk, of ordinary working people, those who tramped the Derbyshire hills for the rightto-roam or who were pressed into service . If you only see Chris Wood to hear his song of the murder of Jean Charles de-Menezes you will have spent your money well.
Village Ventures this month presents: Nottingham Playhouse are touring their play The Second Minute round Nottinghamshire this month and it will be playing at Bircotes Town Hall on Sunday 11 May at 7.30. To mark the centenary of the WW1 and based upon the archive letter collection of the Sherwood Foresters regiment, this poignant and uplifting production weaves together heroic comic and heartbreaking tales of soldiers and families through their own words. In doing so the play explores how this most elemental and vanishing form of communication managed to hold the country together whilst a generation of men was being destroyed. tickets: 010320 752642 or call into the Hall £8/£4 child/ £18 family ticket www. villageventures.org.uk T

community Our building work has started and we are all getting very excited. We have been left a sum of money from a lovely benefactor with the proviso that the money went towards a project. We have needed a new Reception area for quite some time and this has given us the opportunity to start this new build. We hope that other kind hearted people can contribute to help us finish this project.
Finding a forever home
The reception will enable us to offer a warm friendly and inviting environment; we will also then be able to offer group and school education sessions and seminars to help educate children and adults about caring for animals. The ongoing work will be a little disruptive so please bear with us when you come along to view any of our dogs and cats. A big thank you to all the Mayflower Angels that have brought washing powder, washing up liquid, black bags etc this has saved us a fortune. Please everyone feel free to contribute if you would like to. This is a great benefit to us. We still have some lovely puppies that need good homes, if you think you can give a puppy a home and have bags of patience and energy please come and see us. We also have some beautiful dogs and cats waiting for that special person to give them a home. We have had to re arrange one of our fund raising events. The photo shoot for your beloved pet has been postponed to the 6th July to coincide with our Scruffs Dog Show in Tickhill. 8

community Can You Help? Mattersey Primary School will be celebrating its 50th Jubilee this summer and will be holding a ‘Wartime Themed Country Show’ on Friday 20th June 2014. Our hope is that this event will bring together our school and the wider local community. The children have been learning about the wartime period this term and have made links with prior and ongoing learning including our work on developing the outdoor environment. We have been growing our own vegetables, have a small flock of chickens and have worked hard to engage with the great outdoors. We enjoy taking care of our chickens and learning about how to look after them. They have settled in well and are looking really healthy. The children were disappointed after the half term break to discover that one had gone missing! Tikka, a Rhode Island Red, mysteriously disappeared during February half term and has not been seen since. If anyone locally has gained a chicken who, having spent a lot of time around children, is particularly friendly, please get in touch with us at school on 01777 817265. On the day of the show we will be displaying and selling our own produce as well as hopefully demonstrating some of the long lost traditions of the past. We are looking for local residents who make their own jams/ preserves, grow their own veg, produce their own crafts (knitting etc) to get involved. If you are interested in putting on a short demonstration or using the opportunity to showcase your talents, please get in touch. Let’s work together to make this a great day for the whole community. If you attended the school at any point during its history whether as a pupil or employee, we would love to hear from you. Any photographs etc would be greatly appreciated. Newspaper articles etc are proving difficult to unearth and we would greatly appreciate any resource you may have which would help the children learn more about the school in the past. Our work next term will incorporate lots of learning about our own history. T

Living relatives are invited to come into school to sign a cross in memory of the fallen. Last year a wreath was laid on behalf of the children of Mattersey Primary, and we would like to mark the 100th anniversary of WW1 by extending this to the local community. Pete Cox, our school handyman, will be visiting the battlefields and will be able to lay the crosses at each graveside. Do you suffer with headaches unnecessarily?
Headaches are something most of us are familiar with – whether it’s the occasional alcohol induced fog or a more debilitating weekly occurrence. But did you know that problems in the neck are estimated to be the cause of headaches in 18% of the population? (Other causes include migraine, cluster headaches, tension headaches and serious pathology). Stiffness in the joints and tissues of the spine can cause headaches with the patient typically experiencing a dull ache or boring pain on one or both sides of the head or face. Accompanying symptoms can include nausea, blurred vision, dizziness or light-headedness. These headaches may be occasional or frequent and can last from a few hours to a few days. Patients (more often female than male) usually have a long history of headaches and may have visited their GP many times over the years. Symptomatic treatment using painkillers is often unsatisfactory in the long term. If you have headaches like this, it could be that the root cause of the problem is in the neck. An appointment with a physiotherapist would enable them to assess and test your neck to establish the presence of any movement dysfunction in the spine which could then be corrected with appropriate manual therapy techniques, exercise and advice. Meanwhile, keep your neck healthy by checking your posture, taking regular breaks from any activity where your neck is held in one position, relaxing if you are prone to stress to reduce tension across your shoulders and avoiding using too many pillows in bed.

If you like walking, there is a group with a Trained leader, that meets on Tuesdays at 1pm outside the Methodist Church in Bawtry, we walk for approx. 45-60minutes then come back for a chat & coffee/tea. All welcome, telephone, Angela 714524.
This was one of the many pieces of advice which Janet Stain imparted when she visited us on Wednesday 26th March. With her usual sense of wit and humour she entertained us with her carefully researched tales of beauty and other habits through the ages. She left all of us feeling glad that we could take daily baths and showers for granted, and the younger ones amongst us were happy, too, that they hadn’t grown up and got married in the 50s and 60s like some of us. Janet has made the trip from the south of Sheffield to Misson three times now, and we look forward to a further visit in the not too distant future – though you have to plan well in advance to make sure she is available. On 30th April, Angela Axelby will show us how to make soya wax candles and talk about the teacups she uses for her craft, and our meeting on Wednesday 28th May will be our AGM followed by a members’ evening. We look forward to your joining us, either as a member for the whole year or as a guest at individual meetings. Please contact our President, Joanna Phillips on 07747443374 for more information, or turn up on the last Wednesday of every month, at the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson, where you will be very welcome. We have an excellent catering team who ensure an endless supply of refreshments, which includes home-made cake. T

Garden View
A Thorny Issue Whatever your opinion of roses, there’s no denying that this flower is the epitome of traditional English gardening, and maybe for some that’s just the problem. For some people the memories of insipid flowers sitting above leggy stalks and diseased leaves is enough to put them off ever planting another rose bush again. Classified as a woody perennial, with over a hundred species it is still by far one of Britain’s favourite plants. Native to China, the humble rose grows well in our climate, where the cool moist winters and warm (ish) summers mean that as long as we don’t experience too much rain (which can cause petals to fuse together before fully opening) plants should live happily for many years. That said they are not ‘forever plants’ and should not be held on to for sentimental reasons. I’ve removed no end of beds planted up in the 60’s with nothing more than clumps of baked clay soil as their companion. Roses are best planted bare root between November and February but are most often purchased containerised when in flower during the summer months. If well watered in their first year, roses planted this way should establish well. Plant slightly deeper than you think you 18

need, burying the graft (woody knuckle) fractionally below the soil. Humans are not the only admirers of roses and they can suffer from numerous pests and diseases so prepare yourself for battle. Problems include; brown scale, rose aphids, rose leaf-rolling sawfly, rose dieback, rose powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rose rust. That said there are disease-resistant varieties, and prevention is always better than cure. If planted in good soil (they don’t mind heavy clay) and in a well prepared hole with some homemade compost or manure, then fed in March with a special rose fertiliser before another layer of compost or manure is placed on top, and watered well they will provide you with a long lasting combination of colour and scent. For added interest, why not grow two varieties together which complement each other, or flower at different times for lengthier impact. On a sunny wall try; Rosa ‘Blush Noisette’, a great repeat flowerer with small double pink flowers, ‘Lady Waterlow’ for silky pink blooms and healthy foliage, ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ for exquisite scent, or ‘Etoile de Hollande’ for a splash of rich scarlet red. Ground cover roses such as the ‘flower carpet range’ are great for
covering banks and are extremely low maintenance, or try an avenue of standard roses such as ‘Winchester Cathedral’ which look fabulous when under planted with lavender or lush low growing evergreens. Finally for a wonderful thornless variety try Rosa ‘Mortimer Sackler’.
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Getting older... They tell us you can plot your aging process when policemen start appearing young, then when doctors don’t seem old enough to have qualified and you’re really getting on once you’ve got a few years on the Prime Minister. Oh dear. I am three years older than David Cameron. Last month I had another shock – I went to a concert to see a band I loved in my youth; those skinny, indefatigable angry young men were just like me, and they still are; only now they are balding, pot-bellied and needing to sit down half way through to catch their breath. Most of the audience were similarly middle-aged; it was the band’s 40th anniversary tour, after all. St. Paul had been an angry young man too; in his 20’s he travelled far and wide to crush anyone he felt was promoting falsehood; encouraging the persecution, and even killing, of anyone who dared to call themselves “Christian”. After his dramatic encounter with Christ (where the expression “Damascus road conversion” comes from) he started to passionately promote Christianity rather than trying to destroy it. Motivated now by love, his method of trying to influence people changed radically and he became known for his respectful, humble and, at times, humorous way of talking to people; often attracting large crowds to hear him. 28

In his middle age Paul noticed that his body was slowing down but he didn’t allow it to discourage him; when aged about 55 he wrote; “We do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.” As I preside over my crumbling body (dimming eyes, failing hearing, coronary heart disease, aching back, etc, etc) St. Paul encourages me not to focus on how to try and delay the inevitable but rather to be doing all I can to be fostering the growth and energising of my inner, spiritual, life. So when you feel a midlife crisis coming on, don’t dig out that 30 year old rock n roll T shirt; rather spend your time, money and energy on the renewal of your inner, spiritual, life – after all, while your body may last up to another 40 years, your spirit will live for ever. I want you to join me in dancing and enjoying music way past our 50’s.

RETAILERS ROCKIN’ ALL OVER THE RACES! As the town prepares to welcome rock legends Status Quo for a landmark concert at Doncaster Racecourse, plans are also taking shape for a packed racing schedule as the third ‘Visit Bawtry’ Race Meeting takes place prior to the concert on Saturday 17th May 2014. Retailers in the affluent town are sponsoring the entire race card to promote their businesses and the town of Bawtry whilst supporting one of Doncaster’s greatest assets - the wonderful racecourse. “Bawtry and Doncaster Racecourse are both proud of the part they have played in Doncaster’s heritage and enjoy combining their individual strengths to create a memorable evening’s racing,” commented Rebecca Dickenson chair Bawtry Retail Association. “ It is always a fantastic evening and will be made even more special with a chance for race goers to see one of the UK’s most well known rock bands.” Retailers in the town who are sponsoring the races include The Crown Hotel, Robinsons of Bawtry, China Rose Cantonese Restaurant, Fine and Country Estate Agents, Caviars of Bawtry, Incognito and Walsh and West Commercial Risks Ltd. “It is expected to be a sell out event so we’re urging people to secure their tickets early,” said Rebecca. “It will be another superb way to put Bawtry on the map - educating race goers just what a great place it is to shop, socialise, stay, live and do business.” The event has been organised by Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) which is a member organisation dedicated to promoting Bawtry as a retail and social destination. The towns retailers range from designer clothing boutiques for all the family, art galleries, gift shops, home accessories and specialist food outlets. Further information regarding Bawtry Retail Association (BRA) will be available on its new website - www. visitbawtry.com coming soon. T
Tickhill & District Lions Club Race Night The Lions race night team would like to thank the committee, bar staff and members of the Top Club in Rossington for a very enjoyable evening in March. It is always a pleasure to spend time at the Top Club. A very successful evening raised a super £390, all of which was donated to the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal.
St Marys School, Tickhill With an increasing number of children learning to play instruments the school have created a designated ‘Music Room’ out of a room previously used for storage and photocopying. Lions have donated £500 towards decoration, carpets and suitable furniture and look forward to children being able to accompany the new school choir.

Bawtry Town Council - ANNUAL REPORT – 2013/2014
The report covers the period 1st April, 2013 to 31st March, 2014. The year commenced with a full contingent of members i.e. 13 (12 elected 1 co-opted) and this continued for the period of the report. During the course of the year the town council has given observations on approximately 53 planning applications and continued to make observations when required on licensing applications to DMBC who are the planning authority/decision makers. At a recent meeting a presentation was given on a 3D Seismic Survey being undertaken in the area, which may result in further activity through planning consent in the future. We were assured that in the built up area of Bawtry seismic survey activity would not take place on this occasion. The Town Council (through funds allocated), funded, a planning application for the MSF project, which received approval from Bassetlaw District Council. The application was part of the B.A.R.S. ongoing project for the MSF. Government cuts on local authorities continued to have an effect on DMBC activity and a Boundary Commission Review may result in the loss of one Ward Member per Ward and a change to the current Ward boundaries structure. Our Ward members who attend meetings when available are to be thanked for their contribution to Bawtry. Cllr. Ford has recovered from illness, Cllr. Hoyle Is recovering from operations and Cllr. Bartlett is not seeking re-election in May this year. We thank them. From the Ward members flexible budget (which no longer is available) a seat is to 38

be erected on Doncaster Road/Kingswood area. The police have seen the retirement of Inspector Andrea Cowling and her replacement of Inspector T. Mountford who covers from Adwick to Bawtry. Attendance at our meetings of staff (when available) has been promised and PACT meetings continue in the area with priorities set. The Town Council continually make observations and requests to DMBC who are the principal authority to take action on reducing speed limits, pot holes and the state of footpaths, signage and highway matters generally. DMBC of course have constraints imposed on them but also a favourite word “Criteria” so not everything is actioned at the time. Kerbing has been requested at the junction of Tickhill Road/High Street with no outcome so far. Inconsiderate/irresponsible parking on the highway/footpaths is continually reported to DMBC and they do attend and issue fix penalty notices – even to regular offenders. A request from members of the retail association for a taxi rank (outside Jones solicitors) received an objection (not from the Town Council) and was put on hold -–a further attempt for a taxi rank in parking bays near the Co-op is now under consideration. A request to SYPTE for a bus shelter resulted in a response of no funding in 2013/14 or 2014/15 but we will continue with our efforts. Although slightly improved from an odour point, problems still exist with compliance to Permit Conditions, and Bassetlaw District Council

The Town Council Window dressing competition was this year won by Robinson’s of Bawtry. The competition for the future will be run by Bawtry Retail Association with hopefully different categories. The Christmas Eve Carols were also once again a success and thanks go to everyone involved including the provision of free mince pies and coffee. Planters around the town were tendered for and provided by Messrs. Gillies Of Austerfield The precept (the parish levy on residents) remained for the 11th year at £26k, DMBC increased their base Council Tax by 2%. The allotments have a waiting list and continue to be well used. Special thanks go to John Bruard for he has freely assisted the council over a number of years with regards the allotments and their upkeep, but regrettably owing to illness can no longer continue. Cllr. Winter has assisted in the past and hopefully will continue for the future with maintenance again voluntarily, for which we thank him. 40

MARCH MUSIC.
For their March concert Tickhill Music Society presented the audience with a carefully balanced programme of string quartets played by the splendid Villiers Quartet. The concert began with the first of Haydn’s last two quartets. Although by this time Haydn was getting old and frail he had reached the pinnacle of his chamber music writing career. He had been commissioned to write the traditional set of six but only completed two. The first, Op 77 No.1 in G major, is a sparkling work and from the crisp opening chords it was clear that the audience was to be treated to some fine music making. From the march rhythm of the opening movement to the sprightly Presto of the finale the Villiers gave us a satisfying opening to the evenings music. The Quartet No. 5 by the American composer Philip Glass was a sharp contrast. It has five movements played without any breaks and captured the spirit of New York, ‘the city

that never sleeps’. Particularly impressive was the powerful mechanical drive of the second movement dominated by the relentless pounding of the cello. The final work after the interval was Elgar’s Quartet in E minor, Op 83, a late work not often heard these days. The second movement is labelled ‘piacevole’ which means ‘pleasantly easy’. The piece displayed all the characteristics of Elgar’s style and made a fitting conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable concert. The incisive precision and sensitive musicality of the Villiers Quartet produced another triumph for Tickhill Music Society. Philip Mottram T

Move & Inspired Me Things are continuing to look very exciting for the ‘Move and Inspire Me’ Team as we work our way towards the summer. Crime figures across the area are generally looking good year on year. However, the most concerning area of crime at the minute is vehicle crime, particularly theft from vehicles. I cannot stress enough the importance of not leaving anything on show. Even the sight of a small amount of change left on show will give some criminals enough motive to put a window through. Do not leave empty carrier bags, or ones containing nothing but rubbish on show. They do not know that they contain nothing of value, and will want to have a look to check. Some people decide to leave their cars unlocked to avoid having a window put through, but this is not the answer. The majority of criminals are opportunists, and will try every car door on a street and search them if unlocked, whether there is anything on view or not. Please follow the above advice, and most importantly report anything suspicious. If there is someone acting suspiciously, this is usually for a reason, so do not think that someone else will ring. Even if we do not catch them with anything on them, if they keep getting reported and stopped by us, they will think twice about returning to the same area again. Call South Yorkshire Police on 101, or 999 in an emergency. Alternatively, report through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or via their website. T
Our head Instructor has been working very hard over the last few months working towards her Yoga Teaching Diploma and recently passed her practical exam with flying colours - Well Done Deborah. This means we will be able to add Yoga to our already wide range of classes available very soon. Move and Inspire are very excited to now be working in partnership with several local schools offering classes for students, parents and the local community. We already have several classes running at Hayfield School and will very soon be starting classes at Sir Thomas Wharton Community College in Edlington. Please keep an eye on our website for details of these new classes. As a not for profit organisation, being so actively involved in the community is what’s important to us so look out for us at Tickhill Scarecrow Festival and The Big Lunch, we’ll be the ones dancing around having fun!!! As well as this we have also been working very hard on new choreography to keep our current classes fresh and vibrant and most of our classes are full to the brim of people having lots of fun doing simple choreography to their favourite songs whilst getting fit. These popular classes which are a blend of Body Conditioning, Zumba, Aerobics, FitSteps and many other dance styles are held in Tickhill, Bawtry and Blyth and offer both high impact and low impact options. Please visit our website for details of all our classes. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in joining any of our classes. We currently have a special offer running with classes available from just £3 when paid for in advance. Please visit www.moveandinspire.me.uk or email moveandinspireme@icloud.com for more details. T
