There is certainly no shortage of Flags and Bunting about the place - so many groups and businesses making a real effort to decorate our streets. It seems the whole of the UK has Jubilee Fever - and I for one will be joining in and celebrating the achievements of our Queen. The next edition will be distributed to you from 30th June. message from the Vicarage
It is with very mixed feelings that I write to say that I will be leaving All Saints at the end of July. I have been offered a post with the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham as a Ministry Development Adviser. This is a wonderful opportunity for me to work alongside clergy and churchgoers, helping them to grow as modern day disciples, learn more about the faith they profess and how to share that faith with others. My time here has been filled with so many joys and challenges, and everyone I have met has helped me develop as a priest and a person in some way. For your contribution in helping me be a better me, I thank you. I would also like to thank some special individuals. Firstly, Steve Bowman, Clerk to the Town Council, who has been a great help to me and to All Saints Church. He has a real heart and a care for this community and the town is very lucky to be served by him and his team. I also want to thank Walter Pearson and Trevor Jones who have supported me, made me laugh when I wanted to cry and who took me to my beloved Anfield to watch Liverpool FC play. Their friendship has been very special to me and to my son. The pupils and staff of All Saints School have been amazing. Weekly visits there have always been a pleasure and a joy, and I thank them and especially Headteacher Kerrie Clowes and Office Manager Cathy Heggie for the help they have given to me and to the church. And of course there is the congregation at All Saints Church. Thanks to the former Churchwardens I have worked alongside, Margaret Grant & Les Batty and all who help to keep the show on the road. Special thanks go to my current Wardens and Assistant Warden, Julie Dodd, Bryan Oliver, and Ann Wilson. They
have given me such encouragement and support both personally and professionally. There are so many others – too many to name here - but over the next few weeks I will have the opportunity to speak to more people face to face to say thank you. I won’t ever forget my four years here in this parish. You welcomed me into your lives and I can see how God has provided me with skills and gifts during this time which equip me as I move onto a very new way of life. I hope I have been able to bring something of God into your lives and I will of course continue to keep you in my thoughts and prayers. The impact that Harworth, Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley Hall have had on my life with be with me always. My final Sunday will be 29th July and I begin my new role on 3rd September. I am also starting, (that very week) an MA in Consultancy in Mission and Leadership, so everything is changing and it will all be a great challenge. It will be very strange not to be a parish priest, and that will, I am sure, take some getting used to. So, please keep me in your thoughts and prayers. And once again, thank you for all you have taught me and all you have given me. From your friend and vicar, Reverend Jackie Johnson

ARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TENANTS’ AND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION 8 Members to attend a Food Hygiene Course to be held at the Town Hall 29th May Secretary read out a letter from Ann Hickman secretary of the Retford Branch of the Royal British Legion, thanking the members for the very generous gifts for the parcels for the troops in Afghanistan. This is a very important part of the support for the troops serving out there, as not only is a few extra treats for them, but it reinforces how much we appreciate their efforts in such a very dangerous area. We collect all year round for the British Troops; we have a box in the Devonshire Road Centre off Bawtry Road gifts are welcome. Letter Dated 24th April 2012 from Nott CC Re: request for new bus shelter Milne Road Bircotes; Now that a request has been made, it has gone onto our request list for the North. This list can take several months to get to the top of as we work on first come first served basis, with the exception being any stop that that can be included on any larger projects (there are currently no projects planned in this area). The letter goes on to say that the waiting list is currently 12 months and could be longer with current budgetary constraints. Any one wanting to read the full letter the secretary and Jane Vernon have copies. Jane made contact with Notts CC Transport & Travel Services in January this year and this is the only response to date. Frank Raspin reported that Harworth & Bircotes are no longer part of Partnership Plus but a new group is to be set up to which H & B will be part of. eep your pet smiling! Did you know that it’s just as important to look after your pet’s teeth as it is your own? Dental disease affects 70% of adult cats and dogs and is mainly preventable. As with humans, pets can suffer from dental disease which can lead to further health problems such as heart, liver and kidney disease. Signs that your pet is suffering from dental disease include: bad breath, unpleasant looking teeth and a reduced appetite or weight loss. Feeding your pet dry food and giving them special dental chews can help keep your pet’s mouth healthy. You can also brush your pet’s teeth with a special brush and pet specific toothpaste – ask your vet for advice on how best to approach this. And finally, book your pet in for a check-up! A dental check with a vet or nurse can help spot potential problems early on and they can advise whether your pet needs a scale and polish to keep those teeth sparkling clean. Doncaster Vets4Pets now open in Wheatley, Armthopre and Edenthorpe.

This photograph was taken 60 years ago in 1952 at the time of the Queens Coronation and if you look closely you will see pictures of the Queen, a long live the Queen banner and Union Jacks etc in the window. The shop is now better known to many of you as Ellies Hair Room. Ellie was given the photograph by her father-in-law whose mother Nina Hipwell (nee Smith) worked in the shop at the time of the Coronation

My name is Emma Kirk, I live in Harworth, and over the summer I will be volunteering abroad in Australia, with the charity, International Student Volunteers. I am currently studying Biological Sciences with Biomedicine at Lancaster University and came across this life changing opportunity. I leave on the 19th of July and will be assigned approximately 80 hours of conservation volunteer work that will hopefully make a difference as well as provide me with new and valuable skills. But of course opportunities such as this one can be a little costly, which is why I would like to thank all the people who have been involved, donated and made my trip possible! The Blacksmiths Arms in Harworth have been a tremendous help, by providing the venue for the band night which took place over the Christmas period, the night was a great success and thanks to all the local bands who played. A raffle took place with donations from the Blacksmiths Arms (meal for 2 and wine) along with other donations from Nestle York (a hamper of confectionary), Hipwell Motors, Brunel Ind Est. (a free MOT test) and CDH British Super sport racing team, Dean Hipwell (two entry and paddock tickets). Local businesses have also taken an interest such as Liftex Engineering & Technical Services (Harworth) who have very kindly donated £100, and AK Roofing Specialists (Harworth) have also given me a cheque for £200. The Tickhill Lions club (pictured) have also donated £250 towards my trip, I am very appreciative and I am glad they see the potential in this good cause. So far, through donations from businesses and family and friends and fundraising I have managed to raise over £1500, this is brilliant and I would just like to say thanks again If any other businesses would like to help me on my journey please contact me at emmakirkisv@aol.com Emma Kirk

June Arts Review by Hilary Cartmel
The Season of Sculpture Parks is upon us. Once upon a time there was only the YSP and now everywhere you go you trip over sculpture lurking in herbaceous borders of stately homes and arboretums. Why do they do it?…well it must be because you - the cultural visitor enjoys them – and since they are all at it – there must be huge interest out there, the exhibitions keeps the gardens functioning and lively when the full flush of summer flowering is waning – these are hugely costly events to mount when you think about what darned heavy stuff sculpture is. Already open is Burghley at Stamford – famous for its equestrian 3 day event and fabulous Elizabethan mansion . The sculpture - a mixed exhibition entitled all encompassing ‘Fauna and Flora’ is sited in a lovely large garden of mixed areas which is of interest to plant and tree enthusiasts. Its worth the trip just to see the mistletoe in the parkland trees. http://www.burghley.co.uk/html/sculpture.html This summer the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton is exhibiting sculpture by the major 20th century Spanish surrealist artist Joan Miro. This continues until January 2013. YSP has become a day-out destination. A great café, fab shop and lots to look at in its vast grounds. Over the past few years the main summer exhibition has been by living contemporary sculptors. www.ysp.co.uk Closer to home is Doddington, just north of Newark. This is the first year that the gardens of Doddington have hosted sculpture and they are to site over 250 pieces by 60 sculptors which will be open through August. Doddington is a wonderful setting and an interesting Elizabethan house which has remained in the same family since it was built and one of only two whose original gardens that have not been updated and destroyed with ongoing garden design fashion through the centuries ( the other being Hardwick Hall). Doddington escaped this ignominy because the family owned other properties and didn’t bother to redesign this one! www.doddingtonhall.com A one week only sculpture event happens in Harpswell near Gainsborough from 16 to 24 June at Hall Farm, sited in the 3 acre garden. During this week there will be a craft tent, musicians performing at the weekends and plants for sale. www.the-ropewalk.co.uk/sap10/sap09.htm Leicester University Botanic Garden, 3 miles south of the city centre, has for the past 11 years staged a large exhibition of sculpture in its 16 acre site, attracting 30,000 visitors every year. This years show is entitled ‘Interesting Times’ . The curator has put together a group of sculptures that demonstrate that nature can be cruel and unpredictable whilst at the same time being beautiful. 1st July to 28 October. www2.le.ac.uk Also there is Chatsworth. From March to 1st July Anthony Caro’s sculpture surrounds the lake, and to finish off the season from 7 September until the end of October Sothebys will be clearing out their cupboards again and strewing stuff around the grounds. Last year’s Sothebys show, considering the hugeness and quantity of work was a big disappointment. It really did feel like they had found some stuff at the bottom of the old barrel and shipped it in. The most awful of all the work there were 2 enormous painted bronze Damien-enfant-terrible-Hurst horses ( a unicorn and a Pegasus) which were sited at the bottom end of the lake, like 2 bits of detritus blowing around a well loved beauty spot. One of my most un-favourite of British sculptors is Lynn Chadwick (1914 – 2003), - unemotional mannered stylised posed.... no - I am not a fan and I have to say I enjoyed his work the most. Enough said. B minus Sothebys. Lets hope there is some better work this year. Chatsworth does have its own permanent sculpture collection and the work that the Duke of Devonshire has commissioned and sited is much better. One of the most recent additions are huge woven structures near the kitchen garden by Derby based Laura Ellen Bacon. She worked on site weaving these bulbous shapes in willow over still rooted old trees. These alone are worth the entrance fee to the grounds. http://www.chatsworth.org/attractions/sculpture Tickhill Artist Bryan Day’s exhibition at Brevon Art, Doncaster Bryan Day was born in 1934 and brought up in Maltby and Tickhill before moving to Carlisle in 1959 . He now lives in Tickhill after 50 years away. After holding many one man shows throughout the UK and abroad, he is currently concentrating specifically on watercolour and has developed a semi-abstract approach to his work. Brevon Art, 6 Bass Terrace, Thorne Road, Doncaster DN1 2HZ 2nd until 29th June. The preview is Friday 1st June 7 - 9pm. www.brevonart.com 14 | HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

POLICE REPORT
Incidents of Note 1st April 2012 to the 30th April 2012 Burglary Dwelling 3 Burglary Other 3 Criminal Damage 8 Vehicle Crime 5 Theft Other 9 LOOKING TO THE PAST FOR A WAY FORWARD School children in Harworth swapped texting for tiddlywinks and wall posts for Ball Against the Wall during a day of old-fashioned fun and games. Decades after they were last in school, elderly residents from the village returned to the playground to show Year 4 and 5 pupils of Serlby Park Junior School how they used to have fun. Dozens of pensioners joined the Shrewsbury Road schoolchildren in outdoor and indoor games from a bygone era last on Friday 20th April 2012. The children turned back the clock and dressed in Victorian costume while playing hopscotch, spin top, marbles, jump rope, chess, French cricket, hula hooping and dominoes. The visitors also brought in photographs of themselves as children so that the pupils could compare them to the sepia-coloured images taken on the day. The event was the brainchild of Harworth PCSO Colin Haywood and a Helping Hands Award event, in support of the charity’s encouragement of community engagement for a better society. He said: “We thought we would run our own form of generation games in a bid to encourage the children to be more social, rather than having their heads in gadgets such as mobile phones, the Internet and computer games. “It also brings the youngsters and the older residents together on some common ground to hopefully illustrate to them that despite being at each end of the community spectrum, with years between them, they are not so different from each other.” While primarily an engagement exercise, PCSO Haywood hopes the session, and others like it, may be the answer to reducing antisocial behaviour in the future. He said: “If we can instill a bit of community sprit in these children now, in five years time, when they are the youths of tomorrow, they will hopefully have more of an understanding and respect for their neighbours, as well as their local police officers. “You could say we are looking backwards for a way forward.”

A MESSAGE FROM HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TOWN COUNCIL Four years ago Council wrote a 5 year Development Plan, which has 4 main goals: 1. Improve facilities and level of services available from the Town Hall 2. Upgrade the Town 3. Create a safer environment 4. Raise the Town profile I am pleased to report that many of those goals have been achieved. We now have a Town Hall fit for purpose, and a Community Information Centre where people can access other services such as A1 Housing, Bassetlaw District Council, and Notts. County Council. The cemetery has been upgraded, and preparations for a second cemetery are on course, our staff now have modern equipment, and a vehicle to enable them to do their job more efficiently. A lot of work has been done to improve and maintain the appearance of our Town. Council petitioned for, and got, speed signs and extra bus shelters, and we continue to work with the Police and other agencies in addressing antisocial behaviour. Harworth and Bircotes is now firmly on the map, both at District and County levels. Much work has been ongoing ‘behind the scenes’ with regards to future developments for our Town, and we are entering an exciting stage for both the Council and the people who live here. Last month we hosted a Localism Event for Nottinghamshire County Council and it was a great success; it seems H&B is regarded by County as a beacon Council for being proactive. We are viewed as a ‘doing’ Council, one that strives to get the best for the community, and one that delivers the desired results. The truth is this Council believes that, as the third largest community in Bassetlaw, the people who live here deserve better; and we intend to continue to try to get, and do, all that we can for our population. Much of our future development will be dependent on the economy and politics; we therefore have to work closely with District and County Councils. We need, therefore, to be well informed and to have a broader, far reaching plan that will map out potential development for the next 2 decades. Partnership working will be key to success. ‘Potential Developments’ means that not all will come to fruition, there are too many influencing factors beyond our control, so we will have to be flexible, too. Yes, we want many things: More Council houses Replacement of sub-standard housing New, private housing More business investment and development, and less unemployment Facilities that reflect and accommodate the needs of the population, including shops, parking and leisure All of this will not be achieved overnight; and yes, there is a degree of uncertainty. But one thing I am certain of is that this community will grow. Therefore we, as a Council, need to ensure that: we maintain high levels of professionalism and demonstrate we are open-minded, and have vision, and that we are fully involved in all decisions taken affecting our Town The people of Harworth and Bircotes can see that much has been achieved in our Town in recent years. It is therefore important that you continue to let this Council know what you want for the future. Cllr June Evans, Chairperson Harworth & Bircotes Town Council SPECIAL BY-ELECTION COST. The cost of holding the recent by-election in Harworth was £4232.03.
