Welcome to the
February 2017 edition
When you feel like quitting, think about why you started Author unknown Already Christmas seems like a distant memory, the decorations are back in the loft and with any luck the tree has been chopped up, popped in your green bin and taken away with your garden waste. I’d decided to be organised and remember to book a council collection of mine this year – only to find out that they weren’t doing them. Best laid plans!

One month into the year, I wonder how many resolutions have already been given up on? Apparently most have been abandoned in little over a week, with ladies managing a few days longer than men! That is why I chose this month’s quote, after all, there must be a reason why New Year’s resolutions have been made and I guess how long we maintain the activity we have resolved to do, will depend on the strength of the reason for starting. Of course plans for change can be made at any time, so no reason why those abandoned resolutions, can’t be picked back up at any time. Sometimes easier said than done!
Enjoy February and I will be back in a months’ time with your March magazine.

Tickhill and District Lions Our January report was written to meet PDJD]LQH GHDGOLQHV IROORZLQJ WKH YHU\ ȴ UVW sleigh run on Friday 9th December. We had a new Santa that evening, touring Harworth and encouraging record donations. John Cowie enjoyed that evening and a subsequent morning as Santa at Bircotes Pre-school Group so much that on Tuesday 10th January he was inducted as a new member of our Lions club by President Dave Knight. The sleigh runs brought in record donations on a number of evenings as well as the days at Tesco and Asda supermarkets and the total for the fortnight was another record. Many thanks to the Scout Explorers and their leaders and those ‘Friends of Lions’ who assisted in knocking on doors letting as many people as possible know that Santa was on his way. Our sincere thanks for the generous donations made by so many local residents and children. Many thanks also to Trevor Reeve and the Pentagon Group for the loan of the Jeep Grand Cherokee which pulled Santa’s sleigh around in superb style. With chocolate Easter eggs already ordered we will have time during February and March to consider where we can provide ȴ QDQFLDO VXSSRUW IRU ZRUWK\ FDXVHV DQG projects which may improve the lives of others, especially in our local area. In doing this we are conscious that there is a need for Lions to have local knowledge and we really are in need of this in Rossington, Bawtry, Harworth and Bircotes. In this, the 100th year of Lions Clubs round the world, we would love to recruit some new members from all parts of the area. Please contact us if you feel that you may enjoy attending our weekly meetings and helping us to raise funds to enable us to help others in need.

e not Perfect ceremony on Boxing Day last year in one of
couple a few times to know them and remind them of some of the rudiments of marriage. On my last visit, I realised that he was scared like most blokes that I have conducted weddings for in Doncaster. However, she was very happy and looking forward to the ‘D-Day’. Both had their individual reasons for the day to come so soon – he wanted to get ULG RI WKH ȆEXWWHUČľ LHVȇ LQ KLV ERG\ Z KLOHV VKH wanted the day to be a very memorable day in her life. To be fair to him, I think he also wanted the day to be memorable. Halfway through my visit, just when I was about to talk about marriage and how one should conduct oneself in marriage, she pulled up a piece of paper, chipped in and said, “I wonder if you can read this poem on the day for meâ€?. I took the paper from her and read it silently. Interestingly, that was almost the same discussion I was going to have with them. I thought she had made my job easy so we discussed the contents of the poem. It is from Bob Marley entitled, “He’s QRW SHUIHFWČ‹ EXW VKH KDG PRGLČ´ HG LW WR VXLW her situation. It goes like this: He’s not perfect and I aren’t either And the two of us will never be perfect But if we can make each other laugh At least once a day And cause each other to think twice And if we admit to being human and make mistakes Hold on to each other And give the most we can We’re not going to quote poetry And think about each other at every moment But we will give each other A piece of ourselves we know can be broken Don’t hurt each other or change each other And don’t expect more than you can give Don’t analyse Smile when we make each other happy Yell when we are mad 6

But miss each other when we are not there Love hard when there’s love to be had Because perfect people don’t exist But there’s always one perfect person Just for you. We celebrated our silver wedding anniversary last December. On that day, our daughter asked me about the secret of our marriage. Since I always joked with her, I just answered, “I’ve tried to put up with herâ€?. She knew I did QRW PHDQ WKDW VR ZH ODXJKHG LW RÎ? 6HULRXVO\ some marriages are just like the joke I made to my daughter. Some are in a relationship because they have nowhere to go or no one to turn to. They forget that their spouses or partners are not perfect and perfect people don’t exist. On the other hand, I don’t want to condone with abuse in marriage, so if you’re putting up with any abuse in your marriage, then I’ll suggest to you to contact someone or an agency for help. On a serious note, I explained to my daughter that trusting in God and treating your spouse as your best friend were some of the ways to experience a good marriage. As Bob Marley rightly said, treating and respecting your spouse as a human being goes a long way in a lasting relationship . I wonder if I can remind readers that Valentine Day falls in February. It is a month where some people look for love whiles others try to cement a relationship. Still others try to patch up frosty relationships. I wonder if I can take this opportunity to UHPLQG IRONV WKDW WKH FDUGV Čľ RZHUV ULQJV food, fun, etc. may contribute to a better relationship. One year ago I had an idea that a stained glass window in our Church would be a ȴ WWLQJ WULEXWH WR WKH PLQLQJ FRPPXQLW\ and all the men who worked at Harworth Colliery. With the support from the Church PCC we obtained a total cost for the window at £15,000 plus £2,000 contingency for any unseen work during installation, making a total of £17,000. Several weeks ago, I started funding for this project; the response was unbelievable with a very generous amount from a well-known local businessman and a staggering amount from the community. We have reached a sum of £14,000 and with £3,000 to go, I am very honored and humbled that you have entrusted me with the project. What a privilege to have been born in Bircotes and worked at Harworth Colliery with a great workforce. I am proud to be a member of this wonderful community. Harworth Boxing Club Steve Slaney has been a boxing coach for some 20 years and during the whole of this time he has run not-for-profit organisations on a voluntarily basis. During Steve’s time as a trainer he was repeatedly asked by locals in Harworth and Bircotes why don’t you bring boxing into the village? So that is what he decided he would make it happen.
we secured a grant from the Sports Start Up Scheme of Bassetlaw District Council for £25k. In addition we received £5k from Nottinghamshire County Council and we also applied for the Batras Den award and received £2,960 in funding for equipment. We also received donations from local councillors community grants. CISWO are currently in the process of providing disabled toilet facilities. We have so many people to thank. Torne Valley have been absolutely amazing both in a generous donation to the club and for the professional help, guidance and support every step of the way. RPS Windows of Harworth donated and fitted free of charge the UPVC Windows and Entrance Doors along with giving us a Conservatory that once erected to the front of the building will serve as a waiting area for parents. The signage both exterior and interior was all donated by Allsigns International Ltd of Harworth, CL Steel Fabrication Ltd of Retford provided us with a tailor-made, purpose-built bagrack that has to be seen to be believed. The steel used was also provided free of charge by a Sheffield Steelwork company. Local businesses have been supportive and we have used local suppliers for materials needed to complete the renovation work, with discounts as their donation to the community cause.
The old Harworth picture-house on Scrooby Road was suggested as a venue. The owner was tracked down and kindly agreed to allow us to use the front of the building. The building was virtually derelict and some necessary renovation work was quickly undertaken in order for us to get started. The youngsters absolutely loved it and clearly appreciated what was being provided for them. They worked hard on physical fitness and within a short space of time we had an abundance of super-fit boxers. We approached Councillor June Evans who came down to see us and was impressed with what she saw and the efforts from everyone at the boxing club. It quickly took off and it became apparent to all involved that the front of the building was not going to be big enough. We decided we needed to ask the owner if he would allow us to move the club from the front into the much larger but also derelict area at the rear of the same building and we were delighted when he agreed.
Our boxers moved into the newly refurbished gym in September. We have approx 50 members including a ladies keep fit class who attend a Box-fit class which we hold on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings 7pm till 8pm. (only £2.50 per session) this is proving to be incredibly popular.
Councillor Evans discussed our new project with Councillor Dave Challinor. Dave visited the club and after seeing the benefits to the youngsters of the community he was passionate about the project. With his help and determination
The gym has a disabled access ramp with extra wide door access for wheelchairs. We have various keep fit equipment, an Olympic sized boxing ring. Mirrored shadow boxing area and plyometric exercise area. A large keep fit area. Male

& Female Changing rooms with showers. The ‘official opening’ took place on Saturday 7th January. It was a tremendous success and was attended by over 120 from our community and was opened by the Chairman of Bassetlaw District Council and Henry Wharton a famous name from Championship Boxing who brought along 3 of his boxing belts. The boxers put on a demonstration of their fitness regime and the boxing skills they have so far achieved. A trophy award presentation followed to the club boxers to reward their efforts and commitment to the sport. We provide a facility that caters for males and females both young and old of all abilities and capabilities. We have specific Boxing Coaching Classes for Juniors every evening Monday to Friday 4:30pm - 5:30pm. Senior Boxing Coaching classes every evening Monday to Friday 6pm till late. All classes £2.50. We teach our youngsters self-discipline, safety, respect for themselves and others. We are inspired at the results. We would sincerely like to thank everyone who has helped with this project, there are far too many to list individually but please know that without all of you it could not have been achieved.

Compost Angst Home-made compost is a thing of wonder... when all goes well! But too often it goes horribly wrong and instead of rich, sweet, crumbly stuff we end up with a putrefying heap. For a long time I believed making great compost was beyond me. There are so many methods and myths, it all seemed too complicated. Well good news...it isn’t!
Compost containers You can make your own. It’s very easy DSSDUHQWO\ XVLQJ ROG À RRUERDUGV SRVWV DQG wire netting. Unfortunately I am to DIY what elephants are to hang gliding so I opt for ready made bins. Check with your council as many offer cheap bins to encourage recycling. If not, garden centres stock a good variety. Size matters! A container should be 3 ft / 1m square minimum, preferably larger. This allows heat to build up inside the heap which aids the decay process. Position it out of the main line of sight, behind a shed or some tall plants. It worked, but I’m a lazy gardener really and can’t be bothered with all the faff. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - FEBRUARY 2017 Stained Glass Window for All Saints Church In this magazine is the proposed design for a stained-glass window for All Saints Church depicting a coal miner. The idea and design comes from Gerald Holian, a retired Harworth Colliery miner, who tells me the window is about the history of our community as well as an attractive church feature. Supported by the Parish Church Council and the Arch Deacon of the Faculty, Gerald has so far raised £14,000 of the £17,000 needed for the manufacture and installation of the window on what is a listed building. Gerald tells me he has been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of local people; anyone wishing to know more or wanting to donate please contact Gerald on Doncaster 743623 All Saints Church, Harworth An Australian who recently visited our Town has emailed me about her disappointment when, looking for an old family headstone in the churchyard, she found it covered in brambles in the section to the left of the church, near to a culvert. Long gone are the times when every church had a sexton/verger/grave digger; nowadays churches are very dependent on funds raised by their congregation. Speaking to Ann Wilson, who is one of two church wardens, she enlightened me about several problems in the churchyard. Question: what can we as a community do to resolve the problems? We obviously need some volunteers and equipment, and probably a skip, EXW ȴ UVWO\ ZH QHHG WR ZRUN ZLWK WKH Parochial Church Council to look and assess just what the problems are, agree what needs to be done, and how best to do it. Anita enjoys sport and is a keen golfer, in the past she swam for England as a junior, and she is known amongst colleagues for her strong sense of justice, plus her wicked sense of humour! Anita is also a District Councillor. Working as a Town Councillor. Several criteria must be met to become a Town Councillor. True recycling! $EXVH LW /RVH LW B.T. are proposing to remove the public telephone kiosk, (number 01302 742778) on Droversdale Road because of repeated vandalism, theft and antisocial behaviour. It has low public usage, but incurs high repair costs because of the repeated damage. FLDO 2SHQLQJ RI %R[LQJ &OXE Overcoming huge obstacles, the determination and dedication of Steve Slaney and friends has resulted in him achieving his dream for an established Boxing Club in our Town. Interested youngsters are taught not just boxing,
but self-discipline and a healthy lifestyle, all in a safe, supervised environment. Got to be better than just wandering the streets, folks. Death of Bob Turner Councillors were saddened to hear this news. Bob was a man who believed in contributing to the community; some may recall he worked as a Special Constable, he did much to establish Age Concern in this Town, and I remember him working as a voluntary hospital driver. He served as a Parish/ Town Councillor for many years; a couple of Councillors have commented that Council meetings “just won’t be the same without him. How very true. To Make You Smile The English language is, I believe, the richest and most expressive there is; the historic mix of several languages resulting from the occasional invasion over past centuries can also make it quite challenging. And then there is the terminology used by the legal and medical professions, often based on Latin with a bit of Greek thrown in; for example, ‘haem’ is Greek for blood, and so we then get haemorrhage, haematology and even haemorrhoids! Medical words and phrases are everyday language for the professionals but can be confusing to the public. This reminds me of the occasion when, accompanying a consultant and his team on his morning ward round, we entered the room of a lady in late pregnancy who was on bed rest. He told the expectant mum that he wanted to induce her [labour] that afternoon, and how did she feel about that? With a look of relief on her face, she replied “Doctor, I am so pleased you are going to seduce me! Credit to the consultant, he just blinked, then smiled, and reassured her. We all knew she meant induce, not seduce – after all, anyone can get it wrong at times – and both she and we all understood what the important priority was: sure enough, she had a safe delivery and a healthy baby before midnight.
