In the month of his birthday I thought a Dr Seuss quote would be appropriate! World Book Day takes place on Friday 7th March – the date is linked to Dr Seuss’s birthday on 2nd March, and in the UK we use the closest Friday – I bet you didn’t know that!

Over recent weeks I have been lucky enough to participate in 2 very different personal development courses – but both of them looking at mind set. Why we still do certain things even though we know they aren’t in our best interests and learning how to overcome barriers that stand in our way of making changes. The quote above was mentioned at one of the courses and touched a nerve with many in the room – particularly those with children. “But everyone else has one Mum” – sound familiar? Our society seems to be all about fitting in, conforming to norms, when in reality we are all individuals, and sometimes thinking outside the box and stepping away from the accepted norms and not accepting ‘but we have always done it this way’ can reap rewards. The April issues will be delivered to you late March. If you would like to have something included in this, then please make sure details are with me by Friday 14th March. Also prior warning, that due to badly timed Easter holidays the deadline for the May issues will be very early – Friday 4th April.
Enjoy March and I will back in a months’ time with your April magazine! T

Neighbourhood Plan Update The Harworth and Bircotes Neighbourhood Plan group have been working tirelessly on producing the Draft Plan and we are nearly there! We just need a little bit of help from local residents. Contained within this issue of Harworth & Bircotes Today is an Affordable Housing Questionnaire. Please take the time to fill out the questionnaire. This questionnaire contains vital information about the type of housing local residents may wish to see built in Harworth and Bircotes over the next 14 years and whether local residents want to see more affordable properties built for rent or sale. None of the information you provided will be shared with the Town Council or other third parties, this information will be kept private and confidential, only the consultants undertaking the study will see the information you put in your response. In anticipation of you filling out your Affordable Housing Questionnaire the Town Council would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking part in making Harworth and Bircotes a better place for existing and future residents.
If you would like any further information about the Affordable Housing Questionnaire or the neighbourhood plan please contact the Town Council on 01302 752642. Spare copies of
Blameless Dear Friends, I was having a discussion with a friend the other day regarding the fact that our generation seems to complain about everything. Interestingly, we agreed that moaning does not make us ‘blameless’. The Apostle Paul challenges his readers in the book of Philippians to have a positive attitude (Philippians 2: 1-18). He uses the word ‘blameless’, which is the source of the word ‘sincere’. The literal meaning of ‘blameless’ is ‘without wax’. There is the story in Roman history of cowboy stone carvers and builders repairing damages and holes in stones with waxes that had the same colours as the stones. These waxes did not last

the questionnaire can also be collected from the Town Hall or the Information Centre should yours be missing or more than one member of your household wish to complete one. T long but the cowboy builders may have moved on. On the other hand, genuine craftsmen advertised their skills by putting the words ‘without wax’ on their signboards. In other words, they were sincere or honest. Lent is the season when most of us try to be ‘without wax’ with ourselves and in our relationships. God also wants us to be sincere in all that we say and do, not only in lent. He expects us to be good examples of honesty and effort in a world that is full of shams. It may be difficult in being blameless but he gives us the opportunity to ask him to help us in our lives. It’s okay to ask from him since he knows that we are fallible beings. I wonder if I can challenge you to consider being consistent in your dependence on God as you pray frequently and read his word during this season of lent. You may consider asking friends, neighbours or the church to assist you. Remember that when it comes to issues of being honest, you are not alone. Being honest with yourself will also encourage others to be honest with you. My prayer is that each of us will strive to be people ‘without wax’ as we celebrate lent this month.
May God bless you. Frank - Rossington Methodist Church. T

No-one Likes a Soggy Bottom!
It’s a phrase normally associated with BBC2’s Great British Bake Off, but it’s not just cooks who go to great lengths to ensure their produce (pastry in this case) doesn’t end up with a soggy bottom, it affects gardeners too! I’m not talking about sitting on wet grass, or toppling over in the veg plot after too much potting-shed homebrew, but about the poor plants we expect to grow in badlydrained soil. Out in the wild, a plant’s survival depends on whether its seeds blow into a dry rock face or a sticky clay soil puddle, and that’s fine because one will die while the other thrives. But it’s very different in the domestic garden, where overenthusiastic humans buy anything that looks pretty, dig a hole and expect it to bloom. The right plant for the right soil is as important, if not more so than its tolerance to sun or shade. Studies show that plants cannot survive for more than just a few days if left in standing water. It’s a little known fact that roots need air too … well, most plants that is. You see there’s a clever lot who have adapted over the years to thrive in such conditions and they’re commonly known as bog plants. I understand it’s not the most glamorous name, unlike 18 18
their closely-related cousins such as water lilies, which are known as hydrophytes. Plants that thrive in heavy, wet clay soils, which are damp but not permanently waterlogged, include the beautiful bold leaves of the Hosta, the feathery plumes and delectably dissected foliage of the Astilbe, and any of the Primulas, which are ideal for low-growing spring colour. For fern lovers, Osmunda regalis is a favourite or for a splash of summer colour in full sun try Lobelia cardinalis. If you have a larger garden and need to fill areas of damp soil, try the herbaceous Rodgersia which look great planted in drifts, and if you have a really large area why not try the prickly rhubarb-like Gunnera manicata: children will love standing under the giant leaves of its huge green umbrella! If you don’t have a boggy area, but would like to try growing some of these plants for yourself, why not create one? If you dig out a ‘mini pond’ and then add an old liner or plastic sheet, pierce it several times with a fork and then add the soil back in, you can plant a selection of the plants above. You’ll need to make sure it doesn’t dry out in

the summer, so a shady location usually works best, and if you’ve only got a teeny garden, try the fly-eating pitcher plants Sarracenia. They will provide a talking point. Until next month, enjoy your garden
Until next time, happy gardening ,

We have seen a significant increase in the thefts from vehicles in particularly in the Harworth area. We would strongly urge people to ensure that they do not leave anything on show inside their vehicles whether it be for Sat Navs, small change etc as this may entice thieves to try to break in. Another point we need to make is would you please ensure that you ALWAYS lock your vehicles and double check if necessary as evidence has shown an offender trying door handles to vehicles to check whether they are locked. Burglaries and Shed Breaks
Over the last month there has been an increase in burglary dwellings in the area along with shed breaks if anyone requires security advice please contact your local PCSO as we do have leaflets we can supply which contain information on security. As usual we are asking people to secure belongings which are stored inside sheds as much as possible and also to have a good quality padlock fitted. To further enhance security we would ask people to consider security lighting close to their sheds in particular the door area. Also to ensure that nothing is visible from outside for example if you have a shed with a window maybe think about putting a curtain or sheet up that will cover this so the contents are not on display. Shed alarms are also something to consider and if you require any further information please make contact with your local PCSO. T
Quad Bikes in the area
There have been a number of incidents in recent months where quad bikes have been used in and around the area. In response to this plans are being put in place to trace the drivers and owners of these vehicles. If anyone has any information as to where the

Crime Activity in the area All crime in Harworth and Bircotes is currently (as of 8th Jan 2014) showing a reduction of 12.9% against the same period (1st April to 7th Jan) in 2012/13 compared with 2013/14. Despite this positive trend, Nottinghamshire Police continue to run extra patrols in order to
apprehend any one committing crime within the area. This continues to be successful and has already seen a reduction in Burglary and vehicle crime oences in the Town. Notts Police will continue with these patrols over the coming months. T

the north of the county focusing on Beat area problems. This could be high volume of crime, Anti social behaviour issues, arrest or search warrants etc. The unfortunate side of this is that as from the beginning of February 2014 I am no longer a Beat Manager for the Harworth and Bircotes area but this new team is a 3 month attachment so after this time I will hopefully be returning to Harworth and Bircotes. Harworth & Bircotes Town Council - MARCH 2014 Local Authority Mortgage Scheme You may remember Bassetlaw introduced this scheme last year; it has now been expanded by a partnership agreement between Bassetlaw District Council, Notts. County Council and the Mansfield Building Society. The scheme is intended to help local people get onto the housing ladder, and is specifically for those first time buyers who can afford mortgage repayments, but who do not have a large deposit. The scheme allows a 95% mortgage but on similar terms as a 75% mortgage. If you want to know more, ring any Nottinghamshire branch of the Mansfield Building Society.
Bingo or Blood Transfusion Service When I and my mum, with Council permission, started the Thursday bingo session at the Town Hall in 2011, I never imagined it would lead to controversy. The Blood Transfusion Service had earlier that year gained Council approval to hold blood donor sessions at the Hall; this was followed by a careful inspection of the premises and agreement that the main Hall provided the necessary space required to fulfil their patient health and safety standards. Their ‘care’ relates not only to those lying on a couch and giving blood, but to all those sitting on rows of chairs, waiting for their turn. So space/ access to all donors is key. So what is the problem? Two of the 24 24
four annual blood donor sessions fall on a Thursday afternoon, coinciding with the bingo session; this means that twice a year the bingo has to be cancelled, and also on the occasion of the Christmas Lighting Event (attended by Santa!). Thursday 6th February saw a display of temper and bad manners from one individual who insisted these bingo sessions should not be cancelled; he even got the bingo players to vote for this. Our staff are not employed to be shouted at; doing this in front of an audience is even worse.
someone who has had a blood transfusion, possibly to save a life. Q. Is the Town Council going to cancel these blood transfusion sessions for two games of bingo, along with the Christmas Lighting event? A. Not on your life – and I mean that, literally.
The Facts • Anyone booking the Hall is told about the Blood Transfusion sessions; no other group affected has complained • There is no written contract for the bingo session; it is a Council initiative, run by a committee • People travel from miles around to give blood; around 300 pints per session are collected. • Council recognises the value of the Blood Transfusion Service and consider it their public duty to facilitate donor sessions. Ironically, I bet some of those people playing bingo have had surgery for new hips or knees, but don’t realise that major surgery is never undertaken without blood at the ready, should it be needed; I also bet they all know
A Police Presence A shopkeeper was horrified to see a man who, leaving a black car parked near the Fire Station, drop a used needle onto the raised planted area as he walked past. Concerned that a child might pick it up, a member of staff from the shop picked it up and disposed of it safely. All it takes is a needle stick injury, and a child could have Hepatitis C for life.

community community Trying to contact a local Community Beat Policeman can prove frustrating, I found, especially when they are suddenly moved elsewhere because a couple of pubs in Bassetlaw are licenced to stay open until 5am and trouble is anticipated. What about our problems? -we need a Police presence on our streets …. I have raised this with the relevant people, though I know senior officers are struggling with huge budget cuts.
used nappies, but on this occasion one item did amuse the workmen ….what was it? To avoid causing offence I cannot be specific, but I believe the best term is ‘an adult toy’ – how embarrassing! A woman driving along Scrooby Road threw her cigarette butt out of her window… unfortunately for her, this was witnessed by the driver in the car behind her, along with his passenger. She, too, has been sent a Fixed Penalty Notice to her address in Langold. Who was the conscientious driver behind her? None other than our own Town Clerk. A gentleman who owns a house in Bircotes that is currently empty got an unpleasant shock when he discovered that a big pile of household rubbish – certainly more than one full wheelie bin- had been tipped onto his drive. This just a few weeks after someone had stolen his gates.
What a Load of Rubbish! One offence –which does not fall within the remit of the Police Force but is dealt with by Environmental Services – is fly tipping, and this seems to be on the increase locally, as the following examples show:-
We contacted Environmental Services, photographs were taken, and examination of the rubbish led to the identity of the culprit. Action will be taken against this individual, who is a ‘persistent offender’. A favourite dumping site for those without a conscience is Carr Lane/Carr Wood. Recently discovered there was a speed boat – yes, you read it correctly.
We recently issued a Fixed Penalty Notice to a woman living in Harworth for fly tipping. In effect, this is a £80 fine; if unpaid, we take that person to court.
Environmental Services tell me another favourite dumping site is Snape Wood. Probation Services have recently cleared the wood and dug ditches to hamper access; covert cameras are now in place.
It always amazes me what items some people dump; apart from mattresses, white electrical goods, broken furniture and unwanted toys, there is the usual everyday rubbish that could and should be placed in household rubbish bins.
I get incensed by fly tipping; I wonder what kind of people do this, expecting someone else to pick up their rubbish, and at a cost to me and you; I certainly know what I think of them.
This is not a pleasant task for those clearing such rubbish, especially plastic bags full of dog waste or
¬Warning: if you ask and pay someone to dispose of your rubbish, and that rubbish is then dumped illegally, you could also

be held responsible. You are being ripped off as well as the rest of us, so please be careful, find someone you can trust.
A Good Citizen Thanks go to the gentleman living on the Plumtree Caravan Park who, noticing all the paper and plastic bags lodged against the railings on the field opposite Thoresby Close, decided to do something about this mess caused by the high winds. He collected three bags of rubbish, found the Community Wardens who work for A1, and duly handed over the litter he had collected. Thank you, sir.
Fracking for Shale Gas Council knows that the current target area is to the east of Harworth and Bircotes, ending at Scaftworth. Council has received/discussed information about possible future sites for exploratory drilling; we are on that list -however, we have no information on the ‘if and when’ fracking might affect this community, apart from the fact that several years will pass before we know for sure. We understand people are concerned about fracking – there is much to consider/find out about and I am one of those yet to be convinced. I have discussed my concerns with the Leader of the District Council and he is arranging to meet with the company involved – hopefully this will clarify matters and avoid

community any premature knee-jerk reaction. In the meantime, we are liaising with other local councils, and keeping a watching brief. Any hard information/real facts will be passed on to you as we get it.

To Make You Smile Years ago I was in court because a mother was accused of child neglect – a very serious charge. The truth was that this struggling single mother cared for her children but left them alone at night whilst earning extra money as ‘a lady of the night’. The prosecuting lawyer, pointing his finger at her, described her as nothing better than a common prostitute, to which she responded by shouting ‘I am not a common prostitute, I am very choosy!’

Bassetlaw District Council is currently consulting on potential development sites around Harworth & Bircotes. These proposals are in addition to the development already permitted as part of redevelopment of land around the colliery, as part of the Council’s vision for wider regeneration of the town. Although a consultation event has already taken place at Harworth Town Hall, on 6 February, the consultation period runs until Monday 31 March and the Council is inviting you to submit comments on the consultation document. The Site Allocations Preferred Options paper can be viewed at: http://www. bassetlaw.gov.uk/planning_and_building/ planning_policy/local_development_ framework/site_allocations/preferred_ options_consultation.aspx If you have any questions relating to the plans, please feel free to contact members of the Council’s Planning Policy Team on 01909 535150, or drop in to the offices at Queen’s Buildings in Worksop.
