elcome to the February

edition of HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY.

I was struggling for inspiration of what to write this month, in this little introduction to the magazine, so I invited suggestions via Facebook! I was inundated with responses some sensible, some not! Ideas for themes included Valentines Day, snowdrops and spring flowers, leap year and the breaking of resolutions. Someone even sent me a little ditty that I thought I would share with you. Roses are Red, Using local is clever, This edition of Harworth & Bircotes Today, is the best one ever! The next edition will be distributed to you from 26th February. Please ensure that anything that you would like included is with me by Friday 10th February.

Best Wishes, Paula

A

message from the Vicarage

Since September of last year I have been co-tutor on a course entitled ‘Journey In Faith’. It’s run by the diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and is designed to help Christians who want to look more closely at the faith they profess, studying Christian tradition, scripture and theology. It’s especially useful for those who feel they might have a calling to work in a church setting as a lay worker or as an ordained priest. Listening to the life stories of the students has been very interesting, hearing about the twists and turns which have led them to where they are and reflecting with them on where God might lead them in the future. It’s something I do quite often too. I look back and then forward, thinking about my journey from a small village near Keighley, via York, Oxford and Cornwall to Harworth and Bircotes, and I ponder on how God wants me to change and what he wants me to learn in preparation for things he wants me to be and do in the future. Change is inevitable, (except from a vending machine or parking meter!), and yet it is often thought of negatively or viewed with great suspicion. However, my personal journey of life and faith - now almost 50 years long - has taught me that a change of situation, an alteration in the way I do something, a change in approach, or indeed a fundamental change in me, tends more often than not to bring new blessings and I’d fully endorse the adage ‘Change often comes bearing gifts.’ Change is a part of every aspect and area of our life and our life of faith, for change is something that helps us to grow and growth is a sure sign of life. God created us to change. As I learn more about the world in which I live, about other human beings, more about myself and about God, I ‘morph’ into a new and hopefully better version of me. That’s what learning does for us; insight, wisdom, knowledge and understanding all help us to mature to grow and emerge as someone new. If we view our encounters with others, with God, and all of our experiences positively, we can be enhanced in some way.

Let’s face it, if nothing ever changed, there would be no butterfly! When it dies to one way of being, its life as a caterpillar, so it moves onto a new way of being and is reformed into something completely different. Of course, I know that change is often difficult to deal with because it makes us feel that we are on shifting and unstable ground. But, if our foundations are built on God and his unshakable love for us, then whatever life throws at us we may well find we have a firmer footing. That’s what the bible story about the man who built his house upon the rock verses the man who built his house upon the sand is all about. What are the foundations on which you have built your life? Will they sustain you through unnerving and disturbing times? Why not think about the ethos that underpins your world, your beliefs and values, your philosophy of life. Perhaps you could ask yourself if it or you might need to be modified in some way. God tells us that by travelling with him, by following his paths and learning about his will for us, we can be transformed, so that we receive the blessings or the gifts that change can bring, life in all its fullness. By making God the foundation stone onto which you place everything else in your life, you may find the ever changing world a much easier place to navigate. Enjoy the journey! From your friend and vicar, Reverend Jackie

ARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TENANTS’ AND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The Committee wished everyone a very Happy New Year at their first meeting of 2012, on 10 January. It is now almost six years since the group was formed, and it was noted that the original Secretary is still in post, but had hoped that new younger members would come along and start to take over the reins, particularly in the post of Secretary, who commented that she is not getting any younger, and has increasing family commitments. Members had recently enjoyed a Christmas lunch at the ever popular Styrrup Hall Golf Club, and even more recently to the pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Retford Majestic. This had been thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike, particularly the double entendres and ad libbing by an excellent cast. The committee pledged to plan earlier for the next one, thus enabling more people to join us, and will attempt to get seats in the front stalls (some aging members struggled with the stairs). Members noted that since the last meeting some problem areas (i.e. rubbish and street parking congestion) had been sorted out Information had been made available about how Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council deal with warden charging for vulnerable people and the elderly, and this will be taken forward to A1 Housing for their consideration. Members were also assured that a list is being compiled about who to contact for what service, and it is hoped to make this available for anyone to access at the Town Hall annex and possibly also the library. Steve Bowman attended on behalf of the Town Council, along with Dave Challinor, who is also Chair of the District Council. They answered members concerns about the lack of fines for those who drop litter and allow their dogs to foul the streets, passageways and parks around our town. Unfortunately the Town Council do not have a legal team to allow them to issue fines, but they are putting increasing pressure on Bassetlaw Council to do something about this, and said that concerned residents should also let the Chief Executive of the District Council know of their strong concerns. Members said they had been pleased with the Christmas lights around the town and had noted that they had improved. Steve told them this would be built on in the coming years, although he was unable to extend the lighting right around the town, due the cost, so the improvements will be limited to the shop front area, along with other improvements, such as further rubbish and dog bins around the Wimpey estate, planted areas at the junctions of Droversdale and Waterslack Roads and Scrooby Road, along with new town signage at the various entrances to the Town, which should be in place very shortly, which are to be paid for by Nottinghamshire County Council. The street cleaners and their role was also under discussion and Steve assured members that this was constantly monitored, but residents can air their concerns by contacting either himself or his deputy at the Town Hall. Some members undertook to do mini litter picks around their own immediate neighbourhoods and Town Council will provide bags etc., and will collect the full bags. Concerns were expressed about the number of grates which had been stolen by metal thieves around the Town, members were assured that this has been passed to County Council to deal with. It is hoped that they can look at alternative materials which have no value to metal thieves, who disrupt everyone’s lives with their greed, even stealing one of our new grit bins the day after it was installed. These bins now contain some concrete as a deterrent! At The Town Hall The next meeting of the group will take place on Pot of Tea 50p Tuesday 7 February 2012, starting at 10.30 am, at the Mug of Tea 50p Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is Mug of Coffee 60p welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/ Cup of Coffee 60p Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make Toasted Teacake 50p new friends and learn some new facts in the process. Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take Buttered Scone 60p place. We would particularly welcome anyone from an Jam 5p ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. Open between 10 – 12 noon – so please come and join us. Home-cooking key to slim success this Optimising plan is based on – foods like New Year says local slimming expert! fruit and vegetables, rice, pasta, potatoes, A recent survey found that only one in four meals is home-cooked yet a local slimming expert from Bawtry says it’s easy to create healthy and delicious dinners in your own kitchen and far more effective if you want to shape up this New Year. Nicky, who runs a Slimming World group in Bawtry says: “Often people find it difficult to lose weight because they’re not confident in the kitchen or they’re just too busy to cook so they rely on takeaways and ready meals, which are loaded with salt and fat. They might be put off slimming because they think they won’t have the time to cook healthy meals from scratch. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated and lots of great classic meals are actually quick, simple and cheap to make at home.” Now a new book of all-in-one recipes from Slimming World proves her point perfectly with 100 mouth-watering meals that can be made easily in just one pot and they’re sure to become family favourites fast. Nicky says: “People have so little time these days and busy lifestyles play havoc with our waistlines. Every week at Slimming World members pick up new ways of shopping, cooking and eating healthily with as little fuss as possible, and research among our members has found that they buy more fresh produce and eat less fatty food than before they joined Slimming World. Better yet, they encourage their families and friends to eat more healthily too. They swap recipes ideas and let each other know about supermarket offers they’ve seen so they find they spend less money on takeaways and ready meals. “Slimming World’s new cook book is perfect for this time of year. After the excesses of Christmas, lots of people want to lose a few pounds and the cold weather means we all crave comfort foods. The recipes in the Extra Easy All in One book include family favourites like Old-Fashion Shepherd’s Pie, Cheesy Vegetable Pasta Bake and Fast Fish

ickhill & District Lions We’ve got a lot of people to thank this month. Firstly we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 13th of December. To the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale. During December we helped Santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations. Santa’s reindeer won’t have gone hungry on Christmas Eve as children of all ages sprinkled magic reindeer food to guide Rudolph and his friends to their home. So thank you to all of you who supported us by purchasing Reindeer food, and again a big thank you to all of the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the food. And of course a big thank you to the many, many more people who have supported us at our fundraising events throughout 2011. At Tickhill & District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you’ve given will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year. So thank you once again from Tickhill & District Lions and from all of the people that your donations will help!

A Great New Event for 2012

Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields. The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield. Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and families, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate. Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said “We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous, we had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone”. Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.“ The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years “We have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill exactly. The run appeals to the new jogger as well as the seasoned athlete and it’s great that it is in a place as accessible as Doncaster”. Entry to the event is £18 for UKA Members and £20 for standard entry. Fun Run entries cost £8. Online registration for both the Run Doncaster 10k and the Community Challenge Fun Run is available NOW at www.metrestomiles.co.uk

RESONANCE – HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TODAY’S MUSIC SECTION REVIEW: John Merrick’s Remains at the Vintage Rock Bar, 30th December 2011 Local duo John Merrick’s Remains can be summed up by the phrase ‘weird and wonderful’. Two thirds electro-rockers and one third gothic cinema experience...they don’t do gigs, they do performances. Dressed in masks and black (mostly leather) garb they are totally immersed in their sound which is hard to pin down, but if you baked Marilyn Manson in an oven turned to maximum Numan, with a pinch of Bauhaus and a dash of Soft Cell, the result would be a black iced, metal studded JMR cake. Tonight they are playing in the Vintage Rock Bar in Doncaster, which is like a dungeon and just adds to the whole audio/ visual experience. Here is my condensed review of the gig...erm...I mean performance: As the saw-tooth waves pulsates in opener ‘Breath’ it’s apparent that JMR are on fine form and encouraged by a decent crowd singer Joolz breaks down the barriers between band and audience by stepping over the monitors and singing amongst the gathered throng. His voice is finely balanced somewhere between Neil Diamond and Dave Vanian of the Damned; this may sound wrong but in the context of the music it works pretty well. New song ‘Open the Box’ written in collaboration with Doncaster band Spekulus takes them down a more gore-metal route with sharp guitars adding an extra dimension to their synth-noise. Bob on keys frantically nods his head to every bass beat and hits notes as if his life depended on it. ‘Hollow Man’ and ‘Dear John’ from their second album are the standout tracks of the evening and show the extremes of their sound, which can swing from synth-pop to vintage punk and everything in-between. As the band burst into JMR classic ‘Leatherface’ all hands are raised and shake in unison to the rhythm of the chorus vocal. It’s has a super addictive melody but the chainsaw and scream samples which appear in the musical breaks are sure to give me nightmares...I’m going home to check under my bed and sleep with the light on. JMR and Spekulus will be playing at the Hallcross in Doncaster on Saturday 18th February 2012 to promote the Lament Configuration EP which features both bands. John Merrick’s Remains can be followed on facebook or www.johnmerricksremains.co.uk. 18 | HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

Going Solar - Should You?

Since April 2010 when the government announced massive new incentives for making the switch, there has been a huge surge in the solar power industry, but recent changes to this incentive scheme (effective 12 December) demand the question, “Is it worth it?” Solar panel systems, also known as solar photovoltaics (PV) consist of small solar cells wired together to form larger panels. These panels are fitted to roofs which ideally face south. Although direction is not critical, the amount of electricity produced will depend upon the amount of sunlight received. The solar cells capture the sun’s energy and convert it to electricity which can be used in the home for lighting and to run household appliances. It is estimated that a solar installation could meet around 40-50% of a household’s annual electricity consumption. Electricity can only be generated during daylight hours, and it cannot be stored. When it is not possible to generate your own electricity, for example when it is dark, electricity is supplied by your utility company. Under the government’s Feed In Tariff (FIT), any electricity produced and used by the householder is free and the excess is sold to the national grid where it is bought by utility companies for supply to other consumers. In addition to the savings and potential earnings already outlined, you also get paid for generating the electricity in the first place. Although there is still money to be earned by switching to solar, the amount is substantially less than it was before the recent changes, so the cost of installation needs to be taken into consideration to determine whether or not it is a financially sound investment. The cost for a typical solar system is around £10,000, and the estimated earnings and electricity bill savings over a 25year period can be as much as £20,000, possibly more if electricity costs continue to rise These figures are dependent on the size and direction of the installation though, and how much of the generated electricity you manage to take advantage of— you can visit the Energy Saving Trust website to personalise these calculations to meet your own circumstances. Advice on the Money Saving Expert website suggests that unless you are able to pay outright for the installation of the panels, the cost of a loan or credit could dwarf any savings made, so the decision to switch to solar should be made very carefully. But for many it can be a sound investment. Of course, there are other issues at stake here. It’s not all about money! By going solar, you will be using a free and renewable source of energy which doesn't release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. By reducing your personal carbon footprint you will be helping to ensure that the planet will still be here for your grandchildren and their children to enjoy in years to come! We are looking for new volunteers to join our local fundraising group. The Dukeries branch meets once a month over a drink or two, to organise events in the Retford and Worksop area. From coffee mornings and tombola stalls, to street collections and sponsored walks, there are many ways in which we raise vital funds for Guide Dogs. If you would like to get involved and become a Guide Dogs volunteer, then please call Pam White (District Fundraiser) on 07879 432181 or email Pam.White@guidedogs.org.uk To find out more about just how rewarding volunteering for Guide Dogs can be, please visit the website at: www.guidedogs.org.uk/supportus/volunteering/
