This is the first year that one of my children doesn’t have the long 6 week break, and won’t be joining us on our family holiday this summer, but instead has made his own arrangements for a break. It will be odd going without him, but we will be making the most of still having two wanting to holiday with Mum and Dad, although I suspect that we won’t see that much of them! August can be a slow time for lots of local shops and small businesses, with so many of their customers away on holiday, or enjoying a different routine which takes them to different shopping venues. I am sure that there are some local to you who would appreciate your support during this period (and the rest of the time too). Whatever you are doing this summer I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy a little bit of relaxation time and make some memories with your loved ones. The September issue will be delivered to you late August. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 18th August. As always I will take some time away from my computer during the school holidays so your assistance in ensuring that items are submitted on time is much appreciated. Could you give 2 hours a month to support an older person to get more out of life? Dennis is 91 and lives alone in Doncaster; his passion in life is all things football. A lot of people we support through Age UK Doncaster are safe, warm and have everything practical they need, but they are often lonely and not doing the things that matter the most to them in life. Since launching in January 2017, Circles is putting a stop to this. Circles put people at the centre of everything we do; we are about all the things that make life that little bit richer. Each Circle has a clear purpose. The purpose of Dennis’s Circle is to keep him involved in football. ‘I love football, I could talk all day about it but it’s not the same when you don’t see many people, especially those with the same interests’. Dennis was matched with

our volunteer Alex. They have since attended a charity football match together and have been reminiscing over old team photos. Other people’s Circles involve staying active, cooking or crafts, re-connecting with a faith community or starting dancing again. Circles are seeing great outcomes in Doncaster and we could not do our work without our fantastic community of volunteers here at Age UK. SAT’s ARE IN! Well, for those with school age children, you have made it. I realised this morning that the Y6 SATs results were posted. I do hope your child achieved all they wanted. However if they didn’t, DO NOT despair. I thought today over our brew we would go down a track that is equally important (if not more so in my mind) than any number on a page. It seems that all of a sudden, I am around multiple people who have decided to tackle the battle of the bulge. Regardless of whether they are GRLQJ 6OLPPLQJ :RUOG :HLJKW :DWFKHUV RU Čľ \LQJ solo, these folks have gotten stuck in and are doing amazing things. Then I got thinking ‌ What makes the truly successful person. What sets apart those who achieve from those who don’t? What is the common thread amongst the likes of Usain Bolt, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison and Bill Gates? Amongst other words, I would like to just chat about one today ‌ determination. “Eric, how does this apply to family life?â€? In every way. I realise that Bolt is built like a sprinter and Gates is insanely clever. However, there are many who are built like sprinters and are insanely clever. But those who succeed are determined. They are determined to keep their eye on the mark and achieve. It is said that Thomas Edison tried 1000 GLÎ? HUHQW HOHPHQWV RQ KLV ZD\ WR FUHDWH WKH Č´ UVW incandescent light bulb. That is determination. What is determination? Is it a gift? No. Is it natural ability? No. Can anyone achieve it? Yes. Can determination be modelled? Absolutely. Determination is more a mindset than anything else. During high school, I took to running and athletics. I wasn’t terribly coordinated to play basketball (wasn’t that tall either). I could not throw a ball with any accuracy. Football (“soccerâ€? as that word has made its way over here, huh?) was not hardly on our PE programme. I was invited to come along to something called “cross countryâ€? ‌ running on golf courses, across

streams and the like. It was hard but I liked it. I carried on during my high school years into my time at uni. I even trained with the uni club for a \HDU RU VR EXW WKH\ ZHUH RI D GLÎ? HUHQW OHDJXH DQG my engineering course was getting demanding. However I wanted to do a marathon, 26.2 miles. I knew I had to step up the training to do it but wanted to say “I did a marathonâ€?. The day came DQG Ζ ZDV IHHOLQJ Č? ZHOO EODK 7KH JXQ ZHQW RÎ? and there we went. I couldn’t believe it. I was cruising’! I was just at 2 hours for 20 miles which was unheard of for me. People said “slow down ‌ you’ll be sorryâ€?. And I was. When the 20 mile mark hit, I was wasted. Each step was agony. But I was NOT going to stop. I think I could have walked it faster. The last 6 took me as long as either of the 10 miles previous. I came in at 2:58. Fast forward now ‌ I had to get a crown on a tooth and agonised over it. My mate at work VDLG ČŠ\RXȇOO EH Č´ QHČ‹ ČŠ:KDW" Č‹ Ζ UHSOLHG ČŠ<HV KH said, the same mindset you developed from that time on the roads is the same mental toughness to get through having that crown done.â€? Determination is a mindset. It’s saying the prize at the end is worth me putting that one foot ahead of the next. It may feel like walking through treacle. So what? Put the next foot forward. It’s getting stuck into Y7 at a lower set than you would have hoped. It is going to SW or WW even though you had a bad week and gained a bit. It is going to the next AA meeting even though you feel into drinking last week. It’s cleaning your teeth that night even though you are tired. Mum, Dad, Gran, Grandpa ‌ if we can model determination in our lives, it will leave a model on how to do life to set your children on to achieving what they truly want to do. Enjoy the summer. Before long we will be saying “here we go again!â€? And as always, the door is open and the kettle is on. :)

Rossington Parish Council • August 2017 ROSSINGTON 3-DAY SUMMER FESTIVAL A huge thank you to everyone who came and supported the Parish 3-Day Summer Festival this year. Over the 3 days there was a footfall of over 5,000 which was fantastic. The overwhelming feedback from everyone has been what a great event it’s been and when is the next one. I’d like to formally thank all the Parish Cllrs and Parish Clerks who did a great job in organising the event, which as you can imagine is no mean feat. I’d also like to thank Tom Chambers and EPIC for the Zorb football and archery which was a real hit with the youngsters. Eyes lit up as soon as they saw them on the football pitch. I’d like to thank the following bands in order of appearance: Colin Robinson Band, Rock FM, Girl Talk, Dr Hackenbush and Stone Idols. Markham Main Colliery Band did a great job of opening Saturday and Sundays performances. I’d like to thank Dave Barron Bars, Sound Array 6WDJH DQG 6RXQG 7XFNHUV )XQIDLU 7RWDO (Î? H[ Security, Ben Webb, Pan Pan Medico First Aid, the market stalls and charities, and all those who contributed in making the event such a success. The EA met with Morris Metals and insisted that fogging with pesticide (a process used WR VSUD\ WKH ZDVWH WR HUDGLFDWH WKH Čľ LHV DQG disrupt their reproduction) is increased and implemented at weekends. Waste stored on site must be reduced immediately and reduced to levels agreed in their environmental permit. The EA will continue to work with Morris to PDNH VXUH WKH\ WDNH HÎ? Honeysuckle I know Wisteria is considered the king of climbers by many gardeners but surely honeysuckle must be the crown prince. The fragrance is nothing short of heavenly. It grows wild in a wood near my home and the scent stops walkers in their tracks whenever they come across it. Honeysuckle stems emerge from the ground DQG JURZ VORZO\ XSZDUGV XQWLO WKH\ Âż QG something around which to twine. At this point they romp away, scrambling up frameworks RU WUHHV GHFRUDWLQJ WKHP ZLWK VSLGHU\ Ă€ RZHUV and showering the air with that heady scent on warm summer evenings. The most common complaint I get about honeysuckle is ‘failure to thrive’. People buy one, plant it and it struggles on for a couple of years before it turns up its toes and keels over. ‘Why did that happen?’ they ask imploringly. Mostly it happens because although they are undemanding once established, honeysuckles are quite fussy about their situation. Honeysuckle prefers its roots in damp soil, not too heavy, and enriched with plenty of leaf mould. This makes perfect sense if you think DERXW WKH IRUHVW Ă€ RRU ZKHUH LW JURZV ZLOG $QG LW OLNHV LWV KHDG LQ WKH VXQ WR HQFRXUDJH SUROLÂż F Ă€ RZHULQJ I grow it like clematis - I place a couple of bits of paving over the soil that surrounds the roots to over the cool shade they require. Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors The Parish Council 3 day event held in July was a great event with bands, performers, fun fair and community groups promoting their activities as well as all the food stalls. The Parish Council had months of work into the preparation of the event and lots of hours working during the event. Well done to them for organising the event. There are lots of updates this month – so have included a few sentences on each = please do contact us if you would like further information.

Rossington Activities Programme (RAP)

Tranquil Walk Garage Site and Radburn Road backs

This fantastic 6 weeks of activities for Rossington children and young people begins on 24 July with activities starting at 10am and on some days going through until 9pm. Activities will be held at various venues throughout the village and this year we have lots more for teenagers and young adults. We have a life guard course and a rookie life guard course, an evening football league, arts, crafts, sports, street graffiti, song writing and music production, beat boxing and scooter and BMX sessions. We are delighted that the Community Library is part of RAP and the reading challenge is include and of course returning for a 2nd year is the fantastic Rossington’s Got Talent with great prizes and everyone is welcome to attend and watch and have a great night at The Welfare. We are hoping that even more children and young people take part this year – call into The Welfare to fill in your application. Details of everything that is happening is on Facebook, or you can collect booklets from lots of venues.

We have mentioned before about the ongoing work to improve the backs on the Radburn Estate but there are some sites that need urgent re-surfacing work to be done. Following complaints from residents, St Leger Homes who are responsible for the work agreed to re-surface the Tranquil Walk garage site which should be completed by the time you read this.

Fixed Penalty Notices Residents have complained before that enforcement action to tackle littering or dog fouling only takes place in the town centre but this is not the case. We have been given the figures for April – June and 14 penalty notices were issued in Rossington for littering, smoke free and vehicle litter. If there are specific areas where you feel there is a problem that needs to be tackled, do get in touch with us.

All of the activities are FREE and this is because the Parish Council have funded all the groups to put on the activities. There aren’t any other schemes like this in Doncaster, so I hope that you will support it and have a really good summer holidays doing lots of different activities.

We have mentioned the problems with lorries using the DHL site for many months now and residents have told us that whilst in the day time the DHL lorries are sticking to their agreed route, which is not through Rossington, but in the evening, this is not the case. We are demanding that DMBC’s planning enforcement, enforce the 106 agreement that is in place.

Flies, lorry park and intensification of the lorries The residents that attended the June Planning Committee were incredibly disappointed and angry that the Planning Committee agreed to allow Morris Metals to expand their operation, even though they are one of the sources ( may be the only source) of the fly problems in Rossington. The committee which was attended by only 6 members, voted 3-3 and unfortunately the Chair had the casting vote – as she had already agreed to support the expansion she said that she wouldn’t change her view and the application was passed. We are aware over the last few weeks, the fly problem has got even worse and residents are inundated with flies – even those that keep their windows and door closed. The Environment Agency in our opinion are not fit for purpose and have done nothing to protect residents 36 ROSSINGTON TODAY

As you are aware this has been an on-going problem over the last two years and the 5RVVLQJWRQ :DUG &RXQFLOORUV SDVW DQG SUHVHQW Parish Councillors and our MP have been Č´JKWLQJ WLUHOHVVO\ WR DFKLHYH D SHUPDQHQW solution by any means. We have pressured both the Environment Agency and Doncaster Council and even the Environment Minister to intervene on our behalf to end this pestilence of Flies and revolting odours. )LQDOO\ WKH ($ KDYH LGHQWLČ´HG 0RUULV 0HWDOV DV WKH PDLQ VRXUFH RI WKH ČľLHV DQG RGRXUV although Attero have some guilt to bear. The EA have issued a breach of Permit order on Morris Metals and we are once again awaiting on any legal action that should be taken. We keep contacting them, but they are still considering their legal response! This is a major blight on people’s lives and should be a First Priority by Civil Servants who have a Clear Duty to all their paymasters the British Taxpayer, YOU. Unfortunately, and misguidedly DMBC planning committee missed the opportunity to enshrine comprehensive provisions to tackle these SUREOHPV HÎ?HFWLYHO\ ZKHQ WKH\ SDVVHG D Planning application by Morris Metals late in June which had very poor and weak provisions attached, against most people’s opinion and wishes. voiced to the committee by Ward Councillors, Rossington Residents and our MP which was shamefully ignored by certain members guided by Business-centred planning regulations. As the EA are the permitting authority for these sites, it is essential, everyone experiencing WKHVH ČľLHV DQG RGRXUV UHSRUWV WKLV WR WKH ($ complaints line on 0800 80 70 60 and as these are a severe nuisance infecting our community reporting it to DMBC Environmental Health on 01302 737573 to ensure our concerns are highlighted and pressure maintained for action. 6DGO\ DV '0%&b3ODQQLQJ &RPPLWWHH KROGV Semi-judicial status, Doncaster Council cannot alter or overturn their decision. To this end, our MP Caroline Flint has been approached to contact Michael Gove, the Minister for the Environment to address our problems and seek a solution by Government. I am afraid everyone we must keep on trying and we certainly will. On a slightly better note, it is pleasing to note that Youth Services and the Youth Centre in our village may yet be secured for the future. Rossington Parish Council and Ward Councillors along with other potential partners are currently in discussions with DMBC to transfer control of the Centre to a new management organisation to expand and continue activities for our younger generation. Work is ongoing to add photographs and extra bits of information to that which has been collected by John and Rob in our team. They have each worked on pieces related to the war memorial that stands near the entrance to St Michael’s School. Originally, it was in the churchyard, and the attached photo shows its dedication when it was placed there. Some of the names on it are not people who belonged to Rossington directly, but they had some connection. Both of the team found that some names had been spelt wrongly which made it GLÉ?FXOW WR Č´QG DFFXUDWH GDWD EXW WKH\ DUH FOHDU that they have done the best they can with the information. We will publish this as we go so that we can build up the memories of those who were grandparents, or great grandparents of ours – it includes men and women.
