Today
Welcome to the
March 2019 edition
This month Today Publications celebrates its 14th birthday! Yes, it is 14 years since the first issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. I thank everyone who has supported any of the 6 publications that we now have during those 14 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they find them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! Next month I will be adding our 7th magazine to those published. This time a publication for the residents of Woodfield Plantation, Carr Lodge and Alverley. If you would like to be in this magazine then please let me know. I hope that you will continue to enjoy YOUR community magazine for many years to come. The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 15th March. Don’t forget to let me have details of anything happening over Easter for that issue. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.
Best wishes,
Paula x

COMMUNITY
Dear Friends, Everybody goes through difficult times in one’s lifetime. For some, it can be loss of a loved one, a job or a relationship. For others, it can be an event that has broken them over the years and hence, make not to move on.
Talking of events that can break people, I am reminded of the Old Testament stories of the Israelites in exile. God had promised to be with them in a covenant relationship by loving, blessing and protecting them. As part of that relationship, the Israelites promised to love God by obeying his laws and being good to each other and their neighbours. However, the Israelites broke their promises many times, generation after generation. God was very patient with them and warned them through his prophets that if they carried on with their disobedience, a day of reckoning would come when they would have to bear the consequences of their actions. It happened that God allowed them to be overran by the Babylonians and they were shipped into exile in Babylon. In exile, the Israelites were disappointed because they could not relate with God as before. Although God was still present in their lives and even went on to encourage them to live their lives in the normal situation, their disappointments overshadowed their faith in God. They even went further to accused God of not loving them. Isaiah 49: 14 states, ‘But Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.” There are times in our life situations that we feel like being forsaken. As a Minister, I have heard it many times when people ask the question, “where was God when …” It is okay to feel forsaken especially when you feel or think that the situation in which you find yourself is not your fault. However, I wonder if in your accusations or complaints, you have given God a chance to respond. The following was God’s response to the Israelites (Isaiah 49 15 – 16): “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Like Christmas and Valentine, Mothering Sunday has become a commercial issue in the western world. I am not saying that we should not be grateful to our mothers, godmothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, and so on. They are very important part of our family lives. However, for some people, Mothering Sunday is a difficult time in their lives especially when they have been through rough times by not having a mother figure in their lives. Sometimes, going through life situations can be like not having a mother figure in your life – forgotten, lonely, unloved, rejected, unprotected, forsaken, frustrated, and so on. But God has an answer for you in your questions – your mother may have forgotten about you, but I will not think of forgetting you. His reason is that he has tattooed you on his palms.
6
In the Old Testament days, a tattoo was a permanent mark and would never disappear. In other words, God is saying to you that you may feel insignificant, unloved, lonely, etc. but in God’s eyes, you are important, very important. He sees you every day and thinks about you every day of your life. He remembers you every day and wants to be part of your life. I wonder if you can take the trouble to trust him and tell him of what you think of the situation in which you are in now. That is also called prayer. You know what, God heard the cries of the Israelites, but it took about seventy years for God to lead the Israelites back from exile into Jerusalem. In your prayers, the answer may not be instant, but he is with you and he will carry through your situation. It may feel like seventy years, but remember, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Stay positive in your struggles and continue to trust the God who will never forget you. Yours sincerely,
Rev Dr. Frank Okai-Sam Methodist Minister Adwick, Bawtry, Harworth, Sprotbrough & Tickhill

A mining exhibition
entitled ‘Dealing with the Past: Coal, Community and Change (1965-2015)’ will be coming to Harworth & Bircotes Town Hall during May of this year. The coal industry has a long and proud association with the arts and this travelling exhibition aims to deal with the contested memories of coalmining in the region over a fifty-year period – both with the 1984-85 strike and the end of coal mining more generally – through iconic photographs and images. It is an important topic as the East Midlands region was a particular focus of the strike in 198485 and these histories have not been forgotten with some long-term resentment continuing to the present day. Two local ex pit lads, Cllr David Challinor and Pete Burton have been involved in putting this together. A special afternoon with a guest speaker from Nottingham University is planned, more details to follow in future magazines. T
New Play Area for Harworth
Children in Harworth and Bircotes have a brand new play area to visit thanks to the completion of a Council Housing development in the town. The new playground on Amanda Road brings Bassetlaw District Council’s award-winning housing development, in partnership with Woodhead Living, to a successful conclusion. Over the last three years, the partnership has created a total of 83 new homes that include a mix of modern and energy efficient flats; two, three and four bedroomed houses and bungalows, in addition to the new playground. Cllr Steve Scotthorne, Cabinet Member for Housing at Bassetlaw District Council, said: “When this project was proposed it used a former playing field to provide space for much needed additional housing. As part of that development the Council and Woodhead promised to reinstate a play area and we have delivered on that promise.”

Harworth Colliery Football Club March Update! Hello and many thanks to taking the time to read our March Update and for following the progress of our club. It’s been a frustrating time late January and early February with the weather taking centre stage and games have been few and far between. At the time of writing our 1st team remain second bottom 4 points adrift from safety, but we always have to look for the positives. On the 26th of Jan we took on local rivals Armthorpe and although the scoreline was disapointing conceding in the last minute and losing 1-2, the attendance that day was 213, an amazing turn out from the Juniors with Samie Holmes U11’s as Mascots and all of the U15’s with lots of new faces which was great to see. That day we recorded the highest attendance in all the country for the level we are playing at which is an amazing acheivement, made better with the fact that Doncaster Rovers was in the FA Cup too. I know our gates won’t keep us up but it will push the players on and we want to see more of it as we head into Spring clinging to the hope that we can stay up. Our Fixtures for the 1st team in March are as Follows, 2nd at Home v Swallownest, 9th Away V Campion FC, 16th at Home V Glasshoughton, 23rd at Home V Shirebrook, so three of our 4 games at home which could be huge for us. Please do all you can to support the club and help us stay in the league we have worked 32 years to get into. We have also had some excellent news this month as Jones and Co Solicitors have extended their Ground sponsorship for a further 4 seasons, therefore it will remain as the Jones and Co Recreational ground, we can’t thank them enough for their support over the years and means even more now that they have their own premises on Shrewsbury Road at the old police Station. We are truly blessed to have so much local support and long may it continue.
Oughtibridge on Penalties after the game finished 2-2, this followed a day after our U11 Girls won their Mini Shield Semi Final 3-1 with a Hatrick from Madison Round, that final to be played on the 9th of March at Shelley FC in Huddersfield. Home Fixtures in March for the Ladies are 3rd V Doncaster Rovers Foundation, 24th V Sheffield Utd Community, 31st V Worksop Town. Along with our U9’s girl we are extemely proud of this section of the club and we hope that we can grow the number of teams throughout the age groups as we feel that the interest is there, this is something we will look to do again over the summer months. As ever it’s a busy time for our Juniors with all teams progressing so well, special mention to Paul Coward and Wayne Baileys U15’s for reaching their Cup final to be played at Thorne on the 10th of March V Scawthorpe Scorpions, I know they would love your support. Also the U11 boys run by Adam King and Shaun Kingston for winning their league, we all know Football for the Juniors is about enjoying themselves and winning anything is an added bonus but it sure bodes well for the future. Again thanks for taking the time and please get up and follow the lads and lasses whenever you can #VivaColliery All the up to date news can be found on the clubs Website on Pitch Hero, enter Harworth Colliery FC, also by following us on Twitter @HCIFC or on our Facebook page Many thanks

Our reserves, like the 1sts have seen numerous postponements but will be hoping a good run of weather comes where they can get playing and progressing hopefully in a couple of Cup competitions, one of which being the Floodlit cup where they take on league above Appleby Frodingham on the 28th February away. The whole of March they are away except for the 30th where they take on Retford United Development at home, good luck Bren and all the lads. Our Ladies have gone from strength to strength and remain second in the 1st division. On the 10th of Feb they progressed through to the Shield Final beating

Bircotes Library Grant success
at St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School The Foundation unit has close links with our local community. After taking the children to do some math’s, Miss Orkney applied for a grant and our friends at the One Stop Shop recently awarded us with a £500 to enhance our natural environment. Our aims are to grow and harvest, and to attract various insects to study and help protect the environment. We have been able to purchase sunshades, soil and plants and to create a digging pit. We also hope to buy another fruit tree so the children will be able to harvest and cook with the produce. We feel very privileged to have been awarded the grant and would like to thank the One Stop Shop for their kindness.

Hi Everyone, How lovely to see the snowdrops popping their little heads out and at last we can focus on spring being around the corner. The Sanctuary is full to overflowing, however we have been really busy since Christmas watching dogs and cats go to their forever homes. We are taking care of some beautiful dogs and cats at the moment, so if you are looking for that special pet, young or old please come to see us. Our kennel carers are very knowledgeable and will let you know which dog they feel would be right for you. When someone adopts a dog from us, we ask that they come to our Dog Listener talk on a Saturday morning before taking their chosen dog home. This is especially helpful if you are a first-time dog owner but everyone finds this very helpful, even people that have had dogs all of their life find the talk is very informative. We are holding a table top sale in the Scout Headquarters on St Marys Road in Tickhill on the 6th April. Why not clear the clutter and help our Sanctuary. There will be a 50p entry, also cake, tea
and coffee available. Price for a table will be £12. Please call Janice if you wish to purchase a table on 07590 455340 she will be happy to help. On 17th May we are holding our Mayflower Red Carpet Ball at the Crown Hotel, Bawtry. This will be a grand affair so get out that posh frock and come and have some fun also raise money for a good cause too. Cocktail dress or Ball gown and black tie for the men.
Photo on the red carpet and drink on arrival, 3 course meal, live auction, dancing and disco until late. Why not come and join us, The Crown Hotel will be also doing special rates for overnight stays too. Tickets for the Ball are priced at £50, well worth a fantastic night out with food. Please call me on 07776 783242 to purchase tickets for the Ball. The number to call for the Sanctuary is 01302 711330.

Becoming More Self-Aware
Thinking about the last 7 days…
You may have heard phrases such as…
(There are a few examples at the beginning of this article)
What annoyed you? What did you enjoy more than expected? What could you be grateful for? Where did you make a mistake and what can you lesson from that mistake? What action should you have taken but procrastinated on?
“You can’t fix a problem you don’t know exists”
Every day, 5 minutes before you go to bed, write down your answers to them and use these answers to set targets or at least increase awareness in the direction you wish the next 24 hours to take.
If you take only even a couple of minutes to think about your answers to these questions, you may find some interesting and always useful insights. With so much information swimming around our heads, it’s no wonder we rarely take the time to reflect, but we should. Self-awareness is one of the most overlooked, simplest and yet extremely powerful ways to take responsibility for your position in life and create genuine noticeable improvements.
16
“What gets monitored gets done” “You don’t know what you don’t know” …and so on. I believe them all! There are as many connections in 1 cubic cm of your brain as there are stars in the entire Milky Way galaxy…in other words, there’s a lot going on upstairs! Unless you find a way to consciously let your brain know what to look out for (what’s important to you) then it’ll make the choices for you.
It’s a simple exercise but one you’ll feel working after only a short time doing it. As always, go create a day and life that counts & always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!
So, let’s be smart. Make a list of 5-10 questions you feel will provide you with the best insight and reminders into the areas of your life you wish to improve.

Jeannette was actively involved in promoting events such as ‘Mile of Coins’, ‘Mile of Scarves’ which are then sold raising money for the charity, the ‘Memory Tree’ and the ‘Mid-Summer Walk’, all designed to raise funding for the DCDT in order to benefit the residents in and around Doncaster.
We have made three awards of a special certificate, signed by our Patron the Countess of Wessex Sophie Rhys-Jones, wife of Prince Edward recognising the individual contribution to their local community and there is a special plaque awarded to one of the nominees.
For the certificates:
Peter Oliver and Roger Cousins Peter has long experience of serving the community as a member of the Wadworth Parish Council. Both Peter and Roger are active ‘litter collectors’ and can be seen regularly collecting within the village and the roads leading in and out of the village. Both are instrumental in providing the village ‘Summer Flower’ displays and the village decorated Christmas tree display, making Wadworth a place to be proud of, by those who live there and all who pass through.
A posthumous award was also made to the family of the late Jennette Fish MBE. Jeannette worked tirelessly as long time secretary of the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and helped raise funding for the Scanner Appeal, as well as raise funding for the building and equipment of the St. John’s Hospice in Doncaster.
For the plaque: Nigel Cannings
Nigel is our local Independent Councillor for Tickhill as well as a councillor with the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. Nigel is also the Tickhill ‘Snow Warden’ as well as a Tickhill & District Lions Christmas Float supporter. Nigel gives freely of his time year in and year out in all weather conditions as a volunteer ‘litter collector’ in Tickhill helping to make Tickhill the extremely clean and tidy place in which to live and be proud of and enjoyed by all residents and envied by all who pass through the town. Nigel undertakes several other duties including being part of the Pavilion Management Committee and the Advisory Committee of our local council.

Work Underway on State of the Art Pilgrims Galley
Work has begun on transforming a redundant council building into a state of the art Pilgrims Gallery at Bassetlaw Museum in Retford giving visitors an opportunity to find out more about pilgrim Leaders William Brewster of Scrooby and William Bradford from Austerfield as well as the views of the native Americans they encountered in the New World. The Pilgrims Gallery is part of a £750,000 Heritage Lottery funded project which commemorates the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America in 1620. When completed, the Gallery will feature a recreation of William Brewster’s study, where people can learn more about the life of Brewster who lived at Scrooby Manor and worshipped at nearby St Wilfrid’s Church.

Sell your unwanted items or presents and get rid of some clutter into the bargain Table hire is £5.00 per table, proceeds from which will be donated to the St John’s Hospice.
The Study part of the gallery will include a combination of high-tech digital elements including augmented reality film and more hands-on activities for children such as block printing and writing with a quill and ink, echoing Brewster’s history of running a printing press in Leiden, where he fled with his family after leaving Nottinghamshire in 1608 The gallery will also include interpretation panels highlighting the themes of Religious Tolerance, Freedom and Migration; challenges which are as relevant in today’s world as they were when the Separatists fought for the right to practice their beliefs in the early 17th century. The gallery is expected to be complete in late May 2019. Councillor Jo White, Deputy Leader of Bassetlaw District Council said: “We have worked really closely with the gallery designers to ensure that visitors of all ages find the experience fun, entertaining and thought-provoking. The fully staffed gallery will allow us to signpost visitors around Retford on a mini-Pilgrim trail and on to the surrounding villages where our Pilgrims lived and worshipped. I believe this will have a positive impact on our visitor economy and attract many new visitors to our area.”

Harworth & Bircotes Tenants & Residents Association HARWORTH & BIRCOTES
TENANTS AND RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION The group held their first meeting of 2019 in February. Due to a mix-up by BDC who had double-booked the Community Centre. January’s meeting had to be cancelled. Secretary has sent a complaint to BDC, as our booking had been made 12 months in advance and it entailed a lot of work informing members that it had to be cancelled. The committee wish all members and the community in general, a very Happy New Year. There were discussions about where members would like to go on our outings, and several suggestions were made. Members were asked to find out the information for the places they would like us to visit and let Secretary have them and they can be discussed at the next meeting when a decision can be made that will suit the majority. Members were informed of work which is being done to create a state-of-the-art Pilgrims Gallery in Retford, to commemorate the Brewster family from Scrooby and the Bradford family from Austerfield, who travelled to Plymouth to sail to America on the Mayflower. At next month’s meeting there will be a presentation by Angie Dainty on Community Health and Wellbeing, which will be of great
interest to many of our members. The visit to the pantomime in Retford had been a great success as always, and a preliminary booking has been made and we await news of prices. It was noted that the Town Council had once again voted that the parish precept will not be increased this year. A new Town Councillor has been co-opted, and her name is Lynn Schuller, who has lived in Harworth all her life. There was no police presence at our meeting, but their report will be submitted and published in the monthly Harworth & Bircotes Today magazine. Some members commented on the amount of rubbish littering the roadside, particularly on the Tickhill Road, some members said they had seen men working on that road clearing the rubbish, but it is unacceptable for people to throw their rubbish out of moving cars and expect the “litter fairies” to come along and clear it up on what is a very dangerous stretch of road.
further, or better still, park on the drives that these houses all have. Please, if you have a drive, use it, for the sake of the other residents. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday 5 March 2019, starting at 10.30 am, so anyone wanting to come along and find out about the Activity Timetable for Community Health & Wellbeing, Angie Dainty will be present to give any information you require. Please also note that the group has a Craft afternoon every Tuesday at the Devonshire Road Centre, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Everyone is welcome, to what is a lively and friendly session, with refreshments. There were comments that the bins on The Green were unable to be emptied, due to inconsiderate parking by residents in the houses leading up to the bungalows, meaning that the bin lorry could not get past. Imagine if that had been a fire engine or an ambulance, with the possibility of lives being lost simply because someone couldn’t park a few yards

IN THE GARDEN
Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t they, but annuals, by their definition, don’t. In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. They are also easy-to-grow, so are brilliant for beginner gardeners. For best results sow them as thinly as possible, cover lightly with sifted soil then firm it down. Protect them from cats and birds with netting until the seedlings are well established then thin them out to the distance recommended on the packet. Good flowers for the annual-novice include poppy, calendula, larkspur, fried- egg plants (limnanthes), lovein-the-mist, clarkia and cornflowers. If I could grow only one it would be Nigella damascena (love-in-the-mist). It’s an old cottage-garden plant and ‘Miss Jekyll’ is a beautiful, soft, pure blue variety with the added bonus of stripy seed pods once the flowers have faded.
them singly in small pots or directly into the earth. If you sow them directly, plant two seeds into each hole and thin to one once they are established. They may need to be staked as they grow. There are some terrific varieties. A favourite of mine is Prado Red, which as the name suggests, produces deep red flowers. If you pinch them out, they‘ll grow to five feet and produce numerous blooms on each plant. If sunflowers are the kings of the hardy annuals, then sweet peas are surely the fragrant queens. Oldfashioned or antique varieties tend to be best for scent though their flowers are slightly smaller. The great thing about sweet peas is that you have to pick them to prolong flowering so you have a wonderful excuse to have a fragrant home all summer long. Sweet peas should be planted a little deeper than other annuals. They are very thirsty flowers. My granddad used to line his sweet pea trenches with lots of wet newspaper. He won prizes for his blooms, so he obviously knew a thing or two about it. Next time you’re at the garden centre...walk right on by the showy (and expensive) potted plants and head for the seed section. For a very small outlay you can add colour, shape, interest and completely transform your plot ...and if you don’t like it, you can always change it again next year. Happy gardening!
The king of the hardy annuals though has to be the sunflower. Children particularly love to grow them. Sow

POLICE WARN PUBLIC OVER RECENT ONLINE SCAMS :HM REVENUE AND CUSTOMS ALERT
What you need to know Action Fraud has experienced an increase in the reporting of malicious calls, voicemails, text messages or emails to members of the public purporting to be from HMRC. The fraudsters state that as a result of their non-payment of tax or other duty, the victim is liable to prosecution or other legal proceedings such as repossession of belongings to settle the balance but can avoid this by arranging for payment to be made immediately by method such as bank transfer or by iTunes gift cards. If the victim is hesitant or refuses to comply, the suspect makes a threat such as immediate arrest, bailiffs or in cases where the victim appears to be of overseas origin; deportation. Often, the period for which the tax is allegedly due is distant enough to guarantee the victim will have little, if any, paperwork or ability to verify the claims. Once the money is paid the suspects sever all contact.
It is vital that the public exercise caution when receiving messages or telephone calls of this nature What you need to do Always question unsolicited requests for your personal or financial information. Just because someone knows your basic details (such as your name and contact details), it doesn’t mean they are genuine. Instead, contact the company directly using trusted methods such as a known email address or phone number. Listen to your instincts. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it. No genuine organisation will ask you to pay taxes, bills or fees using iTunes Gift Cards, or any other type of voucher. Don’t be rushed or pressured into making a decision. Under no circumstances would a genuine bank or some other trusted organisation force you to make a financial transaction on the spot Report Phishing attempts. If you receive a call, text or email of this nature and have not lost money, report this as a phishing attempt to Action Fraud. If you think you’ve been targeted or want to report a fraud incident, please call Action Fraud as soon as possible on 0300 123 2040 or via Action Fraud website www.actionfraud.police.uk NEWS FROM RECENT ARRESTS/ PROSECUTIONS/COURT RESULTS OVER PAST 3 MONTHS. With this in mind the NHS offers the vaccine free of charge to the following groups : • People 65 and over • Children aged 6 months to 2 years who are at risk of flu • Pregnant women • People with medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma and heart disease • People who receive carer’s allowance or are the main carer for someone who may be at risk if you become ill • People living in a long-stay care home Finally, if you are due to travel abroad and vaccinations are required for the country you are visiting, PLEASE contact the Practice 6 WEEKS BEFORE you are due to go. Recently several patients have come to the surgery only 2 weeks before they are due to travel. This is not sufficient time and puts those people at risk as the vaccinations may not then be effective. January and February saw 9 of our swimmers compete at the Nottinghamshire County Championships (some pictured below). They did amazingly well including many personal bests, making the ďŹ nals, progressing up the County rankings and also achieving times that qualify them already for the County Championship in 2020. One of our swimmers also achieved times which will see him compete at the Regional Championships in May. Coming up later in February we visit the Nottinghamshire Champs again but this time with relay teams. All our club are now looking forward to our very own Club Championships which are due to take place in March. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MARCH 2019 Keeping you aware of developments in our Town is of primary importance; I will continue to keep you updated via this magazine, and you can access the Council website and the Council Facebook page. Any queries: contact me or other councillors, we will, as always, try to help REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY A Lot is Happening in Harworth and Bircotes behind the scenes and I wanted to update you on a couple of Regeneration Projects that the District Council is working on. Firstly, the District Council is looking at a scheme for Residential Development on Common Lane; a report on this went to Bassetlaw Council’s December Cabinet meeting. I have long felt that that we need the right mix of housing to serve all sections of our community and I have taken that message to the District Council. I hope that when we see a planning application it contains affordable housing, and the bungalows you tell me we badly need. Secondly, as our Town grows, it’s important that we get more amenities, plus more facilities for families with
32
young children, and more employment sites. At the time of writing this, there is a report scheduled for Bassetlaw’s Cabinet in mid-February that looks at the growth of the Town Centre. I will be pushing hard to make sure that Bassetlaw projects recognise these needs, and that by working with the Town Council we can deliver schemes that everybody can be proud of. The Precept. The Harworth and Bircotes Town Council Meeting on 28th January was primarily called to set the Precept; I am pleased to report that Council agreed there will be no increase for the financial year starting April 2019/20, which means it will remain at the same level as in this current financial year. Gritting. In response to a question from the public about gritting the roads and paths: this is primarily a responsibility of Notts. County Council – their website www. nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ transport/gritting/grit-bins shows their priority roads for gritting: Looking specifically at Harworth and Bircotes on the County Gritting Routes Map: 1.Main Roads for gritting are plotted in purple; these are Scrooby Road, Main Street and Styrrup Road, Blyth Road and Tickhill Road, and they are treated when ‘ice on roads is forecast`. 2. Severe Weather Routes, shown as orange, are Bawtry Road, Grosvenor Road, Waterslack, Whitehouse and Droversdale Roads. Grit bins (Yellow) are provided and maintained by Notts. County ‘where a junction
hazard is present`. There are also Blue Grit Bins placed in various locations within the Town which are the responsibility of the Town Council. If empty, you can contact the County Council by telephone: 03005 008080, or via their website: www.nottscc. gov.uk or the Town Clerk (Blue Bins) 01302 759037. The Town Council pays to have some areas gritted, such as the car park and cemeteries. Welcome to a New Town Councillor. I am pleased to report that Lynne Schuller has joined the Council. Lynne is a recently retired school nurse, she has lived here for many years, and she is committed to serving this community. Relying on the Public. Thanks to those who told me about a tree on Scrooby Road obscuring a Belisha beacon from the view of approaching motorists. The tree was growing in a hedge next to the new pedestrian crossing near All Saints Primary School; the problem was quickly reported to Highways, who contacted the school. I understand Dave Lewis volunteered to help the school deal with the tree what a trooper! However, this again illustrates the importance of members of the public reporting issues, as there is no other means by which Notts. County Council would identify a problem with a tree, empty grit bin, potholes e.g. on Bawtry Road and elsewhere - so your information really does count. A New Store on Scrooby Road I was tasked in late January with helping to open the new store. People were waiting outside for the allocated

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MARCH 2019 opening time, I was given a huge (and heavy) pair of scissors, and at the end of the countdown the ribbon was cut and people flooded through the doors. So, what does a new store mean for Harworth and Bircotes? I see it as a sign that retailers are now recognising the opportunities our Town offers. In recent years we have seen investment from housing developers, plus there is clear evidence of growth in nearby industrial parks. Retail is often the last to invest, and research shows that some firms consider a minimum population of 10,000, others look for 20,000 or more before opening a store in a given community – naturally, they are looking for enough customers to ensure sustainability. I remain convinced that we will see more retail development – but sadly, nothing from the banks!
on the skills and interests of residents. The first aim is to make veg growing a year-round activity that supports the work of Right Choice to raise self-esteem and confidence, and success will build on the skills and qualities of residents. The longer term aim of the project is to create opportunities for work on local green spaces and find routes into further training and employment for participants. We look forward to starting on the 26th of February and are working for 2 major harvests this year! The residents at Right Choice are building new and better lives for themselves and overcoming many challenges in their recovery from addiction. The most important things that ‘grow` from these programmes will be in people’s lives - growing fresh veg will be an added bonus!
Right Choice Project: Build, Grow, Cook and Eat. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council and Bassetlaw District Council are working in partnership with the locally-based Right Choice supported housing unit. We will be delivering two 12-week programmes on veg growing based in the grounds of the housing unit. The programmes are called Build, Grow, Cook and Eat and will include teaching all the different elements of the name. Residents will learn the skills needed to build their own professional quality raised beds and composting facilities. These will be used to grow veg, cook it and eat in shared meals The first programme will cover the basics, with the second being a progression to build
Update More Proposed Street Names on Simpson Park Main Gate Drive is the suggested name for the connecting road between Scrooby Road and Simpson Park that travels past Asda. Continuing the theme of past Nottinghamshire coal mines, the proposed names for another four streets are: Brinsley Way, Moorgreen Way, Newstead Grove, and Selston Close. A Strange Sight on Snipe Park Play Area. I was pleased when the new, interactive play equipment was eventually installed. So, what was a group of mature adults doing there one morning at the end of January dancing and prancing
to the music and generally having a good time? “Just testing the new equipment” was the reply I was given… hmm. From Bassetlaw District Council Business Grant. Bassetlaw District Council offers a grant up to £2,000 match funded to new businesses within or about to relocate into the District. The grant can be used mainly to purchase equipment and towards marketing/advertising. Existing businesses can apply provided they have not been trading for more than 2 years. For further information on how to apply, contact: fiona.humpage@ bassetlaw.gov.uk Garden Waste Collections for 2019 will start early March and run to late November, the cost remains at £30. Last year, almost 8,000 residents helped recycle 2,6000 tonnes of garden waste. For more information, visit www.bassetlaw.gov.uk/ gardenwaste, or call 01909 533533, ask for Environment Services and press 1 for Garden Waste Collections. A new State of the Art Pilgrim Gallery at Bassetlaw Museum, Retford, should be completed by May 2019, in readiness for the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s voyage to America in 1620. Visitors will be able to learn about the Pilgrim Leaders William Bradford of Austerfield and William Brewster who lived at Scrooby Manor. Funded by Heritage Lottery money, the Pilgrim Gallery will feature William Brewster’s study, which will

off and defunct telephones and mobile…something weird was definitely happening. Strangely, 15 mins. later the television worked perfectly. Yes, I now have new phones in place, a new mobile that I am trying to familiarise myself with, and I am monitoring the performance of the television very closely.
To Make You Smile: Me and Technology. Strange things happen in my house when it comes to phones, the television, the computer and even occasionally the garage doors – in the past I have arrived back home to find the doors have mysteriously rolled up – they have now just been replaced. My phones recently developed the habit of dying in mid-conversation, and no, nothing to do with replacing the batteries. Recently I was talking to the D.W.P. when the phone suddenly went dead; I re-dialled - this time using the phone in the hall - got back to the appropriate officer, and again we were cut off halfway through. Refusing to be beaten, I decided to use my mobile – would you believe it, this went dead, too! At the same time the television was blasting out because the volume refused to decrease and when I tried to switch the telly off, nothing happened. So, I was left with a frozen telly that refused to switch

The Parish of Harworth and Bircotes, Styrrup and Hesley (All Saints’ Church, Harworth)
Hello Readers! Well, here we are in March. Hopefully the worst of the weather is behind us, but this time last year over in Pembrokeshire, our children were building snow men! If it’s March, then we must be approaching Lent and then looking ahead to Easter – the most important of Christian celebrations. We have lots of lovely things planned and you are invited to it all. Remember that we are far more than a building – me and the congregation live to serve our parish, and you will see us get increasingly active. One event we especially need to tell you about is the Easter Midnight Mass we’re holding at 11pm on Saturday 20 April in All Saints’. Help us get the word out that this service will – we hope, if people come forward – include the baptism of adults. So, if you have always wanted to be baptised (aka christened) but never got round to it, get in touch with me asap. No previous connection to the church nor the Christian faith is necessary. Over the last few months a group of volunteers - Steve, Sue and Dave, led by Roger Smith have been clearing the most overgrown half of the church-yard. They have done an amazing job many of the headstones covered in ivy and bramble have been cleared, but there is still a lot more to do. The next stage will be to apply chemical herbicides to control re-growth. We all know the churchyard is a public place and as such has many welcome visitors. However, dog walkers need to be aware that potentially harmful chemicals are to be used and that dogs should be kept on a short leash. We would remind owners that they are bringing dogs into the churchyard at risk of them being affected by the herbicide.
