Welcome to the
DECEMBER 2017 edition
New producers are always welcome!
“Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but also of reflection” Winston Churchill
December already and the last magazine of 2017. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I was last writing my Christmas magazine introduction. At that time, I was preparing to move house, so we are now approaching our first anniversary of moving into our new home. Many changes have taken place, not least the removal of a couple of internal walls, and a new kitchen into that enlarged open plan space. A few more changes are planned before the year is out! The January issue will be delivered to you between Christmas and New Year. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 8th December. We do work to a slightly different time scale with this issue as they have to be printed and delivered back to me, sorted and delivered to my team of distributors before Christmas, so as always, your assistance in getting everything to me on time would be much appreciated. Wishing you and your family and friends a very Happy Christmas. Enjoy the Christmas festivities and I will be back in a months’ time with your first magazine of 2018!

Cause for a Cuppa Well we’ve blinked and another year has passed Well, passed. Christmas is here again. Let’s all try not getting caught up in the running from one event to the next. AT AGE UK DONCASTER WE BELIEVE NO ONE SHOULD HAVE NO ONE. NOT AT CHRISTMAS. NOT EVER. We believe that loneliness is not inevitable. People of all ages need connections that matter. Yet for 6,000 older people in Doncaster, loneliness is a daily reality and we don’t just mean at Christmas. A recent survey by Age UK found that nearly 400,000 people aged 65 and over in the UK were worried about being lonely over Christmas and nearly half of the UK was worried about being alone in later life.
Since launching last year, The Circles project at Age UK Doncaster is working to beat loneliness and social isolation throughout the borough. Circles help people to be happier, healthier and more connected with the support of their community. %HFDXVH HYHU\RQH LV GLÎ?HUHQW &LUFOHV work with people to understand their individual needs, passions and interests. The Christmas Wreath Until fairly recently in history, certainly up to Victorian times, people could never be certain they would safely survive the harsh winter. So, they developed rituals and displays to help them get through the darker days. One such symbolic display of hope was the Christmas wreath. The circular shape is symbolic of eternity or everlasting life because it has no beginning or end. From a Christian perspective it represents the unending circle of life, with the traditional Holly as the thorns on Jesus’ crown and the red berries as his blood. Now we hang them on our doors and use them as table centrepieces because they look wonderfully opulent and festive. The word ‘wreath’ is linked to the word ‘wrist’, both words describing the form of a continuous circular shape. This became fused with ‘wrethe’ from middle English which means a twisted band or ring of leaves. At this bleak time of year, it’s traditional to use evergreens and other brightly coloured Ă€RZHUV IROLDJH RU IUXLWV WR DGRUQ D ZUHDWK In past times the addition of expensive and rare fruits such as pomegranates, indicated wealth, but wreaths also included the display of pinecones, seashells and even imported products. Once the decorations were taken 28 ROSSINGTON TODAY
down, the edible parts would be eaten and the bounty of summer could be enjoyed in the depth of winter. Making a wreath is fun and relatively easy. You can make a simple and cheap evergreen circle or push the boat out and create an elaborate bauble ring. You can buy a ring of ÀRZHU DUUDQJHUVœ IRDP 6RDN LW LQ WHSLG ZDWHU and then stick sprigs of evergreen foliage from WKH JDUGHQ ÀRZHUV EHUULHV GULHG IUXLWV QXWV and bows into it using wire if necessary. Or you can make your own base by taking a ring of string wire and covering it in moss or hay. This will need to be held in place using thinner gauge wire. You can then wire in foliage and decorations. I will just warn you about holly though; working with it can be a painful experience so wear gloves and maybe have a box of plasters handy! If you want to try something different you can use a circle of pine cones, dried leaves, threaded popcorn and cranberries or woven red and yellow dogwood cut from your garden DQG LQWHUZHDYHG ZLWK EDWWHU\ RSHUDWHG OLJKWV Use your gardener’s imagination.
Happy Christmas gardening.

ROSSINGTON REMEMBERS This month we have decided to report on our Remembrance Day service. Every year, Mr Porter, our Year 6 teacher and other members of the Salvation Army, together with the British Legion, organise a Remembrance Service at the cenotaph outside our school. This year, the service was held on the bright and blustery morning of Friday 10th November. All the Rossington schools were invited to attend as well as members of the Salvation Army, the British Legion and the local community. $OWKRXJK WKLV VHUYLFH ZDV Č´UVW KHOG PDQ\ years ago, it has grown in popularity and this year it was very moving to share it with even more schools and members of the community. We are extremely proud of all
November has been a busy month in terms of catching up on a backlog of uploads and photos to be added to the website. It has also been our Annual General Meeting, and from that, a plan has been made of what we will be doing in the coming year. There are photos still to add to some of our existing articles, but with a small team, this is one of those tasks that continues to take time. We give priority to photos or articles sent or given to us by those outside the team, and we welcome any such items. 38 ROSSINGTON TODAY
the children who attended, they behaved in a respectful manner throughout the ceremony. Children from Rossington St Michael’s CE Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School performed poems and prayers throughout the service. At the tolling of the church bells, Mr Porter, our year 6 teacher, played the ‘Last Post’ and we all paused for the two minute silence. At the conclusion of this, prayers were heard from a member of the British Legion and also from Rev. John Xavier Leal. At the end of the service, wreaths were laid by representatives of all the schools in attendance and also by members of the British Legion. We would like to thank all who attended and who made this service so memorable. Thank you for reading our report.
The last year has seen us focus on the Past part of our aim, but we have also touched on the Present and Future views of Rossington, and will continue to do so. More is to follow about our plan for 2018, and one of our members, John, is giving a free taster session at Holmescarr aimed at those who would like to know how to gather their family history, or expand on what they have already gathered, and, like Bryan Royle, whose personal family story is already on the website, we hope to hear IURP WKRVH ZKR ȴQG RXW PRUH RI WKHLU IDPLO\ DQG ZDQW WR VKDUH LW 7KH ȴUVW VHVVLRQ LV IUHH so you have nothing to lose by going along. Have you got anything – photos or stories – past and present - that you would like to share on the website or appear in the Library? We would love to hear from more of you who have memories that are on tape or are written so that they can go on record. If you have not got that far, we can take recordings of those memories. Update from Councillors
Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors Over the last few weeks, we have tried to focus our attention on those issues which just do not seem to go away. On some of them we are now just fed up with trying to achieve any headway and we will be seeking legal advice on what the way forward is. We have tried the ‘be patient and talking bit’ but this approach is going nowhere. We had hoped that the pressure that our combined efforts was applying would have been sufficient to stimulate some progress but we now need to kick start this in a different direction.
this out. I have to reiterate that this is only a partial temporary fix as the line of the underground pipe is to be altered. Part of the existing drain will be under part of the new buildings so it is to be realigned via the installation of a new pipe. This is scheduled to take place in January/February 2018. Given the timescales involved I have stressed the urgency of trying to kick start the flow in the existing drain to give the woodland some respite from the effects of the flooding. The works to carry this out involves major expenditure so we are grateful to Harworth Estates for their attempts to correct this problem.
Bankwood Lane We reported in our last article that the Continued pressure from Rossington Residents and Elected Members was finally reaping some reward in terms of progress on a new link road into part of the Bankwood Estate. To date, there is no update on this project nor does there seem to be any indication of when the planning application may be submitted. This will be one of our priorities over the next few weeks so we can deliver an update to you all via the pages of our ‘Rossington Today’ magazine. It’s all gone very quiet but this does happen on a planning application of this size
Radburn Estate Grass clean up A ‘Greener Cleaner’ day has just taken place on the Radburn estate to remove numerous piles of rubbish that had been deposited on various open space areas. This work will continue and I hope that Residents of the areas concerned will help us by ensuring that anyone who tries to get rid of their rubbish in this way is reported. Three new double litter and dog waste bins have been installed as part of this work and the single one at the Radburn Shops has been replaced with a double bin. We are most grateful to Martyn Day and Ian Wigglesworth of DMBC together with all of their staff who actually carried out the on-site work for their ongoing efforts on behalf of the village.
DHL Lorries through the village. Despite assurances from the Management of DHL, the lull in the Lorry traffic from their establishment has now been reversed and the passage of the vehicles associated with this facility is now at what can only be described as ‘Epidemic Level’. Mick followed a lorry himself earlier this week along the link road into the village and the rear wheels mounted the kerb at the Styrup traffic island as he was travelling in the direction of the DHL depot. It is the responsibility of the Depot Management to monitor and prevent this but it appears that they are virtually powerless to enforce the direction which the lorries travel in. More importantly, it is the case that many of the lorries are not stopping for the Schools Crossing Patrol officer for St Michaels. Whilst they are not duty bound to stop we find their conduct deplorable and in keeping with their arrogance in the daily flouting of the routing agreement. If talking to the management cannot alleviate this issue then we will now consider a different course of action through which results can be achieved. Thanks to the efforts of certain residents we are in receipt of several pages of information relating to the registration numbers of vehicles and these will form part of our next course of action in respect of DHL. Holmescarr Wood. A meeting has now taken place with Duncan Armstrong-Payne from Harworth Estates to discuss the way forward on the woodland drainage problem. Over 50% of the underground drainage pipe has now been cleaned out and whilst the outlet flow is not back to normal it is starting to move. The level of water in the woodland has stopped rising but at the same time it is not receding. Harworth estates have now identified exactly where the problem area is and attempts are ongoing to clean 40 ROSSINGTON TODAY
Traffic issues We are advised that there is to be a prohibition of traffic order on Kier Hardie Avenue due to the commencement of Gas service renewal works. This is to come into force on the 27th November until 15th December 2017 or until the works have been completed. Carol Concert Memorial Hall. Rossington Parish Council is working in collaboration with our Rossington Churches and St Michael’s School Orchestra to put their first Carol Concert on at the Memorial Hall at 4pm on Wednesday 13th December 2017. Surgeries Micks next surgery will be as follows.
