Welcome to the

Today

August 2019 edition

“Some of the best memories are made in flip flops” Kellie Elmore - Author Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. August can be a slow time for lots of shops and businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday or enjoying a different routine which takes them to other shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the year too)! Following the success of our previous giveaways, this month we have 10 pairs of tickets for The Festival of Food and Drink taking place at Clumber Park in September. This is a great day out, look out for the Giveaway details in the magazine for your chance to enter. With 10 pairs available it really is worth a go! The September issue will be delivered to you very late August or for many in the first few days of September. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Monday 19th August. As always, I will take some time away from desk and my computer screen during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Enjoy August and I will be back in a months’ time with your September magazine.

We play every Monday at the pavilion in Bircotes 1-2 pm followed by a cup of tea and a chat afterwards. The ladies have also been successful in the North Hykeham tournament beating teams from Lincoln, Grantham and North Hykeham. We are playing in another tournament in August so hope to be just as successful then. A few of the ladies have been playing alongside some younger ladies in the Doncaster Back to Netball Leisure League as a team called Harworth Misfits. August is traditionally the quiet month but there is still things to do and see, not least some open air events. Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery NB now open Thursday to Sunday Exhibition: until 8 September DONCASTER ART CLUB: paintings and drawings in a variety of media by this thriving local art club. Until 15 September ‘HANDS UP!’ From brushing our teeth first thing in the morning to turning off the bedside lamp last thing at night, the human hand is indispensable, not just for everything we do but for those artifacts with which we do them with. ‘Hands Up’ brings together a display of art and artefact from the collection of Heritage Doncaster, celebrating the human hand. www.doncaster.gov.uk/museums Art at the Deli: This month you will find paintings by JEAN RUSH www.artatthedeli.com Harley Gallery Welbeck until 22 September IN MY SHOES a show of self portraiture including the not so young YBAs Tracy Emin and Grayson Perry www.harleygallery.co.uk National Trust, Hardwick Hall Wednesday – Sunday, 11am-5pm until 3 November. After receiving high levels of interest and popularity, ‘WE ARE BESS’ photographic exhibition has been extended. The exhibition features 20 modern women, from household names to the local community, including Sue Perkins and The Right Reverend Libby Lane. These women responded to the retold story of Bess of Hardwick, the woman who built Hardwick Hall, and reflect on the similarities between the challenges Bess faced and their own experiences. www.nationaltrust.org.uk

Kip Combes (1924-2013) was a prominent figure on the local art scene and a president of the Worksop Society of Artists, while his son Richard is a highly respected New York-based artist who has exhibited internationally and has work in major private collections worldwide. During the early stages of World War II, Kip Combes was evacuated to Retford with his family and, apart from a period of living in Manchester, he remained in the town for the rest of his life. Richard was brought up in Retford and worked as an architect in the UK before moving to New York City. There he earned Master’s degree in painting at the New York Academy of Art and his remarkable skills and mastery of techniques have earned him multiple awards and a full membership of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Although many of Richard’s works are realistic representations of people and objects, they are not just

skilful depictions of subjects. His art transports viewers into the middle of an intriguing, unfinished story and makes them wonder about how it continues. Hello from Mayflower, What a difference a month or two makes, instead of keeping our dogs warm, we are now filling paddling pools to keep them cool. The kennel assistants also hose the kennel runs to keep the dogs nice and cool and chilled, so as you can imagine on top of all the other jobs it is hard work but very necessary. Last time I wrote about Lottie who had the ear operation and is totally deaf, she is now ready for re-homing she is a lovely small short haired Collie type, who is learning hand signals, but is still a little nervous and needs to gain more confidence. If you feel that you are able to help this lovely girl please give us a call. We also have older puppies that are very pretty, but please be aware that are criteria for re-homing puppies is quite strict. However please come along and chat to our kennel staff they will be happy to help you. We have some beautiful kittens here too, again come and speak to us about our adoption procedure for kittens. Some of us did a Doncaster Street collection in July. We had a really great day and thoroughly enjoyed the street artist that was singing on the same street. We happily joined in and also met some lovely people and listened to their stories. Doncaster people are always so generous so a big thank you to everyone that supported us. We had a fantastic Dog Show and raised lots of money at the Pavilion field in Tickhill. It was a beautiful day, thank you to everyone that came to show off their lovely dogs it was such a difficult decision for the judges as every dog has a special something. Thank you to people that baked cakes for the cake stall and kitchen, also to all volunteer that helped on the day, we had such a brilliant turn out. One last thanks to Shaun and Vin who did the BBQ it made a welcome lunch time treat. Please call us if you require any information about our Sanctuary. We have an abundance of beautiful dogs and cats so please if you are looking for a special pet please call for a chat and a look around. Our telephone number is 01302 711330. Have a lovely summer. Best Wishes

Bagpuss Female 18 mth Apr 2019 No No Yes Older

Bagpuss came into our care with her brother due to domestic issues in their previous home. Unfortunately, once here, she decided to bully her sibling and had to be separated. Maybe she prefers to be an only kitty – that way she gets ALL the attention. Bagpuss has lived with young children in her previous home but we have found her to be a little feisty and is therefore not recommended to be rehomed with youngsters. Bagpuss does not like dogs. In her previous home, Bagpuss was mainly a housecat but was allowed outside under strict supervision. She would possibly enjoy a secure garden to explore once she’s thoroughly settled into her new home. If you’re looking for a fussy kitty with a mind of her own and bags of character, then look no further. Here she is !!!!!!

Murphy Male 3 Years Mar 2019 Possibly No Yes

Murphy has been very reluctantly signed over into Mayflowers care because he isn’t getting along with the other 2 cats in the household. They used to live together quite peacefully but recently Murphy has been attacking his ‘sisters’ to the point that one of them had to be taken to the emergency vets. Medical issues have been ruled out and all calming measures have been tried. Unfortunately it appears to be a personality clash so his owners made the heartbreaking decision to rehome him. For this reason Murphy must be an only cat. He has met a dog whilst here and wasn’t unduly worried by it. Murphy has previously been allowed access to the outside so he would like a garden to explore in his new home. He is a very loving chap and purrs like a tractor when he gets going. He is also very vocal especially around feeding time ! Have you room in your heart for this handsome boy? We hope so.

COMMUNITY

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association

On 2 July 2019 the group met for their monthly meeting at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. As always the meeting was well attended, but new members are always welcome. The Secretary of the Group has recently received an award as a Tenant Champion. Unfortunately, she could not bring it away with her as the word “tenant” had been wrongly spelled on it, and this caused some amusement to members. It was unanimously agreed that the recent trip to Liverpool had been a resounding success, and members were asked if they would like to go to Liverpool for this year’s Christmas Market trip. More information about dates etc will be brought to a future meeting. A Town Councillor talked about comments on Facebook regarding the state of the cemetery. Recent prolonged rain spells had meant that the grass grew very quickly and it is not possible, or indeed wise, to cut wet grass. This will only make it look worse. Compared with other cemeteries in the area ours is very well maintained, considering that we now have two cemeteries to maintain, but now have little or no income from the old cemetery. Also, the number of items now being

14

placed on graves makes it very difficult to keep the grass around the graves tidy and well cut. It was observed that most people go to the cemetery with a pair of scissors and do a little tidying up of their loved ones’ graves. There were comments from members saying that visiting relatives to our cemetery felt that we should be proud of our cemetery, as not all cemeteries are as well looked after. The Town Councillor reported on a litter pick when it was joined by residents of Avondale. Afterwards all who took part were invited back to Avondale and enjoyed a very tasty barbecue courtesy of the residents and staff. Everyone enjoyed the experience and got to talk to residents, and learn of their determination to build a new life for themselves. They were all very polite and helpful, and fun to be with. It was very interesting to see the raised beds where they are growing vegetables, and salad plants, and are also learning to cook these vegetables as part of their rehabilitation. It was such a pity that some locals complained about the “loud” music. It wasn’t particularly loud, and wasn’t at night, but during the daytime. All those living close by had been invited to come and join in but chose not to. Such a pity as they would have learned something about the residents and would have had a better understanding of them. Everyone deserves a chance.

and it is intended to raise this at the PSM meeting. It is hoped that the message can be taken to the schools so that schoolchildren can become involved in using the many rubbish bins situated around our town. The next meeting of the Tenants and Residents group will take place on Tuesday 6 August, starting at 10.30 am at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. New members are always welcome. Come along and try it. You could make new friends and learn something to your benefit.

DEAR FRIENDS,

Scarbrough Arms Tickhill

l fe beer s ti va

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye this month to our minister Rev Dr Frank Okai Sam after 11 years amongst us. He leaves us

to begin a new life and ministry on the south coast of England with two churches that are part of the South Downs Methodist Circuit. We believe that they are very lucky to have Frank and will be greatly blessed by his presence amongst them. We shall miss him very much. Travel well Frank and may God continue to bless you and your family richly in the years ahead. Sadly, it was time for Frank to leave us. But why now? Why not last year? Stay with us a little longer Frank – why not next? In response to this question, Frank could not say, only that it was time. God had called and Frank (as always) had answered yes. In the bible there is a beautiful poem which you might have heard, it begins; There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: A time to be born and a time to die, A time to plant and a time to uproot, A time to kill and a time to heal, A time to tear down and a time to build, A time to weep and a time to laugh, A time to mourn and a time to dance …..

The Book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3, verses 1-8

You may know it better, paraphrased in The Seekers 1966 hit ‘Turn, turn, turn.’ Both these versions of the poem speak quite beautifully into situations of unexplainable loss. Drawing our attention away from our little selves, our little needs and our little lives into the context of eternity. For the time that we are speaking of here, is of course, not our time but God’s time. For us, there is never a time to lose someone we love, but we cannot say what God’s purposes might be. All we can know is that on the last day, which will surely come as God has promised, time will be no more and past, present and future will meet in the holy now of heaven and earth completed and one, and we will be re-united, wholly and perfectly with those we have loved and lost. So, God bless you Frank, God planted you for a while in our soil, we have laughed and cried together, mourned and danced, but God has uprooted you to re-plant you in another part of his kingdom. If we do not meet again on earth we will surely meet

THE PARISH OF HARWORTH AND BIRCOTES, STYRRUP AND HESLEY T (All Saints’ Church, Harworth) Well, as I pass my eighteenth year in harness (or should that be ‘in collar’?!)

redemption is not easy.

Wrong, because the day that All Saints' Church spent with the good people of Avondale House on Whitehouse Road last month truly astonished and delighted us all. It would have been easy and popular to be persuaded by all those comments about them, but we decided to pay no attention to these voices. Instead, we decided to roll up our sleeves, make friends, and work with them. In short, we chose to do the Jesus thing. Besides, isn’t there enough negativity in the world already?

It’s part of our commitment to every nook and cranny of our parish. With love from Nicky the Vicar

On returning to Avondale for a delicious BBQ lunch (you should have tasted the jerk chicken!) we were treated to a series of presentations and musical performances. And where was Simon Cowell when you need him, because WOW! that one resident really can rap. Folks, here was talent, here was hope, here was a bunch of people working hard to turn their life around. We are privileged to have them amongst us, and I hope they found our presence an encouragement. But then, you should expect me to say this, because you know as well as I do that Jesus Christ is the one from whom I take my lead. Call us ‘churchgoers’ if you like, but we’re Christians – followers of the living God, who offers life in all its fullness to you, too. It’s Jesus, my Lord, who demonstrated that it is vulnerability and love which is next to Godliness, not cleanliness. And for anyone who wants to label us as naïve do-gooders,

well – yes – we’ll take that thanks.

For now, we’re still feeling the warmth of the love and gratitude which was so very much in evidence that day. We learnt how litter wasn’t the only thing being picked up (and, yes, sadly there was an awful lot of it…). The other thing being picked up was the lives of the residents; in the church, we call this redemption. But, as Avondale staff have told me,

20

We gather for worship at 10am on Thursdays and Sundays. For up to date event information and advice on how to make a baptism or wedding booking, find us on Facebook at ‘All Saints Church, Harworth and Bircotes’ or search for us at Church of England web portal, www.achurchnearyou.com. Nicky the Vicar 07734 233742 To enquire about hiring our Church Hall on Main Street, please ‘phone the Caretaker, Steve Ellis, on 01302 745439.

Lung cancer Know your symptoms • A cough that doesn't go away after three weeks • A long-standing cough that gets worse • Persistent chest infections • Coughing up blood • An ache or pain when breathing or coughing • Persistent breathlessness • Persistent tiredness or lack of energy • Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

As a result, a large group from All Saints’, plus many representatives of local agencies and groups, including neighbourhood Police, had an AMAZING time. Yes, we were picking up litter in and around Snipe Park, but what was really happening is that we were shoulder to shoulder with a host of people with the most amazing stories.

So the next time you meet a resident of Avondale House, ask them how they’re doing. As a church, we’ll be supporting staff and residents well into the future.

You should see your GP if you have any of these symptoms

Make a Property Trust Will How do they work?

For Property Trust Wills to be effective you must own your property jointly with your partner. Most partners own their home as joint tenants. This means when one dies the home will automatically pass to the survivor.

All for

£300 inc VAT*

We will alter the ownership from joint tenants to tenants in common. This means you own a distinct share which you can then leave into the Property Trust which grants the surviving spouse/partner a life interest in the home for their lifetime. Should the surviving spouse/partner need to go into a care home then only their share of the home is taken into account not the whole. Should your spouse/partner remarry or make a new Will after your death then your share of the home is protected for your beneficiaries. With arranged Care Home costs currently in the region of £600 per week, the cost of £300.00 is a small price to pay for the severance of joint tenancy and Wills. Jones & Co is probably the best known firm of local Solicitors, having offered personal and business legal advice to people in the area for more than 200 years. COMMUNITY

THE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP

of the tickhill and colliery surgery T Hello, my name is Abigail and I am the female club vice-captain of Bircotes swimming club. As a proud member of the club, I would like to share with you a few of our achievements from this past month. As a club, we would like to start off by saying a huge thank you to Tickhill Lions for the kind donation of £300 to buy software, we are extremely grateful for your generosity. We also had our annual general meeting where it was voted the committee will remain the same for the next year. Another event that happened was the Bassetlaw championships. 50 of our swimmers took part and achieved lots of PBs and many medals were taken home. Two swimmers, Lexi and Blake also obtained county times and we are all very proud of them for this achievement.

AIMING TO HELP YOU BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR OWN HEALTH AND HEALTHCARE When the practice is closed on Wednesday afternoon for staff training to take place, medical help is still available. Patients should ring the usual surgery telephone number. You will automatically be connected to the “out of hours service”. Some of the training sessions are held in the surgery, however, most take place off site. FUTURE WEDNESDAY TRAINING DATES ARE: 4th September 2019 25th September 2019 9th October 2019 6th November 2019 13th November 2019 29th January 2020 26th February 2020 4th March 2020 25th March 2020 The practice opens Monday to Friday from 8am till 6pm. On the above dates it will close at 12:15pm and reopen at 8:am the next day. The practice does not choose dates of the closures and they are a mandatory requirement in the National Health Service. The sessions include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Health and Safety training, to ensure the practice is able to offer the best possible service to patients and comply with NHS guidance.

On a Thursday night in June, we had an open water swim at Hatfield Water Park. It was a lovely day which worked in our favour as some of the swimmers didn’t need to wear wetsuits. Some parents even joined in. Everyone had an enjoyable time and said they would love to do it again. Also, congratulations to Malachy and Cillian from a neighbouring club on reaching nationals, everyone is very proud of you both.

A receptionist at Bircotes Leisure Centre has raised £1,400 for charity at an annual fundraiser. Julie Nugent, aged 59 from Harworth, runs the Robert Burns Memorial Fundraiser every year in memory of her nephew, Robert, who passed away from cardiac complications aged just 19. Julie and her sister Doreen Burns, Robert’s mother, have organised and hosted the fundraisers for 13 years. Funds raised from these events are donated to CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young). CRY aims to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and to support families. The event, which was held on 29th May at Harworth Sports Pavilion, included mini football tournaments and a raffle. Local businesses from across the area donated prizes for the raffle – some began donating as early as February in the run up to the event.

26

Julie’s hard work and the donations from businesses raised £1,160 at the fundraiser. Another event in Robert’s memory was held at Bircotes Leisure Centre. Members, visitors and staff were invited to a coffee morning and a tombola, which also raised £240 for CRY. Julie says that she will continue to hold Robert Burns Memorial Fundraisers to raise awareness of cardiac conditions. She said: “It’s nice to meet people that still remember Robert from school, it’s nice to get everyone together to celebrate him. It’s really important to us – myself and Robert’s family – to keep his memory alive and to raise awareness of cardiac conditions. Hopefully we can prevent this from happening to another young person.” Owen Nick, Assistant Operations Manager at Bircotes Leisure Centre, is proud of Julie’s achievements. He said: “We are immensely proud of the work that Julie does to continuously support this cause, which is close to her heart. Each year she raises more and more money to support CRY and always gets our members involved. She raised an amazing amount in a short time with a tombola and cake stall. Everything was sold out early in the afternoon! Well done Julie!”

The easiest way to search is to put in any postcode for Harworth/ Bircotes in the main page where it should then come up with a page listed Harworth with a crime map of Harworth & Bircotes, and the number of incidents reported in a month (usually 2 months behind). You can then click on the interactive crime map which you are able to zoom down to street level where incidents that have been reported are plotted on the map. You can then click on the circle of any incident where it will then show you the type of incident, current status of the crime/incident if under investigation or finalised. POLICE WARN PUBLIC OVER RECENT ONLINE SCAMS :WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Action Fraud have received an increase in reports and intelligence where elderly victims are being targeted by individuals purporting to be police officers or traffic wardens. The victims are being approached whilst parked in a car park and are told by the suspect that they have parked illegally or broken a speed limit and a photo has been taken of their car for ‘evidence’. Victims are advised that they will face a substantial penalty fine unless they pay a smaller upfront fee immediately. Victims, who opt for paying the smaller penalty, will be directed to a parking meter and asked to enter their card and PIN. These parking meters have been tampered with by the suspect in order to retain the card. Once the victim inserts their card and are asked for their PIN, the victims are shoulder surfed for their PIN by the suspect. Once victims input their PIN, the card is retained by the machine and victims are told by the suspect to seek help from the company who operates the parking meter or their bank. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO • If you are suspicious about the authenticity of the fine, do not pay it until you have verified it with your local council. • Always shield your PIN from view when using an ATM machine, and never share your PIN with anyone.

• If your bank card is retained by an ATM machine, contact your bank immediately to inform them. If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible on 0300 123 2040 or via Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk NEWS FROM RECENT ARRESTS/ PROSECUTIONS/COURT RESULTS OVER PAST 3 MONTHS. MALES CHARGED WITH THEFT Two Males, An adult and a Juvenile from Bircotes area have been charged with Theft of Scrap from Wintech Modular on 10th February 2019 where various items of scrap including lights, cable and sinks were found in the rear of a transit van. The adult male pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay £200 compensation, £50 victim surcharge, £85 costs and a fine of £100. The Juvenile pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 6 months conditional discharge. FIREFIGHTERS CALLED AFTER SHOCKED NEIGHBOURS FIND BURNING CAR ON RESIDENTIAL STREET Residents from Harworth & Bircotes expressed their shock after finding a burning car in the middle of a residential street. Fire crews and Police were called to Amanda Road in Harworth after a car was set alight at 12.15am on Thursday 11th July. The vehicle believed to be a Mini Cooper, was ablaze for around 45 minutes before firefighters were able to put it out. Nottinghamshire Police are investigating the incident where Crime Scene Investigators were involved in examining the burnt out vehicle which is believed to have been stolen from a Burglary in South Yorkshire area. Nottinghamshire Police are appealing to anyone who has any information about this incident should call 101 quoting incident number 9 of July 11th. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - AUGUST 2019 KEEPING YOU AWARE OF DEVELOPMENTS IN OUR TOWN IS OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE; I WILL CONTINUE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED VIA THIS MAGAZINE, AND YOU CAN ACCESS THE COUNCIL WEBSITE AND THE COUNCIL FACEBOOK PAGE. ANY QUERIES: CONTACT ME OR OTHER COUNCILLORS, WE WILL, AS ALWAYS, TRY TO HELP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY Ready for the School Holidays? Hopefully we will get some warm, sunny weather for everyone to enjoy -certainly the Town Council is hoping so, and has arranged a number of events in August to be held on the Civic Square next to the Town Hall. August Events 9th & 10th. Outdoor Roller-Rink, from 10.30am to 3.30pm 12th to 16th. Harworth and Bircotes By the Beach, from 10am to 3.30pm. This is a large sand pit, open daily, and usually a big hit with smaller children – so dig out those buckets and spades. 23rd. Outdoor Family Disco 1pm to 3pm – a chance to show those youngsters that you can still strut your stuff ! Or, You Can Take a Walk on the Wild Side. How about a guided walk along parts of the Chesterfield Canal this summer? If you are interested in nature, waterways, canal locks and boats – not to mention the occasional pub – this is for you.

30

The walks range from gentle up to strenuous, with distances from 1 to 10 miles, and cover parts of Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire – I noticed Misterton and Mattersey in the itinerary, and pet dogs are welcome on some walks. Contact www.chesterfieldcanal-trust.org.uk and ask for their excellent brochure, and for details of their Festival in September. Talking About Nature, we have a problem of disappearing plants in the Town Centre; it seems any flowers or small shrubs vanish in the night, although the culprits do, however, leave clear evidence of their guilt – rabbit droppings. These little blighters do sometimes eat flowers left in the cemeteries, but it seems they have now found a second source for supplementing their diet! Work on levelling part of the 2nd Bund next to the recycling centre at the Town Hall is, you will notice, now in progress. It will become a grassed area with a path cutting through it; that path will connect with a pathway on Simpson Park in the future no doubt the rabbits will love it.

includes Harworth and Bircotes - the final journey here will be on Friday 2nd August. A telephone conversation with their transport manager confirmed that funding cuts to their service had led to this decision. The Town Council has supported the Community Bus Service since May 2016, we greatly regret the loss of this service and are looking for alternative options. Recycling and Contamination. Contamination is a major issue when it comes to recycling the contents of the blue bin, and it can result in a whole lorry load of recycling being refused and instead being sent for incineration. Bassetlaw District Council operates a ‘three strikes rule` - on the first two occasions offenders will receive a warning and be asked to remove the contaminating material; on the third occasion the household will lose their blue bin. Did you see the pile of rubbish displayed in our Town Centre in July? Fly Tipping costs the District Council (you) £115,000 per year. To drive home the message about this appalling practice by some, Environmental Health have launched a campaign about how residents can help tackle the problem. It is also intended to visit several wards and display a collection of non-toxic items that have been illegally dumped – just to drive the message home.

The Community Bus – Cancellation of Registered Local Bus Service In July the Town Council received a letter from the company responsible for the Community Bus Service, advising that they have been running at a significant loss for some time; following a review of their n Notts County Council activities they were ceasing n Bassetlaw District Council to operate in n A1 Housing Bassetlaw. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - AUGUST 2019 Green Bins now have 8,917 customers using 9,324 bins – an increase of 1544 bins this season – this is definitely an ‘onwards and upwards` success scheme! Volunteers Needed to Tickle the Ivories. Doncaster Royal, Bassetlaw, and Montagu Hospitals will each have an electronic baby grand piano in their main reception, and are looking for Grade 7 volunteers with a few hours to spare to play them; it’s also an opportunity for anyone aged 17-plus wishing to achieve Grade 7 and looking to perform in public. The plan is that music played at intervals will provide patients with a calming, cultured atmosphere and reduce anxiety - no Black Sabbath or Little Richard hits, then! If interested, look at www.dbth. nhs.uk or ring 01302 444403 PLANNING APPLICATIONS Planning Application 19/00806/ FUL: extension to current unit by erecting canopy and retrospective cladding works, Unit C7a, Glassworks Way, Harworth A Good Samaritan. Mr George Muckle recently had an accident and found himself making contact with the pavement on Bawtry Road, resulting in a trip to hospital for treatment. Fortunately, a caring local lady came to his assistance and stayed with him until the ambulance arrived. George has asked that his thanks to this good Samaritan be expressed in this magazine, so ‘thank you, lovely kind lady`.

TO MAKE YOU SMILE: Life before Mobile Phones When I trained as a midwife, it was necessary to move into rooms in the Nurses Home for 3 months whilst gaining the necessary community experience. This meant you were ‘on call` 24 hours a day for home deliveries, and therefore reliant on the only telephone on your corridor.

JUNE EVANS - CHAIRPERSON STEPH ROBINSON – VICE CHAIR SHEENA DEAN SANDRA JAMES STEVE BARNS JANET FLYNN ROZ JONES

A colleague – let’s call her Mary – was called out one evening to a home delivery in a block of flats. It was a long but successful labour, and at 8am the next morning a weary Mary gathered up her midwifery case, along with a black plastic bag containing the placenta – the flats did not have open fires, so the afterbirth had to be disposed of at the hospital – and caught the bus back to the Nurses Home, where she crawled into bed for some much-needed sleep. Several days later, an anxious Mary approached me and confessed - she thought she had left the placenta on the bus – what should she do? We decided there was nothing she could do but wait for any repercussions. Days passed and there was no complaint from the bus company, no enquiry from the Police, and no call to Matron’s office, but my sympathy was definitely with the poor individual who cleaned the bus and opened that plastic bag!
