Care home fees – a clearer picture By Toby Burnett solicitor, based in the Doncaster office of Yorkshire Law firm Keeble Hawson LLP The potential costs of residential care worry many families, and rightly so. Almost one in five people who need residential care after the age of 65 face a bill of more than £100,000. The state does not generally help with the cost of residential care fees if someone has savings and assets of more than £23,250. It is estimated that around 20,000 people have to sell their homes each year to pay for their residential care, in many cases despite having paid taxes and national insurance contributions for their whole working lives. There are a number of urban myths and misunderstandings about planning for care home fees in the future – including schemes that involve making a gift of your property in to trust. It’s really important to get sound legal advice when considering options and making choices, as every case is individual and you need to be sure you have made the right Toby Burnett decisions. Happily, there are real options that can help you to plan ahead and feel more secure about your future care and your home. There are solicitors who specialise in this field, who can offer an initial consultation to make you aware of real choices and what would be right for you and your circumstances. Moving forward, making plans and looking ahead to the future are part of life – with the right guidance ironing out some of the bumps on the road ahead can be easier than you think.

HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TENANTS’ AND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION At the meeting on Tuesday 3 May, members discussed the Easter Fayre, which took place on Easter Saturday 23 April. Some local people had said it wasn’t advertised enough, but with a notice in the last Town Life, posters in most shops, library, leisure centre, Town Hall, all Town notice boards, and an announcement on Trax FM, it is difficult to know how much more advertising we can do. One person said she had seen no posters whilst actually standing next to a poster in a local shop, which had been displayed for a full two months. Perhaps people keep their eyes on the ground – maybe we should advertise on the pavements!! The disco which was set to follow was attended by only five youngsters. Anyone hearing youngsters saying there is nothing to do should remind them that when we give up our time to entertain them they cannot be bothered to turn up. We were even giving Easter eggs away. Those who did make it to the afternoon event all agreed that it was a good afternoon, with some delicious home made cakes made by one of our newer, younger members, Matthew Waddell. It transpired that some members, mainly from The Green and the Wimpey estate, had not received their copies of the new Harworth & Bircotes Today, but this will be remedied by speaking to Paula Mickley who puts the magazine together. At a previous meeting a member had said there were problems with the bus service around the Bircotes estate, but a Town Councillor reported that on speaking with Stagecoach he was assured there were no plans to stop this service and there were no current problems. Copies of the new Community Charter are now available to all. Members were looking forward to the trip to the Wildlife Park on 1 June, when we should be able to see the lions, tigers, meerkats etc. The new leopards will still be in quarantine until late summer. Two new ex officio members were appointed to the committee – Margaret Ingram and Matthew Waddell. This will help to spread the load and help the existing committee. It should enable us to plan further events. Also two new members were welcomed to the group at this meeting, and this now means that we have several younger members, who will be able to carry on the good work in the future. We are now nearer to achieving our aim of providing a football and basketball practice wall for the Wimpey Estate, and hope this can be achieved in time for the summer holidays. The Pantry coffee shop at the Town Hall, and the bookstall, are both continuing to flourish, and helpAt The Town Hall ing to boost our funds, and all members are urged EVERY THURSDAY MORNING to pass on the word to everyone. FROM 10 AM TO 12.30 The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 7 June 2011, starting at 10.30 am, at the Pot of Tea 50p Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is Mug of Tea 50p welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/ Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe Mug of Coffee 60p make new friends and learn some new facts in the Cup of Coffee 50p process. Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take place. We would particularly welcome Toasted Teacake 50p anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people Buttered Scone (with jam) 55p with fresh new ideas. Currently we have a membership with an average Biscuits 12p age of about 70, and are conscious that we are getting older and need to be able to pass the reins Browse around our bookstall, on to the younger generation – so please come and Meet your friends for a chat or join us. read the newspapers Judy Turner - Chair (746393) Marilyn Knight – Treasurer (744182) Manned by the Harworth/Bircotes Janet Flynn – Secretary (751628) Tenants & Residents Association Lynda Ridgway – Vice Chair (746279)

A Message from the Vicarage It was David Bowie who sang about ‘Ch…ch…ch… changes.’ I often hear people say that ‘folk don’t like change’, but that isn’t entirely true. We embrace change easily if we see the benefits. I can’t imagine there are many people living in our community who haven’t changed their peggy tub and posser for a front loading washing machine, and I’m constantly amazed by the number of grand parents who communicate with grand children not by letter but via text, email or Skype. The evidence is clear. People generally feel that there’s nothing wrong with change as long as it benefits them. But what happens when changes are made for the benefit of others? That makes things a little more complicated. There’s no objection to an amendment to the way we do things if ‘I’ can see ‘I’ profit from it - but accepting change which is made because it helps someone else appears harder for people to swallow. And that’s very sad. Jesus told us very clearly that our lives should be dedicated to the service of others. The prayer by Saint Ignatius of Loyola plainly explains our duty as Christians. ‘Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labour and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do your will.’ It’s a tall order, especially when that means we have to change the way we do things to ensure the common good and achieve what’s best for others rather than for ourselves. There’s no getting away from it. Change is necessary and it won’t always directly or evidently help ‘you’. But that doesn’t mean change should be blocked or considered to be a negative. The next time something changes in your world, stop for a moment before you ‘knock it.’ Is the change designed to benefit your neighbour? Is the change intended to help the children, help their parents or carers, help the poor, help the sick, help the aged, help the prisoner, help the oppressed? If so, by accepting the change you are following Christ’s directive in Matthew Chapter 25, that by doing something to help others, you are doing something for Christ. But of course, the reverse is true too. ‘Truly, I tell you’, says Jesus, ‘just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’ As we move towards the middle of our year, why not make a mid-year resolution? Flower Baskets for Sale ‘I resolve to accept change, even if I am not its chief beneficiary.’ Or what about, ‘I resolve to All proceeds to All Saints Church funds. be positive about change, encouraging those who bring about change for the benefit of others.’ With a little more of this kind of thinking, which might be described as ‘God’s Kingdom Thinking’, we may find we are living in a kindlier community, which is surely something that benefits us all. From your friend and vicar, Reverend Jackie Saturday 4th June from 9am
at the Co-op in Harworth.
Brighten your garden with a hanging basket and help All Saints Church with its fundraising. We need £35,000 this year to cover our general running costs. Can you give us a helping hand and make your garden look pretty too?

Not Just for Girls!
It’s official! Pilates is not just for girls. Styrrup is the new home to ‘Pilates 21’, offering mixed daytime classes & an evening class ‘Especially for Guys’. Pilates aims to stretch, strengthen & tone the whole body, is suitable for all ages & abilities & can help people recover from injury. Level 3 Instructor Suzanna Rose trained in Modern Pilates with leading fitness expert Cherry Baker. Modern Pilates offers a unique clinically based approach to Pilates, training is by physiotherapists & specialist Pilates professionals. Current members of the class would be the first to admit that they thought Pilates ‘was aimed at girls in leotards’, but it’s now a regular fixture… followed by a drink in the bar …for relaxation purposes!! The guys enjoy the banter in class, the relaxation & escape from the stresses of work. Pilates gives them an hour of ‘headspace’ to focus on exercise and discover muscles they didn’t know they had! When they tell other friends that they go to a ‘Guys Only’ Pilates class the usual comment is ‘you’re having a laugh aren’t you?’…they now reply, ‘actually we are!’ Classes at Styrrup Hall Golf & Country Club, Health & Fitness. Open to both members & non-members of the gym, run on a 6 week programme at £4 per session or on a ‘pay as you go’ basis at £4.50 per session. Resonance: Harworth & Bircotes Today’s Music Section
Interview: Nexus Noise and Deemus Mint Local new wave punk rockers Nexus Noise and ska combo Deemus Mint have both recently reformed after an incredible 3 decade hiatus from the music scene. As they both prepare to play at the Welfare Hall Resonance interviews Sam (drums), Ray (guitar) and Wink (vocals) from NN and Mick (bass) and Kev (sax) from Deemus Mint to discuss past glories, what got them back together and what the future holds for both bands. Resonance: How did you both form and when did you split? Wink (NN): We formed in 1979, initially as Red Attack. Sam was still at school and I’d just left. We practiced in the cellar of the Paramore Hotel. We soundproofed it with egg boxes. Ray (NN): I was asked to join the band when I got back from a trip to Italy after the original guitar player left to go to Uni. Wink (NN): We eventually split in 1982 when we became disillusioned with synthesiser music. Mick (DM): I was in a band with the original DM bass player who isn’t in the band this time around. Steve (drums) and Johnny (guitar) were in another band. We lost our drummer and guitarist so we placed an ad in the paper. Steve and Johnny responded, we got together and hit it off immediately. We started in 1979 and split in 1982. Resonance: So you were both active at the same time, did your paths cross? Sam (NN): we were aware of DM but we never got the chance to play together. It would have been great if we had. Who did you play with? Mick (DM): We supported Bad Manners, UB40 and Average White Band. The best gig we did was at the Marquee in London. Motorhead had been there the night before and had trashed the place, it was a right tip. Ray (NN): The highlight of our career was supporting The Lords of the New Church at Retford Porterhouse, Preston Warehouse and Sheffield Limit Club. Wink (NN): They were like a punk rock super group with Stiv Bators from The Dead Boys, Brian James from The Damned, Dave Tregunna from Sham 69 and Nicky Turner from The Deemus Mint Then Barracudas. Sam (NN): It was brilliant because they were bigger shows for us with an amazing sound. Do you have any standout memories? Mick (DM): Nearly getting signed to a big label. Kev (DM): Our manager messed everything up and the company offered the contract to Spandau Ballet. Wink (NN): The Lords of the New Church was the standout for me as it was exciting and we were playing to people who really wanted to hear our type of music. Deemus Mint Now What made you decide to get back together again? Sam (NN): We got back together for our Steve’s (Sam’s brother) Birthday. I asked him what he wanted for his birthday and he said it would be brilliant if Nexus got back together for 1 night only. Our original bass player is on cruise ships so Steve stepped in as bass player. Ray (NN): ...and now we keep getting asked to play, they won’t let me retire. Mick (DM): We’ve been trying to get back together for ages. Charlie the keyboard player in my current band suggested getting DM back together. It just seems that with the album launch party at the Welfare Hall that the timing is right. Nexus Then What does the future hold for you both? Sam (NN): We’re playing at the Vintage Rock Bar in Doncaster on 22nd July. Wink (NN): We just want to play to people and enjoy it. Mick (DM): We’re looking forward to the Royal Rampage at the Welfare Hall and if things go ok we may do the Harworth and Bircotes Music Festival in August. Babies Everywhere!!!!! There is nothing like the birth of animals to renew your passion for working with animals, and we have certainly had a lot of births on the farm this month. A wander round the farm and you cannot help notice that it is bursting with new life. Annie gave birth to her Dexter calf Pascal who was an extremely large healthy boy, I am amazed that she delivered him unassisted. Then the two Tamworth Sows, Tammy and Tabby farrowed their litters 6 hours apart giving us 17 chunky Tamworth x GOS piglets, some will be staying with us and others will be sold to smallholders to rear on. Followed 2 days later by Truffles my Vietnamese Potbellied Sow with her tiny piglets – all of these have now found lovely pet homes for when they are old enough to leave mum. We have several escape hens who have managed to evade capture and have incubated clutches of eggs so we now have the lovely sight of chicks wandering everywhere. The coming weeks should see more new additions with 2 more Vietnamese Potbellied sows and a KuneKune sow all due to farrow. My Toggenburg Nanny Goats both should kid along with my Southdown sheep lambing, so it’s an extremely exciting summer ahead of us. Anyone wishing to give a home to an animal whether it be a pig, goat, sheep, cow, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, hen or duck please call Fiona on 07879 427857 for more information or pop down to Corner farm on a morning to view the animals.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council Pages Local Elections This has been a busy time for the people of Harworth and Bircotes, who were asked to vote for a District Councillor, Town Councillors (West Ward), and on the Alternative Vote. The results are as follows: District Councillor: June Evans Town Councillors East Ward : June Evans, Janet Flynn, Frank Hart, Marilynn Knight, Brian Letherland, Elaine Nettleship, Robert Turner. West Ward: Steve Barns, David Challinor, Sheena Dean, Deborah Foote, Gillian Wratten, Mathew Wratten. Frequently Asked Question: How much is a Town Councillor paid? Answer: Nothing, it is purely voluntary; nor is there any payment for expenses. Only District Councillors receive an allowance. Our Town. Did you know that your Town Council has a Strategic Development Plan for your Community? It lists key goals, objectives and actions designed to make Harworth and Bircotes a better place to live. (Copies are available from the Town Clerk). One goal is to improve the appearance of our Town, and we have received some positive comments on our efforts. This year we intend having hanging baskets along the shopping area and on Main Street, and we are also planning flower beds. Anyone with ideas on what else they would like to see, please contact Steve Bowman on 752642. Public Toilets and Community Information Centre. You may have noticed the toilets are closed (though the facilities in the Town Hall are available to everyone); this is because Bassetlaw District Council has agreed to update them. So at last you will have modern facilities, baby change units, hot water and hand driers! The Community Information Centre – previously known by everyone as the Rent Office – now serves the public by housing a number of agencies for you to contact if you need them. The decision by Bassetlaw to stop rent payments there meant that the building could have fallen into disuse; this Council took the decision to purchase it, maintain statutory services and introduce others that benefit the Community. Services available are:A.M. P.M. Monday Bassetlaw District Council Bassetlaw District Council A1 Housing Tuesday Credit Union Weds Bassetlaw District Council A1 Debt Recovery (by appt. only) Friday Bassetlaw District Council Notts. County Contact The Community Information Centre is also used by other services, as and when required e.g. Framework, Business Link. A New Machine The Town Council has purchased a new ride-on grass cutting machine to replace the current mower that has required frequent repairs in recent years. The new model is much more versatile and has attachments that make it multi-functional e.g. it makes it possible to cut grass across a wider range of different areas, it can be used as a small snow plough in adverse weather, and a trailer can be attached for gritting/salting. Where will you see it being used? In both cemeteries, on grassed areas around the Town, and on the streets if there is adverse weather.
Forward Planning For Christmas Lights Yes, I know it isn’t yet summer, but already Council is planning for the Christmas Lighting Event. Every year we replace a few of the older displays, and usually we have a Christmas tree. Sadly, the tree has become a target for vandals over the last few years, so this year the silver birch tree growing on the front of the car park will be decorated and lit instead. The lights will be left permanently in place, switched on every Christmas, and hopefully be beyond the reach of those who enjoy ruining the enjoyment of others. Bingo In The Town Hall There is a weekly Bingo session every Thursday from 1.00p.m. to 3p.m. There are 6 ordinary games, 2 flyers and a raffle, plus refreshments. What else are we planning? We have purchased a projector, with the intention of holding a cinema session for the younger children BUT we need volunteers. Anyone interested, please contact Steve Bowman on 752642. Connecting Communities The next meeting of the Community Champions is July 27 th, 6 – 7.30p.m. The discussion will focus on what the Town Council does/is trying to achieve for Harworth and Bircotes, and suggestions from the public on the best use of the remaining funds from the project. If you want to know more or are interested in attending a meeting, ring Helen Rodger on 746464 or Steve Bowman, Town Clerk, on 01302 752642 Friday 13th May saw a Press Conference held at the Town Hall. What was it about? - a proposal for a Local Enterprise Zone which has been submitted for consideration to Sheffield City Regional Local Enterprise Partnership. Following the Government announcement about creating Enterprise Zones, Bassetlaw District Council identified Harworth and Bircotes as an ideal area for their proposal, as our Town is already recognised as key for housing development and employment growth. Where would it be? – on a site adjacent to the A1, near to Blyth roundabout. What would it mean to our Community? – business organisations operating locally, jobs, and an improved economy. What happens next? We don’t know if we will be successful, we have to wait for a decision, but the proposal is strongly supported by John Mann, M.P. Good News! We have learned that Nottinghamshire County Council has awarded our Town funding from their Local Initiative Scheme. We will receive money so that we can purchase 2 benches, and a Youth Shelter to be sited on the Tommy Simpson Field. And there’s more.... we will be getting 5 gateway signs for each road entrance into our Community. Each sign will have a different picture portraying past aspects of the Town e.g. the sign at the entrance into Bircotes will feature Tommy Simpson, and the sign on Styrrup Road will feature the church. N.B. This is the third year we have received funds from the Local Initiative Scheme; in previous years we got absolutely nothing!
Town Council Meetings will be held in the Town Hall Scrooby Road Harworth. 18th April, 16th May (AGM), 20th June, 18th July, 19th September 17th October, 21th November, 19th December ROOMS IN THE TOWN HALL AVAILABLE FOR: GROUP MEETINGS & PUBLIC MEETINGS COURSES & EXHIBITIONS SOCIAL EVENTS & PRIVATE FUNCTIONS Contact Helen on 01302 746464 for bookings

DOG FOULING IN HARWORTH CEMETERY. It has been reported that some residents visiting the Cemetery are allowing their dogs to foul on graves or cremation plots in your Cemetery. This practice is disgraceful and shows a total lack of respect. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and owners are required to remove any dog mess deposited. Anyone witnessing someone allowing a dog to foul and not clearing up after their pet should inform the Town Clerk (Steve Bowman) on 752642 or directly to the Cemetery Manager (Trevor Jones).

COMMUNITY PAYBACK
The Chairman of Harworth & Bircotes Town Council (Councillor Mrs June Evans) met with the Chief Executive and Director for Community Payback (Mrs Jane Geraghty) Mr Mark Taylor and Ms Lindsay Narey on the 10th of May 2011 to thank the Probation Service for works completed in the Town. The visitors were taken to several locations in the Town including Droversdale Wood where a total of 35 skips of rubbish had been removed; Harworth Cemetery where repairs to boundary fencing and repainting had been completed; Harworth new Cemetery where a full planting scheme had been undertaken which have benefitted Harworth and Bircotes. Council are delighted to have the assistance of the Pay Back teams and the support of the Nottinghamshire Probation Service. Other future projects were discussed including the decoration of the Annexe when the building is purchased from Bassetlaw District Council and grounds maintenance improvements to the new Cemetery. Having a barbecue? – Don’t invite a thief. It’s usually around this time of the year when dad decides to dust off the barbecue, put on his apron and indulge in his annual spot of cooking. Yes, with the light nights and warm summer weather it’s barbecue time once again, but it is important that you do not invite an unwanted guest to your party – a burglar. And you probably won’t even know they have been, until it’s too late. Like you and me, thieves just love barbecues… warm summer weather…open windows…open doors…and everyone outside enjoying themselves. Exactly the conditions a sneak thief is looking for. The opportunities for sneak in burglaries always increase at this time of year but they are relatively easy to prevent. A few simple precautions will keep a sneak thief out while you enjoy your barbecue. People think ‘It can’t happen to me’, but it can – and it does. So, I’ve put together a few points for you to remember, these will keep your home secure while you enjoy a carefree summer evening outdoors. Never leave windows open if you are not in the room. An open window is an open invitation to a thief. And never go out and leave windows open. If you are out in the back garden, make sure ALL the doors and windows at the front are locked and secured. Don’t leave your car keys or other valuables on the hall table or by a window.
A thief will break a window to snatch your keys and valuables – and then come back later for the car. Don’t leave garden tools and furniture out all night. It might be a nuisance putting them away every night, but at least you’ll know they will be there the next time you want them, and a thief cannot use them to break into your house. Remember to lock your garage and garden shed every night, using a good strong lock. If your shed has a window, cover it with a curtain so a thief cannot see what is inside. Chain larger items together to make them difficult for a thief to take away and use a marker pen to mark your property with your postcode and house number. These are just common sense precautions that everyone can take to make sure you enjoy the summer and a thief doesn’t. And, a final word of warning to careless householders. If you do leave windows and doors open and you are burgled, you could receive a further nasty shock when you try to make an insurance claim. A lot of insurance companies are now reducing payments or even refusing to pay out altogether if doors and windows have been left open, arguing that it is your negligence that has led to the theft.
For more information on combating crime, you can contact your Safer Neighbourhood Team Beat Manager, PC Nathan Thomas on 07525 226694 or PCSO Steph Jones on 07525 226854. If you know who is committing crime in your area, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, and you may be able to claim a cash reward. Local children’s charity is another casualty of recent budget cuts Bassetlaw Play Forum, a long established children’s charity is fighting to remain open and to continue to provide widespread opportunities for children of all ages. First established in 1983, the Play Forum has, over the years, served thousands of children throughout Bassetlaw and neighbouring areas. It supports the child’s right to play and develop by providing varied activities in many different settings. Wherever possible the Play Forum use recycled materials for their activities, which are sourced from businesses in the region. Activities take place in various settings including parks, schools, holiday clubs, after school clubs and are made inclusive, providing opportunities for children of all abilities. The charity supports and promotes events for families with children having special educational needs and it offers opportunities for adults through its volunteer programme. Creative workshops are held regularly, giving people the chance to learn and share new skills. As a result of recent budget cuts the charity is struggling.
