Welcome to the

September 2017 edition

“There is always something to be grateful for.“

Unknown Author

I hope that you have enjoyed the summer months and that September brings us an Indian summer to extend the season. At the time of writing I have just returned from my summer break, a new experience for me, spending it on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean, visiting a new town nearly every day instead of my normal fortnight on a sunlounger! Pisa, Venice and Kotor in Montenegro were highlights for me. We once again have every reason to be thankful, as we flew home from Barcelona just a few hours before the recent attack, and the family we left behind sightseeing in Barcelona were fortunately a short distance away, and remained safe, although were unable to return to their hotel until the following day.

The date of our return coincided with A level results day, and I am pleased to report that my daughter will be flying the nest in a few weeks as she starts the next chapter of her life at University studying Performing Arts. Anyone who knows her will appreciate that this is a route she is well suited to! The October issue will be delivered to you late September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th September. Enjoy September, and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine.

Best wishes,

community Community Hi Everyone, We can’t believe how the summer is flying by, and hope everyone has enjoyed their summer break. As always it has been a busy time for rescue and we are full to overflowing, luckily lots of dogs that come to us are happy to share a kennel, which is great as it means we can double up and take in more dogs than usual.

We have lots of lovely very cute small dogs and also larger energetic dogs in our Sanctuary which is great as we have a variation to suit all families. Could everyone please be aware that we do not re-home dogs with families with children under 5, unless we have lots of history on your chosen dog and it has lived with children previously. Our resident office dog Buster who is a very large beautiful boy decided one evening to enjoy chewing 3 leather collars that were in the office. He has never previously had any history of destroying anything and we hope it was a one off. Unfortunately, this lovely boy had to have an operation he’s fine now and we await the invoice for this operation with bated breath!! Lots of us have been fundraising outside Marks and Spencer Wheatley Hall Road every other weekend some of us bag packing and others outside with some of our canine friends they

love all the attention that they are given from the Saturday shoppers and I think it brightens people’s day seeing our lovely dogs and giving them some attention. Last Friday evening we hosted a Ladies Night in the reception at our Sanctuary. It turned out to be such a fantastic evening and a great big thank you to Jess who sold Forever Living Products which are all Aloe Vera based, Gemma from Lou Lou Designs selling very creative and beautiful picture frames, Sharon and Bobbi from Finishing Touches who are resident on Tickhill Garden Centre site, they sold the most super jewellery, handbags, scarves and much more, lastly Dawn from Party Lite candle company, the aroma from these candles goes on forever. So a big thank you for making the night special. Not forgetting all the lovely people that took their time to attend, it would not have been a success without you. Who-ever baked the amazing cakes also a thank you. We raised over £200 and enjoyed a brilliant evening. Another fund raiser will be a Race Night held at the Scout Head Quarters in Tickhill on the 30th Sept, please come along and support us it will be a fantastic evening. Tickets are £6 to include pie and peas there will also be a bar on the night with raffle prizes too. Phone either number to book tickets Mags 07969203206 or Janice 07590455340 or the Sanctuary 01302711330 and leave a message. This will be a fantastic evening so book your tickets early. We were very lucky to be chosen as one of the Rescues to appear

Narrow Lane, Bawtry.

Finding a forever home on the Chanel 4 Animal Rescue Live programme it was on every night of the week and featured 4 of our dogs. One dog a staffy cross that had been in our rescue for a while and had just found a home was featured in her new home enjoying her new garden and playing which was a dream to see. They also showed Benji who was looking for a home he is a small terrier type but does have a few issues, which was very funny as he was an absolute star on the programme. Inka the greyhound also received a lot of interest and a home from the TV coverage. The people on the programme gave us some amazing comments and it was such a feather in our cap to be chosen to feature in this prestigious programme. If you would like to adopt a dog or cat please come along and speak to us, we will point you in the right direction towards a pet that will suit your lifestyle. If you need help or assistance with a pet please call our number 01302 711330 we will be happy to help. Bye for now

Dear Friends, “Give us today our daily breadâ€? is our discussion for the month of September. This topic coincides with harvest. Bread is a staple food in many countries in the world. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Community HOW YOGA CAN GIVE YOU MORE ENERGY AND PREVENT, REDUCE OR EVEN REVERSE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF AGEING On a scale of 0-10 with 10 being “very good”, how would you describe your general fitness, your energy levels and your eating habits right now? Are your daily habits helping, or hindering your sense of well-being? Are you in mid-life or later years and becoming one of many who find yourself thinking that you have to expect aches and pains, and health niggles the older you get? At 65, I’m no spring chicken myself – but I know that practising yoga has meant I am fitter than some people half my age, and that it is possible to maintain our health for far longer applying some of the yoga principles and techniques to our lives. It doesn’t have to be difficult. You don’t have to bend like a pretzel! It doesn’t matter what age, size, shape or level of fitness you’re at – in some cases, it doesn’t even matter if you’re recovering from an injury. Yoga can support a move towards better health wherever you are starting from – and the research into its benefits is growing all the time. But the truth is, often yoga is portrayed as for the young and bendy; you might have tried a class

and found it was just too fast for you to pick up the movements, and ended up feeling yoga just isn’t for you. Nothing could be further from the truth. If your score to the question at the beginning of this article was a 7 or less, maybe there are some simple things you could do which could improve your score and your overall sense of well-being as you age – and I’d like to suggest yoga might well be part of the answer. I don’t care whether you buy a video or book or go to classes by other teachers…..just give yoga a go because I promise you, on as little as 15 minutes a day you can start to feel better. The one thing you must NOT do is stop moving, or allow the not so helpful habits you might be practising which are jeopardizing your fitness levels, to allow you to slip any further down that score card! If you’d like more information about classes and the September yoga day retreat, which focuses on yoga, our diet and how we can slow down the ageing process, please find my contact details below.

Why the Employment Tribunal Fees Ruling may not be so simple The new ruling that employment tribunal fees are illegal and should be refunded to everyone charged them since 2013, may not be simple for the Employment Tribunals Service to apply, according to Jones & Co Solicitors. With Britain’s highest court ruling that the fees contravene both EU and UK law and are discriminatory against women, the process of refunding the thousands of people who have paid the fees, and dealing with those who would have taken a claim if the fees had not been in place, could be complicated, according to Andrew Bevan, Partner and employment law ex expert at the North Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire laaw firm. The ruling requ uires the Government tto refund up to £32 million n to people charged for ttaking their claims to trib bunal since July 2013, wh hen the fees were introdu uced. Unison, the UK’s larggest trade union, won tthe case after arguing thatt the fees of up to £1,200 d discriminated against workers. The Ministry of Justice has said the Gov vernment will

take immediate steps to stop charging employment tribunal fees and refund those who have paid. Andrew Bevan said: “I believe the Employment Tribunals Service has its’ work cut out. Thought will need to be given to an immediate rewriting of the tribunal rules, and a reprogramming of the online Claim Form system. “The Supreme Court made it clear that all fees paid between 2013 and now will have to be refunded but this is easier said than done. Many successful claims will have had fees ordered to be paid by the respondent, or the employer, and there will probably need to be a manual trawl of all decided cases. This will take some time to sort out. “I also question what will happen to everyone who chose not to bring a claim because of the fees. Will tribunals be amenable to the argument that it was not reasonably practicable to bring a claim when a claimant was significantly impeded from doing so by an unlawful fees regime? Or that following today’s decision it is just and equitable to extend time for bringing a claim? Whatever happens in due course will need to be well thought through and offer an appropriate way forward for claimants and respondents. “I think it is unlikely the fees regime will be abolished entirely. It is most probable that the government will issue a consultation paper and then bring in a new fees regime, with fees at a lower level or involve a fee payable by the employer when the employer lodges its defence.”

Beautiful Blackberries Autumn’s scent is sweet DQG VRXU 7KHUH LV D GH¿ QLWH tang in the air which indicates that summer is drawing to a close. Don’t be sad though, autumn has its compensations, especially at harvest time: picking early apples, cold from the tree and dappled with dampness is one of life’s little pleasures. But if you don’t grow fruit in your own plot you don’t have to miss out, just look to the hedgerows. As kids, we used to dig out an empty ice cream tub and go blackberrying in the autumn. It seems to have died-out a bit as a family pastime but that means there’s more for the rest of us! Don’t worry about breaking any laws. If the fruit is growing in the wild it is anyone’s for the taking.

I encourage you to plant a blackberry bush this year and in the future, you will enjoy one of the purest pleasures autumn can offer. Happy gardening.

But why stop at wild blackberries. How about growing your own? It’s very simple. My dad used to grow them over two discarded wrought-iron gates he found in a skip! You don’t need anything quite that elaborate. Rig up a simple post and wire frame. Two 2m / 6-foot posts knocked into the ground 2m / 6 foot apart and joined together with horizontal strands of galvanised wire spaced about 45cm / 18 inches apart will do. You can also grow them over sheds and walls. Plant the blackberry plant in manure, or compost-enriched soil at the base of the frame and gradually train the plant up it, tying in the shoots as they grow. It will spread to cover the

Bawtry Town Council - SEPTEMBER 2017 Extraordinary Meeting.- Market Hill Like most town and parish councils, Bawtry Town Council was in recess in August and did not hold a general monthly meeting. Members did however meet for an extraordinary meeting on the 8th August to consider repair works to the footpath at Market Hill. Members did agree to undertake emergency repairs at the July meeting, subject to the necessary consents being obtained. However, members revisited the extent of repairs in light of new information regarding a long-term solution being proposed by DMBC. BTC is aware that a permanent solution will take some time to reach however and therefore have agreed to meet with DMBC to discuss a scheme that would enable the footpath to be formally adopted. This will include discussion of any conservation and ownership issues and any likely contribution from DMBC. Members additionally considered the current parking arrangements at Market Hill with a view to considering an early consensual conclusion to the existing contract with Excel. Members however declined to put forward an offer at this stage but the parking provision working group will be investigating the logistics and costs of the Town Council running a car park in the future.

Community Forum Event A Community Forum meeting is being held on the 6th September from 7-9pm at The Crown Hotel. The meeting is informal and offers an opportunity for residents to attend and meet BTC councillors to discuss what we do, and local issues they would like us to tackle. Local representatives from the Bawtry Residents Group, BARS and the Bawtry Retailers Association are also scheduled to attend and discuss the activities they undertake. Please come along and get involved.

sites in Bawtry. When approved, any agreed sites will be used for housing development over the next 15 years and may include green belt land. Although a target of 105 units was set by DMBC, the initial proposed sites looked to achieve around 30 units. The proposals may now be amended however and the Town Council are therefore awaiting further information from DMBC. DMBC have not yet been able to advise when any revised plans will be available for consultation. When the final proposals are made public the Town Council strongly encourage local residents to review the consultation and have their say. This is an opportunity for local residents to comment and influence where they would like to see development in Bawtry over the next 15 years.

War Memorial Working Group - Update Relocation of the War Memorial on Great North Road to the Community Library is currently being progressed although grant funding will be needed to complete the scheme. The Council is currently discussing its plans with Austerfield Parish Council as several of those named on the war memorial were residents of Austerfield.

Council Meetings & Business The next Council meeting is on Tuesday 12th September at 7pm at the New Hall Residents and Businesses are welcome to attend BTC meetings and there is a 15 minute public discussion period for specific questions to be put to Council. Please come along and get involved.

A full report will be in next month’s Bawtry Today article

Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors

As we write this in the middle of August it has been a good week with some of our long standing requests for a range of improvements being agreed at last. As Rachael has learnt over the last 2 and a half years and Mick is quickly realising, tenacity has to be one important quality of a councillor if we are going to get the improvements that residents have asked for. A quick update of progress this month is provided below. Rachael is returning to having her surgeries at the coffee morning – 2nd Friday of the month from 10am. Do call in for a chat, to let her know about any concerns, any suggestions or questions. Parking Concerns – Pemberton and Top Street/Doncaster Road I have been contacted by many residents over the last 2 years who have concerns about the inconsiderate parking on Pemberton Grove and on Top Street at the junction of Doncaster Road. For both places, residents were concerned about how the parking was causing a safety problem for both drivers and pedestrians. After many requests Highways have this week issued a consultation on imposing restrictions. At Pemberton, the proposal is to have double yellow lines going right to the gate; for Top Street, double yellow lines will prevent parking near the entrance to Towngate. Details about the consultation are available on the Doncaster Council website, or do get in touch with

54 BAWTRY TODAY

us for more information. As I have explained before with these consultations, from the start of the consultation to having the yellow lines painted can take over 6 months and that is assuming that there aren’t any objections. Hopefully these proposals will be supported and make our junctions safer for everyone. Austerfield – extension of 30mph signs This again is an improvement that should have been achieved by March but for a variety of reasons the work hasn’t been done. The problems have been the power supply which requires the involvement of the power suppliers and DMBC can request it but are not given a date when the work will be done. We now have a date of 29 August for some of the work that DMBC is in control of to start and we are still waiting for details of further work that will need to be completed. Extra safety measures on Green Park Residents contacted me because they were concerned about some footpaths on Green Park and how cars were accessing footpaths. Following discussions with the Highway Department, an extra bollard will be installed to prevent misuse of the footpath Surgeries Bawtry Community Library Coffee Morning – from 10am – 12 on 8 September Rachael Tel: 07976896563 Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Mick Tel: 07758089737 Email: mick.cooper@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading our update – please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
