Welcome to

the APRIL 2014 edition

“You cannot open a book… ...without learning something” Confucius As a child I was an avid reader, Enid Blyton and Noel Streatfeild being 2 of my favourite authors, but first study and then work, and then a young family and other responsibilities reduced my reading time to the extent that the only time I would pick up a book would be on holiday. But a couple of years ago I resolved to give myself a little more ‘me time’ and part of that included reading. A simple pleasure but one which can be incredibly satisfying, and, depending on the choice of literature, totally enriching and potentially life changing. So whatever genre floats your boat this Easter I challenge you to settle down with a cup of tea and a book or two for company. Open your mind and see where a good book can take you, whether it be learning a new skill or hobby, re-visiting a classic from your youth, honing your detective skills with a crime thriller or just a good old ‘chick-lit’ holiday book! The May issues will be delivered to you late April. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 4th April. Apologies for the early closing date, as you probably know I have 3 school aged children and where possible I like to take time off during their school holidays, so this month I have brought the print date forward a week so I am not at my busiest during their holidays – you never know maybe I will find some time for reading too!

Enjoy April and I will back in a months’ time with your May magazine!

Best wishes, Paula x

Clear Communication It’s time for a cuppa again. Thank you again for popping round. I don’t take our times together for granted. Thank you again for the many kind comments either through email, text or in person. Also Paula has been so gracious to allow this to be included as part of Rossington Today. I am sure you realise we have some great tea here. Something a bit surprising happened during the time I was Stateside. I was at a church on the east coast. I was

complaining to one of the blokes there about American tea and mentioned the brand I like here. Later that afternoon, what do I find being given to me but a little box of PG Tips ... in America! How about that?! Well, believe it or not, Easter is days away. I asked the children at Grange Lane last week what Easter is all about. I got the standard “eggs”, “chocolate” sort of answers. Then there was a young lass in Y2 pipe up “when Jesus died”! How about that!? But then I had to add Jesus’ resurrection (or to put it in infant school language ... “Jesus became alive again”). Did you ever think that those two words being put together seems awfully weird? While LIFE is so positive and happy, death is so negative and unhappy. We are now in the time of year when death and life come together. It is not just Good Friday / Easter time but this is planting time as well. The seeds that will be put into the

April Messy Church 7 April (Monday) AND 10 April (Thursday) 3.30-5.30 pm Holmescarr Community Centre ( (Grange Lane nr. ASDA)

ground all round the village must first decay in order to bring life (the plant/flower). What do you think of when I say the word “life”? There are probably answers like family, work, fun, holiday, friends, etc. And those are great answers. Did you know that Jesus came to give us life (John 10:10)? The problem with our standard answers to what life is all about is that those things bring disappointment at times. All those things are good and are part of who we are. But if our purpose and sense of “life” depend on those, “life” will go up and down like the stock market. Find Jesus. Find life. If you want to chat a bit about this, give me a bell. No pressure. The whole thing of “clear communication” has come up to me in various ways over this last year. In our families, communication is as important as anything else. Let’s take some time over the next few months to chat about that. And as always, the door is always open and the kettle is on.

In 2015 the next World Scout Jamboree will take place in Japan. South Yorkshire Scouts are sending 36 young people and 4 leaders to Japan to represent the South Yorkshire region. They will join over 3000 other Scouts from around the U.K. The theme of this World Scout Jamboree is Peace and Unity. This is what the Scout Association is striving for and working hard towards by educating our young people.

The Branch is currently recruiting new members, service, exservice, and none service, anyone who may be interested can contact Mr Keith Asquith on 01302-868454. Mr Brian Green - Branch Secretary. T

Two young leaders from Rossington Scout Group have been chosen to attend the 23rd World Scout Jamboree. Andrew McAteer and James Davies started scouting at the age of 6 in the Beaver section. They have been right through the sections, going onto Cubs, Scouts and are now Explorers. They also volunteer on a weekly basis as Young Leaders helping other young children at Cubs and Scouts. When they aren’t at their group they help out on the County team and Scout campsites. The Scout Association is a voluntary youth movement and a registered charity. All operating costs come from the hard work of the members who fundraise for us. Each person is tasked with raising £3,200 to attend this Jamboree – this means we have to raise £6,400 to send these two scouts, this is a huge amount. As a unit we need your support to help us get there. A proportion of the £3200 is to help pay for a scout from a less well-off country to attend. Whilst in Japan they will be visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, staying with a Japanese family and doing community work in the local area. This is an exceptional opportunity for all attending! We have started to raise monies and to date Rossington Top Club, the Labour Club, Certex, Bridon and individuals have kindly contributed and their generous donations have been gratefully received. We will be holding raffles, tombolas and evening events in the village so please support us if you can. Follow them on twitter to keep up to date with events at @rossingtonwsj. If you feel you can help in anyway please get in touch via Jim Paterson on 01302 864742 stating you wish to support our Jamboree participants. Thank you for your support. T

Rossington Councillor’s Update I reported a couple of months ago that the speed indicator sign on Littleworth Lane was about to be installed, I didn’t know about the inefficiency of Yorkshire electricity at the time. People complain about the Council, but others take the biscuit for inefficiency, as I sit here it still hasn’t been done, although there is a hole in the ground! By next time I hope, finally, to really say that the sign has been installed and working. It should reduce the speeding that regularly occurs on Littleworth Lane as it becomes busier and busier. Now to the sad news, and I’m sure most of you know, John Quinn, well respected Rossington Councillor for 25 years and the only person to be civic Mayor twice, died and was buried in Grange Lane crematory after a service in Christ the King church. Such a kind and caring man will be sadly missed by all those he helped and all those who knew him. At time and especially when he got excited he tended to speak a foreign language, but he did try and help us poor English by talking really slowly, he didn’t change his accent even after living in Rossington for 50 years. This village will be a worse place from his passing. He was Labour through and through and was the Chair of the Amenities and Leisure Committee on DMBC. Our sad condolences go out to Ella and their family. After months of hard work Ros Jones our elected Mayor has presented a three year Budget to deal with the appalling £109,000,000 cuts imposed on us by the Government. This has to include a 1.95% increase in Council Tax, the first in four years and this is to ensure that we keep some of the services that the Council provides. This equates to an increase of £14.32 per year for a band ‘A’ property and £21.48 per year for a band ‘D’ property. The Council Tax in Doncaster is the third lowest in the country. We have finally finished the Skate Park extension on the Welfare, it is greatly appreciated by the kids who are using it. This was paid for by some section 106 moneys left over from other projects and some matched funding by WREN, a grant awarding agency to encourage recycling and using money from the landfill tax. Each major waste company runs its’ own fund, and we are in the range of two funds, Wren and Veolla. I hope to use both as much as I can. 10

I spent some time at Asda on Grange Lane with our MP Caroline Flint discussing the involvement in the community by ASDA. It amazed me how much involvement they had and to prove a point the showed us the work they had done with our own and new mini and junior rugby team Little Stingers. They are affiliated to Rossington Hornets (Hornets – Stingers, get it!!!) and train on the Welfare. This is an excellent and safe activity for kids and teaches them teamwork, sportsmanship and discipline as well as getting them fit and I fully support this and encourage parents to involve their children. News on the Holmescarr front; as you know this is our community building as well as a DMBC facility and is being used even more. Tornedale nursery and Swimstars and Dolphins have moved in and the when the old kitchen is refurbished (soon) Eric the Pastor is moving in for a range of activities. Unfortunately illness has delayed any movement bringing a credit union to Rossington, but the representative of South Yorkshire Credit Union is now well and we will start afresh. Crime is at an all-time low as is ASB’s although there are small spikes in some bad behaviour, please report anything suspicious or anything that may result in a crime or ASB to the police on 101 or 999. ¬Finally Barry Johnson your long-standing Councillor is retiring form active politics and so Rossington Branch Labour party have selected John Healy to be our candidate for May’s election. Kindest Regards

Priority goes from strength to strength Since being taken over in November by Karlene Ravenhill, wife of former Doncaster Rovers player Ricky Ravenhill, Priority Hair Salon, one of Doncaster’s largest hair salons has gone from strength to strength. Last month saw the showcase relaunch event for the salon which attracted Doncaster Rovers Players James Coppinger, Russ Turnball and Rob Jones to come along and try the salon out for themselves. The evening event was a real success with an opening speech from Civic Mayor Councillor Eddie Dobbs who praised Karlene and her team for the fantastic work they had done with salon. There was a silent auction on the night in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, which raised over £400 for the charity in just two hours. Owner Karlene Ravenhill commented “I am so delighted with how the relaunch event has gone, we really raised the profile of the salon and took lots of bookings from new clients all looking for the superior service that we offer” She added “And being able to raise the money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice really made the night an outstanding success all round”

But Karlene is not stopping there. She has already added another string to the Salon’s bow by introducing Chelsea Brook – Nail and Beauty Technician who will be heading up the beauty services of the salon, offering a wide range of beauty treatments including Gel Nails, Waxing, lashes and spray tanning. Since the relaunch, the salon has also been delighted to add to their team of hair experts by welcoming Simone, formerly of Crush Salon in Rossington and is pleased to offer new clients an introductory discount of 15% on Monday – Friday with all stylists and for nail and beauty services. Simply bring this page along to the salon before the end of April to redeem this offer. (May not be used in conjunction with any other offers)

Growing Old

A frightening number of patients are told by health professionals that having to slow down is part of growing older and they are going to have to start putting up with aches and pains. Yet this needn’t be the case. Of course we cannot stop the body from growing older and there will be changes that are part of the normal ageing process. Bones become less dense, muscle strength and flexibility is reduced and there will be evidence of joint ‘wear and tear’. A reduced metabolism may lead to weight gain which in turn exacerbates these problems. The great news is that numerous pieces of research indicate that you can help yourself enormously by combating these changes with physical activity. Regular physical activity will help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce the loss of bone density, strengthen muscles and keep joints flexible. Exercise also means a healthy heart and good circulation with the added benefits of an enhanced mood and a good nights sleep. As with most things, there may be glitches associated with increasing your physical activity – either problems getting started or obstacles to overcome along the way. Physiotherapy can help. Physiotherapists can carry out a musculoskeletal assessment in order to offer you specific and expert advice on exercising and achieving good physical condition. Pain and stiffness associated with common complaints like arthritis, neck and back pain can be treated in order to help you achieve your goals.

A Christian Tradition

Give Blood? There are a couple of blood donation

Dear Friends, Just opposite the manse in which I live is the Sprotbrough Country Club. As I look out from my office window on a sunny but cold February morning, what stick in the air are a few palm branches from two trees outside the pub. These remind me of Palm Sunday, a Christian tradition. A week before Easter, Christians celebrate Palm Sunday - the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. In other words a week before Jesus’ death and resurrection, he had a ‘red carpet’ treatment as he entered Jerusalem. The Bible states that people from all walks of life raised palm branches and laid some on Jesus’ path (with some clothes) as he rode on a donkey whiles they shouted ‘Hosanna’ meaning ‘save now’ (Matthew 21: 6-9). Red carpet treatment is rampant these days especially at almost every award ceremony or VIP visits. Some of us seem to think that the people we adore and sometimes we worship have some form of salvation for us as we treat them special.

sessions available locally during April

I wonder what needs saving in your life, home, work, school, community or family this lent and Easter season? I’m not reminding you that it’s time to do away with chocolate or coffee again. This may sound great but it takes more than that to instill self-control in our generation. Acknowledging Jesus as Saviour, as the people in Bible times did, is a step in the right direction as we ask for his help in our dealings in this world. Interestingly, salvation is free and one only needs to open up and ask for it. On the other hand, because it’s very simple, many people find it too good to be true. But just to reassure you that it’s not a hype to ask for it. It’ll do your soul good. However, if you still want to know more or need some help, kindly contact a church near you or this writer on 01302857952 or frank.okai-sam@ methodist.org.uk It is my prayer the good Lord will keep in you perfect peace as you celebrate Lent and Easter in a special way this year. God bless.

Friends of Brodsworth Way Once again, we had a very good turn out for our March coffee morning, the next one will be on Thursday 3rd April, from 9 until 11, in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion, as usual. Over the last 2 years it has been necessary for us to take out Public Liability insurance for the coffee mornings, the money for which has been scraped together, with help from our Parish Council and with what little donations we receive at the coffee mornings so the time has now come to admit that the end is coming of the group. It is our intention to carry on with the coffee mornings up to and including July, the first Thursday in each month, after which time the current insurance policy will expire. Also, the fact that I shall be moving away from the estate, obviously means that I won’t be quite so local to come and open/close the Pavilion. My friend, Cynthia, likewise, may well be leaving the estate so really, that’s it! The Friends of Brodsworth Way group will probably fold up, however, if there is someone on the estate who might like to continue the group and regenerate it, please let me know. We’ve actually been established since the summer of 2009 with the specific aim of having a collective voice if any serious issues arose on the estate, and having direct contact with the Police and Council. We will keep going as aforementioned and are so grateful to our supporters for turning up, even in horrible weather. Regards, Susan • (T: 869001) T

TICKHILL AN DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Burning down of Rossington W.I. Hall Following the sad loss of the W.I. hall after a fire on 17th January Lions were approached by several of the groups which had lost their base, the Parent and Toddlers Club, the Rainbows and the Girl Guides. Initially we have donated £250 to each of the three groups towards covering the increase in rental costs for a few months following their move to alternative accommodation at the Holmescarr Centre. We are aware that the community spirit of Rossington has resulted in many of the toys and other items lost in the fire being replaced by parents and local residents but we will try to assist with the cost of any important items which may not be covered by insurance.

Rossington Childrens Centre Letters of thanks have been received from many of those families which received food hampers provided by Lions for Christmas.

Flood Appeal We have donated £250 to the Lions SouthWest Counties Flood Appeal.

SKRUM • Swaziland Kids Rugby Mission Michael Collinson, a Rossington mining engineer and charismatic leader went out to Swaziland in 1985 and quickly fell in love with the country, its people and the rugby scene. He and his wife decided to stay and he channelled his love and enthusiasm for the game into the Swaziland Rugby Union, becoming its President in 1998. His playing career ended on Boxing Day 2002 when a driving accident resulted in severe injury and his severed spinal cord was beyond repair. Michael is wheelchair bound for the rest of his life but he remains the life and soul of the party. Since then SKRUM’S mission has been to give the school children of Swaziland much-needed education on sex awareness, while introducing an element of fun – Rugby. SKRUM will visit 6 schools each week, coaching and educating roughly 60 children at each school in the social skills necessary for healthy and responsible living. The SKRUM programme has now kicked off in more African countries in partnership with HIV/AIDS and health awareness programmes and will visit a further 200 schools and reach 12,000 young rugby players in each country. They will also conduct Rugby Coaching and Officiating Courses at Teacher Training Colleges within each country, training suitable Coach Trainers to assist in promoting the SKRUM programme. With SKRUM needing £200 per school to cover all costs, or £40,000 per country per year funding is important and help has come from players and clubs in the UK and South Africa. We have agreed to provide £500 towards this vital work.

EASTER EGGS We have 48 giant Easter Eggs being raffled in pubs, clubs and shops around the district. Many thanks to those of you who have already purchased a number. Lion Phil Thomas. 18

Hello from Right Up Our Street! It’s been great meeting lots more people in Rossington over the last month and we’ve got lots of great events and opportunities coming up as part of the programme of creative activity that is Right Up Our Street. Rossington Artist in Residence 14 – 15 April. 11am – 3pm. Holmescarr Community Library Ever wondered what life as an artist is like? Meet artist Katherine, find out what projects she’s working on and get a portrait drawn for free! As part of the residency, Neil McGregor from Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery will be dropping by to show off his own art work 1 – 2pm Tue 15 April. 300 Years of Art in Doncaster 15 April. 2 – 3pm. Holmescarr Community Library . An exciting and informal talk by Neil McGregor from Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery. Neil will be showing examples of works in the gallery’s collection, sharing how Doncaster’s history has shaped the art the town has collected. With time included to share stories of local history. Rossington Village Quilt – ‘100 Scars for 100 years’ To commemorate the centenary of WW1 Rossington will be getting its own village quilt. The theme of this project is scars, to emphasise the healing power of time, and

recovery from trauma, great or small. We’d like to hear from anyone who has a scar, with an interesting, funny or moving story connected to it. It could be from anything from an operation to work injury to falling off a bike. The scars will be photographed (and remain anonymous) then digitally printed onto fabric to make a giant, and striking patchwork quilt to be permanently displayed in the village. If you would like to share your story then contact Katherine on 01302 558065 or e-mail Katherine@ rightupourstreet.org.uk. Are you interested in photography? Sewing? Patchwork? Then this community art work could be made by you! We want to involve as many people as possible in the making of Rossington Village Quilt so get in touch with Katherine to find out more! A Song For Rossington Rossington Community Team want to commission a Song for Rossington to be performed by local people in summer 2014. Climbing the Walls

If your garden is short on space, rammed with plants, or you simply have an unsightly vertical surface to cover, climbing plants can be used to great effect: from clothing frameworks such as pergolas and arches to hiding sheds and even neighbours! Whether it’s as fast growing as a Triffid, a dainty floral twiner, or an evergreen clinger, I’m certain there’s a climber out there for you, it’s just a case of meeting your perfect match. For those of you lucky enough to have a south-facing doorway, why not spoil yourself with the highly scented fragrance of Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides). Not only is it evergreen, but it boasts the added benefit of a claret-red leaf colour in autumn. For those with a north-facing entrance, how about a plant combo starting with an early flowering Clematis tolerant of shade, such as ‘Frances Rivis’, followed by the stunning pink flowers of Rosa ‘Zephirine Drouhin’, perfect in shade with the added bonus of being a thornless variety. If it’s a shady spot and a fast growing evergreen you require you really can’t beat Ivy, but I understand many people are not huge fans, so why not put in the extra effort and seek out a great alternative known as Pileostegia viburnoides. It’s a bit of a mouthful but not only is it evergreen, it will 26

provide white flowers in summer and like Ivy is a self clinger, but nowhere near as vigorous. As well as the other common examples, such as Wisteria (only plant this in full sun and if you are prepared to tie it in and prune it twice annually), Honeysuckle and Pyracantha (great for deterring intruders due to its woody thorns), there is a whole range of other shrubs which can be grown against a wall or fence, not forgetting trees of course, such as the beautiful trained fruit trees we often see in Victorian walled gardens. Shrubs planted at around 30cm away from the base of the wall or fence can be manually tied in and make excellent wall cover, often with the added benefit of flowers. Photinia ‘Red Robin’ for example, or Garrya elliptica make unusual evergreen wall coverings, and look great with a second flowering climber twining through. Don’t forget the huge variety of annuals available which you can grow from seed, such as Sweet Peas, Morning Glory, or maybe try climbing French beans as an edible wall covering? Do ensure that you provide sturdy wires for plants to travel up. The best and most cost-effective way is simply to fix vine eyes (spaced horizontally around 2m apart) to the fence or wall and vertically at 30cm intervals. Then use a taught

network of galvanised wires to provide support. Be sure to tie climbers in horizontally and not vertically as most people do … this way they will look great in your garden rather than flopping over the fence and delighting your neighbour … now that really would drive me up the garden wall!

Until next time, happy gardening ,

Lee .

GreenThumb celebrate their 10 Year Anniversary This year GreenThumb Doncaster West are celebrating their 10 year anniversary. Lee and Jayne started GreenThumb Doncaster West franchise back in March 2004. They had seen the impressive results of the GreenThumb treatment at a relatives garden in Cheshire. After making enquiries they found there wasn’t a branch where they lived in Doncaster and so ended up buying a franchise. Ten years on they are still here and now employ 4 lawn treatment operatives and treat over 3000 lawns in and around the Doncaster area. They have built their business on giving good customer service and carrying out the work in a professional manner. This has worked extremely well and they still get many new customers each year from the recommendations of their existing customers. Lee says “We know that the GreenThumb treatments work well and give good results, however we always say it is a partnership between us and the customer – we can apply the treatments but it is then down to the customer to look after their lawn with regular cutting (not too short!) and watering if the weather is dry”.

Rossington Parish Council The Parish Council set on an Assistant Parish Clerk, Anne Hammond, to help the Parish Clerk with his ever increasing workload. Anne will be concentrating on the Neighbourhood Plan and looking for grants to help stretch the Parish Precept amongst other things. She has started well and is keen to train up to do even better. We have co-opted Abby McMillan as Parish Councillor to represent the younger end of our village I expect she will do well. She has been a volunteer at some of our events and was one of Santa’s elves, along with Ali Harper, at the recent Xmas Fayre. The Recycoal grants are going well and so far Rossington Main Cricket Club, Rossington Boys Under 7s, Radburn TARA, Rossington Women’s Institute, Rossington Happy Crafters & Bright Sparks Day Nursery have all benefitted from their generous fund. Any reasonable cause will be considered, however funds are not unlimited and requests should also be reasonable. The DARTS (Doncaster Arts) Right Up Our Street Project wishes to find someone local who would write, produce and perform a Song for Rossington. The song would be performed at the Mega Fun Day after a parade through the village. The tender to produce the song will go out on 10 March 2014 via Arts Jobs, National and Local Press, Rossington Today and Word of Mouth. The successful candidate will have to undertake further consultation with at least 1,000 residents and complete by May 2014. There is significant money available for this. The Right Up Our Street Project is funded by the Arts Council. The next event organised by the Parish Council is the Easter Eggstravaganza at Brodsworth Way Pavilion on Brodsworth Way. This is to be held on Easter Sunday on 20th April 2014 between 11.00 and 4.00. This will be bigger than ever with the usual fun fair and bouncy castles, but also a Bungee Run, and blow up Giant Slide, a blow up Assault Course, A Laser Quest and a Climbing Wall there will also be play equipment specifically for the under 5’s – all FREE. As well as this there will be the Rovers coaches organising football and us, the Parish Councillors providing the BBQ and 32

refreshments. We hope to also have a number of stalls The events this year will be the Easter Eggstravaganza as already mentioned, A Mega Fun day on the Welfare that will be rather spectacular also free, the Village Way Fun Day on Leger Saturday, the Beer Festival with free entry, the Bonfire and Fireworks display, a Christmas Fayre that may change this year and finally the Village Pantomime. We have had three sub-committee meetings; the Project at which the above was discussed, the Planning at which there were three routine matters and one interesting, the erection of one pair of semidetached houses on Allenby Crescent. Just to show how big a lot of the gardens are in Rossington! The other sub-committee was the Triple A at which we resurrected the Neighbourhood Plan which had been in limbo due to the change in Parish Clerks and my ill health. Now as Arnie says ‘I’m Back’ so it is one of the things that we need to push ahead. After a record 12 minute Parish Council meeting in January we got into some meat and discussed the DMBC budget cuts, these were debated upon at length and it was resolved to write a letter to The Rt Hon Eric Pickles, The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and chief axe man complaining about the cuts and the effect on the poor; particularly mentioning that this Government is using hunger as a weapon against the poorest in society. We also discussed the possibility of DMBC passing on to the Parish Council some of their assets in the village as a cost saving exercise. We also received from our Parish Clerk, Barry Chadwick and update on the Memorial Hall finances and the way forward.
