Welcome to the

Made Your Will Yet?

November 2016 edition

“It is not happy people who are thankful, it is thankful people who are happy” I know that we don’t celebrate thanksgiving in the UK but this quote still seemed appropriate for our November introduction! Being grateful for what you have is such an easy way to be happy. You may not have as much as someone else (let’s face it, we can’t all be Kardashians — and honestly, would you really want to be?), but once you really look at the things in your life that you value; perhaps it’s your health, your family, your friends — you’ll realise that riches don’t always come in the form of money. By making a point of focussing on all the good already present in our lives we cultivate positivity and increase our happiness. This issue sees the start of some Christmas mentions. Where has 2016 gone? I can’t believe that Christmas is already on its way. Maybe it is an indication of my age that years some to fl y by so much quicker than they used to! The December issues will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th November. This is of course the Christmas issue and it is always a jam packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you do get your times to me in good time if you have something you would like included. Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Harworth Colliery Football Club November 2016! Hello and Welcome to the November update from the club and after missing last months edition we have quite a bit to update you all on. All our teams are now very much into their respective seasons and its been an Interesting start I must say. The 1st team at the time of writing are upto 3rd in the table and look very well positioned to have a real crack at promotion just like last season. After a disapointing result against promotion rivals Appleby Frodingham they have responded with three back to back league wins and with a good of fixtures it is hoped we can remain in the top four ready for a real push in the New Year. The lads also had a great day out at Barnton FC in the FA Vase a team a league above but gave a great account of themselves finally going out after extra time. The Reserves have had a very inconsistent start and although we have a large number of players signed on its been a struggle each week to get a team out. This will be addressed as it cannot continue, the team is a vital link between the 21’s and the 1sts but for whatever reason isn’t happening. We will be working hard to get players in who actually want to be a part of the club as I’m sure some lads don’t realise how lucky they are with the club they have and what people have done to give top notch facilities to play at. The under 21’s are in full swing and some of the teams in their league are the likes of Sheff United, Chesterfield FC and some of the best teams from the NCEL so it’s always going to be tough for the lads. We are the only team at Step 7 in the league and we started out against Chesterfield FC a profesional side and drew the game 1 all, actually having good oppurtunituies to win the game. That was followed up by a close game at Hallam losing 2-0 and then 6-2 degfeat to Dronfield. It’s all about development though and they will certainly learn by playing at good grounds against good players. The worry is the number not progressing through to the seniors, again one we must address as we have to for the club to remain moving forward.

winning all 4 of their first 4 league games, the squad is here pictured with Sponsor Neil Simm of Clay Lane Construction. Neil is a great supporter of the club and we truly appreciate the work he does on our behalf and a large part of how the ground looks now is down to him and Matty Roberts so we thank you. The Ladies play on a Sunday afternoon and would bee great to get more local support as they truly are a great addition to the club and sure will do us proud this year. The Juniors are also well under way into their campaigns, with having 6 teams now its difficult to go through all in detail but all are making great strides especially the Minis and the Under 13’s. The 15’s and 16’s have found things a little more difficult going into the premier leagues in both age groups but its where they need to be playing and will adjust quickly.

Pictured here are the Under 9’s with management Adam King and Shaun Kingston and Wayne Bailey of Bailey and Sons Exporters who has sponsored the Training Tops for all 8’s 9’s and 10’s so huge thanks to him on behalf of all the players and parents, the tops look great and what a great thing to donate and sponsor. As ever and we do ask every month anybody wanting to get involved with the club please do so, we have so many oppurtunities for people to get involved so don’t hesitate to do so.

It’s been all good for the newly formed ladies side, 10 HARWORTH TODAY

(Aiming to help you, to be in control of you Dementia Friends A big thank you to Judith Barton for attending The ‘Flu Clinic’ held on September 24th 2016 at The Tickhill Surgery and to those patients, who having spoken to her, signed up for the next Dementia Friends Sessions. These sessions aim to help us understand how dementia in its various forms affects people and how support can be given. Anyone else interested in attending a session should contact Judith on 01302 751276 or jmd.bart51@gmail.com Appointments not attended The Local Health Authority sends out appointments for babies to attend the practice for routine vaccinations. Last month in afternoon clinic sessions for these routine vaccinations, 13 appointments were not attended and not cancelled.

Equally important are minor surgery appointments, for which the waiting list is long. It is therefore important that patients should attend or let the surgery know they will not be attending such that someone else can benefit from that appointment. Zero Tolerance The Practice has asked us to inform patients that both surgery premises will now actively support the Government’s NHS ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY. Reminder If you have not yet received your vaccination against ‘flu’ please make an appointment if you qualify for the vaccine. The PPG (Patients Group) can be contacted via email at tickhillandcollieryppg@ yahoo.com or in writing via the comments box in either reception area. We look forward to hearing from you.

Where is Mrs TiggyWinkle? Hilary Cartmel As I am sure you are all aware, the hedgehog is on the decline. Hedgehogs are found across the UK, but not in the Scottish isles. But they are in decline, their population numbers have dipped by 30% in the last 10 years. This is only partly due to road-deaths, much of it is loss of habitat due to development and modern agricultural practice. At this time of year, they are packing up for the winter, and will be tucked up in a nice warm and dry spot for the long winter sleep. This is where you come in. Garden View

Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between n neighbours over this very issue down the yearss and the main cause of aggro seems to be the e humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy y fencing panels over the years, there really iss nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an n otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and d cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen n IRU IUXLW DQG ČľRZHUV IRRG Even the much maligned Leyland cypress hass D SDUW WR SOD\ ΖW FDQ SURYLGH D EULOOLDQW EXÎ?HUU DJDLQVW WUDÉ?F QRLVH IRU D VWDUW DQG ZLOO VFUHHQ unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife.

I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. p Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.
