welcome to the APRIL 2013 edition of Harworth & Bircotes Today. “spring is the time of plans and projects.” ~ Leo Tolstoy, Anna Karenina

A ‘Spring’ quote seemed appropriate this month, although at the time of writing the weather is anything but Spring like! Spring is a time of new life and new beginnings and a time when many of us look at home improvements, or make a start on garden projects. This month’s magazine is full or businesses and tradespeople who can help you with these projects. Whether it be a building project, a patio, new carpets, a greener lawn or a clean oven, whatever your springtime project there is sure to be someone featured who can help you. Don’t forget to tell them you found them in Today Publications when you contact them!

The next issue will be delivered from 27th April. This issue will include a ‘Good Food & Drink section’ Anything that you would like to be included must be with me by Friday 12th April.

Best wishes, Paula x

New Healthier Fitter You Hi Folks! Last month i talked about taking control of your calorie intake and the importance of eating Breakfast! This month I am going to start by talking about Metabolism. You want your metabolic rate to be working with you, not against you. You ideally want your metabolic rate in the highest gear possible so it burns as much energy as possible meaning your body holds less body fat and burns through the body fat you already have. Let’s use an ideal scenario to give a clear picture. Once awake you should be having breakfast to kick start your metabolism and get your engine

going. You want a nice white hot furnace before you start your day. Once your day has begun you should be eating small and often. A small well balanced meal (not snack) every 3-4 hours will keep your metabolism white hot and enable your body to continue burning body fat. Without calories in your stomach you reduce your body’s ability to burn body fat stores. It’s a bit like you cannot burn a candle without oxygen, well your body NEEDS calories in order

to burn body fat. Hence if you miss bREAKFAST or LUNCH you are slowing down your metabolic rate and risk gaining weight when you snack or over consume later that day (and you will). Hopefully by now you are eating breakfast daily and making breakfast, lunch and your evening meal important parts of your daily routine. What about Exercise I hear you runners shout?! T

EXERCISE

The truth is you can control your weight without exercise, it is just so much easier with physical activity than without it. if you are eating the correct amount of calories in small, well balanced meals then great but if you are not and you are just missing meals in an attempt to lose weight then physical activity is KeY to drive your weight loss. When you undertake exercise of any form your body will recover afterwards and most importantly it compensates. 6

Harworth & Bircotes

Tenants & Residents Association

AT OUR LAST meeting we spent a lot of time discussing the problem of dog poo, fly tipping and vandalism to the children’s play areas. We are horrified by the number of dog owners in Harworth/bircotes who have still not got the message that it is simply unacceptable to allow your dog to foul a footpath, passageway, playing field, and then not pick up after it. The Town Council have spent good money supplying dog waste bins. These can be found in many places around our town, but if one is not to hand it is perfectly acceptable to put your bag in a normal waste bin as these are invariably lined with a bin liner. We now have more litter bins and dog bins than ever before, but incredibly we still see dog piles almost next to the bins. CHILDREN WOULD RATHER kick their football on the street than on the play areas provided and when asked why they tell us that the play areas are full of dog poo. Have we become so thoughtless that we cannot see the damage we can cause with our behaviour? Our children’s eyesight could be permanently damaged by the diseases spread by dog faeces on our children’s playgrounds.

PLEASE THINK ABOUT your actions. It is so easy to carry a small bag around with you. Simply put your hand into the bag, pick up the dog pile and draw your hand through, knotting the bag before placing in a bin. It is better than being fined for not picking up your dog’s mess. The dog can’t reach the bin – but you can! AS FOR THE Fly tipping, bDC, A1 Housing and the H&b Town Council spend an awful lot of money cleaning the mess left by a few thoughtless people. What kind of example are we setting the younger generation? It is not them causing the problem. If you have missed the bin men then telephone the council and tell them. They can put you in touch with the relevant service. If you have rubbish that is to big to put into your bin bDC, A1 Housing and H&b Town Council run a collection service. A1 and bDC make a charge of £5.40 per item, and their phone numbers can be found in the Harworth and bircotes Today Magazine. IT WAS VERY upsetting to learn that the children’s play areas on the Tommy Simpson field has been severely vandalised and most of what was left had to be removed

and the rest made safe thus leaving the children with nowhere to play. Again this is costing money and we all know the money is in short supply and budgets are being cut. It is your council tax that is paying for all this - think about it!

If people are caught fly tipping or leaving dog mess they will be fined. THE MEETING ON TUESDAY 2ND APRIL WILL bE THE AGM , starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make new friends and learn some new facts in the process. Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take place. We would particularly welcome anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. – So please come and join us. community Hello everyone, how good does it feel to see the sunshine that we are experiencing at the moment. At least some of our more robust dogs can go into their runs without getting muffled up in dog coats. some of the little ones still need to be kept warm though so we do make sure we have plenty of warm coats for them during the day. We were lucky enough to be invited to join a Charity event at Hodsock Priory in February. Our Tombola was very well received and we met some lovely people. Thank you everyone for coming to say hello and helping to raise money to keep our dogs and cats well fed and cared for. We were also invited to Direct Line in Doncaster, they very kindly held a charity day for us. They baked cakes and hosted various activities to raise money for our charity. We also took 2 of our resident dogs with us and they were thoroughly spoilt. A big thank you, everyone had a great time and it was refreshing to see a company that

10 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

gave people time out to help the animal world. Would anyone be interested in walking to keep fit? It’s always easier if you have a dog to walk. We desperately need dog walkers to keep our dogs happy and not kept in their runs all day where they get very bored, even though their carers spend as much time as they can with them to stimulate and train basic commands, they still need a jolly good walk. During the morning would be best (9-1) while their kennels are being cleaned. If we could get a number of people to walk our dogs it would also be an ideal opportunity to make friends. Don’t forget to put in your diaries our next fundraising event the 8th June at Ye Old belle, barnby Moor, Nr Retford. Wild West night (cowboys and Indians). There will be an auction and raffle, live band, disco, prize for best dressed and the ticket price includes supper. Tickets are £20 please call 01302 711330 or 07969 203206 for tickets. This is proving to be a popular night so call soon to avoid disappointment. Lastly a big thank you for everyone that has helped us at the Sanctuary since Christmas, there are some very

generous people out there and our Sanctuary could not survive without the general publics help. One company that has been incredibly generous and caring over the last couple have months is b W Flooring Services Ltd, there director barry has helped us re floor some of our kennels and puppy block. So a big thank you we are very grateful. Please call us if you are considering adopting a cat or dog we will be happy to help and point you in the right direction.

Garden View

CAN YOU DIG IT? soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it? One of the most common ‘moans’ I get from gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’ll presume they mean it’s not great quality (and not that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite sure what people expect from their soil. Probably a soft, stone free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organic compost such as that found in a grow bag. The reality is that soil, like man, is never perfect. Sometimes too wet, too squidgy, too crumbly, or too firm, and, just like humans, the perfect soil takes hard work to maintain. Now I realise that some people were just born perfect, just as some loamy soils are too. but if you’re not one of the lucky ones, and your soil is more arm pit than brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it. Like all things in life, there are extremes. I (being a horticultural extremist) had to go the whole hog and excavate the clay from my borders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, but unless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d recommend working with what you already have. I’ve only 12 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

ever come across one soil type which I didn’t think possible to improve due to its shallow nature, so we just added soil on top to make it deeper. Whether you have easy-to-dig sandy soil or moisture retentive clay, the addition of a few ingredients will help create a beautiful growing medium. If you are a novice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and lots of it. For those with clay soil, and more stamina, add horticultural grit to the soil and dig in well, then dig in manure and top off with a 5cm layer of manure to act as mulch. And for those who really can’t be bothered with digging, just add a layer of manure to the soil surface after feeding with a pelleted fertilizer. It’s not ideal, but the worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’s much better than nothing at all. You’ll also have more success in the future if you choose the right types of plants for your soil pH. Testing kits are available online and in garden centres. If you want to grow acid loving plants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try the addition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pine based composts, or planting in tubs

of ericaceous compost, but failing that, my advice is to move house! T

Until next time, happy gardening,

Lee...

New event in town

There is a new event in town! Triathlon. The Brownlee brothers have brought the sport to our attention with their Olympic and worldwide success, but Triathlon is fun and accessible for all levels, all abilities, all shapes and all sizes. The club was set up as part of last year’s Bassetlaw Games by sports development and supported by BPL Leisure, and has quickly grown in membership over the year. With a mix of seasoned athletes and those completely new to sport the club continues to support the local drive will be first timers or in their first year to see sporting activity be of triathlon. more widely accessed. The family friendly atmosphere At bassetlaw Triathlon club we want to help and encourage people to try tri, and entering our novice-friendly event on the 4th August is a great way to start! The event begins at Worksop Leisure Centre with a pool swim of 400m (16 lengths), swimmers of a similar ability in the water at the same time, moving on to a 21k bike ride and a 5k run. With a little training none of the distances should be too daunting and as a club we can support you with any training needs. There is very little equipment needed to participate in Triathlon; competitors can keep it as simple or go as high tech as they want. All you need is a swimming costume and goggles, a bicycle and helmet, a pair of trainers and some clothes you will be comfortable in. Timing is by electronic chip meaning that at the end of the race competitors can use an onsite kiosk to print out their time including the breakdown of each individual section. because of the growing nature of our sport, at least half the entrants 16 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

community During March we witnessed a good range of fantastic nights out in the company of talented musicians, playing to small audiences in small venues for very small entrance fees. Tickhill Music society’s concert was a joy, with four young musicians- the Castalian Quartet who played work by 3 composers, one of which was Beethoven, a four movement piece was written for a small circle of connoisseurs and was never to be performed in public – just as well he didn’t bin this stunning work which was so modern in structure and sound – its hard to believe that it was written 203 years ago. I caught the Christopher P Wood’s painting exhibition in Leeds. The show was a joy or colour and fantastical landscape. It is travelling to the Djanogly Gallery in Nottingham in July. Highly recommended. The Ukaranian Club in Doncaster have had more fun and varied gigs and for very little money – highlights were Karl Toth whose set began with Superstitious – just his voice and acoustic guitar. Karl delivered a fantastic set, a young man with a rosey future. And at the Rock – folk for a fiver event the wonderful Roy Machin and then the multi- instrumentalist trio beggars banquette, who have taken the Stones song book and found their inner folkieness and delivered an amazing concert. They finished up with Last Time which morphed into an Irish jig. Catch them if you can – they are just beginning their tour.

He is a late 20th century sculptor whose work I find predictable and dull, but he was clearly very successful and well connected, as so much of it has been cast into bronze. Chatsworth gardens are always worth a visit and this work may add to the pleasure. Curated by Yorkshire Sculpture Park. A more exciting exhibition – to my mind - is by Emma Tennant, the 12th Duke of Devonshire’s sister and mother of the 1980s tall skinny punk fashion model -Stella. Emma is a painter and gardener and this exhibition brings these facets of her life together. www.chatsworth.org T

A monthly look at ways to Combat Crime, with East Bassetlaw’s Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Neil Bellamy.

Three Golden Rules of vehicle security Over the last two months i have been writing about not advertising your belongings and personal details to thieves and in this third – and final – article in the series, i want to deal with vehicle crime. For many people – after their home – their car is their second most expensive single purchase, yet it is amazing how many people fail to look after their vehicle. Vehicle thefts, including bicycles and motorcycles, are crimes of opportunity, yet around one fifth of all drivers admit they regularly leave their car unlocked. To outwit the thief, there are three golden rules • Always keep your car locked. This includes the sunroof and windows even if you are only leaving it for a few

22 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

seconds – that’s all the time it takes a criminal to steal your car or your belongings. • Don’t leave anything in your car whether it is valuable or not, particularly when it is parked overnight. More than 60 per cent of thefts of and from vehicles occur when they are parked outside the home. If you must leave items in your vehicle, lock them in the boot or out of sight and be particularly careful with expensive stereo units, mobile phones & satnavs. • Park with care. Park in busy well lit areas near CCTV cameras or in police approved “ParkMark” car parks. Always chain bikes, motorcycles and scooters to something fixed, like a security rail or post Keeping you car secure: Never leave the keys in the ignition, not even when you are filling up or paying for petrol. Don’t leave anything on display, and wipe any suction marks off your windscreen as they alert a thief to the presence of valuable items in your car. Never leave vehicle documents or spare keys in your car and if your car doesn’t have one already, considering fitting an approved alarm or immobiliser or a steering lock on an older vehicle. If you own a high value or performance vehicle, consider fitting a tracking device. Have your car’s registration number etched on all glass surfaces, including

the headlamps, and ensure your number plates are secured properly to prevent theft. If your number plates are stolen, report it to the police. Even when you are driving, keep doors and windows locked and bags and mobile phones out of view. A thief can lean in and snatch them in the time it takes for a red light to turn green. Keeping your motorcycle secure: Put a steering lock on and use a strong steel cable or D-lock to attach your bike to security rails or a ground anchor. Consider a professionally fitted combined alarm and immobiliser. If you have a garage – use it . Or at least cover your motorcycle when you are not using it. Keeping your bicycle secure: buy a good quality lock that can withstand attack. Two locks will double your security, and lock your bike to an immovable object. Keep you bike secure at home. Keep it in the garage or shed and lock it up even when it is in there. When locking it to a fence or post, make sure it cannot simply be lifted off and get your bike frame security marked with your name and postcode. Your local police may be able to help with this. The more difficult you can make life for a thief, the better, and the more likely you are to retain your valuable possessions. T

Harworth & bircotes Town Council - April 2013 up in the drama unfolding before their eyes. i think the treat provided by the Town Clerk to every child at the end of each performance also enhanced their enjoyment of their trip to the Town Hall!

Fouling Fine

A man and his dog were spotted by environmental Officers near Harworth Crossroads as he was returning from a walk on Blyth road. The dog fouled the footpath, the owner did not pick up the mess, and the man was duly fined. This was a serendipity moment, as the officers were in the Town checking air pollution, not dog fouling! i do know the dog owner has since paid the fine, so credit to him; it helps to always keep a plastic bag in your pocket. Owning a dog does bring with it responsibilities, not just to the dog but to the rest of society.

Rubbish!

This was the name of a play performed in early March at our Town Hall for primary school children from our community, and we were pleased to also invite children from Blyth Primary. The play was excellent, and there were several performances; it was a wonderful to watch the children, who were absolutely caught 24 HARWORTH & bIRCOTES TODAY

Don’t Blame The Council!

i was waiting in a local store to pay for my goods, and couldn’t help but hear the conversation being held with the customer in front of me. The shop assistant was expressing concerns about the drop in the number of customers which, it was said, was due to the advent of supermarkets in our Town. Understandably, she was concerned about her job, but then finished her conversation with the words ‘B****y Council’. i immediately objected to this very unfair comment, and i will tell you why: • We live in a free market economy that encourages competition, and the local population generally supports the range of local trade on offer. • People who live in our Town are entitled to choose where they shop; they are also entitled to have and make choices about price, range and quality of the goods they purchase. • For years I have listened to people

asking for a wider choice of specific types of shops; now that this choice is growing shoppers are voting with their feet. • This Council is not to blame for firms making decisions about where they wish to trade; people have the option to object about proposed developments through recognised channels to the District Council. • I wrote to the store in question two years ago to ask for facilities that would benefit both them and the local community; it is now up to the management of that store to review their marketing strategy and pricing, in order to attract customers back and protect jobs. And yes, I do still support the store and continue to shop there.

Town Status

We are often asked why we changed to a town, rather than stay a village. i have to be honest and say that the reason was purely financial. When bidding for money from various pots, the word ‘Town’ indicates to those who hold the purse strings that this is a larger population than in a village; the logic then follows that money given to a larger population will reap greater benefits i.e. it will be seen, used and enjoyed by more people. community for extra funds is fierce and a sound business case has to be submitted; we are a population of around 7,500 and expected to grow to 12,000. We are also the third largest community in Bassetlaw – a fact we keep raising with Bassetlaw District Council, and a message that appears to have struck home with District; they now regard Harworth and Bircotes as having great potential for development, for both business and housing. Since becoming a Town, we have secured extra funding of £600,000. We have used that money to make improvements, such as: • Purchase and improve the Community Information Centre from b.D.C. and operate services from it, including Notts. County Council (County Contact), A1 (Housing Officer, Debt Advisers, Rent Services), bassetlaw District Council, the Credit Union, Framework, Connexions, and your Town Clerk. These services have not been lost in Harworth and bircotes, as they have in some other areas, they have stayed local, and new services have also been introduced. Result: important services are available and easily accessible for local people; this is the reason we bought the building. • We now have decent Public Toilets • We have been able to develop the New Cemetery, in readiness for use later this year, including tree planting around what is a very large area, and paths have been laid. • We used some of the money to complete the refurbishment of the Town Hall, which is proving to be very successful, alongside Sure Start who provide many valued benefits to our community, including midwifery and health visiting services • On an annual basis we plant bulbs along the approach roads, at the end of which attractive new Town signs and planters are clearly visible; we now have planters within the Town – more will appear – and hanging baskets.

• Purchasing a vehicle has given us greater versatility, and the John Deere tractor has allowed us to take over grass cutting from Notts. County; this means the grass gets cut when it needs to be cut, not when we reach the top of the County rota. • The War Memorial and surrounding area has been refurbished and improved, and the Monument at Harworth Crossroads has also been professionally cleaned. • The allotments on Bawtry Road now have a water supply and protective fencing, and more rubbish bins are evident around the Town, along with bins for dog waste. This extra funding we have gained for our Town also enables Council to match-fund; when residents on the Wimpey Estate and Holderness Close asked for more dropped kerbs on pathways, we were able to contribute money, along with A1 and County Council, and together negotiate a reasonable price. Match-funding and partnership working will become more evident in the future

nine Parish Councils, and we get a substantial financial contribution from County, which is a real bonus for investment back into our community.

What An Idiot!

On the morning of 11th March a man walked into the Community information Centre and was abusive to the female officer working there from Bassetlaw District Council. His problem?Council Tax. He didn’t see why he should have to pay it; he had never paid it before. Let me explain. Some people qualify for a discount on the amount of Council Tax they pay; some previously got 100% discount. The Government changed the rules, capped the amount of discount, and directed Councils to set up a local Council Tax benefit scheme. This means that everyone in bassetlaw now has to pay at the very least 8% Council Tax, even though bassetlaw has not increased the amount of Council Tax for 4 years. 8% is one of the lowest levels possible, whereas in some areas, discounts have been capped at 22%. The officer explained this was a result of changes made by the Government to the Council Tax benefit scheme, not bassetlaw District Council, though this made little impression on him. When she told him how much a week this would cost him, he threatened to ‘wipe the bill on his backside’ – he really is a charming man. I would suggest that if he does this, he should send the bill to David Cameron or George Osborne and not b.D.C – at least this would prompt some reaction, such as a visit from the police.....

Getting extra funds and being a Town with a growing population has helped us take the lead in this scheme. Modernising the way staff work, buying a vehicle and new equipment, meant that we were in a prime position to help smaller Parish Councils with jobs previously undertaken by County Council, and get those jobs done as/when needed. i am aware that Persimmon This has proved so successful Homes is interested in building that our cluster now includes in Harworth, and that they

community are considering holding an Open Day for the public to view their proposals; i have no further details as yet. Notts. County Council has fulfilled the promise made to us to repair the footpath leading from Harworth to styrrup. The New Cemetery on styrrup road will, we believe, be in use by this summer. H&B Council will then be tendering for a building on the cemetery site to store simple equipment; for obvious reasons it will need to be robust and a deterrent to local thieves.
