Worms Winter and
Wildlife Somewhere warm & safe to curl up . . . AS WINTER APPROACHES, wildlife body-clocks are already preparing for the lower temperatures and scarcity of food. surprisingly, there are only 3 mammals that actually hibernate in the UK; the hedgehog, bat and dormouse. All other mammals fatten up or store food and some just prepare to slow down and sleep a lot. Just like us, when it’s cold outside, wildlife want somewhere warm and safe to curl up and some comfort food to keep them happy. sO WHAT CAN We DO TO HeLP WiLDLiFe sUrvive? Gardens, yards, tubs, window boxes – good news – leave them well alone! leave fading blooms and seed heads just where they are over the winter – fallen leaves make great mulch so scatter them on your garden – if you feel you must tidy up something, then make a ‘brush pile’ of old branches, twigs, stalks and leaves in a quiet part of the yard or garden. Dried, dead and decaying vegetation provide food and shelter for a whole range of 16 BAWTRY TODAY
insects that then becomes food for small mammals and birds. Ponds, water features and bird baths – spend the time you’ve saved by not tidying the garden to keeping these valuable sources of water ice-free instead. The further wildlife has to fly and roam to find running water, the more energy they use and the more food they need. Water is crucial for their survival so every drop counts.
WOrMs – Now is a good time to think about the worms in your wormery. some people relocate their wormeries into a shed or garage – if this isn’t an option, don’t worry. Worms will slow down over winter, but they won’t starve; they will simply recycle the compost waste they have already made. Fill the air gap on top of the waste organic matter with fallen deciduous leaves and make sure the lid fits properly so rain doesn’t enter and then freeze. Use crumpled newspaper if you don’t have any leaves. it is quite normal for some worms to die over winter if they are outside, but they will have laid eggs which will hatch as soon as the weather warms up again, replenishing your worm population.
Want to know more about wildlife or wormeries? Then please contact the team at Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trusts’ idle valley Nature reserve, North road, retford DN22 8sG on 01777 713945 or askidlevalley@ nottswt.co.uk

I have heard that Legal Aid for family cases is being abolished, is this true?
N
ot quite, but the government has approved very drastic cuts to Legal Aid which will come into force in April 2013 and will have a huge impact on many people who currently receive state benefits, or are on low incomes and who are, at the moment, eligible for Legal aid for divorce, cohabitation disputes, financial disputes following separation and disputes over children, such as arguments about where a child should live, or how much contact they should have with each parent. Those areas will be removed entirely from the scope of Legal Aid, so regardless of your income, funding will not be available for new cases from April next year. Legal Aid will still be available to cover representation in Care Proceedings,
i.e. where the Local Authority makes an application to Court for orders about a child, and for other family disputes involving serious domestic violence. Solicitors expect that there will be a rush of applications for Legal Aid before the April 2013 deadline as anxious couples try to resolve family disputes whilst they are still eligible for funding. If you think that you may be affected by the changes to Legal Aid it may be sensible to seek advice as soon as possible, before the changes come into force.

Our first trip there was on Thursday 27 September. We played a game called The Water Cycle where you have to make your own water cycle and make the start link to the ending. We all found this game particularly fun. Other activities include making a river in the quarry and making a water filter. When we made the water filters we were put into groups and the group who makes the cleanest water wins, in the end it was a draw between my team and Louis’s team. We were supposed to go down to the river to see how fast the river flows but there was an escapee horse so we couldn’t go. th
Instead we went on the Thursday 11 October. This time we didn’t go to the centre, we walked up to the river and then met the leader who is called Michelle (most people call her Shelly) and we threw dog biscuits into the river and timed how fast they went over ten metres. It was really fun. Over all we had a great time and found out lots of information about rivers. By Faye

Bawtry Town Council - November 2012 LiCeNsiNG An inaugural meeting of Bawtry Pub Watch, Bawtry Retail Association (which includes three members of the Town Council) is still awaited to be convened by the business groups. in order to clarify the position with regard to the power to approve or deny the granting of liquor licences this power resides with DmBC’s licensing Committee. Bawtry’s Town Councillors merely make observations on items brought to the Town Council which are in the general interest of the town. in order to be seen to be acting responsibly the Councillors are therefore carefully monitoring the number and type of applications placed before the Council in making its observations so that approvals granted by DmBC are kept at a level consistent with the character and culture of Bawtry business premises for the benefit of visitors and resident.
HiGHWAY issUes Damage to street furniture (ie lighting columns, traffic lights, seating etc.) should be reported to DmBC for action. Please remember that a direct line to DmBC at Bawtry Community library is still available for you personally to report any matters that concern you to DmBC, the highway authority or by telephoning Doncaster Council on 736000.
MArKeT HiLL Pay and display parking on the market hill car park will be extended to 10pm (22.00 hours) (This was the original contract signed up to some years ago). This will become effective from 1st November, 2012. Reflective signage and new pay and display meters will be provided. Current charges will remain the same. A ‘tick-over tariff’ of a night time will also become effective from 1st November 2012. 32 BAWTRY TODAY
GAiNsBOrOUGH rOAD TOiLeTs An employee of the town council is now responsible for the cleaning of the toilets. Works to the rear of the toilets is under consideration, with regard to security and hopefully to deter ‘fly tipping’.
AirPOrT & TUNNeL TeCH COMPLAiNTs Can we remind all residents that complaints should be referred to the telephone numbers/email addresses at the end of this newsletter, so that the complaints can be logged by the appropriate authority. YOUTH CLUB
if you feel you can offer sometime in this worthwhile venture, then please initially contact George spencer on 01302 711464 – two hours on a Friday once a fortnight is the commitment required. volunteers are desperately needed – Can you
help? There is a danger that left to its current schedule (ie once per month) run by DmBC staff, the youth club could become non-existent. Necessary training can be provided. PleAse, CAN YoU helP?
COUNCiL vACANCY
once again ten residents of Bawtry (on the elector’s register) have called for an election to fill the one vacancy on the Town Council. Two candidates are seeking election, one of whom will have been elected by the time you read this article. Unfortunately, although democracy is essential, it also comes at a price. This one election on the 18th october 2012 will have cost in the region of £10k, and with the previous one in may (held at the same time as the Ward & mayoral Referendum) the total cost to the Bawtry council tax payer (not the business tax payer) will be around £14k, a large drain on resources in a short five month period.

November Cabaret in Everton SATURDAY 10TH NOVEMBER
is the date for another of the popular Cabaret evenings that are hosted by the village Players (everton). With the aid of a subsidy from Notts village ventures the Players are again able to present a top professional act. This time it’s ”The Buffalo Gals”, who are fast becoming the country’s favourite old-time country string band. Firmly rooted in traditional American music, with an authentic sound driven by fiddle, banjo, percussive step dance, and soaring harmonies, their music is packed with all the excitement, passion and fun of Appalachian, Bluegrass, Blues and Cajun tunes and songs. The event will take place in everton village hall, which will be transformed
into an intimate performance venue, with professional staging and lighting and cabaret seating for diners, who will enjoy a hot meal before the performance and a home-made sweet course in the interval (special dietary requirements can be catered for). A licensed bar will be available, selling quality wines, beers and soft drinks. Tickets (priced at £15, including meal) are available from the Players Box office (01777 817275) or via their web site (www.evplayers.org.uk) The Players’ last two cabaret evenings sold out, so customers are advised to book early to avoid disappointment.
