Welcome to the

November

Extra Tui on Support Services

2016 edition

For ages 5 to 11 years old

“It is not happy people who are thankful, it is thankful people who are happy” I know that we don’t celebrate thanksgiving in the UK but this quote still seemed appropriate for our November introduction! Being grateful for what you have is such an easy way to be happy. You may not have as much as someone else (let’s face it, we can’t all be Kardashians — and honestly, would you really want to be?), but once you really look at the things in your life that you value; perhaps it’s your health, your family, your friends — you’ll realise that riches don’t always come in the form of money. By making a point of focussing on all the good already present in our lives we cultivate positivity and increase our happiness.

This issue sees the start of some Christmas mentions. Where has 2016 gone? I can’t believe that Christmas is already on its way. Maybe it is an indication of my age that years some to fl y by so much quicker than they used to! The December issues will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th November. This is of course the Christmas issue and it is always a jam packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you do get your times to me in good time if you have something you would like included. Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine.

Best wishes,

A truck drivers breakfast most mornings and still stones lighter! Busy lives mean at times we all reach for that sugary snack to curb the hunger between meals, but truck driving meant Darren struggled to find sensible, healthy meal options and two for one offers at the checkout for chocolate bars proved too much to resist!! All too often motorway service food or the nearest takeaway were staples of his diet and before long the weight piled on. Darren and his fiancée Karen, went to Las Vegas to get married and both, content and comfortable with each other, they got married being the heaviest they had ever been. Mainly due to enjoying life to the full, by over indulging on food, alcohol and life! – a habit they’d got into, long before the wedding! The weight meant being unfit too. A short walk to see the rim of the Grand Canyon was a struggle and once home, Darren couldn’t even walk the mile to a friend’s house without his hips and knees aching!! This proved to be that all important moment of reality that kick started them both into thinking that if they didn’t do something about their weight now it would only get worse. It was Karen that persuaded Darren to join Slimming World and before walking through those doors he remembers feeling extremely nervous and reluctant. Worried about being the only male and worried that he would get embarrassed about his weight and body shape. All Darren found was a warm welcome, friendly faces that didn’t judge and group members keen to share their own successes and tips to help him on his journey. All personal details were kept confidential and that all important, ‘Weigh in’ was discreet and encouraging – no matter what the scales said! Learning about Food Optimising, meant he could eat all the foods he loved. Because it’s not a diet, with sensible swaps, the weight started to go. Darren could still have his, ‘Truckers breakfast’, just without the 2 rounds of white toast and switching the fried egg for poached or scrambled! Bacon instead of sausage was perfect, asking the 14 BAWTRY TODAY

chef to cut the fat off was always entertaining! The, ‘Fakeaways’ recipe book bought in class showed Darren how to make favourite take away meals like curries and Chinese, all quickly and easily – AND HEALTHIER! As the weight started to come off, the urge to move more came automatically. Karen and Darren started a couch to 5k running programme, at first even 30 seconds of light jogging was a huge effort. Now Darren runs up to 5 miles three times a week and has completed both the Retford and Worksop Half Marathons! With the desire to help others like himself, Darren trained as a Slimming World Consultant and is launching his new group on Thursday 3rd November:New Hall, Station Road, Bawtry 3.30pm and 5.30pm Contact Darren 07772 464983 Before

Community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, Thank goodness our awful few weeks passed without any fatalities. Even though we worked with two local vets it is still unclear why our dogs became ill. Our kennel assistants and volunteers worked tirelessly keeping further infection at bay. We are now back to work as usual with no lasting effects. effects Our vets bills were well over £3,500 and we had a huge appeal for donations on our internet page. Donations came flooding in, thank you seems such a small gesture for such a large response, but without all of your donations we would have really struggled with this extra high bill. But THANK YOU all so much for all the support we have had from the most amazing people, you literally were life savers savers. Moving on now, all but 2 of our puppies have been adopted, but we have the most adorable kittens available now. It is a little late for kittens’ season as they usually appear in the spring when the days are longer, but obviously nature has turned upside down this year. If you would like to come along with a view to adopting them Penny our cattery Manager will be happy to have a chat and show you all the cats and kittens that are available to adopt. adopt We would all like to thank Johnjo Defty who ran the Vale of York Half Marathon on Sept the 11th. He raised a massive £560, this was his first half Marathon but completed it in good time. A fantastic achievement so well done. We are very grateful, we now think you need a bit of a rest before you start training for the next one!! Don't forget we have a shop in our reception area, so if your pooch needs a cosy coat as the cold days are coming this is the place to be. We have a lovely selection of hand knitted coats all sizes. Also dog toys, bowls, blankets and many more cat and dog paraphernalia paraphernalia. I have adopted another dog from Mayflower she is a cross Pointer and she has been a street dog in Cyprus, she has lived on the streets and latterly in a shelter in Cyprus for all of her 4 years. She has never lived in a home so as you y can imagine g I

Finding g a forever home was expecting a few teething problems and more than one or two puddles! However she is the cleanest most subservient beautiful girl ever. She has had to fight to survive and has lots of scars on her lovely face. She has also had her fair share of puppies. Well, no more, she has now been spayed she is also understanding a little English and learning her name. We already have a Spaniel that is becoming her best friend and 3 cats that she is taking absolutely no notice of. I did imagine the worse, cats climbing up the curtains and swinging from light fittings to keep away from her. However it hasn't happened, it is all quite harmonious, which is a bonus. She is enjoying the routine and cuddling into her new basket in an evening. The only thing that does worry her are loud noises (bonfire night is approaching eek !!) and she is also frightened of children. Which leads you to believe she could have been teased or badly treated by them. But she does love grown ups and other dogs. It will take a while for her confidence to grow but watch this space for more. more If you are thinking of adopting a cat or dog please come along and speak to us we will point you in the right direction and make sure the dog or cat you are choosing is the right one for you you. Many thanks to everyone that has left towels and blankets in my garage they will come in very handy now that the chilly weather is around the corner. corner Last but not least please remember to keep your cats in on the run up to Bonfire night and the night itself as the loud bangs seems to go on forever. Keep your animals safe as it can be a terrifying time for all animals. animals Our telephone number if you need us is 01302 711330. Hope p to see yyou soon

I live in the office but it gets very lonely here when the staff go home. I wish I could have a home of my own with a family to love. I need to be an only pet as I’m not very good around other dogs. I don’t like cats or other small furries at all. That way I can have all the fuss and don’t have to share.... Any children in my new home would ideally be over 10 as I can get very boisterous at times. I travel well and walk very nicely on the lead Please come and visit me during our opening times Just ask to meet me - I'll be waiting Roxy x

Name: Brandy Female Sex: Date into care: 29/05/2015 Age on arrival: ? Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: No Lived with children: ? I am a very excitable girl that loves plenty of cuddles and affection. I have not had a great start to life at all so am in desperate need of a loving family to show me what it feels like to be loved and cared for. I have to walk with a muzzle in wooded areas as I try to pull at branches. I have not had much socialisation with dogs so will need some training. A loyal companion through and through. I do travel well. I have lived with older children.

community Garden View

Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between n neighbours over this very issue down the yearss and the main cause of aggro seems to be the e humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy y fencing panels over the years, there really iss nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an n otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and d cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen n IRU IUXLW DQG ČľRZHUV IRRG Even the much maligned Leyland cypress hass D SDUW WR SOD\ ΖW FDQ SURYLGH D EULOOLDQW EXÎ?HUU DJDLQVW WUDÉ?F QRLVH IRU D VWDUW DQG ZLOO VFUHHQ unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife.

I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. p Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake I am looking forward to a busy Novem mber with Visit Bawtry’s Christmas event and th he first Bawtry and Austerfield Heritage weekend. Again, it has been a busy month responding to individual concerns that residents have contacted t d me about b t directly as well as responding to issues that are affecting Bawtry and Austerfield. TRAFFIC, SPEEDING AND INCREASES IN LORRY MOVEMENTS I have mentioned in my previous updates that DMBC had promised to conduct a traffic survey on both Doncaster Road and Station Road once the 20mph scheme outside the school was implemented. I was pleased to see that the monitoring tubes have been put on both roads and will remain for a month to monitor both speed and volume. In my last discussions with Highways, they maintained that Doncaster Road is a natural 40mph road and the survey therefore would look at the speed that cars were doing. I expect to have the results of the survey in December so will include them in my January update. I was informed that the crossing patrol man had been experiencing problems with cars not stopping and I have asked the police to monitor this. GRASS CUTTING AND TOWN CENTRE IMPROVEMENTS I was pleased to see a number of improvements made over the last few weeks with weeds removed, the flower beds on Dukes Terrace and Doncaster Road cleared and the green triangles tidied at the top of Station Road. Unfortunately the cutting of edges on approach roads into the town was not done after a litter pick which made the edges look even worse but this is now being addressed by the Street Scene Team. I am working with the Town Council to plan for next year’s planting to make some long term improvements to flower beds and pots which will be of benefit to both residents and visitors. COMMUNITY LITTER PICK I tried to organise the first litter pick in June but this had to be cancelled so I was pleased that after discussions at the September Bawtry Residents Group meeting a community litter pick was arranged for 16 October. We had the support of the Street Scene Team. If this is successful I will arrange a monthly session as other areas do so we can complement the excellent work that the town centre team do on behalf of Bawtry Town Council, but covering all roads in Bawtry.

DMBC Councillor

30MPH SIGNS IN AUSTERFIELD I was pleased to get an update from DMBC Highways Team about the moving of these signs to extend the 30mph zone in Austerfield. Austerfield. It will require a traffic regulation order which I have mentioned before can take up to 6 months but once these changes are implemented this will make the area safer for pedestrians and drivers. I am aware that speeding continues in the area and it is one of many sites that I ask South Yorkshire Police to monitor. AUSTERFIELD SHOW I was delighted to attend the Village Show and enjoyed being one of the judges and learnt a lot from the more experienced judges about what a Victoria Sponge cake should taste and look like! The standard of the entries was very high and it was good to see residents who hadn’t ventured into the Community Centre before, attending the Show. The work of the volunteers who run the centre is fantastic and they are always looking at putting more on for residents. BAWTRY AND AUSTERFIELD HERITAGE WEEKEND This is a first for Bawtry and Austerfield and I hope as many residents as possible get involved. Details are provided elsewhere, but please do let me know what you think of what has been arranged and any ideas for activities for next year. NOVEMBER SURGERY Unfortunately I am not going to be able to do a surgery in November but they will start again in December. I am very happy to meet with residents at any time, day or evening, so if you have a problem, concern, suggestion or question please do get in touch. Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael. blake@doncaster.gov.uk As I say every month, I have so many things going on, but can’t include them all so please do contact me. If you are a member of a group I would be very happy to come along to one of your meetings Kind nd regards

Rachael

Bawtry Town own Council - November 2016 This newsletter summariises business done in Council meetings on 13th September mber and 11th October. Market Hill car park The Council is continuing to negotiate with Excel, which manages the car park, to “roll backâ€? the charging hours to those which applied between 2007 and 2010 – i.e. 08.00 to 18.00 Monday – Saturday (free in the evenings) and free on Sundays and Bank Holidays. However any changes at this stage requires the consent of both parties. After lengthy negotiations Excel have provisionally agreed to a 3-month trial to assess the costs and HÎ? HFWV RI D FKDQJH +RZHYHU LQ OLJKW RI WKH likely loss of revenue, it appears the Council would be required to compensate Excel for their lost revenue. Unfortuately if this cannot be negotiated further, with each party bearing their own costs, the losses to the Council may be too great for a trial to proceed. We hope to provide a small taxi rank on Market Hill, to operate late on weekend evenings, ready in time for Christmas. Some residents are troubled by a certain amount of noise and rowdiness at these times, and it is believed that this might be caused by people who, having Č´ QLVKHG WKHLU HYHQLQJ LQ %DZWU\ KDYH D OHQJK\ wait for transport home – We hope that a taxi rank may help alleviate any problems. New Pavilion at the Memorial Sports Ground Following the signing of the lease of the Memorial Sports Ground to BARS, the project has progressed such that it is understood that building works will commence next month. A copy of the Lease is available on BTC’s website – www.bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk

Crime in Bawtry Inspector Payling, who manages the Doncaster East Local Policing team (based as Rossington) attended the meeting on 52 BAWTRY TODAY

11th October. He hopes to attend around every three months in the future. He gave an overview of recent crime trends in Bawtry, highlighting increases in burglary (non-dwelling – ii.e. e mostly sheds and garages) and thefts from motor vehicles. On many occasions property was left insecure by the owners and therefore the Police are encouraging residents to be diligent and not to leave valuables in their vehicle . He was unaware of the recent very high levels of assaults in Bawtry reported in the Free Press and undertook to look into this and report back.

Neighbourhood Plan There was a Consultation Event on 6th October for Businesses and Landowners, and another is planned for 19th October, for Community Groups.

Gainsborough Road toilets With the exception of the disabled toilet, these are now closed, as a result of repeated instances of theft, damage and defacement. Several business premises in Bawtry now advertise free use of their toilets by the public. The Gainsborough Road toilets are owned by DMBC, but it would not appear DMBC has any use for them. We will investigate the possibility of BTC acquiring them, for storage use – for equipment used by our handymen. At

present we rent a garage for this purpose.

Litter bins As part of our plans to try to improve what Bawtry looks like, we want to ensure ZH KDYH VXÉ? FLHQW OLWWHU ELQV DURXQG the town. We would invite suggestions from residents and businesses about where new bins should be sited. TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696
