welcome to the FEBRUARY 2013 edition of Bawtry Today. “How do you spell ‘love’?” asked Piglet… ”You don’t spell it... you feel it.” answered Pooh. What a lovely quote! And so totally true. With Valentines Day coming up it got me thinking about love and what it actually means. Not just in the context of partnerships but also with people around us; our children and friends. It doesn’t take much to show someone you love them, and it’s your thoughts and efforts that go a long way. So even if you don’t have a special someone in February, just have a go at extending some love to a person close to you. As Piglet says, you don’t even need to be able to spell it. The next issue will be delivered from 1st March, anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Thursday 14th February – Valentines Day!
Best wishes, Paula x

Pet OF THE MONTH Name: Sex: Approx age: Good with dogs: Good with children: Good with cats: HERE AT THE sanctuary January seems to go on forever particularly when the weather is really horrid with snow and ice. All our residents have under-floor heating in their bedrooms with snug blankets and duvets. We also get through a massive amount of towels and our dryers are on constantly in the winter months. this also means huge electricity bills, which are a drain on our resources. Fund raising is always a priority, we want to be here for the future but without your help we will not survive. the people of Doncaster gave generously when we did our usual Christmas street collection. this took place the saturday before Christmas we met some lovely people and would like to thank everyone for coming to say hello. Another fund raiser took place at Ye old Bell hotel in Barnby moor, Nr retford we organised a French Night which was lots of fun & everyone had a fantastic time. A big thank you to everyone that donated auction and raffle prizes, also ilbello from harworth for donating table decorations once again. Another fun evening is all set to go with a bang is a ‘Wild West Night’ (Cowboys and indians). this will take place again at Ye old Bell, Barnby moor on the 8th June so please put this on your calendar, come and have some fun and raise money for a good cause. there will be disco, auction, 6

Moving on?
AS 2013 PROGRESSES and we
start to look forward to the spring ahead of us, you may find yourself considering making a fresh start and fulfilling your dreams of moving to a new home. Whether you are moving to a bigger home, downsizing, staying local, moving across the country or moving to another country, it is unlikely you will be able to avoid the need to market your home to potential purchasers. We have all read that the housing market has seen better days, however, experience has shown even at the worst times people do continue to move it just requires a little more effort and a fresh approach to attracted the right buyer. Preparation is the key to realising the
true potential of your home and with a little effort, you will improve the chances of finding that buyer. Here are our top tips to get you started. 1) That all important curb appeal A buyer will judge your home before they even step through your door, so always make sure the front of your home is fresh and inviting. if you have a front lawn keep it cut, ensure the drive is free from discarded clutter
and where possible add a little seasonal colour by adding hanging baskets or pots full of colour. 2) Unfinished Business remember how you felt when you first saw your home and how you saw yourself enjoying relaxing in the garden with friends and a glass of something cool, not up a ladder paintingor clearing the gutters! so ensure that the paintwork has been

property touched up and the all those little jobs are done before you ask an estate agent to prepare a brochure.Don’t be afraid to ask for help, call in expertise for those jobs that you have been meaning to do for months but have felt that they were a little beyond your abilities. 3) see your home through other people’s eyes Be brave, ask your friends and family to cast a critical eye over your home, it will give you a good idea of how other people see your home. remember to listen and if possible act on their comments. try to detach yourself from the house, and view it through the eyes of potential purchasers, remember you want to move on and the sooner you find a buyer the sooner you can do so. 4) show off your space wisely maximising the potential of each room is so important to show buyers how they can work for them. Clearing away toys from a lounge will create a
more relaxed area or taking a spare bed out of a box room and creating a home office or hobby room can bring tremendous benefits to potential buyers. Buyers need to be able to see how they would be able to use space – and not all of them have the imagination to see how it could look, they need you to show them. We trust that by following these simple tips, you will find the
inspiration you need to realise your dreams and make your home their home. You never know, when you have finished the jobs, de-cluttered, and increased your kerb appeal, you may decide that you love your home and don’t want to leave it anyway! Bassetlaw means business BASSETLAW’S FIRST BEXPO
event will be on tuesday, 14th may 2013 at retford town hall, bringing with it a unique forum for businesses in and around the region to meet, trade and conduct business. A non-profit event, Bexpo aims to raise awareness that Bassetlaw is a great place to do business whilst also providing local B2B and B2C companies with high profile exposure. Plus, with free entry and a variety of stand sizes available at sensible prices for exhibitors, it’s an event providing opportunities to businesses of all sizes, large or small. Kicking off with pre-show breakfast networking at 7.30am, the exhibition opens at 9.30am and closes at
• one-to-one Q&A sessions held in ‘the lounge’ • An all-day café
7.00pm with a viP drinks reception for exhibitors.
• Competitions, awards, prizes and a goody bag
Under the umbrella of Bassetlaw Business Focus, three local businesses Createinn, Focus Accounting and the Best of retford and the Best of Worksop, have collaborated to organise an event that will transform retford town hall into a one stop business shop consisting of:
• A viP evening drinks reception with entertainment
• over sixty exhibitors, including a dedicated food hall for local food producers and retailers • Free seminars from four keynote speakers on the stage • A breakfast networking event with retford b4b Business Club • Free speed networking events throughout the day
”We’re absolutely delighted to be able to finally announce that Bassetlaw’s first Bexpo will be taking place in may of this year, as usually local businesses have to travel to cities for expo events of this kind,” explains Alison leckenby from the Best of retford and the Best of Worksop. “Bassetlaw plays host to so many well respected businesses itself, so we thought it was about time that they were acknowledged and celebrated right on their doorstep to show that we mean business here too, and the Bexpo is the perfect forum,” Claire Weingaertner, of Focus Accounting, continues.

Business unusual... TERRY GORMLEY, local entrepreneur and business growth advisor, has packed an awful lot into his life so far. A former miner and Firefighter, terry has used his skills and experience to found the Fire training Academy - a company that delivers fire safety training to businesses, schools and organisations across the country. terry then developed his communication, life and business skills by studying Neurolingusitic Programming (NlP), reaching the ultimate levels of master Practitioner, trainer and Coach. he has used a combination of all these to help him develop his businesses and raise thousands of pounds for his chosen
charities; money raised in the most challenging of ways. As Terry says: ‘taking yourself out of your comfort zone can bring the most rewarding results – learning something new is energising and inspiring. over the last few years i have skydived, run several marathons including the New York and climbed to everest base camp. All these challenges have helped me focus on getting things done in all areas of my life, with the added bonus of helping in a small way some of the people and charities that inspire me.’ As a business growth advisor he now also runs the south Yorkshire branch of the entrepreneur’s Circle, a national network of business workshops; structured local meetings that combine
action and aspiration with the emphasis very much on learning not networking. For 2013 terry will continue help local businesses to move forward as well as his own, whilst finding the time to organise his next charity challenge – more important than ever as the recession has hit many charities and some are even struggling to survive. if you would like to find out more about The entrepreneurs Circle and how Terry can assist you and your business during 2013, please visit www.ec-southyorkshire.co.uk For more details about The Fire Training Academy visit www. firetrainingacademy.co.uk

Sheep Music Society’s Bawtry Nativity Trail December concert
IT IS TO BE EXPECTED that an
event close to Christmas should have a seasonal flavour and so it proved for tickhill music society’s December concert. on this occasion the fairy on the musical Christmas tree was a return visit from Phillipa thomas, the elegant, richly chocolate-voiced mezzo soprano with her regular accompanist michael Neaum at the piano. traditionally at the Christmas concert the audience expects to sing a few favourite carols. With the soloist this year being a singer it was possible to sprinkle the audience participation items throughout the programme and this worked very well indeed. And what a varied programme it was, ranging from the expected extracts from ‘messiah’ and Bach’s ‘Christmas oratorio’ to more modern and less well known items such as those by Peter Warlock and michael head. there were also Negro spirituals and the almost inevitable ‘White Christmas‘. the songs and carols from the audience alternated with piano solos vigorously played by michael Neaum, including mazurkas Nos. 43 and 45 by Chopin and three ‘Christmas Pieces’ by mendelssohn.
the seasonal atmosphere continued strongly during the interval with wine and tasty mince pies for refreshments and the bumper raffle ably organised by Gilian harries. With introductions by the Chairman Adrian hattrell the whole package formed a fitting, festive end to the first half of the society’s season.

GREAT FUN WAS had by many, old and young, searching for the lost sheep in Bawtry in the shops of the town last December. twenty five lost sheep were eventually rounded up and brought to st Nicholas Church for the Nativity service on 23rd December. many children helped us find them but the winning entries were in the 0-4’s William hodgson and Beth Cooke and in the 5-11’s thomas Curtis and samuel scott. each won a book. As did Will tempest who designed the Christmas Card that was delivered around Bawtry and Austerfield this Christmas on behalf of Bawtry Churches together. You will be pleased to know that all the sheep have now been rehoused with children who attended the service. A huge thank you to all the retailers of Bawtry for participating in this Christmas fun.

A Snowy Day
For more information go to www.missonprimary.wordpress.com
What a fun start to the new term, first the whole school visited the Majestic Theatre in Retford to see Cinderella then that rare occurrence when there is plenty of snow to have fun in but school is still open. Despite the cold weather all the staff and nearly all the children made it into school and waited excitedly for playtime to arrive. Once out on the field the children displayed their creativity building all sorts of snow objects including a fort, a giant snow sculpture and of course a selection of

snowmen. The children’s behaviour was impeccable as usual and they were having so much fun the teachers gave them an extended playtime as a reward.

Retail association new chairman BAWTRY RETAIL ASSOCIATION (BrA) was formed in 2011 with the sole aim of bringing together the town’s retailers and service businesses, enabling them to share ideas, promote a community spirit and increase visitors to, and trade within, the town.
As a small town stacked with independent retailers, over 50 of which are part of BrA, they have worked together on a number of initiatives including Jubilee commemorative flags, Flowers, Christmas trees and lights, visit Bawtry race meeting and Charity Polo Cup, prize for the st leger Best Dressed lady and competitions in regional and national media. A new Chair was
appointed a few weeks ago. mark Bates of Bawtry shoe Company will take the reins for the following year, from previous Chair Councillor John Walsh, and already has a clear vision in mind.
“Bawtry retail Association is there to support the towns retailers and ensure that Bawtry remains a great place to shop, work and socialise whether you are resident or just visiting,” said mark. “our common goal is to ensure the longevity and prosperity of Bawtry for residents and businesses alike and, by working together, we feel confident that this can be achieved.”
meeting takes place to generate, discuss and implement ideas. BrA is a not-for-profit organisation. All membership fees are invested in initiatives which benefit the Bawtry community. Further information can be found by visiting www.bawtry.org.

Newsletter Bawtry town Council - January 2013
PRECEPT 2013/14 WHAT PRECEPT HAS BEEN SET? PARISH/TOWN COUNCILS RECEIVE a small amount of the local
council tax (known as the Precept). Bawtry town Council has completed its budget process for 2013/14 and we are pleased to announce that the Precept will again be set at £26k for the forthcoming financial year. For the eighth year running the Precept has been maintained at this level, which has only been possible because of receipts from the Pay and Display on market hill. Without this revenue, the Precept would have been increased over the years to a figure in excess of £40k, which would have meant an increase in council tax for all Bawtry residents.
WHAT HAPPENS TO BUSINESS RATES? ALL THE MONEY collected
from business rates is paid into a Government central pool and is then redistributed to local authorities depending on population. Parish/ town councils receive no income whatsoever from business rates in their areas.
HOW DOES BAWTRY TOWN COUNCIL USE THE PRECEPT INCOME? BAWTRY TOWN COUNCIL has
spent wisely on the upkeep and maintenance of its assets, e.g. • repairs to the Buttercross under the guidance of english heritage • memorial sports Field maintenance • spending to improve the cemetery, allotments and Wharf st play area • White lining on market hill -£1.8k
30 BAWTRY TODAY
• refurbishment of the Pinfold - £5k • Christmas lighting - £18k to date • refurbishment, re-opening and upkeep of Gainsborough road toilets and the surrounding area £18k since 2011 • rates for market hill - c£27k over the last 8 years Donations have been made to local organisations and charities. over the last 2/3 years these include: • Bawtry Action for recreation and sport (BArs) - £6K • Bawtry Amateur Dramatic society- £5k • Bawtry Community library - £5k • the New hall - £3k • Bawtry Youth Club - £500 • mayflower school Jubilee gifts to pupils - £850 • royal British legion, smaller donations including remembrance sunday wreaths • tickhill & District lions for the Christmas float in Bawtry
We are committed to funding extensive developments and improvements to the memorial sports Field, a scheme currently being processed by the dedication of the BArs committee. the revenue from the market hill car park has enabled Bawtry town Council to both freeze its Precept and make expenditure and donations such as those listed above.
WINDOW DRESSING COMPETITION 2012 IT WILL COME as no surprise that
Womacks won the Christmas Window Competition with a spectacular display, which gave us all so much pleasure. robinson’s of Bawtry, the Crown hotel and Bawtry Natural health all receive special mention. thank you to all who entered and added much to the Bawtry Christmas celebrations.
