s there anybody there‌..?

A look at Simon Goodfellow with Dave Harper Our need for proof that our friends and loved ones have survived physical death, and are safe and well on the other side, has never been greater than it is today. Even some battle hardened sceptics are seeking the reassurance they once would have scoffed at. How fortunate we are then, that we are sent people like Simon Goodfellow, who strive to bring us the evidence and comfort we seek in a way that is meaningful to each of us. Without such people, our upsurge in belief could begin to dip again and that would be an immeasurable loss. That is why, of course, the Simon Goodfellows of the world are provided in the first place - thank goodness. Simon's attitude towards his abilities is remarkably humble, given that he has the ultimate gift. According to Simon, "Mediums are just ordinary people who usually have families and everyday jobs. A Medium is just a link between this world and the spirit world and everybody alive has Mediumistic capabilities of some kind, it's just a case of whether you wish to use and develop them." The paradox is this: for all his 'ordinariness' he really is anything but! It is true that, born and bred in Yorkshire, Simon is about as down to earth as you can get. He has no delusions of grandeur, there are no displays of ego, there is no sense of superiority. He’s just Simon. However, he has that beautiful gift of instantly putting you at your ease. He is one to those people who, within minutes of talking to him, you feel as though you have known him a life time. There is the sense that he would give you all the time in the world if that was what you needed and then there is the ready laughter and a sense of humour that just barely stops itself from bubbling over and which makes its way naturally into his work. Simon is the first person to point out that people do not change once they have moved to the other side of life. In his words, "If Uncle Jack was a joker in life, Uncle Jack will still be the same when working through a Medium. The personality does not change when they pass over" The beauty of Simon's approach is to connect to the personality, sense of humour and quirks of a loved one's character and this is one of the most comforting things when he brings a message to someone. For all who have lost a loved one, it is these very things that we miss the most and which we yearn to re-experience. It’s one of the greatest proofs a Medium can bring and Simon brings it in abundance.

Added to this is the unique sensitivity with which Simon treats both the people who seek his help and guidance and those he contacts on the other side of life. During demonstrations, he will go directly to the person for whom he has a message, be they in the front row or the back of the hall, and he will talk personally with them and their loved one. It is a particularly lovely way of working because it creates an intimacy that would otherwise be lacking if he were to remain at the front while speaking to someone at the far side of the room. It is this special personalisation, together with his uncanny accuracy, that has earned him the respect of sceptics and believers alike both in the UK and abroad. It is when you ask Simon to talk about his work that his passion really emanates from him. he is acutely aware of the burden of responsibility that accompanies his gifts, yet he takes this in this stride and determines to fulfil his purpose with genuine modesty, and you can just feel that he loves what he does and enjoys the journey - wherever it takes him. " Having the ability to link loved ones and friends who have crossed over to Spirit and to give so many people closure and direction in their lives is, for me, one of the greatest joys I could experience Simon explains Simon's knowledge and understanding of Mediumship is vast. it is not just knowing what to do that makes a remarkable Medium, it is also knowing what not to do and this is something he has mastered graciously. It is one of the many attributes that make him one of the most sort after and respected Mediums of today. It comes as no surprise that public demand for Simon's demonstrations and evenings with.... is rapidly escalating or that he is undertaking a Tour in 2011 to reach those who would otherwise be unable to reach him for sheer lack of days in the year. For those of you who are currently sceptical, I would encourage you to put your faith in Simon's ability. I feel you will not remain sceptical for long. For those of you who already believe but perhaps need affirmation, clarity, closure or a clear connection, you are assured of a sensitive and honest response. You can find details of all Simon's Tour Dates, Demonstrations and Evenings on his website www.simongoodfellow.com .

ossington History Group. April 1st, stApril Fools Day.

On April 1 , 1700, the English began popularising the annual tradition of April Fools Day by playing practical jokes on each other. Although the day has been celebrated for several centuries, its exact origin remains a mystery. One theory is that it dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The New Year in the Gregorian calendar was January 1 st, rather than April 1st. News of the change obviously didn’t get through to some people who continued to celebrate on the old date. They became the butt of jokes and hoaxes, including having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’Avril”, said to symbolise a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. April Fools day has also been linked to the ancient Roman festival “Hilaria” in honour of the goddess Cybele, when people dressed up in disguises. It may also be connected to the vernal equinox, or first day of spring in the northern hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. April Fools Day spread throughout Britain during the 18 th century. In Scotland, the tradition became a two day event, starting with “hunting the gowk”, in which people were sent on phoney errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks such as pinning tails or “kick me” signs on peoples bottoms. Modern times have seen elaborate hoaxes such as one carried out in 1957, when the B.B.C. reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting spaghetti from trees. This story about April Fools day, written by one of the pupils, appeared in the 1937 edition of the Rossington Senior Boys School magazine. It was the morning of April 1st, and I sat up in bed wondering what I could do to celebrate the occasion – April Fools Day. What could I do to fool Father? An idea came to me like a flash. Up I got and then dressed. I was just going downstairs when I felt a kind of sinking feeling and sure enough I was sinking. My stockings were ankle full of butter. After I had emptied the butter out, I got some clean socks and felt much more comfortable. Just as I got downstairs I picked up my wristlet watch and put the fingers on two hours. I then went into the room. “Good morning Mother; good morning Dad” and then I suddenly gave a shout of alarm. “Dad, that clock’s two hours slow.” “How do you know?” asked my father. “Well I put my watch right with Big Ben last night and it never gains.” “Well, I’ll have to dash off to the office or I shall be late” said Father and off he hurried. After he had gone I burst into a fit of laughter. “What is the matter?” Mother asked. “Only that the clock is right and it is only seven-o-clock!” When my father reached the office and opened the door, he found the caretaker just lighting the fire. “Good morning” he said. “B’aint you a trifle early this morning?” “Early?” said my father. “Why what time is it?” “Just gone quarter past seven sir” said Jenkinson, “and if you don’t mind me saying so sir, you’ve been fooled.” “So I have” said my father, and off he went home. ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – April News

Now that the clocks have been moved forward and British Summer Time is with us the cycling season can really start to get in full swing in April. Those that follow this column will have noted that there has been no let up in the regular Sunday Club Runs but hopefully now there’ll be chance for club members to get out on an evening, shed the winter layers and overshoes and start to work on those tan lines….(wishful thinking no doubt…?) Various forms of racing will be visible on local roads from this point so please keep an eye out for these as well as pleasure riders and commuters alike when on your travels. The club’s own weekly 10 mile Time Trials begin Wednesday 20/4/2011 at 7.00pm from Hatfield Woodhouse to Blaxton Blue Bell roundabout and back and will include a new handicap league table for club members – so watch this space for weekly results updates in what we hope will be a keenly contested competition! The mileage of Sunday morning club rides will again continue to increase through April with the Coast 2 Coast ride in mind. A special program of rides has been mapped out for the double bank holiday weeks which incorporate Easter and the Royal Wedding for a dedicated training week where up to 600 miles could be clocked up by some riders! Hopefully then a couple of solid rides in May should see the 145 mile trek attainable in early June, I hope so? The April Sunday club rides are as follows (all leaving The Styrrup at 9.00am) 03/04/11 – Flanders Classic , Brookhouse 60 mile Brutal 10/04/11 – Limes Café Bilsthorpe 65 mile Rolling 17/04/11 – Saxilby, Lincoln 75 mile Flat 24/04/11 – Lotherton Hall, Garforth 75 mile Rolling I’m running short of space now to describe the March rides that have taken place, suffice is it to say most were wet and some were windy and we’ll leave it at that! As always the club website is the source of all club info and that from other official sources www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk and Hudson Cycles on King Avenue is the first port of call for any face to face advice from Chairman – Les Hudson. The 2011 senior season gets under thway this month with the First XI at home to Norton Oakes of Sheffield on Saturday 16 April in Division 1 of The South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League. The First XI are fresh off the back of winning the Division 2 title in 2010 and have added 3 new players to the squad at the time of writing – all from a higher standard of cricket and so are looking for a good start to the season to build momentum for the lengthy season to come. Local competition in the Division is provided by Tickhill and Wath and with powerhouses like Treeton, Rotherham Town and Sheffield Collegiate also to play the standard is guaranteed to be high! The First XI are also at home 23/4 to Kexborough and travel to fellow 2010 promotees Wath on 30/4. The Second XI have also joined the SYSCL in Division 4 where the local competition is much stiffer with Warmsworth, Conisborough, Tickhill, Doncaster Town, Dearne and Maltby all providing opposition within the Division. Their campaign under new captain Michael Richardson gets underway 23/4 away at Kexborough and they make their home bow 30/4 against Dearne. The Sunday XI begin 17/4 at home to local rivals Warmsworth with a trip to Stainborough 24/4 completing the senior fixtures in April. Junior fixtures commence in May and so details will follow in the next issue of the magazine. Coaching sessions are still running on Monday evenings at Ian Wilson CSV Sports Hall between 6pm and 8pm and detailed club fixtures and subsequent match reports are available on the clubs official website www.rmcc.play-cricket.com The club has already scooped its first piece of silverware in 2011 capturing the All Saints Indoor 6-a-side League Title by 4 points from Hatfield Town, winning 10 of 12 games played. Stewart Groves headed the batting with 229 runs at an average of 25.4 and Scott Wood topped the bowling with 11 wickets at 12.3 runs each. Further contributions came from James Needham and Scott Wood with 195 and 189 runs respectively and Roy Nelson with 8 wickets at just 9.1 runs apiece. Rossington Councillor's Update Well, it nearly Spring and at last the children's play areas should have been repaired. The Holmescarr play area has had to have new foundations installed and this hopefully will give it its' planned life. The Atlee play area also should have the two vandalised pieces of play equipment repaired and replaced. The Welfare play area is being renewed and the Bankwood area should start very soon. The story of the Waddy bridge goes on and on; the first company awarded to contract went bust before starting. The Council had to go out again to tender which, luckily, was several thousand pounds cheaper. The bridge is now manufactured and ready to install, it will take ten days, but we are waiting for two of the four signatures from the Environment Agency to sign the documents, then and only then will the bridge be installed. It will be an hardwood walkway with steel support structure. Rossington has hit the national news again with the Swimming pool in the Council house garden. What can I say, apart from, "I wish I had a swimming pool!", but seriously St Leger Homes are looking at their approvals procedure and the Council are looking at the planning situation. We, in Rossington, should be proud that we have one of the lowest crime and Anti-Social Behaviour areas in Doncaster. This is thanks to the vigilance of the Police and the Safer Neighbourhood team. The Alliance, that worked so well at the Holmescarr Road and King Georges end of the village is to be repeated soon at a destination to be announced. Finally, there will be a public consultation on the Library and the options available. This will take place after the elections. The Cabinet have made Kindest Regards their decision, but it has been delayed for a year so that more consultations can take place, thanks to a stiff rearguard action by the Labour Group in negotiations that lasted months. We can't just say Richard Cooper-Holmes no and let others make a decision we have to Your Labour Councillor propose alternatives.

ossington Parish Council News The main item debated at the March meeting of the Parish Council was the D.M.B.C. Library closure programme, and how it would affect Rossington Library.

The minutes of the recently formed library preservation committee, made up of both Parish Councillors and members of the village population, were noted and approved, and the stated aim of preserving the library in Rossington in its current format and position was roundly endorsed by all members. The decision by D.M.B.C., announced on the 18th February, to postpone closure of the library for up to 12 months whilst consultations with the community took place was initially greeted with cautious optimism, but this optimism soon evaporated when further information was introduced into the debate. The attention of the Parish Council was drawn to the article written by D.M.B.C councillor Richard Cooper-Holmes which was published in the March issue of Rossington Today magazine. In this article the Councillor states quite categorically that the Rossington Library building will not close, but move to premises on the old Holmes Carr school building and operate in a different way sharing staff with a D.M.B.C. organisation called The Opportunity Centre. The Parish Council immediately rejected this situation as the stated aim of both the Parish Council and the people of Rossington is to retain the Library in its current format and position. It was pointed out that Mr. Cooper-Holmes must have written this article at least a week before the statement issued by the Mayor on the 18th February and it was possible that the Mayors statement over ruled it, but this possibility was soon discounted when the Parish Council’s attention was drawn to a letter published in the local press during the first week of March, written by Mr. CooperHolmes when he stated that the Labour group of D.M.B.C (of which he is a member) had been working quietly coming up with a deal for the libraries and working for months with the Mayor and the Chief Executive of D.M.B.C. to ensure a safe budget. After further debate and consideration of the above facts it was unanimously decided that the Parish Clerk should write to the Mayor and the Chief Executive of D.M.B.C. requesting, as a matter of some urgency, answers to the following questions. (1) Are the statements made by Councillor Cooper-Holmes correct? (2) If the answer to question 1 is in the negative will the people of Rossington led by the Parish Council be involved in serious consultations regarding the future of the village library. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Tuesday 12th April when it is hoped that we will have answers to these questions.

ickhill & District Lions

Tickhill & District Lions are holding a ‘spring clean’ car boot sale at The Oak pub in Tickhill from 9am – 1pm on Saturday the 16th of April. (Pitches are available to sellers from 8am at £5 each on a first come first served basis). So whether you’re buying, selling or just browsing please help us make our first car boot sale in a long time to be a great success. You will all be aware that Tickhill & District Lions raise money and give our time to help good causes within our community of Tickhill, Wadworth, Rossington, Harworth, Bircotes, and Bawtry. However, together with the 900 other clubs within the UK & Ireland and over 45,000 clubs worldwide, we also raise money to help those in need around the world. When we do this we are very careful to ensure that the money we donate gets directly to the people who need it. By donating money via the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) we are able to ensure that none of the money raised or donated is spent on administrative costs at any stage. The money raised and donated by Lions Clubs around the world enables the LCIF to fund long term projects such as SightFirst, which since it began in 1990 has helped save the sight of more than 30 million people worldwide. However the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan is an example of just how big an impact we can make to help when disaster strikes. Local Lions Clubs in Japan were quickly coordinating their relief efforts via social media, using the Japan Lions Office in Tokyo as emergency relief headquarters. They are working with the government and other NGOs to respond quickly and effectively, and have created a relief committee to coordinate the efforts of 107,000 Lions in Japan. The LCIF has also already mobilised US$5 million for immediate relief, with the possibility of more help to come as the situation unfolds. What makes this even more impressive is that at the time of writing it is less than 5 days after the initial earthquake. It’s only through the support of local people like you that we can help to make such an incredible impact. So thank you for all your help so far and please continue to support our fundraising efforts so we can continue to help those in need in our community and around the world.
