ause for a Cuppa
Come on in today! I hope you are having a good day or will have a good day. I read a story that made me laugh and reminded me of … well … me. One day a young lad was watching his dad sitting at the dinner table. He suddenly noticed that a number of grey strands poking up in his normal dark head of hair. He looked at his dad and asked, "Why are some of your hairs white, Dad?" The father replied, "Well, every time that you do something naughty and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white." The young lad thought about this revelation for a while and then said, "OK, but how come ALL of Nana’s hairs are white?" Ah … the sometimes brutal honesty of children! I love being a Dad. I don’t think there is anything else I have ever done that has brought such highs AND lows in my life. I’ve recently been confronted with something that made me visit not BEING a Dad but HAVING a Dad. I have discovered something through Cause for a Cuppa that my experiences and challenges are not unique to me. I have also learned that enough people are being helped to make it worth the risk of opening up my personal life. You may have noted that I have rarely or never mentioned my own father. He and mum split up when I was 10. Though it was at a time when divorce was uncommon, the worst part was that he disappeared out of our lives entirely. As a lad of ten (oldest boy in our family), I felt lost. Mum was great and did all she could and beyond, but it just wasn’t the same. With mum’s passing, Father’s Day in June and my journey of understanding of “Choose Life” (mentioned before in Cause), I challenged myself to try and find where he is and write. It was a very strange experience. The letter sits beside me now, ready to be posted. I found his address though a cousin (I didn’t know I had) on Facebook. It is a simple letter … opening up a door of opportunity to him but mostly asking “why?”. I have no idea what the results will be. Are you in a similar boat? If so, why not try this with me and let’s see what develops. The worst scenario is … nothing happens … and I have prepared myself for the possibility. But it could open a door of a developing relationship. In any case, I wanted to wish all the Dads a very happy Father’s Day! You are vital in your children’s lives! ost Chord, based in Maltby is a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and wellbeing, of people living in residential homes and struggling with dementia, by helping them to communicate through the power of music, song and dance. By using interactive musical sessions our professional musicians strive to stimulate those areas of the brain which are still responding for those who may be unable to walk, talk, feed themselves or communicate in any way Lost Chord relies totally on grant funding and voluntary donations to help affect the lives of thousands of sufferers living in residential homes. We currently organise more than 1100 musical sessions a year in over 100 venues on the scheme. This includes 13 residential homes in the Doncaster region affecting the lives of hundreds of people in your community. The evidence of the power of live music in unlocking memories for people with dementia is striking and undeniable and their sense of achievement is overwhelming. This helps confirm clinical evidence that there are certain areas of the brain associated with music that remain potentially responsive, when all other areas have deteriorated. Our achievements: Some who are unable to communicate speak for the first time in months Some who have not spoken for some time often sing all the words to familiar songs. Some with aggressive tendencies can become visibly calmed. Those who are confused and unable to sit for any length of time are often still and sit for far longer than anyone thought possible. There are more than 800,000 people diagnosed with dementia in the UK and this figure is set to double by 2050. Dementia is the biggest killer in the UK second only to heart disease. In order to keep our current programmes running we need to raise £270,000 each year. Sadly we always have a waiting list of homes all desperate to utilise our services therefore support from local businesses and the community is vital.

OSSINGTON MAIN F.C. The 2011-2012 season ended on a very wet evening at Oxford Street with our 2nd team securing runners-up spot in the Doncaster Senior League. They had won all 4 games through April and early May to keep pace with leaders Sutton Rovers but succumbed in their final game to eventual champions Sutton, who thoroughly deserved their success having virtually remained unbeaten since Christmas. Congratulations to Manager Paul Colley, Assistant Keith Bell and the entire squad on what has been one of the most successful years in the Club's recent history. I know we won the Premier Division Cup last season but I believe our standing as League runners-up probably shows more consistency as a team over the past year. Runners-up was also an excellent achievement for our U.19s, who ended the year with 6 straight wins to emerge as leaders of a chasing pack of Clubs trying to catch champions-elect Frickley Athletic. Joint managerial team of Paul McCreadie, Andy Cowe and Kevin Eley brought about a transformation of the squad's form to achieve further success for the Club. The 1st team faced a run of 5 consecutive away fixtures to end their season, but won 3 of these tough games to eventually finish the season just outside the top six. The victories at promoted Glasshoughton, Shirebrook and Louth were earned through a splendid team effort, a feature common throughout a demanding season and testimony to the success of Manager Steve Lodge and coach Dan Lodge in their first full year in charge. So with all teams achieving their highest League placing and biggest points haul for some years it can only be described as a hugely successful season. The Club would like to express their gratitude and thanks to all the managers and players - since our first friendly in our pre-season tournament in July 2011 the 1st team have played 53 matches - that's some commitment for an amateur club! A word of acknowledgement too for our regular supporters (home attendances this season have shown an average increase of 23%) and not to forget the people who have followed the teams on their travels (we now have a fairly regular away support of upwards of a dozen every time) I must also recognise the contribution of the people behind the scenes, and no end of visitors have commented on the wonderful hospitality shown to them at Oxford Street this season, a tribute that must go down to our team of ladies who work behind the bar and provide after-match refreshments. One final note of disappointment is a mad 15 minute period in our last fixture at Louth when the referee brandished 3 yellow cards to our players could well have cost us the inaugural Fair Play Award for our division, although even 3 "yellows" will not stop us from yet another runners-up position. From a personal point of view the end of the playing season is far from a rest period as I began to prepare the pitch for its annual repair and maintenance schedule barely 12 hours after the ref. blew his whistle in the final home game. No doubt other hardened souls on the Committee will join me in their spare time in the weeks ahead to try and keep our facilities up to standard. I would also like to thank the editor of this magazine for allowing us the opportunity to publicise our community Football Club each month. See you all next season in 8-10 weeks time. ossington Wheelers Cycling Club – June News A bit of a mixed month for the club mainly due to the good old British summer weather since I last wrote....after a promising start to the season that saw the hottest March since inner tubes were invented was quickly followed by the wettest April we are now mid way through what seems to be the coldest May – which also happens to be wet and windy also! We seem to have shifted the seemingly endless rain but temperatures only rarely climbing into double figures now seem to be the norm? The main casualty of the abysmal weather has been the clubs regular ‘summer’ event the AAD Gas Handicap Time Trial League, with three out of four Wednesday evening rounds having to be abandoned before the off – although on the upside the one decent Wednesday so far saw a record twenty one riders line up at the start to battle the clock on the course up and down from Hatfield Woodhouse to Blaxton past Lindholme Prison. Youngster Stephen Patterson making the most of early season fitness to bag ten points on the night and sit top of the league with a net time of 12mins 35 secs. Fastest ride of the night went to Rossington professional and National Criterium Champion Graham Briggs, keen to sharpen his form with a number on his back and cheered on by his mate Ed Clancy MBE of the Olympic pursuit squad with a gross time of 20mins 58 secs. On the open racing front six club members endured a blustery 25 mile TT as part of the JE James League competition and propelled the club up into fifth position, Shaun Randall leading our riders home in 1hrs 6mins (48mins 30secs net) to take second in the events handicap competition. More events are upcoming in the league and a further rise up the table is not out of the club’s reach. One Sunday club run also fell foul of the April weather and a couple more were wet in places but that hasn’t put members off with the thirty rider mark again being reached in the last month, a month that has included three 80 mile outings to places as far afield as Lotherton hall to the north and Southwell to the south in amongst our regular destinations. There have also been more than fifteen riders on each of the Tuesday night social rides held so far. These rides leave St Michaels at 6.30pm weekly for approx 25 miles in two hours and are at a steady pace. An introductory ride of 50 miles is planned for Sunday 3 June leaving St Michaels at 9.00am and heading on a loop around Retford, these rides are intended as a step up to the longer summer club runs that otherwise fill the ride list at this time of year. Probably the longest (single day) ride to Cleethorpes and back of 130 miles is scheduled for 24 June, this will be an 8.00am meet, as usual now outside St Michaels. A further bright point for the club was the arrival of the summer kit order, (we just need some weather to use it now) and so now many new members have taken charge of their club strip to make the club even more prominent around the surrounding roads and lanes, keep your eyes peeled and I’m sure you’ll notice many of us in the coming months? ossington Cricket Club The cricket season is underway now after several false starts due to the weather and events on the field have been overshadowed by the news that the Club is in dire financial straits, so much so that the proposed ground and facilities improvements are in real danger. It would appear that tax returns have not been submitted for the last three years thereby incurring thousands of pounds in penalties and several other issues have been left unresolved. It is hoped that every member of the Club will rally around in order to help, the very least would be to pay their subs before the end of this month, this would go a long way to alleviate the pressure on the dwindling funds. At this point on behalf of the members of the Club I would take this opportunity to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Stephen and Roy Groves in trying to stabilise the situation. Roy Nelson

Carers Week 18th – 24th June Doncaster Carers Service, Carers Moving Forward, is a new service for adult carers living in Doncaster. The service is provided under contract to Doncaster Council by Age UK Doncaster. We aim to make contact with people who are in a caring role but do not recognise themselves as a carer and so do not receive the help and support, they are entitled. Rossington Councillor's Update I am happy to say that I have been re-elected with a majority of 701, thank you for voting for me. I just wish that we had a higher turnout! Everything is progressing well and we will see improvements in the village happening over the next few weeks and we shall have better play areas for the kids, a community allotment, a sensory garden open to all and lots and lots of flowers. The library is progressing as planned and the enlargement is on schedule. However, we are still looking for even more volunteers to help maximize its' opening hours. Please contact Sally on 865559 if you can help. Asking for volunteers, of course, wouldn’t be necessary if the Mayor would release the money that was put in the budget by Labour. We always need volunteers, and I can only thank the ones we have, but the pressure on those volunteers would be reduced by having a full time member of staff. The really good news is that the planning application for the FARRRS link road and UK Coals redevelopment of the old colliery site have been received by the council. Both these developments are really good for the village and should start a revival of the more depressed areas of Rossington. Sorry it is so short this month, but the election took a lot of my time and it is quite stressful and tiring. More importantly you’ll become part of the largest women's group in the UK, a community of women that’s been making things happen for nearly 100 years. The WI is what you make it: its not about Jam and Jerusalem (unless you want it to be) it’s about inspiring women (the motto of the WI since last year).

ickhill & District Lions Club and Grange lane Infant School
At Tickhill & District Lions quite often we’re not able to discuss the welfare projects we undertake as many involve helping local residents and so we’re always very careful to protect the privacy of those concerned. However we know that many of you support our events and so like to hear about how your money helps, so this month we’ve got an update about one of our local school projects that we’re able to be involved with as a result of your support. Grange Lane Infant school in Rossington runs a gardening club for their pupils. Not only does the club enable children to get their hands dirty and learn about growing their own plants, fruit and vegetables, but it also helps to create budding entrepreneurs as much of the produce is also sold to help raise funds to keep the club going. The club already gets a lot of support from parents as well as the teaching and caretaking staff, but we’ve been able to offer further support which we hope has helped to make their club even stronger. We’ve achieved this by helping to fund additional plants and equipment including raised beds and compost, strawberry planters and a variety of fruit trees and bushes. We’d like to thank Walkers Nurseries of Branton who not only supplied many items at cost (making your money go further), but were also able to source plants which otherwise we may not have been able to find. These included special thornless Gooseberry bushes which were required to meet health & safety guidelines and were sourced and imported from a specialist supplier in Holland. We’re really proud that since our help the school have achieved their level 2 in the RHS schools gardening scheme, and by taking orders from staff and parents for herbs, plants and other produce they have taken another step towards the financial self-sufficiency they are aiming for. lmfield Gymnastics Club Our Women’s Artistic Girls have just competed in their annual grades competition: with Lucy Caulton our first gymnast of the year to compete and competed at British Development Grade 12 coming 6th. We then entered 10 gymnasts in the Grade 14 competition through the different age groups of 8-15 years with 7 out of the 10 gymnasts gaining a distinction. Our gymnasts entered were Libby Jackson, Ella Davies, Jessica Rayner, Charlotte Gilbert, Olivia Penk, Olivia Morgan, Daniella Chapman, Leah Oliver, Grace Bradley and Emma Gill. As well as gaining a distinction Emma Gill and Jessica Rayner cames 6th and Olivia Morgan came 2nd. There were over 20 gymnasts in each age group of the competition so these results were fantastic. The club is absolutely fantastic and going from strength to strength, it is amazing how far the gymnasts and club have come since moving to Rossington, some of the gymnasts we entered in the Grade 14 competition have been doing gymnastics less than a year! these results are from lots and lots of hard work from the gymnasts and coaches and everyone involved with the club, as head coach I can't say thank you enough to everyone who makes Elmfield Gymnastics Club such a lovely place to be! Friends of Brodsworth Way Residents Group
It's hard to believe that the middle of the year is almost upon us and, whilst the group has not had any official meetings, the coffee mornings in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion are proving to be quite a pleasant morning out. The next one in June is on Thursday 17th, from 9:15 to 11:30 and everyone is welcome to come and have a go at our jigsaw puzzle, have a chat or bring something to do - whatever you would like. The simple aim is to bring our community together. If you are at retired or at home on that Thursday, come along and give it a try! Also, if you are a new resident on the estate, we do have three active neighbourhood watch schemes in operation on 1-29 Brodsworth Way, Chatsworth Drive and Sandbeck Close - the more the merrier if you think your road might benefit from such a scheme. OSSINGTON M.W.B.C. You might have guessed that the opening month of the bowling season co-incided with the South Yorkshire monsoon period, although quite remarkably only 2 matches were cancelled due to the weather. They are a hardy bunch you know they don their waterproofs, their "Grippax" gloves (kindly donated by new member Mick Cook) pick up their "rag" for wiping their woods, and take to the green without any hesitation...The usual comment is "Come on, we've played in worse than this.." when actually the conditions have been as bad as I can remember. Well done to all of our playing members who have braved the elements in recent weeks in order to get our matches completed. Congratulations to Bobby Porter who gained 3rd place in a Junior Competition held at Pilks Rec. green in late April, and also on his 2 wins on his promotion to the Tuesday Doubles League A team. Our 3 new playing members have also gained singles and doubles wins in their first month of competitive bowling - Jack Brown, Mick Cook and Eddie Dixon - and we have recently delved into the transfer market with the addition of Doreen Muffett from the now defunct Elmfield Park club. In a recent Over 60s match 50% of our 8 "man" team were female members this MUST be another first for the Club. Dispelling the theory that you're never too old to start, local Frank Thompson celebrated his 82nd birthday by becoming another new registered player this season... but yet we still can't entice some youngsters to play the game. With a couple of extra social bowlers, our membership is increasing. We are able to put out 2 sides on a regular basis and we have members who are willing to step down to allow others to play- an attribute that many clubs would envy and a factor in the friendliness and co-operation amongst Club members. The Club recently played host to the Doncaster Pairs Competition with over 20 entries. With the greens at Rossington in good condition, many outsiders commented on how pleasurable it was to play on such an even surface, and they also praised our hospitality. Let's hope for a drier and warmer June so that we can enjoy our sport with the sun on our backs, and not have to wear our "wet gear".
