Welcome to

Today

the OCTOBER 2014 edition

“The best thing about memories is making them” At the time of writing last month I was about to fly to the Greek island of Zante, for a holiday with not just my immediate family but also 10 other family members. A great time was had by all, my children spent lots of quality time with their cousins, with lots of beach, pool and splash park fun, sea swimming, turtle spotting, ice cream eating! We all made full use of the hotel’s entertainment programme with several T-shirts won in poolside quizzes and certificates for participation in all sorts of activities! My youngest Hannah, came so very close to achieving a Guinness World Record and Charlotte was invited to join the entertainment team on the stage and sing one evening. A great family holiday with many memories created. The school term is well under way and I am very pleased to report that so far 6th form and secondary are being enjoyed by my eldest and youngest children respectively – long may that last! Last month I forgot to note that the September issue was in fact the 100th issue of Rossington Today! Rossington Today was the 2nd magazine I launched back in 2006. Having failed to celebrate this landmark issue, I have now turned my attention to how to celebrate 10 years of Today Publications early next year. Ideas appreciated! The November issues will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th October.

Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Harworth Colliery Football Club August Update Hello and welcome to the update from the club and as ever we have been incredibly busy as all our teams including the two Junior sides are up and running and have made an excellent start. At the time of writing the Under 13’s have won both games and the Under 14’s have won one and drawn one so as previously mentioned we are lacking in number of teams but not in quality. The 1st team are starting to find their feet again after an inconsistent start but with players coming in and the young lads settling in we now have a very competitive squad so looking to kick on. The club are also delighted to name Lifting Support Services again as Official Kit sponsors for the 1st team this year their name proudly adorns a very impressive away kit so many thanks to Mark and Steve for their ongoing support to the club. The reserves and Colts are also under away and after a difficult pre season where we thought we would really struggle for players all three teams have a very encouraging number of players and its great to see a large number of these under 18. It is our job to ensure that we progress them in the right way, not rushing them and letting them blossom which we all want to see. One event we had last month was the Tom Brogan Memorial game in which we saw a legends team take on a mixed Colliery side. It was incredible to see nearly 30 former players turn up in Toms Memory and gave a great account of themselves. In fact at half time the score was 1 all but the old legs couldn’t cope for 90 with the young ones but it made for an excellent night where we all remembered the great work that Tom put in and was lovely his wife Sheila and family were present. On the Fundraising front, the Juniors will be in Asda (rescheduled from August) helping to bag pack on October 25th. So many thanks to them and Ann Delaney for allowing us to rearrange. So if you are in on that date please give genourosly. On the 1st of November we have organised a Halloween Fancy Dress Disco Party night in the Welfare Hall (See poster and Facebook page for Details) tickets are £3 and is a follow up to the hugely succesful 70’s/80’s night, these events are vital to the continuation of the club and hope all the village can get behind us for what im sure will be a great occasion again so dress not to Impress but to scare the pants off everyone! 4

TROUBLESOME TENDONS

There are many tendons in the body that are prone to becoming problematic – the Achilles in the ankle, the rotator cuff in the shoulder, the patella in the knee and the extensor tendon in the elbow to name but a few. Historically, it was thought that these problems were caused by inflammation and were thus labelled as tendon – itis (itis meaning inflammation) with subsequent treatment aimed at reducing inflammation with anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections. Treatment outcomes were somewhat inconsistent and rarely satisfactory.

One in three women is affected at some point by bladder, pelvic floor or prolapse symptoms. Often very distressing, these problems WILL NOT improve without action & can get worse as you get older.

Ask for Jenny Blizard or Kate Stower who are specialists in Women’s Health Physiotherapy including bladder / bowel problems, ante-natal and post natal care, sexual problems, pelvic & lower back pain

Recent medical advances mean we now know that the predominant factor in these problems tends to be degeneration of the tendon tissue (tendonosis) with inflammation only occasionally having a minor part to play. Commonly, these problems are now referred to as tendonopathies – a more general term meaning tendon dysfunction. Tendon degeneration occurs when the tendon is under excessive stress and strain which may be as a result of performing a new activity, increasing the frequency of a pre-existing activity or performing an activity during which the body is moving with altered biomechanics (e.g. the Achilles is under excessive strain in the foot with a fallen arch, the patella tendon is under altered load in someone walking or running with a stiff hip). As a result, the tendon becomes painful, thickened, tight, tender and weak. As Physiotherapists, we are in an ideal position to treat tendonopathies successfully. Movement patterns and biomechanics can be assessed and corrected to minimise ongoing strain on the tissue. Manual therapy techniques can reduce the thickening and tightness in the tendon whilst very specific training techniques help to strengthen the tendon tissue. Tendon problems can be stubborn problems but will get better with skilled and thoughtful treatment.

The Patient Participation Group of the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery

patients as they are multi-tasking, ensuring patients are booked in. If you are hearing or vision impaired please make the receptionist aware and you will then gain their full attention. Q Blood Tests We have employed an additional Phlebotomist to support the taking of bloods.

(Aiming to help you to be in control of your health and healthcare.) During the Tickhill Gala the PPG asked patients for comments about the Tickhill and Colliery Surgery Medical Practice. Here is the response we received from the practice. “The Practice Manager has responded and is only too willing to respond to any further queries you may have regarding improvements. Q. Working Patients We do have extended hours surgeries on a Saturday alternating between Tickhill & Colliery Surgeries. We also have a late night surgery at the Colliery Practice on alternative weeks, Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. We have and will continue to maximise patient reviews for patients to minimise time off from work. Where possible telephone consultations will take place for medication reviews for those working, if there is no need to attend surgery. Q Teenage Patients School Nurse is sometimes the best point of contact as are drop in centres at some schools. We also recognise that not all teenagers are in Education or Training. Sit and wait surgeries are available to be seen on a first come first served basis though in exceptional circumstances an appointment may be made. Q Very Ill and Infirm We have recently been commissioned to do work with our most vulnerable patients, working with them and their carer network to ensure that these patients can access clinical support needed on the same day. Q Receptionists Our receptionists are very hard working, understanding and empathetic. They are trained to ensure that each call is signposted to the appropriate clinician and will make decisions based on the information given to them by patients. What a patient thinks is an emergency very rarely is, our receptionists try to accommodate all patient requests for a same day consultation. Patients who make an appointment on the same day and fail to turn up are wasting not only surgery time but impact on the number of patients who can be seen in a day. If asked by the GP to make an appointment with a nurse, within a week, it would make better sense to make the appointment whilst still in the surgery building explaining reasons for so doing. Receptionists may not make eye contact with 12

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

Blood tests for analysis are not carried out on site and sometimes we do not get the results before 11am. As a practice we may look at utilising mobile technology to inform patients of blood results. Q Extra sessions The Surgery is governed by British Medical Council guidelines with the number of Doctors employed dictated by the number of patients on their register. The idea of extra sessions would have to be funded not out of the public purse but privately. As a practice if we were allowed to fine patients who did not attend their appointments this would pay for an additional 6 sessions per week or in other words another GP. Q Telephone Message Our telephone system is set up, like any other organisation of our size to ensure you get through to the correct department. We cannot make this message any shorter than it already is. The Practice will look at redirecting calls to the other surgery when one is closed for half day. Our Practice Leaflet has all our business hours on it as has our website, a quick check would ensure that you did not waste time in calling the surgery when it is closed. The PPG thanks the Practice Manager for the above response and will continue to pass on questions and comments received. We acknowledge the number of patients who pass on positive comments and praise for the staff at The Practice. We pass them all to the practice. For those Patients who asked about how to get specific information re their blood tests the Practice response is that patients can ask for a print out of their results for collection from reception. We could assist The Practice in contacting us by ensuring we give them up to date details of Address, Landline and Mobile numbers. This can be done online or in person.

Welcome On behalf of all patients The PPG warmly welcomes Dr J Collins who joins the medical practice as a partner. Many of our patients will have met Dr Collins whilst she has been working as a registrar at the Practice for the last year. REMINDER The PPG AGM is on Wednesday October 15th 2014 at The Parish Rooms Tickhill. You can contact the PPG via the comments boxes in both surgeries or at tickhillandcollieryppg@yahoo.com Jan Hart (Secretary) T

Dear Friends, This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the start of the First World War. My heart goes out to those who sacrificed their lives to make us safe. As we continue to honour and remember their heroisms, I wonder if the generations that have come after them have learnt their lessons. As at the time of writing this piece, I was trying to count the wars that are currently being fought in parts of the world – Libya, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Ukraine, and so on. I also find it difficult to recount the violence that is spotted all over the five or six continents in this world. As a Christian, one of the things that have become the basis of my reflections is the assurance that the Lord Jesus gives us peace. After Jesus had risen from the dead, he appeared to his disciples in the locked upper room, and breathed his peace unto them. After engaging with them for a while, he said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven...” (John 20: 21-23) (New International Version (NIV)). I imagine that if each of us were willing to pursue peace and forgiveness these wars and violent skirmishes that are now frequent in almost every continent would not be in place. I want to draw your attention to the fact that the Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Colossae, reminded them to ‘let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace’ (Colossians 3: 15) (NIV). Being called to peace is a responsibility. I don’t suppose that each of us need to be members of unions or the United Nation’s committees or become politicians in order to be agents of peace. I remember having a conversation with a friend who was blaming one faction for starting a war and justifying the other faction’s response. My reaction was, ‘wait till the missile falls in your bedroom or hall before you consider who to blame’. Let’s remind ourselves that there are no winners in a war, 14

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

however justifiable we may think it is. May I suggest that we become agents of peace by expressing our non-violent feelings, opinions, and actions that can go a long way to help the victims of war. One of the ways is to continue to remind the politicians of the need to act in ways of bringing peace to the world. I wonder if you have also considered giving to the charities that are working around the clock in dangerous situations to help overcome the human sufferings in these war-torn areas. What about writing a note to one of the perpetrators if you are in a position of influence. As you celebrate harvest and remember the heroes of wars this autumn, my prayer is that ‘the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 4:7) (NIV). I wonder if I can conclude with a quote from Jesus of Nazareth, which says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”.(Matthew 5:9) (NIV) God bless you. Scoot Safely I am one of many mobility scooter drivers in South Yorkshire. A friend of mine who is an Officer in the Doncaster 50Plus was recently severely injured by a Scooter like mine. She is listed as one of the statistics below. We have persuaded the South Yorkshire Partnership and Parkgate Mobility to put on their excellent two hour course which has the support of the Police, in Rossington at the Holmescarr Community Centre on Friday 21st November 2014 beginning at 1pm. The course is free of charge. Scooters are being provided for Participants by Parkgate Mobility. There has been a lot of adverse publicity aimed at poor scooter drivers. This course will encourage drivers to drive with more consideration for pedestrians and other road users; the Law and third party insurance will be explained. We will be told what type and size can be accommodated on trains, buses and coaches Over the last seven years, in South Yorkshire, there have been six fatal accidents and 57 serious / life changing accidents involving scooters and powered wheelchairs. DON’T MAKE THESE STATISTICS. WORSE! The course is free for people of any age. DO NOT bring your own scooter or wheelchair. They will be provided. There is time for your group to organise transport to get you to the Holmescarr Community Centre in Grange Lane Rossington DN11 0LP and back. If you have difficulties, please let us know at the contact points below. There are, at present, no plans to put on this course elsewhere in Doncaster so please think positively about getting your group lined up to join on this experiment of trying to get Doncastrians to one place to share in tackling a common interest.

Tickhill & District Lions Club We have been busy as usual over the last few weeks with amongst other things the excellent Lions Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled being held at Sandal Park, Doncaster which was as usual well supported and attended with 26 Lions Clubs facilitating the days activities. More recently we were in place with a BBQ at the Tickhill Velo another tremendous local event and your local Lions provided a £500 donation for presentation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance a most worthy cause that has assisted many people and requires massive funding to continue it's work. We continue to put the monies raised from you and your generous neighbours to good use locally too but at times we must keep detail discreet for the privacy of those we help but be assured our welfare committee works tirelessly to ensure funds are spent appropriately. It seems autumn is upon us and for your local Lions that can only mean one thing, Bonfire Night won't be too far away! This year we are pleased to announce that once again the event will take place in the grounds of the Tickhill Cricket Club and it is to be staged on Saturday 8th November so book us into your diary for what I'm sure will be a spectacular family orientated evening. details will follow in the next issue but I'm getting excited already..... Can I leave you this month with a gentle friendly reminder. My elderly Mum who lives alone reminded me that during the summer she spends time outside chatting to her neighbours in the garden but soon however the nights will draw in and the weather become colder (and wetter) and she will see people less and less as she stays in where it's warm. Please give a thought for those less mobile and more elderly residents of your lovely village. We all lead such busy lives but it only takes a minute to pick up the phone or drop in on someone you haven't heard from for a while. The Lions motto is 'We Serve' and we endeavour to do so where we can but you can help too by being that good neighbour.

Theft of Child Safety Bollards Working in partnership with the Helping Hands project the All Saints Church of England School on Scrooby Road with the approval of County Council have installed 4 child Road safety bollards outside the school to assist in managing road safety, in particular speeding vehicles outside the school. Unfortunately when these bollards were installed and whilst the cement was being set over the school holiday one of these bollards has been stolen. If anybody has any information of the whereabouts of the missing bollard please contact Notts police on 101 or the beat team contact numbers, or if they wish to remain anonymous you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Notts Police working with partners over Tenancy Issues Nottinghamshire Neighbourhood policing Team are continuing to work with partner agencies in relation to tenancy issues in the area and identify where there is evidence and a legal obligation to take action against problem tenants. A recent example of this was on Rayton Court Harworth which resulted in the occupant being evicted from the premises by New Roots with the assistance of the Neighbourhood Policing Team, after receiving numerous complaints of Anti Social behaviour and tenancy issues at the premises. 22

Vehicle Crime We continue to strongly urge people to ensure that they lock their vehicles and do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be Sat Navs, small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is that Insurance companies tend not to pay out if you leave your vehicle insecure and it gets broken into or stolen, so please double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked.

Burglaries and Shed Breaks in the Area We continue to advise people to be vigilant and check that they have adequate locks on all windows and doors. Also, check that security lights where fitted are operational. If you are due to be going away on holiday ask neighbours, family or friends to keep checking on your property and to report anything that seems suspicious to the Police. Also ensure that you check that all windows, doors and outbuildings are closed and locked securely prior leaving your property.

HARWORTH & BIRCOTES TODAY

We strongly advise that people ensure that all lawnmowers and other garden equipment are all stored securely inside your sheds and garages. Also ensuring that a good heavy duty lock and shed alarm are fitted to try and prevent the contents from being stolen. We are still offering property marking by using Cre Mark where we will come out and visibly mark property to also help deter thieves. If you would like more information on this or to arrange for one of the local PCSO’s to call round to mark your property please make contact with them on their numbers shown below.

Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - OCTOBER 2014 Change Is In The Air …. So much seems to be happening in our Town, there is a real buzz locally, and it feels a bit manic on Scrooby Road. • Jones Homes - I notice supplies of bricks – previously in short supply - have now appeared on site, along with a sign recruiting bricklayers. I have also learned one new street will be called Hesley Road. • Four Resin Models of Children placed on the pavement leading up to the C of E School are highly noticeable to drivers; pity that after just two days one disappeared overnight – why do such a stupid thing? • Traffic Lights from the Aldi site to Galway Mews were needed to establish a sewer connection under the road, and from the 18th Sept. the lights were needed for another week whilst new water connections were installed • Land at the Front of Galway Mews is being developed by Westdales. The managing director tells me that seven units will be built which will be sympathetic to the current homes, there will be a mixture of houses and bungalows, and no house will be taller than any other houses already there. At last the good people of Galway Mews will be rid of an eyesore that has been there far too long.

called out Kevin Greaves, a County Councillor with responsibility for Transport. I pointed out the dangerous zebra crossing (we need lights), people using the roundabout as a crossing point and how motorists drive up and across the roundabout without realising traffic from their right has moved onto the roundabout it needs to be more prominent. Result: Kevin and senior Highways officers have confirmed that they will shortly be visiting to re-think the problems I have pointed out. • At the other end of Scrooby Road, I understand the land next to The Bryndale has been sold and plans submitted for a single dwelling to be built - what a view they will have, looking down Wright’s Hill and across north Nottinghamshire. Highways Tell Me East and West Street will be closed from 29th September to 3rd October so that the roads can be resurfaced. This was going to happen earlier in the year, but the job was cancelled at the last minute… let’s hope this time it goes ahead as planned … And talking of roads, which do you think are the worst in our Town? Ask the residents of the Mayfair Estate what they think! Police Accommodation The extension to our Community Information System is now complete and the Police will be moving shortly into their new accommodation. Thank you to everyone for your understanding and patience regarding the

temporary loss of car park spaces. Repairs to Car Park. Now that we have returned to normality, we can go ahead with this job. Airey Houses. The two houses at the top of Smith Square have been demolished and the field behind is now established with a site compound. A1 and the builders met residents on 10th September to keep them informed of what will be happening. I reported a street light that had been moved to allow the demolition work but had not been re-connected. A1 have confirmed with E-on that the light will be connected in three weeks. The Big Tidy Up Keep Britain Tidy is proposing an ‘Autumn Clean Up’ throughout October, before winter arrives, and will provide equipment to local groups/communities willing to participate. Check out the details at www.thebigtidyup.org to find out more. Bassetlaw will remove all rubbish, just tell them where it needs collecting from:- contact Jeannette. walker@bassetlaw.gov.uk Seats and Bus Stops I was asked about providing a seat at a bus stop on Bawtry Road – a simple enough request, you may think. However, checking with residents living in houses immediately behind that bus stop, the response was “please, don’t”. These residents suffer enough from litter,

• Traffic Management. August saw a visit from a Notts. County public realm designer, along with a couple of planners from Bassetlaw. As we walked along the shop fronts we witnessed a red van reverse onto the Health Centre roundabout and then slam on his brakes, just missing another oncoming vehicle. He then drove n Notts County Council 08449 808080 further up Scrooby Road, again parked on the pavement to eat n Bassetlaw District Council 01909 533533 his sandwich, and eventually departed with his mobile phone n A1 Housing 0800 590542 clamped against his ear. usually dropped by children leaving the local store; they are concerned that a seat would attract teenagers in the evening. One family has a son with special needs, and they don’t need shouts and screams disturbing his routine. A special Thank You goes to Mr Riley, a retired gentleman who daily cleans up the litter left by a group of girls who gather at night around the empty building on Bawtry Road near the Devonshire Road Centre. Come on, girls, just put your rubbish in the bin nearby. To Make You Smile Speaking to an officer at Bassetlaw, my enquiry revealed that there is no ‘proper’ name for the road leading to the cemetery; it is referred to as Access Road to Harworth Cemetery. It was then explained to me that the process to get a name requires three suggestions from Council, each accompanied by a reason for the proposed new name. Jokingly, I said “such as Heavens Way?” “We cannot name streets after any person until they are deceased” said the officer. “I said Heavens Way, not Evans Way!” I replied
