Welcome to the

September 2019 edition

Today

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” John F. Kennedy Back to school time again already! Good luck to all those starting school or nursery for the first time, moving to a new school, heading off to College, University, Apprenticeship or first job. The holidays do seem to have gone quickly to me, but then they always do! This year I was lucky to enjoy a break in Croatia, where 14 of us enjoyed the amazing coastline and scenery, swam in the pool and sea, paddle boarded, pedaloed, took boat trips and enjoyed some great food and drink, as well spending lots of time relaxing and making some great memories. Back in July I took up the challenge to complete a Macmillan Mighty Hike - 26miles of the Thames path. I had just 2 weeks to prepare for the walk and raise a minimum of £250 for Macmillan. Fortunately, lots of dog walking, dancing, cricket and kettlebell training over recent months meant I was fit enough to complete the challenge, despite the limited preparation time. What I hadn’t fully appreciated was how long it takes to walk that distance, and how much my feet would hurt afterwards! A big thank you to Owen James at All for You Physio for providing a pre-walk treatment to ensure I was in good shape, and massive thanks to all those who sponsored me. £555 +gift aid has gone to Macmillan and my Just Giving page remains open if anyone else would like to donate to this amazing charity https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/paula-mickley Whatever you have been doing this summer I hope you got the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. The October issue will be delivered to you very late September, if you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 13th September. Enjoy September and I will be back in a months’ time with your October magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

CAPITAL COMMUNITY VASE Come on down to Tickhill Cricket Club from noon on Saturday 8th September to support a charity cricket 20:20 match. Entry is free and there will be a mega raffle on the day. Each player in the TFG Capital Community Vase is sponsored by a local business. The two teams are generously sponsored by HSR Law and Polypipe. This is the third consecutive charity cricket match organised by Doncaster Business for the Community (DB4C); the first time the match will be played in Tickhill. According to Tickhillian Richard Clarke, “We are delighted to support The Hygiene Bank and the Create a Dream Foundation with proceeds raised through the cricket match. The Hygiene Bank supplies soaps and other hygiene products to food banks and homeless groups. The Create a Dream Foundation is a local charity granting wishes for terminally ill children, such as trips to Lego Land and Disney World Paris.”

Dozens of charities have been sponsored to date by DB4C. The charity recently donated £5,000 to the Children’s Air Ambulance from funds raised during the Crown Hotel Bawtry Business Community Cup, held at Keepmoat Stadium. DB4C also organises a black tie ball, the Diamond Ball, taking place at Bawtry Hall on 28th September.

COMMUNITY

MISSON & SPRINGS WI

T

Should we meet? Shouldn’t we meet? It’s the annual dilemma for our July meeting when we know that many of our members will be away on holiday - but for those left behind? Wimbledon’s over, the Tour de France is over, Love Island has finished, so why not! We didn’t arrange for a speaker but enjoyed an excellent evening in our own company, happy that the earlier thunderstorms had passed and just careful to avoid the puddles as we came into the community centre. It was a pick’n’mix of activities - learning how to crochet, knitting with beads, mindfulness colouring or, in the absence of our regular refreshment team, ensuring that the teapot was kept full and the washing up done. At the end of the evening from members and guests alike - a unanimous “I really enjoyed that”. For our next meeting in August, we’ll be back in business with a return visit from Rachel Barrowcliffe and we are already looking forward to her sound advice on what we should be doing in our summer garden. The new term in September will see us learning about Yorkshire Seaside Architecture with Sheffield historian, Mike HIgginbottom. Do join us on the last Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson; you will be made most welcome - either just turn up or phone our secretary, Lynda Redfern on 07796 975578 for any further information.

BUSINESS OSKI’S Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food and drink awards, has announced its stars of 2019. Out of 12,772 products sent

in from over 100 different countries, Oski’s, who are based in Bawtry, were awarded a 1-star Great Taste award, which means judges dubbed it a food that delivers fantastic flavour for its Parknie. The unique bake was developed by the Oski’s team and brings together their Grandmother’s traditional Yorkshire Parkin recipe with their own chocolate brownie recipe to create a beautifully balanced flavour. Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, buyers, retailers and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind tasting by hundreds of judges. Kate Brown of Oski’s explains:

“When we came up with the idea for the Parknie we knew we had something good on our hands and so decided to put it to the test by entering our first ever food awards. It’s such a personal product to us as it uses both our tried and tested brownie recipe as well as our Grandmother’s Parkin recipe so it was nerve-wracking putting it up for such a prestigious award but we are over the moon that the judges loved it too! The timing of the award announcement was perfect too as it fell on Yorkshire Day so meant we could celebrate our Yorkshire inspired bake in true Yorkshire style…with a cup of Yorkshire Tea!

LIFESTYLE

Dress for your Shape When it comes to looking good, it’s not your size or shape that matters, it’s the fit of your garments. Wearing the right clothes shouldn’t be about following the latest fashion trends; it should be about choosing what actually suits you and your body proportions to make you feel comfortable and confident. Women come in all shapes - the key is to know your proportions, and use fashion to accentuate your best features! When we dress, we are trying to present an image that is pleasing to the eye. We want to receive those compliments that tell us that we look great, because then, and only then, will we believe that we do look great! This allows us to feel good about ourselves.

are more along the lines of whether or not it will look good on you, without thinking about how will it accentuate your body shape so that it does look good on you. Colour is an important feature, and how we display it is the most important aspect.

Perhaps one of the most important reasons for having difficulty while selecting an outfit from your wardrobe would be the simple fact that the wardrobe is lacking in outfits that flatter your body shape. How many times have you played the “try on as many outfits as possible in 30 minutes” game while looking for the perfect outfit to wear, only to be left with the same decision and a mountain of clothes to put away? The actual problem is not that you have nothing to wear; it is that you have nothing in the wardrobe that flatters your figure/ colouring.

The aim should be to take the attention away from the aspect of our body that is the least pleasing to us and place it elsewhere. In order to accomplish this, you need to consider your body shape, decide which feature you wish to accent more, and discover how to accomplish that.

Here are some helpful tips:

Those of you who are top heavy and have a full bust will want to draw the eye to the lower portion of your physique. Wear a bolder color/pattern from the waist down, and a softer/plain colour above.

So, for many, the decision about “what to wear” is made as you purchase. Exactly how should you choose your outfits? Let’s start first by exploring how you currently go about selecting your clothing.

If you are thin everywhere, you will want to accentuate your figure by adding dimension. You can do this by choosing outfits that are loose and flowing, and by wearing horizontal patterns.

Many ladies are drawn first by the colors and patterns. Your thoughts

If you are bottom heavy and have full hips, you will want to select clothing

14

that draws the eye to the top of your body. You can accomplish this by wearing a splash of color or a bold print on the upper part of your figure, and a solid, darker color below the waist. For those of you who are wide everywhere, you will want to stay away from bold patterns or prints. Draw the eye to the upper portion of your torso to create a focal point. Those of you who have the envied luck to have a perfect hourglass figure have the easiest path of all. Also, remember that simple clothing that fits well is far better than fancier clothing that just “doesn’t look right.”

The Arts Society Dukeries’ latest Trail of Discovery is at St Wilfrid’s Church in Scrooby, North Nottinghamshire.

The village may be small, but it is renowned, especially in the USA, for being the home of William Brewster, the Pilgrim Father. He sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 and founded the Plymouth Colony in New England, but in the early years of the 17thcentury Brewster’s home, Scrooby Manor House, became the meeting place for the Separatist Church. The church contains three benches, commonly known as the Brewster Pews, made up of carved 16th century bench ends. The local Brownies were the first children to complete the trail at the recent launch at the church. They were welcomed by the vicar, Rev Jackie Mckenna, and joined by members of The Arts Society Dukeries and Scrooby Parish Councillors for a most enjoyable and informative evening. The trail was printed with support from Bassetlaw District Council. For more information on The Arts Society Dukeries please see theartssociety.org/dukeries

BAWTRY HEALTH WALK

T

On our last walk in July around Bawtry Hall and the Reservoir we saw hanging black plastic bags in the bushes! The Bawtry Health Walk simply can't understand why

irresponsible dog walkers leave their dogs deposits like this, when it's biodegradable to leave it on the floor if they are not taking it home like all good dog walkers do!

Our next walk will be Tuesday September 3rd and every Tuesday, at 1pm in front of the Bawtry Methodist Church with a cuppa made in the new kitchen. For more information please contact Sue on 07909 033577

BRUCE’S HAPPY TAIL

ANNUAL PENSIONERS LUNCH

T

T

Bruce, the American Bulldog, had a tough start in life, until he was rescued by the Doncaster, Rotherham and District Branch of the RSPCA. Originally brought to the animal centre by an inspector as part of a welfare case, Bruce’s skin was in a terrible state. He was a lovely, affectionate and playful dog who loved people, long strolls in the paddock and playing with balls – he could certainly give Lionel Messi a run for his money! Despite being in such discomfort with his skin condition, he was a gentle and affectionate dog. After waiting for almost a year, he finally got a lucky break. A family arrived at the Animal Centre and fell in love with Bruce and offered him the forever home he deserved. Bruce is just one story – 890 animals were rehomed from the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre last year. The Branch’s mission is to rehabilitate and re-home vulnerable animals and this work relies on kind donations from the public and local businesses. Bruce’s story took place because of the support received from a variety of sources. The four RSPCA shops are a vital source of income (Maltby, Bawtry, Rossington and Thorne), and raise awareness of the Centre. Every purchase and donation helps the Branch to continue vital rehabilitation and rehoming work. Other ways to help include volunteering some of your time or sponsoring rescue animals through the Safe Haven programme. At the Animal Centre there is a pet supplies store. The Branch also provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets.

Bawtry

Residents Group The main topic discussed at last month’s Bawtry Residents Group meeting was crime prevention with the guest speaker being Eamonn Larkin Crime Reduction Officer with South Yorkshire police.

He informed the group of the best possible ways to keep our properties secure especially with respect to window and door security. This message was reinforced by David Bodman who had brought various door locks and window locks for residents to look at and he also outlined their various safety feature. David is the owner of a local business supplying windows and doors and operates out of Station Road Industrial Estate. He has offered the residents of Bawtry a free safety check, he can be contacted on 07770 441665 or at www.davidbodman.co.uk. The residents were also informed about the on-going problem of persistent crime within our town, with the latest figures showing a total of 33 crimes being reported in June. These figures also indicate that burglary and other thefts were the main issues being reported. It was also highlighted that numerous retailers in our town had also been targeted by thieves, especially around the Courtyard and Market Hill areas of the town. Also at the meeting was Jerry Cooke the Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator for our area, Jerry is the liaison between the NHW and South Yorkshire

22

police, keeping all up to date with the happenings in the town. He reiterated again at the meeting the need for people, in all areas of the town to join the NHW to make Bawtry a safer place. The meeting was informed that unfortunately the town is suffering from an increase in drug taking and anti-social behaviour. There is evidence of this activity spread throughout the town including the local Cemetery being used for both the dealing and taking of drugs. We at the BRG are so grateful to Jerry for doing such a great job running the NHW, but he needs the help of all the residents and retailers to continue, Jerry can be contacted at bedford@ btconnect.com for anyone wishing to join. Disappointingly only two of the local retailers attended the meeting. However, the Bawtry Retailers Association Chair undertook to liaise with Eamonn Larkin, Crime Reduction Officer with South Yorkshire police to organise another meeting with retailers. Also, at the meeting residents heard from Rachael Blake DMBC Ward Councillor for our area about the progress being made to ensure that the landlord fully complies with the planning application regarding the entrance to Sainsburys car park. Safety concerns about the entrance have been highlighted to DMBC by numerous residents, Bawtry Town Council and the BRG. Rachael also drew our attention to the

proposed 650 housing estate in Harworth, Bassetlaw planning application No 17/01728/out, this is a re-submission from 2017 both the BTC and DMBC have raised concerns regarding the building of this estate. It will have a major impact on the infrastructure of all the surrounding area including Bawtry. Councillor Alan Claypole (Chair of BTC) updated residents about the work the Council have been doing over the past couple of months including the relocation of the war memorial. Work on the relocation is due to start in the next two weeks. Councillor Claypole also stated that he was working in corporation with the BRA to try and ensure that more toilets (located in the town’s shops, restaurants and bars) should be available for both residents and visitors to use when visiting the town. Alan also reminded the group the success of the new vegetable stall soon to be located on market hill, will be down to residents and retailers, the more it is used the longer it will be in place instead of the proposed 3-year period. Just before we go, the first ever a BARS – AGM takes place at the end of August, a full update will be in the next edition of this Magazine.

The next BRG meeting is scheduled for Thursday the 26th Sept 2019, 7:30 pm in the Crown Hotel.

Richard.

WILDLIFE TRUST North Notts Local Group Talks

The new CEO of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust will give the opening lecture for the North Notts local group’s 2019 – 20 lecture series. Paul Wilkinson has been in post

T

since January 2019. He is nature conservationist who cares deeply about wildlife and has ambitious plans for the future of the wildlife of Nottinghamshire. He says, “Our natural world is under increasing pressure, and across the globe climate emergencies are being announced. At the same time, we know that there are many thousands of people, in Nottinghamshire alone, who love wildlife, and are, or would, do something to help protect it and set it on a path to recovery. We therefore need to mobilise more people than ever, around 1 in 4 from every walk of life, to take action and stand up for wildlife.” Paul will outline the Trusts’ vision for a Wilder Nottinghamshire, and how everyone can play a part in bringing it about. This meeting will be held in the Rural Learning Centre at the Idle Valley, North Road (A638), Retford DN22 8RQ on September 12 2019. The meeting starts at 7.30pm. Admission £2.50 includes refreshments. All welcome, including non-members. FOR MORE INFORMATION Phone Jan 01777 709974 or 07969180067 or email janwilliamson133@gmail.com If you would like to receive email updates of Local Group activities, please email Jan with your request.

WHO GIVES A HOOT? T

A catch-up from Wise Owl

Have I got news for you! Hooting on about the environment - mine and yours - has caught the attention of a human expert. This is what he told me: "Most people know that fracking results in chemical toxins being released. However, few are aware that radon-222 and radium-226, both highly dangerous radionuclides, are also released." "And why is that?" I asked. He replied: "Basically because the earth is radioactive. This is not a serious matter if the earth is left undisturbed. But fracking releases them to air and water." Does this concern you? Well, this area is earmarked for fracking...So it should! So come along to this FREE talk by Dr Ian Fairlie to find out more.

Wednesday 25th September Phoenix Theatre Bawtry DN10 6PT 7.15pm Free Dr Fairlie is an independent consultant on the environment and has advised the UKGovernment, European Parliament and local and regional governments. Recently he has written responses on the radioactive hazards associated with fracking and has spoken at many public meetings on this topic organised by frack free groups. See you there, Humans! MOVIE MAKERS

T

Started in the 1950's as Doncaster Cine Guild at the height of enthusiasm for cine film, Doncaster Movie Makers has evolved over the years, adapting to the changing film formats and equipment. But we are still essentially the same as the original members - keen, enthusiastic, amateur film makers, who help each other produce films and advise on new equipment and editing software. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced filmmaker, Doncaster Movie Makers exists to bring like-minded individuals together to share knowledge, have fun and explore the fascinating world of filmmaking - from script to screen. Or you might just like to watch films. We have demonstrations, visiting speakers and film competitions. As a Club we film local events and attractions, such as the Tour de Yorkshire. In 2019 we will be showing films on themes such as “What I did today” and holding competitions for films inspired by the word “AFT” and Music Videos.

The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are a team that participate in a high paced, non-contact and exciting version of American Football called ‘Flag Football’. American Flag Football is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. The aim of Flag Football is to stop the ball carrier from scoring by removing their flag. The Roosters compete in the Middle England Conference Division One League, and are ranked the number one team in that division in South Yorkshire. In the 2019 season, the Roosters finished 25th out of 40 teams in Division One in the United Kingdom. The team includes a mixture of both male and female players, aged 16 and over, from all over South Yorkshire and beyond. The team currently has 4 female players who represent Great Britain in Flag Football, and two male members who qualified through to the final stages of selection for Great Britain. The NuOla South Yorkshire Roosters are always looking to recruit new players to the team, whether they have experience of playing American Football or not. Just bring enthusiasm and a bottle of water, as the first three training sessions are free at Rossington, Doncaster; the Roosters training ground. COMMUNITY

DEAR FRIENDS

T

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT EVERY SEASON IN THE CHURCH HAS ITS HIGH POINTS In Autumn we celebrate harvest with festivals and feasting, giving thanks to God for his creation and his ongoing care of it. In Winter we celebrate Christmas and the birth of God’s son Jesus, born not in a palace to royal parents but in a stable to a poor, vulnerable young woman so that God can know exactly what it is like to be one of us and so that we can know God intimately. In Spring we celebrate Easter by walking with Jesus through the last days of his life on earth. We contemplate what it must feel like to be abandoned by your friends, betrayed by those closest to you, lied about in court, and manipulated by the powers that be, to be divine but yet to accept humiliation and torture to open for us the gates of heaven, forever. In Summer we are privileged to celebrate love, as this is the wedding season, when couples make vows and exchange rings surrounded by their loved ones in our beautiful sacred spaces. One of the most popular readings chosen by couples for their wedding ceremony in our churches is this, it is advice given in a letter to one of the first Christian churches from its founder, Saint Paul. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love knows no envy. Love does not boast. Love is not arrogant. Love is not rude. Love does not insist upon its rights. Love never becomes exasperated with another. Love never broods over imagined wrongs or slights. Love finds no pleasure in anything that is wrong. Love rejoices in the truth Love can bear anything. Love is completely trusting. Love never ceases to hope. 1 Corinthians 13: 4 - 7

34

If we substitute our own name in the place of love, we very quickly form a picture of how loving we actually are. Please try it, it surprised me to find how hard hearted I could be. To be this loving is a huge challenge. But we are not left to do this on our own. We are surrounded by friends and family to love and who love us. We live and work and socialise in communities which provide us with plenty of people to practice on. And we have a pattern for our loving in Jesus who put us first. If you would like to find out more about this amazing sacrifice, please visit us in one of our local churches, you will be made most welcome. Love and Peace

The Churches in this area are receiving some special visitors in September. For one long weekend, a team of northern Bishops and their helpers are coming to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. They are being led by Archbishop John Sentamu and their task is to help our churches to bring the good news of ONElife to every community large and small. There is programme of fantastic events throughout the weekend form Thursday 12th—Sunday 15th September with something for everyone young and old, and mostly with no charge. Archbishop Sentamu is encouraging us all to explore an adventuresome faith and join in with oneLIFE. We believe that at the heart of that ONElife is Jesus Christ who offers everyone abundant life in every possible way. Please see information about all the events during the weekend in this edition of Bawtry Today. Rev’d Jonathan Strickland & Rev’d Becky Hancock Vicar and Curate—The River Idle Benefice

COMMUNITY

HANSON QUARRY WALK T

Well, that was a scorcher!

A wonderful free walk organised by Misson Community Association was led by John Ingham (Hanson UK Principle Landscape Architect) in July on one of the hottest days of the year - it was sun hats, sun screen,

sun glasses and sun brollies to the rescue for a couple of hours - what an interesting walk and talk though and well worth it. Quite a major change from last years’ walk with many more species of birds breeding in the area, including the rare redshank. We were able to watch Canada Geese, Swans and Cygnets, and various other waterfowl and birds. Wild flowers have also taken up residence which helps the butterflies and bees, and various other insects…some of which wanted to cling to us! We were joined by John’s colleagues Janice Bradley from Notts Wildlife Trust, and Julie Williams of Hansons’ who gave us excellent information on the present and future developments of the

Habitat Management Plan, including two viewing platforms. There is only one more area of land to quarry, then we will be left with a marvellous wildlife habitat which will be managed by Hanson UK for at least 25 years. This is wonderful news and in only another year or two the area will be looking very well established indeed, with more variety of wildlife, plants and insects arriving to a safe haven on the ponds and streams. Another walk is planned for 2020 around the same time of year, obviously more information nearer the time. Many thanks to John and his colleagues who led the walk in their own time, and also to everyone who joined the event. It was still searing heat after the walk at seven in the evening, so it was off to the White Horse Inn, Misson for a cooling drink…well what else!

GAINSBOROUGH CHORAL SOCIETY’S TH 159

SEASON ABOUT TO COMMENCE T

Gainsborough Choral Society’s 159th season starts on Thursday 5th September when rehearsals for the exciting new season start.

The first concert is on Saturday 16th November and is Handel’s ever-popular Messiah. It is 10 years since the society last performed this work, so this is a wonderful opportunity to hear it again. Regular soloists Helen Winter, Jennifer Parker Timothy Langston and Terence Ayebare have been engaged. The second concert of the season is Carols for All, which takes place on Saturday 14th December and includes QEHS singers and instrumentalists. The final concert takes place on Saturday 28th March 2020 and is a performance of ‘Not the Messiah (he’s a very naughty boy)’, a comic oratorio written by Eric Idle and John du Prez, the composers behind the award-winning musical ‘Spamalot’, and based upon Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’. This will be the first performance of this work to be given by an amateur choir, so it is a considerable coup for the society to have secured the permissions to undertake this challenging work. For this concert, the society will be augmented by The City of Lincoln Male Voice Choir. The soloists from the November concert will again be performing and will be joined by Trevor Fenton, and Simon Nicholson – who

42

played King Arthur in a recent Lincoln production of ‘Spamalot’. (‘Not the Messiah’ is presented through special arrangements with Theatrical Rights Worldwide.) All concerts take place in All Saints’ Church, Gainsborough, DN21 2JR at 7.30 p.m. and are accompanied by the Lincoln Pro Musica Orchestra, all under the baton of Musical Director Richard Green. The Society always welcomes new members and anyone interested in joining should contact the secretary, Deirdre Speed, on 07710 535725 or email info@gainsboroughcs.co.uk , or just come along to the first rehearsal on Thursday 5th September at Queen Elizabeth High School, Morton Terrace, Gainsborough, DN21 2ST The Society runs a popular Patrons Scheme that gives not only a large discount on the normal ticket price but also offers priority booking of reserved seats. An application form can be found on the society’s website. For more information see: website: www.gainsboroughcs.co.uk or Facebook page: www.facebook.com/Gainsborough-ChoralSociety-270847546262604/

Lions Eye Health Programme Working to Save Sight

Globally there are 253 million people who are blind or have moderate to severe distance vision impairment (MSVI). 1.1 billion have near-vision impairment simply because they don’t have a pair of glasses. 75% of all blindness and MSVI is avoidable. 89% of people with visual impairment live in developing countries. Lions from all over the world support various international projects. We should not forget the two million plus people in the UK living with sight loss, that’s around one person in 30. They don’t all have guide dogs, and/ or a white cane, or wear dark glasses. The majority of these people are just like you and me, but don’t see so well. It is estimated that the official number of people registered can be multiplied by 3 or 4. We are happy to promote World Sight Day, 10th October to highlight the need for all of us to have our eyes tested regularly.

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS

RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Your DMBC Councillors

I always talk about what a busy month it has been but the last few weeks have certainly been the busiest ever since 2015 when I was first elected to be one of your ward councillors. There is so much to update you on and issues that you need to be involved in, I have tried to summarise them into Planning issues that are going to affect you Transport issues that your views are wanted on What do you want for Bawtry and Austerfield – opportunities to give your views Highways issues, repairs, hedges, crime and re-lining A wonderful initiative by a 16 year old to reduce loneliness in the Town Planning – please respond, as this will affect you! There are a number of planning applications that are not in Doncaster but in Nottinghamshire that will impact on Bawtry, so you sending in your objection is important. In Barnby Dunn, Hansons are planning to have movements from the quarry to the quarry in Auckley with lorries coming through Bawtry. The company’s own traffic assessment estimate this to be “Given an average working weekday length of 10.5 hours (e.g. 0700 - 1730hrs), an average of 8 two-way HGV movements are expected to / from the Site per hour (i.e. 4 arrivals and 4 departures)”. To respond to this application and object to it because of the impact on Bawtry the application numbers are ES/3925; 1/18/01457/CDM0. If you search Nottinghamshire County Council website and put in planning consultations and search open for consultation, this application will come up. Planning application for Bassetlaw Council in Harworth This 600 application is now going to appeal. Doncaster Council have maintained their objections to this due to impact on a number of junctions in Doncaster including Tickhill Road. It is expected that this hearing will take place in the Autumn and I will update you of the outcome. Planning application for Top Street There are plans to change the current agricultural business to a beauty clinic and a training academy. The application can be found on Doncaster Council’s planning portal and will be discussed by the Town

46

Council at their September meeting, so if you have a view, please send your comments to Doncaster Council. Transport Issues As you may be aware, the Mayor of the Sheffield City Region has commissioned a review of bus services that will make recommendations regarding the future provision of bus services in South Yorkshire. The review is being chaired by Clive Betts MP and will cover a number of issues. Austerfield residents – please complete and highlight that you do not have a bus service; Bawtry residents please give your views on the existing service. You can complete the online survey at https://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/southyorkshire-bus-review/ Staying with South Yorkshire City Region, last month they published their future transport proposals. Funding has not been secured so their proposals might not happen, but it was good to see a tram train service from Doncaster to the airport, which was extended to have a tram/train stop in Bawtry. It’s all at the initial stages of development and I will keep you informed of future developments. Giving your views on your area and the Borough Doncaster Council have launched a Doncaster Talks consultation asking residents 3 questions; what is good about your area; what would you like to see improved and what do you think Doncaster should focus on in the future. There is an online survey if you visit the Doncaster Council website; there are face-to-face events or if you cannot access the internet, I am happy for you to contact me to talk through your answers and I will ensure they are included. It is the first time the council have done this so I really hope residents take this opportunity to influence what happens locally and across the Borough. Closer to home, the referendum for the Bawtry Neighbourhood Plan is being held on 12 September. There are copies for you to look at in the library before the 12 September so please do take the opportunity to vote, yes or no. All of the information has come from the many consultations that have taken place over the last 4 years when residents took the opportunity to say what they wanted. Doncaster’s Local Plan, which directs all development in the Borough over the next 15, was agreed by Doncaster Council in July. At this meeting,

UPDATE FROM COUNCILLORS

RACHAEL BLAKE AND MICK COOPER Continued...

I objected to the inclusion of land next to Westwood for housing development. Everyone now has their chance to give their views on the Local Plan ready for the next stage of development. Please visit Doncaster Council’s website for more information. The library has a number of computers that you can use free of charge if you do not have access to the internet. Highways issues, repairs, hedges and re-lining Residents have contacted me over the last few weeks and it is good to see that these requests for improvements have been included. Paul contacted me about the footpath from the Wharfe Street play area to the River Idle. As this is a public right of way, Doncaster Council have now cut this back. Top Street is looking much better now it has been resurfaced. Residents complained as the yellow lines had gone but the council has to sweep a new road 3 times before the yellow lines can be put down, hence the delay in this being done. I have asked for the white lining to be improved around the Town as in many areas it is fading. The man holes that are clanking when hit on Martin Lane has been fixed and the one on Thorne Road has been reported to Severn Water who are responsible for this. A number of gullies have now been cleared of debris after I have reported them and the problems with raw sewage on Swan Street have also been resolved. For future reference, if residents experience problems with raw sewage it will be Severn Trent and he number for them is 0800 783 4444. I am very aware of the increased criminal and anti social behaviour affecting residents and businesses in the town. The police and Doncaster Council are now working together to reduce this and operations planned to apprehend the offenders. Now that the bird-nesting season is coming to an end many of the hedge problems are being attended to by Street Scene so you will notice improvements in the next few weeks. Problem Dogs The Council’s enforcement team continue to patrol the area to apprehend dog owners who are letting their dogs foul and spoil the paths and grass for everyone. In addition, I was contacted by a resident concerned about dangerous dogs and witnessing dog fouling. This is the response I received from the Enforcement Team Manager: If the woman has witnessed a dog foul and they are happy to give a statement to an officer we can ask one of the enforcement officers to arrange to meet her and discuss the incident. With regards to her query

about being able to report these matters, this can be done online at the DMBC web page and the job will come through to the enforcement team to raise for an officer. They can also call 736000 and this will be logged, it is likely that a dangerous dog incident would be dealt with by South Yorkshire Police and therefore if her husband has been attacked then she should call 101 and report this. We are tasking Local Authority Support (kingdom) with patrolling throughout the borough and they will take action against anyone failing to pick up after their dog. The officers will also take action through the PSPO (public space protection order) if they witness a dog being aggressive to members of the public or other animals by asking the person in control of the Dog to put it on a lead. A Chatter and Natter table in the Little Deli Some of you may have heard of a national initiative to encourage cafes to designate one of their tables as a chatter and natter table to encourage people to meet and get to know each other and therefore reduce loneliness. Megan who has done her National Citizenship Scheme has heard about the scheme and has created a table in the Little Deli in Dower House Square. Megan is only 16 so it is great that she has come up with this idea. Please pop along, support it, and get to know people in the town and perhaps meet new people. As usual, I have run out of space so please do get in touch if I can help with any issues that are affecting you and the Town. Due to the Neighbourhood Plan referendum count, I will be moving my surgery from 13th September to 14th from 11-1 in Bawtry Community Library so please do pop in. CHANGE IS CONSTANT T We seem to be surrounded with change – in our world, our nation and in our town. None of us could miss the (almost) daily news about “climate change”. There seems

to be very convincing evidence that the earth is heating up. The BBC reported that this summer the UK temperature broke all records. We experienced this in Bawtry with the warm, muggy nights when we had problems sleeping; followed by violent rainstorms and flooding – tropical is a fair description. But some argue that this is only “weather”. Climate is a much longer-term phenomenon; and some prominent politicians still claim that Global Warming is not a problem. But the risk of doing nothing is too great – governments, industries and ordinary people are beginning to change. We have a new Prime Minister & a new “Administration”. But politics is undergoing more significant changes. Even seasoned commentators are increasingly cautious about predicting what the coming months will bring. The language of politics is much more confrontational with phrases like “cliff-edge” and “collaborators”. This reinforces the belief in the country that those sitting in the House of Commons are not “fit for purpose”. Many are rejoicing that we now have a new and more purposeful Prime Minister; but others are in despair. And here in Bawtry all three established churches are facing change (see the August Bawtry Today). Jonathan Strickland shared a moving and powerful tribute to his wife, Jackie. What an impact Jackie has made on the church and the town and the

50

wider community during over 12 years of support for Jonathan as the vicar of St Nicholas, Bawtry. She will be missed by more than just her husband and family. Then in the summer, after 11 years in the Doncaster Circuit and five years as Minister of Bawtry Methodist, Dr Frank Okai Sam moved on to new ministry on the south coast. I know that Pam Barrer and Alice Curry will miss Frank’s support and wise input. Simon Carter shared his final pastor’s page last month. He has stood down after 10 years as pastor of Bawtry Community Church. He had a powerful impact on the church and beyond in the local community. We wish him well wherever he ends up. Change can be unsettling and stressful. But through all these changes – whether global (climate), national (government) or local (church leadership) – we can look beyond to the creator God who is still in control and never changes. As one writer in the New Testament put it: “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” So, as we navigate all the changes, there is a constancy. We can rejoice in the things that we can do – making friends, helping others, encouraging, doing good – and leave those things that are beyond our capabilities to a wonderful and loving God. SAMARITAN'S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD As we are nearing autumn, our thoughts will soon be turning towards Christmas and thinking about filling shoe boxes to send to children who have nothing.

The Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child sends shoe boxes filled with toys, books, pens, etc to children who have nothing - their faces are full of delight and happiness as they open their box as this is probably the only gift the children will receive at Christmas. During the last 25 years 157,782,657 shoe boxes have been sent to 163 countries and territories. If you would like to fill a shoe box, leaflets giving information and guidance on what to put in the boxes will be available from the beginning of September in Tickhill Library. Flat pack boxes will be on sale at the Library

or at the Coffee Morning at Tickhill Methodist Church on Wednesday, 2nd October. Items for sale at the coffee morning will include notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, pencil cases, hats/gloves, soap, flannels, toothbrushes, toys, colouring books and crayons, soft toys, combs, hair accessories, musical instruments. Notebooks, pens and pencils are particularly useful as this enables the older children to attend school if they have their own writing material. Due to increasing customs regulations toothpaste and sweets can no longer be included in the shoe boxes. If you are unable to fill a box yourself, why not get a group of friends to contribute and share the cost - as the well known saying goes 'every little helps'!

T

I can deliver leaflets and flat packs if you are unable to get to the library or coffee morning and also collect any filled boxes. Your help would be very much appreciated - a shoe box would bring a great deal of happiness into a child's life. Many thanks. Any queries please phone Chris Watson on 07910 176644

DATES TO REMEMBER

Bawtry Town Council - September 2019

Public Referendum on Thursday 12th September 2019 Since 2015, Bawtry Town Council, residents and business people have been working on a Neighbourhood Development Plan for Bawtry. This has necessitated the widest consultation, with residents, community groups and business interests in the town. It has now been completed and successfully passed through all the formal processes required. All Bawtry’s registered electors are eligible to vote in the referendum as to whether they approve the Plan. A majority of votes in favour will result in the Plan becoming part of planning law. Are you confident Bawtry will be developed in accordance with the preferences of its residents in the future? Local planning decisions are determined by DMBC. Bawtry Town Council and individuals can and do make comments and recommendations – but the decisions are made by DMBC, and those decisions may not reflect

56

Bawtry’s concerns and priorities. The creation of a Neighbourhood Plan is a way to shift the balance of power a bit. The Government’s Localism Act of 2011 introduced Neighbourhood Plans, to give local people more say in what happens. Decisions will still be made by the local Planning Authority – but if our Plan is supported at referendum they have to be consistent with it. As well as planning policies, the Neighbourhood Plan includes other “non-planning” policies related to such matters as highways, traffic and other issues that are important to the town. Hard copy of the Plan can be seen at Bawtry Community Library, the Doncaster Central Library on Waterdale, or at the DMBC Civic Office on Waterdale. You can see digital copies on BTC’s website http://bawtrytowncouncil.co.uk/, and on DMBC’s website at https://www. doncaster.gov.uk/services/the-councildemocracy/bawtry-neighbourhoodplanning-referendum So – if you care about Bawtry you need to make sure you’re registered to vote. Registration and voting is organised in the same way as for national and local elections. Then you need to get down to New Hall on 12th September and participate in the referendum.
