elcome to the April
edition of HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY.
Isn’t it lovely to see the splashes of colour created by Spring flowers and to once again feel the warmth of the sun from time to time. I had solar panels fitted during the winter months and have my fingers crossed that as the days get longer and brighter they will start to earn their keep! March has been a busy but very enjoyable month for me. I have worked some long hours but made up for it by enjoying time with my family and friends. At the time of writing I have managed 4 Sundays in a row where I haven’t worked at all—something of a record for me! The next edition will be distributed to you from 28th April. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Friday 13th April.
Best Wishes, Paula

A
message from the Vicarage
Easter is a time of great celebration. Christians have spent the season of Lent reflecting on how they can grow in their Christian life and better follow the Way of Jesus, and at the end of that period, they come together in church as one family to say Alleluia, He is risen. He is risen indeed, Alleluia! Although we don’t seem to over indulge at this time of year to quite the same extent as at Christmas, I’m sure the supermarket takings go up as families buy mouth-watering extra’s and come together for a bit of a do, and some may even settle down in front of the ‘box’ to watch a block-buster film over the Bank Holiday weekend. Looking back to my youth, I can remember my excitement as my mum brought home the Christmas and Easter editions of the Radio Times. With my sister I’d scramble through its pages searching in hope to find out if one of my favourite movies was going to be shown, (this was, of course, long before the advent of video and DVD). I was always thrilled if I found that one of the three or four channels was going to show ‘The Wizard of Oz’, or ‘The Slipper and the Rose’, or, best of all’ Chitty, Chitty Bang Bang’. You can see the kind kid I was … and still am really, because I do have all three of these films on DVD. When I need a bit of a boost, I settle down to wallow in nostalgia and sing along at the top of my voice annoying anyone who may be watching alongside me! Last month the song writer Robert B Sherman died. He with his brother Richard penned some classic music from children’s films like Mary Poppins and Jungle Book & of course, Chitty. I heard the news of his death whilst driving and as the theme song of that film came over the
radio waves, I couldn’t help but smile. Without thinking I was enthusiastically belting out ‘Oh, you CCBB, CCBB we love you. And in CCBB, CCBB what we’ll do. Near, far in our motor car, oh what a happy time we’ll spend’, etc! Creating music that can warm the hearts of millions is indeed a great legacy to leave behind. All this reminiscing does lead me back to the main theme of my article, Easter. The central message of the Christian faith is that the risen Jesus can bring to our lives the greatest of joys, pleasure, and delight. The spiritual truth that He overcame death, rising to new life should fill us with a sense that all is in his care and all is well. John Wesley, another man who with his brother is remembered for a musical legacy, had an experience of God which he described as feeling his heart ‘strangely warmed.’ That is what Easter should do for us. It should bring a smile to our face. It should cause us to burst into songs of praise. It should warm our hearts because the Easter message is one of hope; it tells us that because of our faith in Christ we can rise above whatever adversity we face. Charles Wesley wrote many hymns, but the line of one speaks of the pure joy of the Easter season. ‘Yea, amen, let all adore thee, high on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory, claim the kingdom for thine own. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Thou shalt reign and thou alone!’ Perhaps if the Sherman brothers were trying to describe the Easter feeling, thy might simply say it was ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’!
May the joy of the Easter Season warm your hearts From your friend and vicar, Reverend Jackie Johnson

ARWORTH AND BIRCOTES TENANTS’ AND RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION The meeting of the group, held on 6 March, began with a reminder that the next meeting (on 3 April), would be the Annual General Meeting, when the annual report and accounts are presented, the existing committee stand down and a new committee is elected. However, the existing committee are willing to stand for a further year, if nominated and elected. Members should give some thought as to whether they would like to nominate the existing committee, and they will require to let the Secretary have their nominations, along with a seconder, to reach the Secretary at least 14 days before the AGM. Anyone wishing to stand as a committee member should have a proposer and seconder. It was stressed that new committee members would be welcome, and would be given all help by the existing committee, who are all conscious that they are not getting any younger. No special skills are required, even for secretary, as it is possible to make brief notes in longhand, and reports are usually available from police, councillors, etc. There were discussions about Stagecoach’s decision to revise their bus services in Harworth and Bircotes. It was pointed out that this was purely a commercial decision by Stagecoach, who need to improve their time-keeeping. It was further pointed out that we should be careful not to rock the boat too much, as we had only just won the battle to reinstate the 21 service, and in the current climate, with the rising cost of diesel, we could well find ourselves back to square one. We do need to ensure that we are using the buses, and anyone wishing to complain is advised to contact Stagecoach direct on 0845 6050605 or 0870 6082608, as the Town Council are unable to influence a commercial decision made by Stagecoach. A raffle is being held in the weeks up to Easter weekend, for two large Thornton’s Easter Eggs, tickets at £1 per trip, and these will be on sale at The Pantry coffee shop at the Town Hall, every Thursday morning (10 till 12 noon). Members were told about the Town Council plans for a Grand Jubilee Gala, with floats, a Jubilee Queen and attendants, with lots of entertainment for all age groups, with a tea party for the smaller children at the Town Hall, a bonny baby competition, bouncy castle, face painting, whilst the entertainment for the older ones will be on the recreation ground on Scrooby Road, with paintball, blow up football, power risers, magic shows, and much more. The judging for the Jubilee Queen and attendants will take place at an “Open Mic” night at the Town Hall on Saturday 5 May. It is hoped to make this an annual event. There are still places on the outings to Knowsley Safari Park in August, and Blackpool in October, but £5 deposit is required to reserve a seat. Enquiries to Marilyn Knight (744182). The police were unable to be present, but a report will be included with the minutes of the meeting. Town and District Councillor, Dave Challinor was present to give us an update on District and Town Council news. The next meeting of the group will be the Annual General Meeting and will take place on Tuesday 3 April 2012, starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire Road At The Town Hall Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come Pot of Tea 50p along, help us to make Harworth/Bircotes an even Mug of Tea 50p better place to live, and maybe make new friends and Mug of Coffee 60p learn some new facts in the process. Refreshments are Cup of Coffee 60p available and a raffle will usually take place. We would Toasted Teacake 50p particularly welcome anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. – so please come Buttered Scone 60p and join us. Jam 5p

All Saints School Admissions Policy After several recent conversations with parents I think it is important to clarify the Admissions Policy for All Saints Harworth Church Of England Primary School. When the school has places available the Admissions Policy IS NOT applied. Any child within the community can have a place as long as the year group they are joining is not full. However, if there are more applicants for a particular year group than we have places for, the Governors have no choice but to refer to the criteria for admission on the Admissions Policy. We can only take 30 children in any given year group, but we may have many more apply. In that situation there has to be some way of making a decision about who can have a place. As Chairperson of the Governors Admissions Panel I can say that sifting through the applications, applying the criteria and taking decisions on who can be admitted and who will be disappointed is not a pleasant task. The Criteria are as follows: 1. The child is ‘looked after’ or in care 2. The child has siblings already attending the school 3. Parents/Carers are practicing members of the Church of England. 4. Parents/Carers are practicing members of any other Christian denomination 5. Parents/Carers are desiring of a Christian Education for their child 6. The proximity to the school as the crow flies It is important that parents are aware of what is generally understood by the phrase ‘a practicing member of the C of E’. It describes someone who comes to church at least once a month, someone who is well known not just to the parish priest, but to other church members, and someone who is involved in the worship and life of the church. It refers to someone who could be considered to be at the heart of the worshipping community. Being baptised at All Saints Church does not give your child an automatic place at All Saints School. Indeed, someone who isn’t baptised but attends church regularly would be more likely to gain a place under the criteria as opposed to someone who was baptised but came infrequently. The congregation at All Saints Church welcome people of all ages, and we make children and their families particularly welcome at our weekly communion service by offering activities in the children’s area in church. We also hold a Family Service once a month, and a monthly Rainbow Tots Play and Praise Service at the church hall for babies and toddlers. We also have a short communion service on a Thursday morning. That means there are a variety of opportunities for parents/carers and children to become involved in the worshipping life of our church. Our congregation are fully aware that many parents and carers join our worshipping community for a time and then, when their child has started at school, we rarely see them. I also know of many parents who have booked a baptism and told me the only reason they are doing so is to ‘get into the school.’ We are pleased that so many come, whatever their reason and no matter how long they stay. However, it is clear that those who truly want their children to learn more about the Christian faith, those who are seeking a Christian education, will do so primarily by coming to church regularly, by being involved in the life and work of the church - by being an active participant. After all, you couldn’t call yourself a footballer if you didn’t play football regularly, and you can’t really say you’re a church worshipper if you rarely come to church. I hope that this has clarified the situation for parents/carers. Yours in Christ, The Reverend Jackie Johnson 12 | HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

arworth Colliery Football Club It has been all change at the club since the last article the Football club had in Harworth & Bircotes Today.
The committee called time on the first team management back in late January, the club thanked Lee Scott and Craig Moreton for their time and efforts, but we needed a change and so are delighted to welcome back Brendan Wilson and Lee Danysz who were the managers last season both had their reasons for standing down at the time but are the right people to take the club forward. Harworth Colliery F.C. are also delighted to announce Weldricks Pharmacy as the Club sponsor. Weldricks will be helping to promote and raise the clubs profile, all involved will be making every effort to ensure this is a success which we know it will be, we have already seen them kindly donate a Kit for the Serlby Park Girls team, this has helped the team re-form and we hope they can go onto have every success this season and the ones that follow, the club wish them well. Please see below a brief update on all the four senior teams, more in-depth Club news and features can be found On the website (details bottom of page) As pointed out earlier the club are working hard to raise their profile and we urge that the Village get behind All the teams and offer their support as the lads deserve it, In times of financial hardship and spiralling costs to watch League Football we offer everyone the chance to follow and enjoy watching their local club on their very doorstep, the majority of lads that play up on the Rec are born and bred in the village and we know you wont be disappointed. HCFC 1st team – With the change in management it would be fair to say the team is in transition, with both Brendan and Lee using the remainder of the season to look at new and old players in preparation for next, the club are comfortable in mid-table and we hope can have a good end to the year. Reserves – After going the first 9 games of the season unbeaten the team have lost 3 of the last 4. This leaves the lads with an uphill battle to challenge for the title but the lads will give it there all. 3rds – The team currently lie 3rd in the league and doing well in a couple of the cups so a trip to the Trinity is certainly within their reach. Under 19’s - The under 19’s have again punched way above their weight and have remained in Division Two of the North Midlands League, this is a great achievement considering the clubs they are up against. CLUB FUNDRAISER The Club is proud to present an Evening with Dave Basset on April 19th, this will be held in the Welfare Hall and should be a great Night for the Village and the Club, this again raises the profile and also some much needed funds so we hope you can make it, Tickets are priced at £20 and this includes entry, Pie and Peas and a pint and free prize Raffle, there will also be special guests in Glynn Hodges and Derek French (Sheff Utd Club Physio & Compere for the evening) For tickets please contact Jonathan Wilson on 07979958255, or visit the club website see below. For all Club News visit the website www.pitchero.com/clubs/harworthcollieryinstitute We are also on Facebook just search, Harworth Colliery FC or Harworth Pavilion Anybody wanting to get in touch if interested in joining the club then please e-mail: harworthcolliery@live.co.uk, we are always looking for people to get involved so Don’t hesitate to do so, thanks for you’re time and hope to see you up on the Rec soon. 14 | HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

Back by popular demand Daniel Smith Blues Band. Think Jools Holland – only better – only in your neighbourhood – and tickets only a fraction of the price…. You wont have a better boogie woogie evening anywhere……. Daniel Smith is described as the world's greatest Dutch-Indonesian -Anglo-Scottish blues and boogie woogie piano player - and it's probably true! He learnt boogie woogie from his Dutch-Indonesian uncle on regular visits to Holland, his mother's family having emigrated there post-War from Jakarta, Indonesia, where his maternal grandfather had been a jazz piano player as well as an official in the Dutch colonial civil service. Daniel Smith is one of the most exciting talents to emerge on the British blues scene in recent years. In 1994, he first shot to prominence with Sonny Black, gaining rave reviews from press, audiences and fellow musicians alike. 1999 saw him launch his own solo career and form The Daniel Smith Blues Band. He has a rare technical and musical ability to produce sustained and inspired keyboards work across the whole spectrum of the blues genre. Whether performing standards or his excellent original material, Daniel Smith is commonly recognised as an outstanding keyboards talent and a boogie woogie pianist without parallel. Add to this his dry, laid-back, on-stage humour and an absolute killer band - (featuring some of Britain's finest, most experienced musicians) - and you have a class act invoking a genuine sense of the old-time, good-time barrelhouse and speakeasy. He has recorded eight albums http://www.daniel.smith.hampshire.org.uk/ You will be talking about this evening for months to come – don’t miss it.

Patient Participation Groups Would you like to make a difference and have an opinion on healthcare ? You may not be aware that recent changes to the General Medical Services Contract from April 2011 require GP practices to promote the proactive engagement of their patients through a Patient /Reference /Participation Group and to undertake local surveys. At its simplest Patient Participation refers to patients taking an active interest in their health care and at present most Patient Participation Groups (PPG) operate within GP surgeries and health centres and make an important contribution to the well being of their communities. The aim of each PPG is to gather a group of local members from a broad a spectrum as possible to get a truly representative sample of opinion and points of view. They all need young people, workers, retirees, people with long term conditions and people from non-British ethnic groups Their activities include health promotion, information provision, service delivery, fundraising and strategic input into the practice. Many Doctors practices have, or are about to form a PPG and would welcome input and interest and in some cases further members. If you personally would like to make a difference and have an opinion on healthcare and the services provided through your own GP then why not become an active member of their PPG. You could either attend their regular meetings or alternatively be someone who would be happy for the PPG to contact you occasionally for your opinion on current topics. For further information about joining and participating within your own group visit your local practice and pick up a leaflet. If you then feel you need further information speak to their PPG Chairman – your call would be most welcome.

Crimebeat A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime.
With East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Simon Pealing What price will you pay for a bargain buy? Have you ever been offered cheap goods in a And the cheaper the goods are, the more likely pub, at a car boot sale, or on the street corner? they are to be stolen If you are offered goods at a price that seems too good to be true, handle them with care because they are probably stolen. And knowingly buying stolen goods makes you just as guilty as the thief. They may seem like a bargain at the time, but you could end up paying a much higher price. To the thief, it’s just a few pounds in his pocket, but to the victim, it could be priceless memories that are gone forever – along with their peace of mind. For the victim, a burglary is a traumatic experience, especially when irreplaceable mementoes are stolen. The thieves do not care what heartache they cause to their victims And the only guarantee you will get if you do buy stolen goods is that you are committing a criminal offence. You could easily end up with a criminal record and even a prison sentence. In fact, buying stolen goods could result in a prison sentence of up to 14 years, and that’s quite a price to pay for your “bargain buy”. So, if you are offered goods at a price that seems just too good to be true, think carefully before saying yes, because saying yes could cost you your liberty.
And stop and think how you would feel if your house or your car was broken into and your property was stolen. Having your property stolen is bad enough, but knowing it has been sold for a few pounds somehow makes the theft even worse Buying, or receiving, stolen property makes you just as bad as the person who stole it, because if there were no buyers, no receivers, there would be far fewer thieves. Instead of buying stolen property why not call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 and “Rat on a Rat”. Calls are NOT traced, you WILL NOT be asked for your name, address or telephone number and you COULD claim a cash reward if your information leads to an arrest and charge. You WILL NOT have to go to court and no-one will know who gave the information. In fact, if you know anyone in your area who is committing any kind of crime you should contact Crimestoppers because we all have a part to play in crime reduction and crime prevention. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council Page IMPROVEMENTS AT THE ALLOTMENTS. A new fence has been installed on the allotments to stop local residents dumping household waste in this area. The allotment holders are really pleased to have seen this latest project completed and have thanked the Town Council. Last year a water supply was installed to stop allotment holders having to lift a manhole cover and drag buckets from an underground stream which was unacceptable under current health and safety legislation. BULB PLANTING. Residents will, I am sure, have noticed the continued attempts to improve the look of the Town. Mr Paul Riley a senior manager at DHL has planted a large quantity of bulbs on Tickhill Road and they look great. The Town Council would like to thank him for his effort to improve Harworth and Bircotes. Bulbs have also been planted in the Common Lane area on the large grassed area and near the Town Hall, Information Centre and Wrights Hill this is a project which started three years ago following comments that "Tickhill, Bawtry and Blyth all have lovely bulbs and gardened areas why don't we". The Town Councillors listened to these comments and have acted. WAR MEMORIAL. There have also been many favourable comments about the refurbished War Memorial in Harworth and I wish to record Council's thanks to Cllr. Brian Letherland who has overseen this project from start to finish. JUBILEE EVENTS & ACTIVITIES. Details of the Jubilee Events are being written by Cllr. S Dean and her team of volunteers. Please see elsewhere in this magazine for more details. GRASS CUTTING. I am pleased to be able to confirm that H&BTC is to continue to cut grass verges in and around H&B's having taken on this responsibility from Notts CC last year. The difference in the service provided was very noticeable and I have to record my thanks to Walt Pearson who can be seen working in and around H&B's. WELL DONE WALT. Town Council activity has increased massively in the last three years and I hope that the difference has been noticed. If you have an idea or suggestion to make please drop a note to the Information Centre or Town Hall. There are many residents who have not yet visited the Town Hall and seen the facilities available. WHY NOT COME AND SEE FOR YOURSELF WHAT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED?
