A
message from the Vicarage
Christians are now immersed in the season of Lent. It’s often associated with a time of abstinence, a time when you give something up in recognition that Jesus gave up his life. It’s very much thought of as a sacrificial season. And there’s nothing wrong with that. However, it seems to have become quite easy to joke about giving up chocolate or gin for Lent, (sacrifices I personally have never chosen to make, even in Lent!), and in doing so, totally miss the point of the season itself. Lent is a time of penitence, a time of reflection. It’s an opportunity offered by the liturgical year to take a breather and look at life, the universe and everything and work out the answers to a few questions about who you are. For example, ‘How do people know that I am a Christian?’ ‘Is my faith obvious to others?’ ‘How do I need to change to be a better follower of God?’ ‘How can I be a better ME?’ Giving up chocolate might be a sacrifice, but I’m more likely to get irritable and therefore far less Christian - which means I’ve really missed the point of Lent altogether. Rather than giving something up for Lent, why not try taking up something for Lent. Perhaps it’s a better idea to take up the challenge of looking at your life and asking what needs to change to make you into a better neighbour, or friend or colleague. You don’t have to be a person of faith to use Lent wisely. None of us are perfect and those we spend our lives with could I’m sure tell us what our short-comings are. Why not try to assess them for yourself and make the run up to Holy Week and Easter a
time for perfecting yourself. We’re always going to miss that particular target, perfection that is, but we should never stop the process of trying to enhance or improve ourselves as human beings. And those who profess to be Christians should certainly hold to the ethos of the importance of life-long learning, searching, changing, and indeed transforming. Use this Lent, and later in the year Advent too, for that is another season given to us to use in the same way. Take a good long look at yourself. Write a list of your strengths, your good points, your talents. Then, write another list of your weaknesses, bad points, and those things you could learn to do better. Be honest with yourself, no one but you and God need know what you’ve confessed. Then of course, you have to make a commitment to changing. You could pray the following prayer: Father God, forgive those things I have done that need to be forgiven; help me to change what I am so that I can be a better person; direct my life and make me into the ME you want me to be. Amen. Use Lent well, and watch out for our Holy Week and Easter services. From your friend and vicar, Reverend Jackie

ARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TENANTS’ AND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION At the meeting on 7 February the Committee thanked everyone for turning out in such cold weather and braving the icy conditions. Members were pleased to learn that after writing to the Bassetlaw District Council’s Chief Executive, we had received a reply stating that training was taking place to allow local people to fine those who continue to allow their dogs to foul or who drop litter around the town. It was thought that those patrolling in our Town would be from other areas, to ensure there would be no acts of reprisal. It is hoped that this would see some reduction in the mindless littering and fouling of our children’s playing fields, and public footpaths. Members were also pleased to learn that at last we have a kick wall, of sorts, on the playing field at the rear of the flats at Thoresby Close. Most local residents were pleased to see that this is now an area where the youngsters can do what comes naturally – that is play. Although one nearby resident complained that they had not been consulted. It should be noted that this has always been a designated playing field, so it should not need public consultation when play equipment is installed. It is funny that some people cannot remember what it was like to be a child, but in this day and age when school playing fields have been reduced we should be doing all we can to encourage our young people to play outdoors, especially in this year of the Olympic Games in England. The equipment has been donated by Bassetlaw District Council after it was removed from The Canch in Worksop when it was updated. So we would like to see youngsters kicking a ball, or shooting into the net, and if it proves popular we should be able to get the new kick wall installed for the summer holidays alongside the existing structure. This should give all age groups something to practice with. Just get out there and use the equipment as soon as this icy weather passes. Information was passed around about the rent increases for council properties, and the proposed increases for the warden service are under discussion with A1 Housing, as there is a great deal of confusion about the charges. It was announced that a coach trip was planned for August to Knowsley Safari Park, and a trip to Blackpool illuminations for Autumn half term. Of course, TRA members and their families will be given first option for seats, and then it will be open to anyone from the Town. The Town Council representative said that there had been a visit by some members of Maltby Council, when there had been some interesting exchanges of ideas, and also a discussion about jointly trying to get something done about reinstating the bus service to Meadowhall. Members all agreed that this would be very popular with many residents of our Town, and with Maltby’s help it may be possible. A resident of Cumberland Close said that once again the lights were out, but felt this was due to the fact that the owner of the flats, who is responsible for the lights, has only put up temporary lighting, which is unsuitable for the job. There was a request for a bus shelter at Amanda Road, which is a very well used bus stop, and this request will be passed on to Notts County Council. A previous request for re-siting of a shelter on Milne Road had still not been dealt with, and this will be addressed at the same time as the request for one on Amanda Road. The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 6 March 2012, starting at 10.30 am, at the At The Town Hall Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/ Pot of Tea 50p Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make Mug of Tea 50p new friends and learn some new facts in the process. Mug of Coffee 60p Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually Cup of Coffee 60p take place. We would particularly welcome anyone Toasted Teacake 50p from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh Buttered Scone 60p new ideas. – so please come and join us. Jam 5p

GET INVOLVED! One of our local gyms has sent out a rallying call to all local residents young and old with the message to raise as much money as possible for charity while trying to get more physically active this Olympic year. Luke Walker, owner of Bawtry Health & Fitness Studio is also Exercise Therapist for the Rotherham Institute for Obesity (RIO) and deals with patients with low confidence, self esteem and health problems on a daily basis. “Up to 85% of the population don’t do any form of exercise regularly and I just wanted to use this Olympic year to get the message out there that everyone has the power to set themselves a target and train towards it”. He aims to get as many residents of Bawtry, Tickhill, Harworth & Bircotes participating in physical activity and as a result make as much money for some very worthwhile charities. He asks that If you cannot enter for medical reasons then please support your neighbourhood by sponsoring someone you know. If one person from each home does just 1 event then we can raise a lot of money for some very worthwhile Charities. Let’s come together as a community! To register for any of the events and get involved in any way you can visit his website. For further information call 01302 711152 or visit www.bawtryhealthandfitness.co.uk

ickhill & District Lions This month, Tickhill and District Lions Club are reaching out to the community to find people who could benefit from one of the many initiatives we support – Message in a Bottle. Message in a Bottle (or MIAB) is a simple idea that can save the life of anyone on medication or suffers allergies. It takes the form of a small green bottle in which the user keeps a full record of their medical prescriptions, allergies and any information that may be required in the event of an emergency. It includes a form to prompt users on what details to record, stickers so that Paramedics know to check the fridge (that’s where the bottle needs to be stored for easy access!) and full instructions on how it should be used. As a minimum it saves the Emergency Services valuable time identifying you and your emergency contacts, and at best, by telling whether you have special medication or allergies, it is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users, their friends and families. And this is where we need you! Please help us to identify anyone that can benefit from this little green bottle. It might be your parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles or the lady down the road. You might be part of a community centre, social group or a chess club – if anyone there takes medication they need a green bottle!

Corner Farm As part of the Jubilee Woods Project, which aims to plant 6 million trees in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee. We will be planting trees and shrubs. Our trees are to be amongst some of the first ones planted in this scheme. We are going to try to plant 420 trees and shrubs in various sites in Harworth, the areas we have chosen for planting are either in need of new hedges due to youths setting fire to some bushes in the last couple of years or are areas that we think will be augmented by the addition of shrubs improving the visual aesthetics for the residents. We are wanting to encourage youngsters to value and care for their local environment. All children who wish to plant the trees need to bring a spade and their parents (unless already agreed with Fiona), no youngsters will be allowed on to the farm unsupervised and supervision remains the parents responsibility. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council Page Cyclists: have you noticed the new bike stands on Scrooby Road? Hopefully it will encourage cyclist not to leave their bikes sprawled on the pavement outside the shops; this makes life difficult for other shoppers and can be dangerous for elderly people and those with poor vision. Safety is an issue. I am amazed at the number of children I see riding their bikes in the dark without lights. Why is this? I would like to encourage parents and young people to fit lights onto bicycles – any ideas on how we can do this, please contact the Council; perhaps we need a scheme to help promote better cycling safety. Football: you may have seen the football net recently placed on the field behind the Wimpey Estate. Council was aware that some children were kicking footballs against house walls, much to the annoyance of residents, so with some persistence the Tenants and Residence Association, Partnership Plus and this Council persuaded Bassetlaw District Council to install the football net, and at no cost. Hopefully we might yet produce another Bobby Charlton! Driving along Main Street, I couldn’t help but notice how smart the cenotaph is now looking. Council has recently had the old, large sycamore tree on the nearby grassed area trimmed back, as some branches were arching over residents gardens. How old is the tree? – well, my mother remembers it as a big tree when she went to school, and she is in her eighties, so work it out for yourself. Speaking of Mother Nature, Council has just developed some planted areas along Scrooby Road, and a further one in the Wimpey Estate. Why? – so that our community looks attractive and pleasant. We will plant them when the weather gets warmer, and residents can then enjoy some colour on the streets. What else have we done? – installed waste bins in the Wimpey Estate. Sadly, two were vandalised that same day, but nevertheless we will continue to try to improve the environment for our residents, in spite of a few mindless idiots. The new gritter was in operation following the recent fall of snow, and very effective it proved to be by getting rid of the snow and ice along the shop fronts. We have since been asked to grit other streets, but we are limited by the amount/cost of salt, plus we simply do not have the capacity to grit every road in our Town. We therefore have to concentrate on those areas used by the most people. If we get another significant fall of snow, look out for our men using the snow plough, too. The INFORMATION CENTRE. The Town Council's Information Centre located on Scrooby Road is open as follows:Monday 09.00 - 13.00 & 14.00 - 16.00 Tuesday - closed. Wednesday 09.00 - 12.30 Thursday - closed. Friday 09.00 - 13.00 - 14.00 - 15.30 Bassetlaw Distrct Council man this facility for the benefit of our residents. A1 Housing hold surgeries on Monday morning and at other times by appointment. The Town Council office can also be visited during these times.
