Today

See and feel the quality for yourself

Welcome to the

May & June 2019 edition “The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today” H. Jackson Brown Jr

As the months fly by, we once again enter the final term of the school year and exam season begins. Good luck to all those families with children and grandchildren studying hard this May and June. Once again, my family is included this year, with our last set of GCSEs nearly upon my youngest. We have been fortunate to secure a pair of tickets for Rita Ora when she performs at Doncaster Racecourse this summer. You will find details of how YOU could win those tickets on page 21. The July & August issue will be delivered to you early July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 19th June. This issue is sure to bring lots of summer events, so don’t forget to let me have details in good time if you have an event to publicise this summer. Enjoy Spring moving into Summer and I will be back in July with your next magazine.

Best wishes,

LIFESTYLE

“Why am I always tired?” I noticed that question is the 4th most asked on Google beginning with the word “why”.

Sure you can scrape by on less, but you increase your chances of many illnesses and the number one way to stop feeling like you need more sleep, is to get more sleep!

When you consider all the possible questions we could ask, it shows just how large a problem a lack of energy is for a large chunk of the population.

2 – Nutrition – Unhealthy diet means an unhealthy gut which creates discomfort and disturbs our sleep as well as sucks out energy.

Isn’t that such a shame, isn’t that such a waste?!

Cut back on the things you know you should be consuming less of and ensure you get your 5 a day of fruit/veg as well as sufficient water to make some immediate impact.

We get around 70 (ish) years on the planet (hopefully) and instead of enthusiastically seeking our potential the majority drag themselves through their “best” years. So let’s take a look about some basics you can take control of today to increase your energy and inject more enthusiasm into your life. 1 – Common sense is often the least common action, so let’s start there… get some sleep! Sure, there are times in your life when burning the candle at both ends is unavoidable, the arrival of a baby into your life for example. But these should be temporary and every single respectable sleep expert agrees that human beings require 7-8 hours unbroken sleep to function at their best. The late night channel hopping and web browsing is not pouring anything useful into our lives, so cut that out and set a more suitable bedtime.

8

3 – Exercise/Activity – Being active increases energy, decreases stress, elevates mood and releases chemicals in our body that allow better rest. Pick an activity you enjoy, is suitable for your fitness level and start to reap the rewards within a matter of weeks, sometimes days. 4 – Life Plan – The above 3 improvements can make a big impact for sure. But even with those ticked off your list, nothing saps your energy like a long-standing problem hanging over you. Lack of finances, relationship problems, anxiety, stress from work, lack of goals to strive for…these all consume our thoughts, suck out our energy and steal our enthusiasm. So let’s get practical. What is the biggest issue on your mind right now that is causing you to feel uneasy, restless of stressed?

What is the first step you could take today to begin solving this? It could be creating a plan to progress or change your career, perhaps an important conversation with someone you’ve been meaning to have, maybe seek guidance from a financial planner, go to the doctors with a medical issue you’ve been ignoring. Only you know what it is and chances are the more you resist seeking the solution, the more you need it. Imagine yourself a month from now. Getting enough deep sleep, eating better, more active, solutions for the major problems in your life found, working towards goals that inspire you and feeling re-energised, focused, fit, healthy! It’s a happy thought isn’t it and it can absolutely become a reality, but only if you choose to make it that way by taking action, the sooner the better. As always, go create a day and life that counts, have more desires that excuses.

CROQUET ?

T

If you would like to experience playing in the beautiful surroundings of Brodsworth Hall, with friendly people, the Croquet club is holding taster mornings on Tues 7th & Thurs 23th May. BAGS OF FUN FROM THE

FRIENDS OF

DONCASTER MUSEUMS T The Friends of Doncaster Museums were pleased to receive notification that their bid for support from Tesco had been successful.

This is down to the 'blue tokens' which customers allocated to us in Tesco stores across Doncaster in January and February. The 'Bags of Help' Scheme gives local community organisations the opportunity to raise money for projects which can make a difference in their communities. Our project you may remember was focussed on the imminent 50th Anniversary of the first moon landing. We wanted to celebrate this amazing milestone with a series of events which will enable people of all ages to either discover or rediscover the wonders of science. With the grant from Tesco’s, we will be funding a number of science activities over coming months. These will include siting a mobile planetarium at the museum on several occasions and some 'rocket' workshops. We also feel it is important to remember that our own home, Planet Earth, still has many wonders to be discovered and so we'll also be organising several animals handling sessions, featuring snakes and tarantulas to name only two species. All these events will be advertised widely; some will be pre-bookable. All will be fun! We'd like to thank everyone who voted for us; thanks to you we can offer these events free of charge!

LEGAL MATTERS

Change to Divorce Law Changes to Divorce law will be made as soon as parliamentary time becomes available according to the justice secretary. This will be the biggest change in divorce law in 50 years. At the moment one party has to allege unreasonable behaviour or adultery if they have not been separated for two or five years. The new legislation would mean only having to assert that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, without having to attribute blame or wait for at least two years. There will be a six-month period for reflection before the Decree Absolute is granted. The aim of the overhaul is to reduce conflict

between divorcing spouses. David Gauke who announced the changes said “While we will always uphold the institution of marriage, it cannot be right that our outdated law creates or increases conflict between divorcing couples. So, I have listened to calls for reform and firmly believe now is the right time to end this unnecessary blame game for good”

These changes in divorce law have taken many years to be approved and will be welcomed by divorcing couples and family lawyers once introduced. It is to be hoped that parliamentary time is made available in the near future and the long-awaited changes are finally implemented

It will also be possible in the future for there to be a joint application for a divorce. The changes are long overdue and will hopefully reduce conflict and Head of Family Law, hostility which can be damaging Taylor Bracewell for divorcing spouses and their 01302 341414, children. Artist returns after 50 years! TERENCE BENNET: A RETROSPECTIVE exhibition of paintings and drawings by this Doncaster artist. In September 1967 Terence Bennett became the first artist to hold a one-person exhibition at Doncaster Museum & Art Gallery. Now, over 50 years later, as the Museum prepares to move to its new site at the top of Chequer Road, he is to become the last artist to have a one- person display at the gallery. The large-scale exhibition brings together paintings and drawings produced over a 60 year period, from student works created at Doncaster School of Art in the 1950s, to a series of glowing watercolours fresh off the easel. Terence was born in Doncaster in 1935, the son of a painter and decorator. He knew from an early age that he wanted to paint, and in 1951, at the age of 15, he enrolled at the Doncaster School of Arts and Crafts, where he was taught by T.A Anderson, Eric Platt and Jack Camm. After completing his National Service he taught art at Doncaster High School, while continuing to paint and exhibit

locally. As his work developed he became known for his Yorkshire scenes, including images of the mining landscape and costal places such as Spurn Point. In 1973 Terence was awarded the Yorkshire Television Fine Art Fellowship, and over that year produced around 70 works, all depicting the Yorkshire region, some of those paintings are now in the collection of the Bank of England. Throughout his life Terrence has continued to paint, and he has been recognised by inclusion in the prestigious Royal Academy Summer exhibition in London for a number of years, as well as holding many one- person exhibitions in London and across the country. Terence Bennett has been described a ‘a painter of place, someone who identifies with the place he is trying to capture’ and it is this that makes for such a compelling and moving exhibition. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: through May Deli Artists including Neil McGregor, Penny Cawley and Maureen Fisher present FACES a group show of portraiture www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 17 June SYLVIE FRANQUET who reworks found tapestries combining classical imagery and a punk aesthetic. ROMILLY SAUMARES SMITH another artist who reworks old discarded materials. This is such a poor description for an exhibition by an incredible artist, which is simply fascinating, and I highly recommend a visit. Romilly has made some really intriguing and beautiful tiny and detailed sculptural works in precious metals, I simply don’t know how they have been made, tiny fairy fingers and clever technical ability must have created these pieces. Down in the Valley! Tickhill’s ‘best kept secret’ if you like garden machinery...

T

orne Valley is a bit of a hidden gem in the garden machine business, located on Bawtry Road, Tickhill. It’s a family run business, managed by Chris Chambers. It’s the kind of store where you will always walk out with a purchase even if you just go in for a browse! Stocking garden and horticultural supplies their brands include Viking, Stihl, Husqvarna, John Deere, Atco, Countax and other quality manufacturers, “we only stock quality brands” says Chris, “cheaper brands really aren’t worth stocking in the long run, as we have learned from our experience”. “Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Gardening should be pleasurable and not frustrating because machinery won’t start.” Torne Valley have three branches and is independently owned. The Bakewell store is located on Haddon Road, next to the petrol station, Epworth on Station Road and head office here at Tickhill in Doncaster, which has a heavy farming influence. Each branch tailors its products to fit the geology of the area in which it is based, Tickhill sell a lot of machinery for both small and large gardens alike. “Customers are always surprised at the range of over 30,000 products lines we stock” Chris explains. “Apart from the garden machines and ride-ons we have a range of hand tools and hardware, garden products, animal feed and products, horse tack, even kids mini tractors trailers and cars! It really is a huge range, but machinery is where we excel.” The range of products include lawnmowers, garden strimmers, brush cutters, a full range of hedge trimmers plus a huge selection of leading edge rechargeable lithium iron products which are light

weight. “The Stihl products really are a pleasure to use” adds Chris, “easy to handle, start at the flick of a switch, quiet and great for the environment. We presently have rechargeable Stihl strimmers at £99, which are very popular, we really can’t get enough of them.” “The same is true of the Stihl MS180 chainsaw, this 31.8cc 14” petrol chainsaw retails at £250 but we’re doing them at £189 and, again, they are selling really well. Whether it’s garden maintenance or cutting up logs for the burner these are a great machine!” At Torne Valley, they spend a great deal of time and effort to ensure they price stock competitively. “We are careful when buying stock, the size of the business enables us to bulk purchase during the off season when we can really push to obtain good prices. This enables us to pass these savings on” says Chris. “As Spring hits us and the garden bursts into life it’s time to get the old garden tools out and if you’re thinking of replacing them please give us a call. “At Torne Valley we’ll listen to your needs and recommend the right machine for you, we’ll then demo it and once you’ve decided on what you want we’ll set it up and run it so you’re really familiar with it. No opening a box and scratching your head as you figure out how to put the new lawnmower together” Chris says. “If you buy from us, you know it works, you know it’s right for you and you build a relationship that will probably see you coming back time and time again … the internet doesn’t do that!” Chris laughs. When you next need a garden machine, pop down to Torne Valley and see if they can help, you won’t be disappointed.

IN THE GARDEN

Scaling the Walls What do you think of if I say ‘clematis’? I think most of us would think of the large, purple-flowered, “Jackmanii” or the rampant, bronze-leafed, pink-flowered montana rubens. They are both terrific plants, but I think they are a little over-used. My husband teases me that I tend to give my ‘clematis lecture’ when visiting friends’ houses and see one scrambling over a trellis. For your benefit I’ve written it down here. Clematis is known as the ‘Queen of Climbers’. It can be utterly spectacular and should definitely not be relegated to trellis. It can used for covering fences and arbours, old tree stumps, sheds and even in beds and borders. Choose wisely and you can have flowers from early spring until late autumn. For beds and borders you don’t want anything as vigorous as montana, which will smother everything it touches. Instead choose a daintier one such as a variety of texensis or viticella. The flowers of the texensis hybrids look like finely cut bells. “Etoile Rose” is a beautiful dark pink edged with paler pink and “Princess of Wales” is a beautiful rosy red. Both of these will scramble through shrubs and flower all summer. They die back in winter so can be tidied up then. Viticella hybrids produce flowers which look like little pixie hats as they open. “Minuet” has purple and white flowers suspended on fine stems while “Purpurea Plena

30

Elegans” produces double blooms which open into little purple rosettes. One of the most difficult sites to find climbers for is an east or north facing site. My absolute favourite clematis thrives in this situation and flowers in early spring. Clematis alpina “Pink Flamingo” produces nodding, semi-double, creamy flowers veined with deep pink. It has the added bonus of producing beautiful fluffy seed heads after the flowers fade. Clematis prefers its feet in the shade and its head in the sun. Make sure the plant’s roots are shaded: pieces of broken flagstone are ideal, or an old cracked upsidedown terracotta pot with the bottom knocked out. When clematis is happy it will flower prolifically. Large-flowered clematis tend to produce a second flush in the autumn, but others like tangutica and orientalis wait to flower until then. Both of these are very vigorous and are great for covering unsightly sheds or old trees. Finally, if you have a sheltered spot against a wall try cirrhosa balearica. This is a beautiful, winter-flowering variety with ferny foliage and pale-green flowers spotted with crimson. So, there it is…my clematis lecture. Hopefully you took notes and are ready to branch out into a whole new world of climbers. Happy gardening!

BEE KEEPERS NEED YOUR HELP! T

Actually it’s the bees that need your help. The Asian Hornet has arrived in the UK. It was first spotted here in 2016, and it poses yet another threat to the Honey Bee population. It is extremely aggressive. Worse by far than our native hornet which is not a quarrelsome creature and actually less aggressive than our native wasps. The Asian Hornet ( Vespa velutina) has an unpleasant habit of hanging out at the entrance of a bee hive and as the workers emerge to go out foraging, it bites off their heads. It’s about twice the size of a bee. A small group of these hornets could destroy a hive of bees in a few hours, and then go in and help themselves to the honey. Apart from the sheer nastiness of this behaviour, the threat to the bee population will have a knock-on effect to the pollination of our food crops. Action is needed and DEFRA are set to eradicate this creature in the UK. So here are the distinctive features to look out for: It is about 20mm in length. It has a yellow segment on its abdomen which is mostly black/brown. On that yellow segment is a black triangular mark. It has long yellow socks on all its legs, and an orange face. If you see one please notify the Great British Non Native Species Secretariat immediately by email – alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk and if are able to photograph it, please do so and send a photo too.

South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir T In October 1925 the Doncaster County Borough Police formed a Male Voice Choir to perform at the Doncaster Grand Theatre in order to raise money to buy boots for the less well-off children in the Borough.

Over time the choir's name changed due to force amalgamations and today the choir is known as The South Yorkshire Police Male Voice Choir, probably the oldest police male voice choir in the UK (94 yrs) with the same charitable ethos. Many concerts both home and abroad have been performed in front of many people and on Saturday 1st June 2019 at Hall Cross Lower Academy School at 7pm the choir will be in concert with guests The Doncaster Youth Swing Orchestra, compare is BBC Look North Presenter Phil Bodmer.

Tickets are £10 to include interval refreshments and are available by phoning 01302 539284. Donations from a share of the proceeds are to be made to the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and DonMentia, the local Dementia charity group. New members are always sought. Further details on membership can be found at www.sypmvc.org.uk or contacting the choirs secretary on 01302 390579 or e mail malc@ malbee.plus.com

The meeting will also be attended by several young Spaniards who will answer questions on their lives in Spain and discuss any Spanish topics of interest to members and visitors. Please come along and test your knowledge of Spain and Spanish America. It is also a chance to practise your Spanish but for non-Spanish speakers, quizzes and discussions will be translated. All are very welcome. Friday 17th May, The Eastfield Restaurant, Doncaster Deaf Trust, Leger Way, Doncaster, 7-9 pm.

Saturday 4 – Sunday 19 T May 2019. The 2019 Doncaster Heritage Festival will be launched on Saturday with two fascinating talks – Helen Cox asking the question who was the rightful king, Edward IV or Richard III? And TV historian, Michael Wood, talks about Doncaster’s connection to the decisive Battle of Brunanburh in AD 937, which triggered the making of a united England. Other Doncaster-focussed highlights of the festival, include ‘An audience with Brian Blessed’, Doncaster’s heritage ambassador comes home to CAST recalling growing up here and filming ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ at Doncaster Archives. In 2017 Heritage Doncaster purchased the Conisbrough Court Rolls, 1265-1935, and we have two full days of related events including a number of talks about how you can get involved with the HLF funded project, an insight into the Manor courts and their evolution through time, entertainment from the Doncaster Waites and many free events are being held throughout Conisbrough and Denaby Main. Doncaster Market Place sees the start of the 2019 Tour de Yorkshire and to celebrate Doncaster’s cycling history, local broadcaster and author, Chris Sidwells talks about Doncaster’s cycling legends including Tom Simpson, a local lad who was the first Englishman to wear the yellow jersey. The festival has an exciting programme made up of a series of enthralling talks, workshops, walks and events that explore the history of the borough and beyond. Events will be at a variety of different venues and location from morning to evening, so why not discover something new?

Doncaster Ramblers The Doncaster Ramblers continue to support local initiatives to help and assist people to get out and about, whether through our work with carers and the cared for, or DMBC’s “Get Doncaster Moving” programme. If we are passionate about anything it’s the health and wellbeing walking in a group can bring. With this in mind and to dispel any notion that we are “hard core fell walkers” our volunteers have come up with a series of Short Thursday Walks in and around Doncaster for Doncaster folk. Walks are free, everyone is welcome, each walk begins around 10am and lasts between 2 to 2 ½ hours. So, if you are a first timer and just looking for a stroll, or a seasoned trekker but wanting something easier on the bones, check us out. For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our website where you can download copy of our walk programme www.doncasterramblers.org.uk And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found

Harworth ‘Christie’ Organ Enthusiasts

Do you like Ballroom & Sequence dancing , or just listening to a professional theatre organist play? Then please come along and join us on the fourth weekend of every month for dancing on Saturday night, and an organ concert on Sunday afternoon.

ROTARY CLUB PROVIDES SUNSHADES FOR SCHOOL IN SOUTH AFRICA T The Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger has provided sunshades to provide a covered teaching and recreation area for a school in a deprived suburb of Cape Town, South Africa. The club members, individually, already provide sponsorship for educating 20 chil-dren through the Imibala Trust, but when the Somerset West Methodist Primary School identified a need for a covered area, the Club, supported by a grant from Rotary District 1220, raised the funds to commission the erection of the shades which are like a series of gazebos. Work was overseen by Honorary Rotarian Margaret Wood and her husband Peter on their annual visit to S Africa to hand over the sponsorship money for the children. This money provides each sponsored child with uniform, books and food for a school year and results in educational oppor-tunities for children who would not otherwise be in school.

Saturday Dancing, 7.30pm until 11pm for £5.00 (licensed bar) All Sunday concerts start at 2.30pm, only £6.00 per concert for members and O.A.P’S (£7.00 non members) with refreshments included. Children under 12 free with an accompanying adult. For more information contact: Mr M Mason: 01302 744584 or Mr D.Fleetwood 07985 580558

Bessacarr & Cantley Forum

T

The Bessacarr & Cantley Community Forum meets again on Wednesday 8th May at St Francis Church Café, Nostell Place, Bessacarr. Please note the start time of 2.15pm. Our guest speaker is Carolyn Williams, Health Improvement Officer for the Public Health Department of DMBC who will speak on ‘Cancer Awareness’. So, do come along to the Forum meeting and find out more about what is happening in Bessacarr & Cantley. Everyone is welcome. The following meeting will be Wednesday 10th July 2019. Please make a note of the date.

Cantley Community Library T A Coffee Morning is held at the Library in the 2nd Saturday of each month from 10-12. We have home-baked cakes to serve with tea or coffee for a small charge and often have a selection of hand-knitted and hand-crafted items for sale from our Knit&Natter group. We are now coming to the end of our funded Tea and Tech courses which have proved very popular. The courses were aimed at older or socially isolated people who wanted to learn or develop IT skills. However, we plan to hold drop-in IT support sessions and will share more details about this in the near future. Our welcoming and friendly Knit&Natter group goes from strength to strength. As well as personal projects, our group knits for a number of local and overseas charities as well as supporting fund-raising for The Centre@Cantley - Cantley Community Library. We continue to host our children’s activity sessions on Thursday afternoons during school holidays. Our programme for 2019 has now been agreed and we have linked this year’s sessions with Doncaster events and attractions.

Cantley with Branton WI

T

Last month Cantley with Branton WI celebrated its 70th birthday. Members had been fundraising in preparation for the event and were able to provide a supper with musical entertainment. There were balloons and bunting, as well as delicious cakes and savouries. At the end of the evening we toasted members past and present before the President cut the expertly iced cake made by one of our committee. We are now looking forward to the next 70 years, beginning with our meeting on Thursday 9th May when a local artist will be talking about her work. As usual, proceedings start at 7pm in Kilham Hall, Kilham Lane, Branton, DN3 3PF. There is no charge for first time visitors. For more information, either phone (01302 772853 or 07910746925) or email (susanj-webster@sky. com) our Secretary, Susan Webster.
