Already Christmas seems like a distant memory, the decorations are back in the loft and with any luck the tree has been chopped up, popped in your green bin and taken away with your garden waste. I’d decided to be organised and remember to book a council collection of mine this year – only to find out that they weren’t doing them. Best laid plans! One month into the year, I wonder how many resolutions have already been given up on? Apparently most have been abandoned in little over a week, with ladies managing a few days longer than men! That is why I chose this month’s quote, after all, there must be a reason why New Year’s resolutions have been made and I guess how long we maintain the activity we have resolved to do, will depend on the strength of the reason for starting. Of course plans for change can be made at any time, so no reason why those abandoned resolutions, can’t be picked back up at any time. Sometimes easier said than done!

Beauty & the Beast Rossington Parish Council’s Christmas Pantomime was a great success with Doncaster based Talegate Theatre Company performing Beauty and the Beast. The Memorial Hall was packed to the rafters with excited screaming children and adults who’s sides were aching from laughing. Volunteers put on food, drinks and refreshments with all proceeds going to the Memorial Hall Charity. Santa’s Grotto was a great success where all children got a selection box from Santa and his little helper. Watch out for the next Pantomime. Due to this year’s high demand and because the Parish doesn’t want to let any local children down, there will be 2 showings this year, 2 pm and 6 pm on Saturday 2 December 2017 at the Memorial Hall where the Talegate Theatre Company are performing Dick Wittington. Put the date in your diaries. Tickets will be available from the Parish 2É? FH LQ 1RYHPEHU If you would like to share your thoughts on Beauty and Beast please post them on our Facebook Page - Rossington Parish Council 2016. 6

Cause for a Cuppa! Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa! It is really humbling to hear of people who enjoy turning to our little visit together when you get this magazine. Your comments are very kind. However, there is nothing special about what I say. I reckon everyone puts their trousers on one leg at a time (unless you are really gifted or you don’t wear trousers!) and the life things I experience are probably not too far distant from \RXUV 6R Ζ Č´ JXUH LI \RX FDQ OHDUQ IURP P\ PLVWDNHV and experiences as I’m trying to, then it is a win-win. Well, as we are now properly into 2017, February EULQJV DORQJ WKDW GD\ WKDW Čľ RULVWV DQG FKRFRODWH makers love ‌ Valentine’s Day. You can almost be assured there will be a run on rose bouquets, Thornton’s boxes and greeting cards by the time 14 February comes and goes. My 18 year old friend had a Christmas job at The Works who tells the story of Dads who, in the last minute Christmas panic were scrambling for pressies for the wife ‌ asking him for advice. What a hoot! At least Valentine’s Day isn’t too complicated. What I look forward to is hearing comments from school children about their love interests. The comments from 6 year old “Mâ€? However, he did have ginger hair (so I almost made the cut). His name was Leroy. Leroy was one of those who changed girlfriends about as often as I changed my socks. There must have been some sort of circular rota set up. He would go from Debbie ‌ to Heather ‌ to Kirsten ‌ to Amy and at some point make his way back to Debbie, and so forth. Well, I know he married Debbie because I was at the wedding and THINK 35 years on he is still married to her. Good on him!

b

On that note, I’d like to have a word with all us married folk. We all know children and grandchildren pick up far more by what they see than by what they hear. The old adage, “actions speak louder than wordsâ€? has proven itself to me over and over again. But you know, the street runs two ways. Actions from our children speak far louder than what they say. My favourite little saying at the house is “I don’t necessarily want to hear ‘I’m sorry’ ‌ I want to see it!â€? But having said that, I guess my question is to all XV ZKR KDYH DQ LQČľ XHQFH RQ RWKHUV UHJDUGLQJ “how to do a relationshipâ€?. Are we committed to the person we said “I doâ€? to those years ago. Do the words “I love youâ€? mean more than just words containing 8 letters in total. Do your children/ grandchildren have an example to emulate? I know there is no “perfectâ€? relationship. Of course not. All couples fall out and have heated discussions. Sure, there are times and reasons that relationships should not carry on. But strong relationships require work, time and commitment. Actually the telltale mark on the strength of a relationship is how you ZRUN WKURXJK WKRVH GLÉ? FXOW PRPHQWV ΖI ZH DUH WRR TXLFN WR SXOO XS VWDNHV DQ\ DQG HYHU\ WLPH GLÉ? FXOWLHV happen, that speaks volumes to those young hearts who are watching. More often than not, that will be the pattern they will follow in their own relationships. As a last word, be mindful about “emotional divorceâ€?. Most marriages are over long before WKH\ OHJDOO\ Č´ QLVK $JDLQ D VWURQJ UHODWLRQVKLS needs time invested, creativity to keep the Čľ DPHV RQ DQG DJDLQ FRPPLWPHQW WKURXJK the rough patches. And their favourite “thingâ€? on Valentine’s Day doesn’t hurt either. ;) As always, the door is always open and the kettle always on. Have a fab day and we’ll see you next month all being well.

Community Hello and a Happy New Year from us all at Mayflower Sanctuary We have had an amazingly busy Christmas and all our kennels are full to overflowing. However the kennel assistants have worked really hard ensuring all of our residents both cats and dogs enjoyed everything Santa had brought for them. We have had an absolutely fantastic influx of presents, food, blankets, towels, toys, also biscuits and chocolates for the staff everything will make life so much easier for everyone. So a very big thank you to everyone that has contributed. You are all amazing people. When we are out and about collecting for the Sanctuary I often hear people say, we only give to people not to animals! I understand we all have an opinion and a choice which is good. However over the last year we have helped many people taking their beloved pets and re-homing them when they can no longer take care of them. It could be that people have to go into care or hospital or even move out of their homes or fall onto hard times. Even though it is very sad to have to give up your pet if you know it will be very much taken care of its something less to worry about. We like to think we are helping not only animals but people too.

This brings me on to one dog that we have with us at the moment called Roxanne she is a beautiful long coated Shepherd who is 7 years old and her owner is no longer able to take care of her. If you would like

Finding a forever home meet her please pop along and we will be happy to introduce her. We have some dogs and cats that have been with us quite some time. One such dog that I can think of is Dash who is a white Lurcher and very pretty, he has been with us 2 years. He is 3 years old a little nervous with strangers but once he is confident around you he would make a lovely pet. Also with us is a Malamute which is a very specialist breed, his name is Teddy and just 1 year old. If you are not familiar with this breed please take a look on the internet to find out more. We have a Race Night arranged for Sat the 11th Feb at Misson Community Centre, Vicar Lane, Misson. Tickets are £5 which includes pie and peas. There is a bar and the door open at 7pm Tickets are available from Sarah 01302 711285/07905017525 or Viv 01302711946 / 07971452248. Please come along and join us last time we had an event like this it was such fun and very successful. If you are looking for that special pet and would like any more details of our cats and dogs that are on the internet please pop along and take a look around our Sanctuary we will be happy to have a chat. Telephone 01302711330 for any further help you may require. Hope to see you soon Bye for now

Name: Lucy Female Sex: Date into care: FEB 2015 Age: 6 years Good with dogs: No Good with cats: No Good with children: Older Lucy came to Mayflower as her owner was getting unsteady on his feet and Lucy thought it was fun to weave around his legs !! She can be a feisty madam at times and likes to set the rules with regard to levels of fussing which she will tolerate. She loves to be stroked but doesn’t like her belly or tail to be touched. Lucy is NOT a lap-cat. If you look carefully you will notice that she is a polydactyl cat which means she has extra toes. This doesn’t hinder her in any way and she can do all the things that ‘normal’ toed cats can do. Lucy is just unique

Name: Mac & Morris Males Sex: Date into care: Mar 16 Age on arrival: 18 Months Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: Yes Lived with children: Yes Mac & Morris are brothers who have found themselves looking for a new home due to a change in their owners circumstances. They used to live in a pub but when the Brewery moved their family to London they felt that it wouldn’t be safe for the boys and asked Mayflower to help them find a new home. They can be timid on first meeting but they are very loving once they get to know you. All they need is a little patience for their true personalities to come shining through. A home together is essential. (P.S - Morris has the white hairs on his chest !)

Compost Angst Home-made compost is a thing of wonder... when all goes well! But too often it goes horribly wrong and instead of rich, sweet, crumbly stuff we end up with a putrefying heap. For a long time I believed making great compost was beyond me. There are so many methods and myths, it all seemed too complicated. Well good news...it isn’t!

Compost containers You can make your own. It’s very easy DSSDUHQWO\ XVLQJ ROG À RRUERDUGV SRVWV DQG wire netting. Unfortunately I am to DIY what elephants are to hang gliding so I opt for ready made bins. Check with your council as many offer cheap bins to encourage recycling. If not, garden centres stock a good variety. Size matters! A container should be 3 ft / 1m square minimum, preferably larger. This allows heat to build up inside the heap which aids the decay process. Position it out of the main line of sight, behind a shed or some tall plants. Compost materials • Fruit and veg scraps • Coffee grounds and tea bags • 2OG À RZHUV DQG EHGGLQJ SODQWV • Garden clippings • Annual weeds • Crushed egg shells • Small animal bedding (e.g. rabbit) • Shredded cardboard, including tubes • Egg cartons • Lawn mowings

24 ROSSINGTON TODAY

You can’t use: • Food waste (bread, meat etc.) • Cat and dog faeces • Evergreen leaves • Thick rooted perennial weeds How to make compost I’ve tried several methods, including my late grandfather’s which involved careful layers of various ingredients and sprinkling on lime at intervals. It worked, but I’m a lazy gardener really and can’t be bothered with all the faff. This my method, worked out through a combination of trial error (lots of error!) • Mix all material together so there is no concentration of any one sort • Firm it all down, • Moisten it • Cover it with some old carpet to keep heat in and prevent evaporation If you start the process now, by Autumn you’ll be digging in your very own wonderful compost, dragged from the bottom of your heap. You’ll have done your bit for recycling and best of all...it’s free! TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake It is always good to start the year with a resident attending my surgery to tell me that after months of asking, the man hole cover that was causing such a problem for residents on Sheepbridge Lane has finally been repaired. The re-development of the pit top, and the cleaner, greener day in Rossington are all included below. Firstly, a couple of ongoing problems for residents and the most up to date information I have (at the time of writing) Bankwood Lane The retrospective planning application for the lorry park has still not been decided due to more information being required from Attero. The planning officer was expecting this information from them in the middle of January, after which there will be further consultation. Residents contacted me about the for sale sign that had appeared on the lorry park. I contacted the planning officer and he wasn’t able to say why this had happened but that this was something the landowner could do. In addition Morris Metals have amended their proposal to include lorry parking within the site, odour spray attenuation equipment, revised boundary screening to the site, revised site compound. If I receive any information about Bankwood Lane, I pass this onto residents whose contact details I have – if you would like me to include you in these updates, please do let me know. Weekend working – I was informed about this and action is being taken – further details will be in my March update. Sheepbridge Lane and HGVs As mentioned in my introduction, the manhole cover that was causing a big problem for residents has finally been repaired. I was told initially that Severn Trent had looked at the problem and repaired 2 others on the road but the large one wasn’t a problem! I asked the Drainage engineer to meet myself and a resident at the manhole to make sure we were talking about the same man-hole as I had heard for myself the noise it was making. He agreed to ask again and finally they agreed to repair it. Whilst this problem has been sorted, some DHL lorries have started to use this road again – it has been suggested that this is due to the diversion at the Blyth roundabout onto the A1 – the route that is supposed to be taken. With most diversions, the diversion allows for HGVs so I have asked the planning enforcement officer to find out from DHL 28 ROSSINGTON TODAY

DMBC Councillor

why the diversion isn’t being followed. Pit Top Development I was pleased to be at the Parish Council meeting when Harworth Estates attended to outline plans for carrying on the re-development of the pit top. It was reassuring to hear them commit to completing the project and that they have the money to do this. Also that they will be completing the car park, and memorial garden, the bridleway will be reopened along with the permissive pathways. The work will be done in 4 phases, each lasting one year. Finally, they recognise that it is village residents who have had to put up with problems for a long time and the work will be starting on this side, rather than near the new houses. The planning application is available to view on DMBC’s planning portal http://planning.doncaster.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails. do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=OFRENSFX05N00 Cleaner, Greener Day in Rossington It was great to see DMBC’s staff, community groups and residents working together to tidy up the village, removing dumped rubbish and tidying up green spaces. As I have mentioned before, DMBCs street scene usually respond quickly when I ask for work to be completed and improvements made – please let me know of any areas that you feel would benefit from work. Surgery My next surgery will be on: Friday 10 February from 12.15 – 1.45pm at the café at the Holmescarr Centre and from 3-430 at Miners Welfare, West End Lane. Please don’t wait for my surgeries to get in touch. Please contact me on: Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael. blake@doncaster.gov.uk As always, I am involved in lots of different work in the village, some on behalf of individual residents to resolve their problems and concerns and others that are of benefit to the whole village, such as the work I am doing with community groups to plan for this summer’s holiday activities. If there are any aspects of my work that you would like more details on, please do not hesitate to contact me; or if there are new problems that need solving, I look forward to hearing from you. Kind regards

We have written to the Mayor expressing the FRQFHUQV ZH KDYH DQG WKH QHHG IRU WUDÉ?F calming measures, as well as the need for Pedestrian crossings especially on West End lane, as well as parking during peak times of the day around school times, we have arranged meetings with all Ward Councillors to GLVFXVV WKHVH LVVXHV ZLWK RÉ?FHUV DW '0%& With the opening of the new road “The Great Yorkshire Wayâ€?, we have written to the companies on Bankwood as well as the transport operators to please refrain from entering the village via Parrots corner and up Sheepbridge lane, and instead follow the new signs requested by us and soon to be erected, down to the iPort, and enter via this route.
