Welcome to the

This month we celebrate Today Publications 13th birthday!

(. , 0 .( , 1 *

Tickhill Today was the ďŹ rst magazine and during the ďŹ rst week of March 2005, we delivered the ďŹ rst issue to homes across Tickhill and nervously awaited a reaction. Thirteen may be considered unlucky by some, but I feel very lucky to have enjoyed the last 13 years continuing to distribute magazines each month in Tickhill, and then adding Rossington in 2006, Bawtry in 2007, Harworth & Bircotes in 2011, Bessacarr & Cantley in 2013 and most recently DN2. Long may they all continue. A magazine for the expanding Plantation area of Balby is in the pipeline for 2018, so watch this space, or get in touch if you think you would like to be in that magazine! As always, if you contact someone advertising within these pages, do tell them where you found them. Whether that be a business advertising products or services, or a group, charity or organisation promoting their meetings, activities or events. Without the advertisers and community contributors these magazines would not exist, and would not be helping our local communities to thrive. The April issue will be delivered to you late March, just ahead of Easter. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th March. Thank you. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

Best wishes,

Appreciate your Bathroom Our bathrooms are one of the busiest rooms used in the home. Whether this is for showering, bathing or pampering, our bathrooms can often become tired due to the amount of use they get on a daily basis. With a small amount of time and effort you will be able to appreciate your bathroom just that little bit more and put some love back into the room. Imagine entering your bathroom to see neatly folded towels on the hand rail, clean and clear surfaces with just a few of your beauty products by the sink. Candles on the windowsill and essential oils by the bathtub awaiting your next soak in the tub. If this image is far from the reality of how your bathroom currently looks perhaps it’s time to have a fresh start! To appreciate your bathroom more, you need to start with the décor. It is no good if your bathroom appears dull and lifeless with tiles that have seen better days, peeling paint and sealant, and limescale build up clouding the shower door. Start with a deep clean, there are lots of products now that can help with discoloured grout and limescale build up if these are issues in your bathroom.

contains a section on the science of colour.

We tootled off to Nottingham to catch the Viking exhibition ‘Rediscover The Legend’ at the Djanogly Gallery before it closes on 4 March – (you just have time yourselves) and have to say that this show which is a ‘major show’, on tour from the British Museum and York Museums Trust was very underwhelming. I’d met a few people who had seen it and said how good it was, we shouldn’t miss it, etc. There just seemed to be not very many exhibits and rather a lot of display stands. It was a room full of screens, and to be honest the work was OK. We weren’t looking at superb craftsmanship, it was fairly straightforward silver-smithing, and why should a Viking metal worker not be able to do that? There was one very fine iron helmet and lots of coins. No one makes anything anymore, we don’t cook, we don’t sew, we don’t make our own jewellery, but it is not enough to put a few twists of silver bar in a case and call it a ‘major show’. I hope if you went you were more thrilled than me. However, their next show which is a contemporary landscape exhibition looks interesting. Djanogly Art Gallery Nottingham 24 March – 17 June Exhibition ‘Scaling the Sublime- art at the limits of landscape’ claims to be an exhibition which explores affinities with Romanticism in contemporary art practice and the continuing fascination of the Landscape Sublime. Well! If you don’t know what that means you will have to go and see the show! And 3 March - 6 May Rob Hart painting and printmaking exhibition, recent landscapes of the Suffolk coast www. 'HDU )ULHQGV Easter is approaching very fast. By the time you are reading this letter, we may have spent a few weeks in Lent. Over the past few weeks, I have been considering what to do in Lent. I know from experience that most of you may be like me – wondering what to get rid of in order to be of a better shape, spiritually and physically. Interestingly, one of the things we do is fast from food and attitudes. Harworth Colliery Football Club March Update! Hello and welcome from all at the Football Club as we enter a vital month for the Colliery and one where we can really push on in our quest for the League title and promotion to the Northern Counties East.To put this into some perspective, the club hasn’t played at that standard for 30 years and it will be great not just for those associated with the Football Club but for the whole of the community. In March we have all of our games at home and if there is one thing that we could hope for more of is people through the gates supporting the players. We do well at the level we are at, but we need every single one of you, when the players see the extra numbers at home or at away games it gives them that bit more incentive and we want to have a sense of ‘in it together’ mentality, so please look at the following fixtures and if you can make it then please do so. Our last 4 home games have yielded 26 goals conceding just 2 so the Jones and Co is certainly the place to be and the new management team have settled in excellenty but I know they are keen to get more through the gates. 3rd March V Dronfield Town Reserves, 17th Askern, 24th AFC Bentley, 31st the big Bassetlaw Derby in Retford FC, all are 3pm kick offs The club did receive some bad news in February and that was to hear of the passing of Dave Bradshaw former third team manager for a number of years. We observed a minutes silence for Dave at a recent game, our thoughts are with all the family at this very sad time.

As well as this Sponsorship the Club was delighted to have received the donation of a new Mower donated jointly by logistics provider Wincanton and outdoor power products specialist Husqvarna Group UK, who currently work together at the Doncaster Trax Park site, pictured is Tom Crossland Depot Centre Manager who had this to say, “At Wincanton, we are always looking for ways in which we can support our employees, and more broadly the local community. A number of our colleagues and their families here at Trax Park are affiliated with the club, so we are pleased to be able to play our part, alongside Husqvarna Group UK, with the upkeep of their pitches”, many thanks to Tom and Brendan for arranging from the club and the Ground staff as it will be vital in the coming months. All of our teams will have an extremely busy month as we have had a number of cancellations with the Ladies and the U21’s in Feb and all the Junior teams will be in full swing for their Spring League Again, last call to arms to get people up and through the gates, there are a lot of new families into the area and we would love to get more involved with club, we feel at the heart of the community and want as many apart of this as possible.

Reserves are pictured here advertising new sponsors British Sugar, again this is something the club simply can’t live without so we thank them for their contribution. 18 HARWORTH TODAY

By Rachel Leverton

Fertile Ground This month the days get longer and the sun gets stronger...we hope! However, March is famously temperamental and if the soil where you are is still wet and cold then it’s wise to delay planting and sowing until the temperature rises.

Potassium makes grass hardier, promotes germination and improves vegetable and fruit yields. The proportions of each macro-nutrient will be printed on the packet. Equal amounts of each nutrient make for a good general-purpose fertiliser.

Plant nutrient reserves are low at this time of year so, as the soil warms up, it’s time to think about fertiliser.

A lawn will need a good balance of nitrogen and phosphorus to guarantee lush green grass with a healthy root system capable of withstanding dry spells. Fruiting plants need higher proportions of potassium.

Many gardeners are a bit frightened of fertiliser. All those chemical symbols on the side of the packet are rather reminiscent of school chemistry lessons. In fact, the basics are quite simple.

There are other macro-nutrients: Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, which plants obtain freely from the air and water; and calcium, magnesium and sulphur, which should be present in any good general-purpose fertiliser.

NPK - This can be observed on the side of most fertiliser packages. The letters stand for:

Plants also need micro-nutrients: Iron, Manganese, Zinc, Boron and Molybdenum.

N - Nitrogen

Plants take all these nutrients and build everything they need from scratch, including vitamins. What plants cannot do is absorb vitamins directly from things such as pet food, milk or so-called fertilisers which contain vitamins, proteins and fats.

P - Phosphorous K - Potassium Together these are known as the macronutrients and each of them has its own use. Nitrogen primarily feeds the leafy above-theground parts of the plants. Phosphorous promotes strong roots. 26 HARWORTH TODAY

So, don’t be intimidated by fertiliser. Decide what your plants need then read the label. It’s easy as ABC..or rather NPK!

Hi Everyone, It feels like winter is still with us, but today has been sunny so there’s a hope of spring around the corner. We have been so busy here which is great as it means more dogs and cats are rehomed making more room for others to come in and hopefully the list of waiting dogs and cats will get a little smaller. We have been doing lots of fund raising over the last few weeks. Marks and Spencer have been of particular support to us in 2017/2018. We will be outside their Wheatley Hall Rd store over most of March with some of our dogs, so please come along and say hello. The M&S team will also be coming to the Sanctuary to take part in a Charity day, dog walking and looking at those odd jobs that we always struggle to get around to doing. They are an amazing team and we will always be grateful for their support. Race night with a Pie and Pea supper will be held in Misson Community Hall on the 24th Feb, the last one was such fun so we hope this one raises lots of money for us. A May Ball will be held at The Crown Hotel Bawtry on the Friday the 18th of May. This event promises to be a fantastic evening a drink on arrival 3 course meal, disco, raffle and auction. There will also be a photographer to capture that special moment. Eastside Magazine will be there to cover the whole evening, so get out those beautiful evening gowns or cocktail wear and join us for this

OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS AW During the month of March supporters of Target Ovarian Cancer try in various ways to make women more aware of the signs and symptoms of Ovarian Cancer. This cruel cancer takes the lives of approx. 11 women in the U.K. every day. It is often called the silent killer because it is often diagnosed it its advanced stage. Awareness of the symptoms among women in very low with only 3 out of 10 women been able to correctly name any symptoms, and some women believing falsely that their regular smear test detect this type of cancer. Before 2013 I was one of those women who could not name any symptoms and believed that having had a hysterectomy it would not happen to me

– how wrong I was. Now I try to make sure that others are better informed. The symptoms to look out for are :Persistent Bloating round your tummy. Pelvic or abdominal pain. Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly Needing to pass water more often. If you experience any of these symptoms, keep a diary of how regular they are and visit your G.P. also, be aware of your family history this disease can be hereditary. Thank you for reading this article, please pass the information on to your friends, make them aware of this disease. It is only through making people aware of the symptoms that this cancer can be caught in its early stages and more people can be cured. Carole Hughes
