Welcome to the

March

24H

2017 edition

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow Audrey Hepburn

I read the advice in this month’s Garden View article with interest, I’ve never been particularly interested in gardening before, but this year I have a new garden that has been lovingly cared for by the previous owner for many years. It has well stocked borders with everything from tiny snowdrops to a huge Lime tree within it, (including huge numbers of things whose names I don’t know), it has struck me that I had better develop some green fingers if the garden has any hope of continuing to look as good next spring as it does now! March does bring with it the promise of the spring to come, as daffodils make their way into flower and early buds begin to appear. Don’t forget to change your clocks at the end of the month – which will mean that it stays lighter for longer into the evening and the days will gradually lengthen. The April issue will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th March. Easter falls a couple of weeks into April this year, so don’t forget to let me have details of any Easter events taking place around the area. Enjoy March and I will be back in a months’ time with your April magazine.

Best wishes,

and share with readers some of my experiences from my visit to family and friends in Ghana, my home country. First, I did not realise how British I had become after living in this country for about 15 years till I was hit by the hot and humid weather in Ghana. I was always trying to hydrate myself to stay cool. However, I did enjoy visiting my parents and other relations. Another point is that I had lots of culture shocks to deal with in the short time that I was there. One was the fact that I did not see anyone throwing rubbish on the streets. I remember that throwing rubbish on the streets was one of the issues the government of Ghana was dealing with before I landed in England about 15 years ago. I was even more surprised to hear that the law enforcement agencies could dish out instant and hefty ȴ QHV Ȋ7KHVH ȴ QHV FRXOG EUHDN DQ DYHUDJH worker’s pocket, I was told. Kate Van Millingen For those of you who missed the evening of merry fundraising at Tickhill’s Methodist Church on 1st February with Barnsley’s writer and broadcaster Ian Macillan you have another chance, for Ian is playing at the end of March in Firbeck (see below) If your doctor has ordered a belly-full of mirth then go and enjoy yourself. Also I can recommend a trip to Hull. By the time you get there they might have finished digging up the City Centre which has been sprucing itself up for the visitors to the City-of-Culture 2017. In the main square is the largest single cast object in the history of man, a giant B75 wind-turbine blade made by Siemens, not a stones-throw from the spot where it lies… but not for too much longer, it leaves after 18 March – such a stunning object sited in the city centre. www.hull2017.co.uk/whatson/ events/blade/ Firbeck Village Hall Friday 31 March at 7.30pm. Ian Macmillan and Luke Carver Goss -‘ Words, Music, Glee and Delight’ 01709 819171 an evening of laughter and merriment Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery y open Wed to Sun Exhibition: until 26th March ‘A For Art’- An alphabetical trawl though the highlights of the Fine Art Collection held by Doncaster Museum Service, including some of the best loved paintings in the collection, seen alongside works which are usually kept in storage. Life drawing: 25 March 11-1pm and 2 4pm Art History Lecture: Friday 3rd March 10.30 am ‘Page to Painting’ to coincide with World Book Day will take a look at the world of book illustrations and images inspired by literary sources. £5 and Saturday 4th March a tour of the Art Gallery with ExhibitionOrganiser Neil McGregor looking at ‘Gems from the Doncaster Art Collection’- when I first saw this lecture title I wondered where they kept the jewellery collection, but then it dawned on me…. And there are some gemsof-paintings in the Art Gallery. It’s great to have a sympathic introduction to works of art, and I think this will be an eye-opener. I believe this one costs £2 / free to Friends of Doncaster Museum www.doncaster.gov. uk/museums Art at the Deli: in time for the Spring an exhibition which will take a very various look at ‘Flowers’ with lots of colour and wow 8

Community EVERTON SEEKS YOUTH WORKERS

Can you help us to provide a youth club for the young people of Everton? To be able to run this club we urgently need two youth workers, but recent adverts have failed to get any response. Everton Parish Council have agreed to sponsor a youth club to provide facilities for 10 to 19 year old residents of the parish. We are looking to engage a lead youth worker and assistant as part-time contract workers. The initial contract will be for a six week project, with an extension to at least the end of the current financial year if this proves successful. It is proposed that the Club will be based in the Village Hall on Thursday evenings from 6pm until 8pm (with the first 15 minutes as preparation time for the youth workers). The club will operate in school term time. We are looking for two enthusiastic individuals who are committed to helping with the development of young people. For the lead post significant experience of this type of youth work is required; for the assistant we require some experience of working with young people and a willingness to learn. These are supervised posts and professional advice/mentoring will be available. Remuneration will be ÂŁ9.50 per hour for the lead worker and ÂŁ8.50 for the assistant. Both will require DBS checks that will be paid for by the Council. If you are interested in either post and would like to discuss your qualifications, background and ideas for running our club please forward your CV with a covering letter to: Gillian Culverwell Clerk to Everton Parish Council 44 Ordsall Park, Retford Notts DN22 7PQ Or email to: theclerk@ evertonvillage.org.uk 12

Finding a forever home Mayflower Sanctuary Narrow Lane Bawtry Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, we have had a busy month rescuing abandoned dogs, it’s difficult to believe that some poor dogs are literally dumped out of cars and left at the side of the road .. That’s what happened to one very old little dog, it was all skin and bone and left to die in a layby. We have taken into our Sanctuary more abandoned dogs than usual since the Christmas period.

By Rachel Leverton

Spring has Sprung! The other day someone said to me, ‘You are so lucky…you have a beautiful garden.’ I thanked her of course, but I really wanted to say, ‘Luck has very little to do with it. A beautiful garden does not happen by pure chance. It takes a bit of work and planning.’ As the spring equinox looms, the trees blossom and daffodils bloom. The garden is waking up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. I am excited to be outside in it but I’m aware for non-gardeners it can seem daunting when everything (including the weeds) starts growing at once! So where to begin? There are three fairly simple tasks which will get you off to a À \LQJ VWDUW 3UXQLQJ LV WKH ¿ UVW WDVN ,W¶V WLPH WR KDUG SUXQH ODWH À RZHULQJ VKUXEV OLNH %XGGOHLD /H\FHVWHULD and Lavateria, but only if the risk of hard frost is SDVW 6SULQJ À RZHULQJ SODQWV VXFK DV )RUV\WKLD and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned LPPHGLDWHO\ WKH À RZHUV IDGH ,I \RX KDYHQ¶W already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MARCH 2017 Request from Councillor Steve Ashworth: All Saints Churchyard Dear Resident, Since learning last month that parts of the churchyard are in desperate need of a little T.L.C. I did a site visit to look at the problems; I found a large area that needs tidying up but nothing that a bit of brute force can’t remedy. We need some able-bodied local volunteers who care about the community and are willing to help sort out the problems the Parish Church Council are facing. What do you need, apart from a willing heart and a bit of muscle? It would be a real asset if you have any suitable tools that can be used – strimmers, loppers, pruners, bow saws, spades and wheelbarrows – any of these would be great. Health and Safety must be observed, so you will require gardening gloves and boots (better with toe caps) and possibly goggles. If this is something you feel you can help with, I would love to hear from you; the plan is to organise a working group ready for when the warmer weather comes‌so please, if you can help, or you know someone with time, tools or both, please get in touch with me; I will come back to you later with details of the arrangements. Refreshments will be provided! Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope some of you will be contacting me. Regards Councillor Steve Ashworth. Tel: 01302 745406 Comment from Harworth and Bircotes Town Council Harworth and Bircotes has three established places of worship, which are valued by the people who live here. The Town Council supports any community action that maintains our churches, which we view as important assets in our Town, regardless of religious denomination. All Saints is the oldest church and the one with a churchyard, and as such has strong links with our history; the intention to recruit a churchyard working group consisting of local people is, we think, highly commendable. Councils are not allowed to use public money to support a church, or indeed any organisation deemed to be part of the establishment, but I am pleased to report that a local resident has donated a sum of money to pay for 28 HARWORTH TODAY

skips and other expenses. All we need now are a few volunteers willing to give a few hours of their time. It’s over to you, folks! Councillor Brian Letherland Brian died on 2nd February following a 14-month battle with illness marked by frequent hospital admissions. He was an experienced councillor, a past Chairman, and a man of principle who gave his fellow councillors strong support in times of need. We have lost a true gentleman who will be sadly missed. WHERE TO VOTE, HOW TO VOTE: As you may know, A1 plan to demolish the Community Centre on Beverley Road and build on the site, which means an alternative polling station had to be found for local voters. Some months ago, I met with the Head of Electoral Services, and a nearby site for a temporary portacabin was found. Unfortunately, Bassetlaw Council KDV ZLWKGUDZQ WKLV RÎ? Letters have been sent to all persons who would normally use Beverley Road; included with the letters are postal vote application forms, which may, for some, be the ideal solution. Harworth and Bircotes Business Forum. A group of local business people supported by the Town Council and Bassetlaw District Council have come together to set up a business forum; it is about sharing ideas/opportunities and looking at ways the business community can become more involved

with community events etc. and set business priorities. It doesn’t matter if you are a sole trader or a multinational company based here (and there are a few), you are more than welcome to join – the more diverse the forum, the greater the opportunities. Do You Own Your Own Company? Want Some Free Publicity? The Town Council has compiled a local business database that is now on the Council website: www. harworthandbircotestowncouncil. org.uk. If you want more information about the business forum, or interested in having your business details on the Town Council website, please contact: ktarburton@ harworthandbircotestowncouncil. org.uk Marketing and Advertising Training. Bassetlaw District Council is holding a training session aimed at both new business start-ups and businesses wanting to improve their marketing and advertising skills. The training will take place in Harworth and Bircotes Town Hall, Scrooby Road on April 26th, 9.30 – 2.30. Book your place with Fiona. The dĂŠcor in Retford Town Hall is quite ‘grandiose’ and it speaks of past times – a grand staircase, wood panelling, huge chandeliers, and portraits of past kings, queens and local dignitaries stare down at you.
