Melody Beattie Those of you who know me and my family personally will know that my daughter was at Manchester Arena on the night of the terrorist attack. We will forever be thankful that she and her friends came home safely to their families that night, when so many will never be able to do so. In the days that followed we received large numbers of calls and messages from so many friends and the love, care and support was very much appreciated. July brings the end of another school year and all of the activities associated with this period. I have many happy memories of sports days, end of year concerts and preparations for moving to the next stage of life. For another of my children, this year it is the end of school life and another set of A Level results is awaited! The August issue will be delivered to you late July. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Wednesday 12th July.

Time is a teacher! Cause for a Cuppa!

Time is an amazing teacher. I was reading something just today that really struck me. A grandfather was talking with his granddaughter. He said, “I have gone from horse and buggy to people walking on the moonâ€?. “Really grandpa, how exciting!â€?, his granddaughter exclaimed. Her grandfather looked out into the distance and said, “Yes, I never thought it would be so shortâ€?. I wonder if there is a way for me to know how many times it has been said by someone in Rossington, “it only seemed two minutes agoâ€?. Have you said it? I know I have. Here’s the fascinating bit. I can’t remember people ever saying it in relation to their jobs. Houses ‌ maybe. Cars ‌ possibly (if you’re a bloke). But where is comes out is MAINLY in relation to their family and ESPECIALLY their children. This grandfather realised something that hits us all ‌ the fact that time moves (usually quickly) on whether we want it to or not. We can safely assume the bulk of people who read this have (or have had) children. I remember hearing WKH OLWWOH TXLS XSRQ KDYLQJ WKH Č´ UVW H[SHULHQFH RI having grandchildren over to the house for a bit. “Wow, if I knew being a grandparent was going WR EH WKLV JRRG Ζ ZRXOG KDYH GRQH WKLV Č´ UVW Č‹ Yeah, it is funny. But I started thinking about my own journey as a parent over the last 30 years or so. Of our 3 children, not a one was what I called a “good sleeperâ€?. I sometimes hear stories of “oh, yeah, little Kallum slept from 10pm-7am from the time he was 6 weeks oldâ€?. What?! Can I call “foul?!â€? Our youngest was the most challenging as he had baby colic with many hours pacing back and forth trying to settle him. I wished for that time to be done and dusted as I felt like a zombie (we both shared that load). Then we hit the 2-3 year bracket. Oh there were the cute times and watching them learn to walk. But along with that was the ability to get into Messy Church (3:30-5:30) Tuesday (11 July) ONE DAY ONLY We are asking ÂŁ1 pp to help with costs. iShine (3:45-5:00) Tues (4, 18 July) Subs - ÂŁ1pp All Welcome Sunday ...10.30am Holmescarr Centre

anything and everything. How is it possible for a chocolate biscuit to get stuck in a radiator like that? I moaned for that time to be over so cleanup wouldn’t be such a chore. Primary school age came along with the ever present trek to school ‌ and back. Would this never end? Well it did. Ah, high school. They can sort themselves out (mostly). Making this pack up every morning is a hassle. Excuse me, young man (or woman). Who is it that brought you into this world? Who pays for all your earthly goods INCLUDING your games and phone? When will this attitude end? Surely some day! 8QLYHUVLW\ <HV Ζ NQRZ LWȇV MXVW WR 6KHÉ? HOG EXW WKH WUHN EDFN DQG IRUWK Č? OXJJLQJ WKH VWXÎ? XSVWDLUV &DQȇW ZDLW for the lift. It takes forever. Then in a couple of months, we’ll doing it all again. Can’t wait until this is over. Well, they’ve got their own place and experience “big peopleâ€? issues and problems. Where did the time go? It was just 2 minutes, wasn’t it? Was holding our little ones as babies, trying to comfort them all that bad? No. Cleaning chocolate biscuits behind the rad ‌ in the big picture not a big deal. Well, you get the picture. Fetching up 2 and 1/2 children (last one nearly in Y9), it was easy to (even secretly) wish away all those times. Sure, many were challenging. But they are all part of growing up. I had to learn NOT to wish them away. With each stage, there were the nice bits and the challenging bits. Certainly as they all grew up, they were watching how I dealt with the challenging bits. Sure enough they now copy me ‌ good, bad or ugly. As it is often said, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Parents, grandparents, etc ‌ July is the start of the 6 weeks holidays. The recent Manchester and London atrocities help bring a bit of perspective. Don’t wish away this opportunity. Make a memory. Do something special. Tackle a challenge. And as always, the door is open and the kettle is on. :)

community Garden View

By Rachel Leverton

Take a seat This year I decided to buy an all-weather seat for my garden. Bizarrely I didn’t actually have a permanent place to sit where I could admire my hard work. There is an art to choosing and placing garden seating. First decide whether you want to sit in full sun, or dappled shade. Watch the path of the sun and make a note of which particular parts of the garden are illuminated at each time of day. Think about when you will sit in you garden. Will you want to eat breakfast out there? If so pop a seat and little table in a spot which catches the morning sun. If like many of us the only chance you get to sit out is during the evening then look for an area which is bathed in golden light of late afternoon. Would you like to dine out doors in the evening? Can you make room for a table, and would a patio heater be a good investment, so you can make the most of the setting. If the only area you can place a bench is in baking sun then it’s good to place some sort of overhead structure. It can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Sawn tanalised timbers can be used to make a very simple frame over which you can train a vine or climber. Use galvanised screws and it should last 20 years, providing a delightful place to rest. Choose all-weather furniture for ease of use unless you have oodles of storage space for the winter months. Plastic is cheap but can look very tacky. There are some wonderful synthetic wicker style pieces available now though, and excellent metal furniture which requires no care at all.

My favourite material is wood though mostly this does require ongoing maintenance. I did discover some rather attractive polystyrene slatted furniture on an aluminium frame which looked remarkably like the real deal. ,I ¿ QDQFHV DOORZ \RX FDQ EX\ EHDXWLIXO WHDN wood furniture which requires very little in the way of after care. Try before you buy! Yes you want your furniture to look wonderful but the most important factor is comfort. Are the seats wide enough? Is there enough back support? Does it come with pads? Finally, to bring a touch of indoor comfort and style to an outdoor area I discovered outdoor rugs! Yes really. Made from longlasting material, outdoor rugs can cope with rain or shine. They are made from robust, UHVLVWDQW HDV\ FDUH V\QWKHWLF ¿ EUHV ZKLFK absorb minimal moisture and which dry quickly afterwards. They don’t fade even when exposed to bright sunlight and are cleaned easily by vacuuming, with a broom, or by beating them. I was a sceptic, but I think I’m a convert and bought a little one to place in front of my bench. My dog loves it!

Community Rossington Parade and Community Arts Project Look out for activities organised by the team during the coming months. We are attending some of the events organised by other organisations over the summer, doing some craft work and we will be encouraging everyone to join in. We will be at the Welfare on 16 July and Holmescarr on 25 July, and again in August. We are linking in to a Doncaster-wide initiative where doves will be the key feature, and our craft activities at these will pick up on the theme of peace – something we all wish for in the light of recent events, we are sure. We are also hosting a taster session for budding poets of any age, of those who love to read or listen to poetry. This will be at Holmescarr in the café at 4 pm on 12 July. The session will be led by professional poet, Ian Parks, and he hopes that Rossington will respond in the same way as Balby and Mexborough, so that it can become a regular meeting place for literary talent. Right Up Our Street has asked the team to host an event in September, and more of that in our next update, but it sounds as though it will be fun, and they will be working locally on the content of it. All we can say just now is that it will be out of the ordinary! We look forward to your joining us to help with our projects. Contact us via Facebook, or on 07899 805247 (Sharon) or 07771 672561 (Elaine) for information of our next meeting. We meet at Holmescarr from 6pm once a month.

ENHANCEMENTS TO CHILD A MESSAGE OF THANKS FROM CONCESSIONARY TRAVEL CAROLINE FLINT The enhancements mean that from 1 July ALL 16 to 18 year olds living in South Yorkshire, including those in apprenticeships and employment, will be able to apply for a 16-18 Travel Pass, which provides access to discounted travel across the region.

7KH SDVV ZLOO DOVR IRU WKH Č´ UVW WLPH EH YDOLG GXULQJ $XJXVW WR DOORZ \RXQJ SHRSOH LQ WKLV DJH EUDFNHW WR EHQHČ´ W IURP reduced travel rates, including 80p single fares on bus and tram, half price rail fare on Northern rail services and value for money operator tickets all year round. The changes have been made in response to customer feedback, and to better support young people to access learning, training, employment and other opportunities beyond existing academic boundaries. The 16-18 Travel Pass can be applied for from 1 July, online at travelsouthyorkshire.com, or via a paper application from an Interchange, and can be used as soon as it is received. Unlike the previous 16-18 Student Pass, card holders are no longer required to reapply for their pass after a year, as the enhanced 16-18 Travel Pass is valid for two years, until 31 July of the young person’s second year in further education, apprenticeship or employment. Prior to the enhancements, only 16-18 year olds in full time education, or classroom based learning over 12 hours per week, were entitled to a 16-18 Student Pass and the concessionary fare entitlement for 16-18 year olds was in line with the academic year meaning it ended each year on 31 July, and recommenced on 1 September and there were often delays receiving these passes as they could not be applied for until schools and colleges were able to give out application codes to their students once registration for the year ahead had been completed - after exam results received in August. 7KHVH FKDQJHV ZLOO PDNH D UHDO GLÎ? I want to place on record my thanks to you the voters of Don Valley for re-electing me as your Member of Parliament on 8 June. During a hectic seven week election campaign, I have lost count of the words of good wishes and warmth I have received. Amid the pressure of an election campaign, those messages spurred me on. This is the sixth occasion you have placed your faith in me. I will work hard to honour that support by remaining a hands-on constituency MP and a strong national voice for the towns and villages of Don Valley. Residents made quite clear their worries over crime and anti-social behaviour; over the pressures on our NHS and the prospect of further funding cuts to local schools. I will stand up for PRUH SROLFH RÉ? FHUV DQG RXU VFKRROV and health services to ensure all Don Valley families feel safer and receive the best education and healthcare. I will continue to campaign for a cross party solution to the future provision of social care. Above all, I will continue to support more jobs and investment across Doncaster to provide good opportunities for local people to get work and get on in life. Key to this will be working to secure a good deal for Doncaster as we leave the European Union. It has been an honour to serve as your MP for twenty years and my commitment to Don Valley’s communities remains as strong as the GD\ Ζ ZDV Č´ UVW HOHFWHG 7KDQN \RX DJDLQ for your support. Update from Councillors

Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors

As I am writing this, it’s the weekend after the general election and we are very pleased that our MP Caroline Flint has been re-elected. She has supported many residents and community groups over the last 20 years and will continue to do so for the next 5 years or whenever the next general election is called as many of the commentators suggested on this weekend’s political programmes it might be sooner than 5 years. Caroline holds monthly surgeries across the constituency, with one here in the village at The Welfare. Whilst we deal with local issues, Caroline is available to deal with all other issues that you may need assistance with. As always, we have provided an update on work that we have been involved in or are helping to spread the word about by mentioning it in our update.

Rossington Activities Programme (RAP) We are just finalising the publicity for this which will be going into all schools at the beginning of July. In addition all the groups providing activities will be at the 3 day Festival organised by Rossington Parish Council – we will be there on the Saturday and Sunday so please come along and ensure your children can get involved – all the activities are free (a couple of the fun days will be charging for food) and there will be something to appeal to all ages. Last year, some parents said that they didn’t know anything about the activities so their children missed out - do contact us if you don’t receive information from your child’s school and we will be happy to send something to you.

FARRS 2 Work will be commencing shortly on the development of FARRS 2, connecting Parrots corner to the airport. Notification has been issued about the closure of a bridleway in the area due to the works commencing and there are proposed changes to the 40mph and 50mph zones in the vicinity. The road layout will be changing around Parrots Corner. We will keep you updated as the scheme progresses.

Holmescarr Wood Rachael has mentioned this before in her update and explained that due to the flooding in the wood,

40 ROSSINGTON TODAY

Harworth Estates would be using equipment to find out where the blockage is. The last conversation that Rachael had with them was that they had detected the problem which was to do with tree roots blocking the water flowing. They have decided that the best way to deal with this problem is to divert the water flow which is something that they are going to be doing but not until July/August. Rachael told them that she was very concerned about the impact that the flooding was having on the area and the impact on fauna and flora, as well as it being a safety concern with the school holidays starting soon, Harworth Estates have said that they have completed a risk assessment and don’t believe it is a risk in terms of flooding to houses – unfortunately the Environment Agency like all Government bodies have lost considerable funding and therefore only prioritise the most urgent cases. That said, they will be doing the work to change the direction of the water flow and hopefully in next month’s update there will be some progress on this.

Bankwood Lane expansion Over 30 residents attended DMBCs planning committee on 30 May where Attero’s lorry park and the expansion of Morris Metals was discussed. Residents were supported by Rachael and Caroline Flint and John Cooke. Before the meeting, a peaceful protest was held outside civic offices to make passers-by aware of the problems that they are experiencing. Reporters from TRAX FM and Radio Sheffield came to the protest so it was a good opportunity for residents to make their voices heard on how their lives have been blighted. The decision by the Planning Committee on both applications was to defer a decision and instead arrange a visit to both sites which should have taken place by the time you read this. Whatever the outcome of the planning committee, many residents believe that waste recycling should not be taking place so close to resident’s houses impacting on resident’s health and a residents group is being formed which all residents are welcome to be involved in – the group is being supported by councillors.

Next Surgery Friday 7 July from 12.30-2 at the café in the Holmescarr Centre 2.30 – 3.30 at The Welfare Rachael Tel: 07976896563 Email: Rachael.blake@doncaster.gov.uk Mick Tel: 07758089737 Email: mick.cooper@doncaster.gov.uk Thank you for reading our update – please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Kindest regards, Rachael and Mick
