“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.” Oscar Wilde.
June already and the summer months are upon us. Exam season is in full swing and you can find a summer fair, gala or other outdoor activity to go to most weekends! Over the next few issues you will find details of many such events on these pages. If you are organising an event this summer then be sure to email details to me. If you are planning home improvements or a garden project this summer, you will find lots of businesses and tradespeople within these pages who will be happy to assist you. Or perhaps it is you or your health that needs an overhaul, or you are looking for a new hobby, some legal advice or a car repair. Whatever you are looking for, the chances are you will find help within this magazine. Don’t forget to let them know where you found them if you get in touch with any. And if you know of a business that may benefit from advertising please ask them to get in touch or pass their details on to me so that I can give them a call. The July issue will be delivered to you late June. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 9th June. Enjoy June and I will be back in a months’ time with your July magazine.
Best wishes,

Dog Walkers – A thank you Last year I asked dog walkers to stay to the SXEOLF SDWK EHWZHHQ WKH Č´ HOGV RÎ? %UXQL :D\ DV it caused a chain reaction of barking between dogs along Kepple Close/ Bond St.
Rossington Village Life Because of last month’s piece, we had a visit from John Cowie, who is providing us with his work on the memorial pieces at St Michael’s. He covers both the First and the Second World War in his account of those who gave their lives from Rossington, or with Rossington connections. He is joining our group, and along with Roy Venables’ recollections of the work done by the History Group, we are now gathering a body of work that we hope will appear in due course in the greater archive that is being prepared by Doncaster Archives. John now lives in Tickhill, but has relatives in Rossington and it was whilst with WKHP WKDW KH VDZ RXU SLHFH DQG RÎ? HUHG XV KLV work. Check out the pages as they are uploaded.
Well it was a great success and very much appreciated by many of the residents. We were able to sit/garden and relax in our gardens much more than the previous year. Thanks to all the dog walkers who helped make it a pleasant summer. Hopefully the few who still felt the need to walk past our gardens will decide to take in the glorious view down the SDWKV EHWZHHQ WKH ȴ HOGV Again THANK YOU. Here’s to a warm and lovely summer to everyone who reads this!.

What do people know about me? Cause for a Cuppa! Hello and thanks for coming by for our monthly chat. I enjoy our times together and continue to appreciate the comments that have come my way over the years. Thanks also to Paula for allowing me a spot in Rossington Today. Ever have one of those moments when the penny just drops? I was at the gym one morning when I struck up a conversation with a very kind gentleman who was surprised that a church man would be doing 25 minutes on the “random programmeâ€? on the step machine. He knew me from a contact I had from a village school. That comment stayed with me during the day. How do people see me? What do people know about me? I realised that most know very little about me. I know the normal focus of June is Father’s Day. But I thought, as the focus of this little article is about us helping each other with family life, it’s important you know a bit about me and my family. I was born in Phoenix, Arizona (Grand Canyon WHUULWRU\ DQG PRYHG DERXW IRU \HDUV Č´ QDOO\ VHWWOLQJ in West Virginia (remember, “Almost Heaven, West Virginiaâ€??). My parents did not get on. I hated mum ‌ blamed her for what happened. I wish I hadn’t done that. But she never gave up. She was a single mother with 4 children. She never re-married. It wasn’t that she wasn’t interested. Throughout my school days, I felt that I really missed out. No Dad watched me during my sports. I didn’t understand what it was like to be a parent. (Boy do I appreciate her now!) Little did I know what mum was doing just to put food on the table. There were no EHQHČ´ WV :KDWHYHU VKH HDUQHG ZDV ZKDW ZH KDG WR live on. I later found out she sold her blood as often as she could to have bit more money for her children. I told myself, if I was ever a Dad, I would not do to my children what my father did to me. It wasn’t until my last year of high school when a friend invited me to church (I was 18) that I started to put things together. I had a real problem with God ‌ if it was even true. But I kept going back to church and realised there was something real to it all. After several months of intellectual battles and questions, Ζ Č´ QDOO\ VDLG ČŠ\HVČ‹ WR *RG DQG WKDW ZDV ZKHQ P\ process of being able to forgive my Dad started. Since that time it has been quite a journey. I graduated from uni with a degree in electronics engineering and worked on some very interesting projects. I got involved and worked with the deaf, got married, had 2 children and lived in Croatia for 18 months. We have now been in England for (pushing) 15 years. My youngest was born at DRI. I like going to the gym (that is, once I get started), biking, lasagne, baked goods (got that from mum) and historical places (Beamish was awesome!). I love creative and quirky things. I like giving people a change to discover who God is and giving them space and time to question and think. I love Messy Church and the people I have come to meet over the last 5 years. I enjoy doing assemblies in schools ‌ don’t really care for the tag line from the teenagers “Pasta Ericâ€? but eh, no big deal. I don’t like sprouts or black pudding (sorry). I do like Doncaster and living in Rosso. See ‌ I’m just a normal bloke with a normal family who does normal things. I like chatting with people ‌ and as always, the door is open and the kettle is on. :)

Rossington Parade and Community Arts Project Well, we did it! Months of planning, and partnering with Right up our Street and Handmade Parades, with funding from the Arts Council, we proudly staged the Grand Parade on 1 May, walking from Holmescarr Community Centre, via Queen Mary’s Road, to the Welfare. Along the way, we sang, danced and played with Sharon Richards’ Singing School, St Michael’s School Orchestra, and the Handmade Samba Band, with a total nearing 200 in the parade itself from these and from the community. The artistic and creative input came from our partners, but most of what was seen was made by our community at the workshops – children and their parents, and grandparents – who then wore the costumes and carried the pieces in the Parade. So many things to see in the Parade: we represented the past with miners, pit ponies, pigeons, picks and axes, and the present was centred around our ongoing issues with the level crossing where there were cars that were created by Messy Church PHPEHUV D WUDLQ WKDW VWRSSHG WKH WUDÉ? F DV WKH VDPED EDQG acted as that, and the gates came up and down. The future was shown with Rossington returning to a green area: owls and foxes, and we had a robot and a time machine (set up on a mobility VFRRWHU 7KH VDPED EDQG JDYH D SHUIRUPDQFH WR Č´ QDOLVH WKH Parade at the Welfare – fantastic drumming from them. The choir stopped outside the Royal Care Home and gave a performance for the residents. We hope you agree it was colourful, vibrant, and fun. Lots of smiling faces showed up in our photos – both the participants and the viewers were happy people, and the weather was good to us too. Photos are courtesy of Craig Shaw and Blu Planet, and more can be seen on our Facebook page and the websites for Right Up Our Street and Handmade Parades. A big thank you to all of those who were makers, and Paraders, and to the schools who allowed visits from the artists to help with creating pieces. We have retained some of it but many of the costumes and crafted work went home with the people who made them. Thank you to our friends in Right Up Our Street, and Handmade Parades. The Parade team will regroup and present Rossington with more in the future, and we look forward to your joining us to help with our projects. Fun Dog Show Lass the Lurcher is looking forward to the RSPCA Fun Dog Show at the Animal Centre on Great North Road, Bawtry, on June 11th from 11am to 3pm. There are plenty of classes to enter for both adult and child handlers and lots of stalls and refreshments to complete a great family day out. Lass will be at the show, but what she really wants is a forever home. She has been with the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre for quite a while now, always overlooked in favour of younger dogs. She is a lovely girl who in spite of her 12 years doesn’t act her age. She is a little WLPLG DW Č´ UVW EXW VKH VRRQ FRPHV DURXQG IRU D fuss and a cuddle and loves to be groomed. She gets on with some dogs but is looking for a quiet home with no other animals to live out the remainder of

The Humble Viola Living in a house full of string players I have to think how to pronounce viola. My musicians say vee-ohla but gardeners generally say vy-oh-la! Either way it’s a wonderfully obliging little À RZHU DQG VR HDV\ WR JURZ 9LRODV DUH D VPDOOHU À RZHUHG YHUVLRQ RI a pansy but are more reliably perennial. They come in an amazingly wide range of FRORXUV DQG À RZHU SDWWHUQV 7KH\ DUH DOVR incredibly easy to propagate. To make more viola plants simply cut off 7-8cm / 3 inches of the shoot tips at any time of year. Remove the lower leaves and root them into sandy compost. When they take, repot the little plantlets into 7.5cm / 3 inch pots of multi-purpose compost until they become established. They can then be planted out in the garden. The whole process only takes a matter of a few weeks! Violas are happy in sun, or dappled shade and prefer soil that doesn’t become too dry, so in fact they are the perfect plant for most British gardens and will provide masses of colour at ankle-height. 28 ROSSINGTON TODAY
I have many favourites. There is a pretty purple and yellow one in my garden called Heartsease which migrated from a neighbour’s garden and has self-seeded everywhere. I added Grey Owl, which is pale blue and soft yellow, and I propagated one from my mother-in-law’s garden, called Irish Molly, which is various shades of subtle green, though I’ve seen other colours also being sold under that name! This year I have an exquisitely pretty fragrant variety called Sorbet ‘Yellow Frost’. I can’t recommend it highly enough. The thing is, they are so easy to grow that you can go to any garden centre and pick your favourite colour combination. Whether you say vee-oh-la or vy-oh-la, WKLV ORYHO\ OLWWOH À RZHU ZLOO DGG PXVLF WR your garden display. Happy Gardening! TO ADVERTISE CALL 01302 969696

Rossington Memorial Hall Many residents in Rossington don’t even know the Memorial Hall on McConnell Crescent exists so when they come along they are really surprised at what a great asset it is to the community. The Memorial Hall is run by local people on behalf of local people so any income raised goes straight back into running the centre for the community. In the last couple of years they’ve had grants to make some fantastic renovations and refurbishment to the whole building. The centre is great for Birthday Parties, Christenings, Funerals, Celebration Events and :HGGLQJV 7KHUH LV D ȴ YH VWDU .LWFKHQ DYDLODEOH DQG a Bar. Co-op Grants Did you know that if you shop at any Co-op and have a loyalty card, you can nominate a local charity who will receive a grant. Local Charities Good Neighbours and the Memorial Hall each received a grant of £2,200 from your contributions. So a huge thank you to everyone who nominated these charities and an even bigger thank you to the Co-op for supporting local communities. Rossington Traditional Village Fete The Parish Council is planning to put on an old fashioned village fete on 30 August 2017 on the former All Saints Football Ground. If you’d got any ideas or would like to volunteer please contact the Clerk – contact details above. Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, where the year is flying by. My Cyprus rescue dog (Heart) from the Sanctuary is doing really well, she still has a little bit of a skin issue however this is getting so much better and the vet did say it could take 6 months or more to calm down. I still can’t believe how good she is, she is so laid back and nothing much now seems to faze her. She is doing well with her commands (her English is coming on a treat !) and she is really good off her lead in a safe environment and recall is getting there. So all good so far. Now a little information about Micro chipping. From the 6th April 2016 the law said that all dogs in the UK must be Micro chipped by their owner, and registered on an authorised database. Wearing a collar and an identity tag in public is also a requirement. Do not add your pets name to the tag just telephone numbers. You can be fined £5000 if your dog is not displaying a collar with a disk and £500 if your dog is not micro chipped. If your dog is stolen or lost the above will give you a better chance of becoming reunited with your beloved pet. One of our volunteers recently did a tom bola at Pets at Home and raised lots of money for us. A big thank you to Vanya (the volunteer) and the staff there who are always very supportive. We also stood outside the Parish Room in Tickhill on Scarecrow
40 ROSSINGTON TODAY
festival day and also did a tom bola raising around £200 which was a super result. Many thanks to everyone that came to say hello and supported us. It was a really fantastic day (but a little cold). A huge thank you to Laura Wood from Direct Line, Doncaster who organised it for us to collect at their offices . We held a tombola and staff also donated a van-full of goodies for our dogs and cats. We raised a fantastic £196.13 on the day. Thank you to Direct Line for allowing us to do this. For various reasons we have taken in lots of dogs over the past weeks from people that are no longer able to take care of their dogs through ill health or can no longer cope with large untrained energetic dogs. If you are looking to purchase a dog please think of your lifestyle, whether you can cope with a dog and give a little thought to what size your accommodation is. If you are at work, how will you take care of it, do you have a backup plan to check on your new arrival every few hours. Or is everyone in the household fully committed to a new pet. Dogs and cats are a great comfort , dogs will get you out and about making new friends and keeping you fit. Cats are very much more independent souls and more aloof. Both make fantastic pets, however cats are not as time consuming. If you do have any spare time on their hands to help with fund raising please let us
Finding a forever home know. Unfortunately lots of our volunteers work full time during the week outside the Sanctuary and can only spare weekends. If you have time to help with street collections or other events please let us know. Now we are hoping for better weather please can I remind everyone about not leaving your pet in a hot car. Even if the windows are open it is still enough to cause so much damage and even worse death to your pet. If you are keep fit addicts runners, joggers, fell runners most dogs are not equipped to run non-stop for long distances, so if you are unsure please leave your treasured pet at home. Likewise remember it is illegal to ‘walk’ your dog whilst cycling which I see often. Not only is it dangerous, but does anyone really believe their dog enjoys this. They don’t have a say do they? Just a reminder our fun dog show is on the 2nd July on the recreation field in Tickhill. There will be lots of stalls and rosettes for 1, 2, 3 prizes. This is a fantastic event, bring a picnic and a blanket and enjoy a fantastic day. We love to see all our dogs coming back to see us. Call the Sanctuary if you need any information about anything above 01302 711330. Bye for now.

Update from Councillors
Rachael Blake and Mick Cooper Your DMBC Councillors A huge thank you to everyone who supported us in the local elections. Months before the election we were knocking at people’s doors to introduce ourselves and find out what was concerning residents and we have lots to do in the next few months. It was really good to hear how many people found out about the work Rachael had been doing by reading this update so we will ensure we continue to provide a regular update every month. Thank you to the many residents who voted for us and we were very disappointed that Kevin Fennelly wasn’t elected as well but having 2 Labour councillors will mean that the work that Rachael has been doing will be shared by Mick and we can deal with even more things in the village. We are available for all residents, and our term of office is 4 years so we are really looking forward to delivering on our election pledges – more details about this below. Grand Parade – 1 May What a fantastic event for the village! To see so many adults and children taking part in hand made costumes and Sharon Richard’s Choir and St Michael’s school band singing and playing was brilliant and everyone we spoke to thought it was great. The past, present and future theme went down really well. Rachael took part and was in the present section and carried the level crossing lights and this section certainly had a good time being so close to the samba band. The Fun Day afterwards at the Welfare was really good as well and it was good to see so many people supporting the Welfare for this their annual fundraising event. The Steam event is the next event at the Welfare in June and July sees the Parish Council’s annual 3 day festival – both events are definitely worth attending. Rossington Activities Programme (RAP) We now have more groups joining the programme and we will be producing the details of how your children (from 0-19) can get involved. Also we are designing a loyalty card, an end of summer presentation night, and additional promotional events in June and July so you can come along and find out more about the programme and how you can sign up for it. As part of the programme, we are delighted that Rossington Community Library’s reading scheme will be included. I have mentioned before about the great work that the volunteers are doing to keep the library open and they have kindly agreed for the library to be one of the many places that you can find out about the programme as well as the summer reading challenge being included in our loyalty scheme. Community Litter Picks We organised our first one of these, before we were elected in response to a resident who had contacted me concerned about the rubbish that had accumulated at the edges on Brodsworth playing field. We met 42 ROSSINGTON TODAY
DMBC’s Street Scene Team at the pavilion and they had a team of staff who were able to load the dumped larger items onto the wagon while we litter picked the area. An old shed, fencing, a table and a baby’s car seat were just a few of the larger items that we removed – about 10 bags or rubbish were collected in addition to the larger items and we will be including the area for one of our regular community litter picks in the future. Residents are already doing a lot to keep the area clean themselves with regular dog walkers explaining how they collected cans and bottles on their travels. The same day we went to the backs between Edward and Nelson and started on tidying up this area. The Street Scene Team were going to get additional equipment to clean the area and we will be working with DMBC’s private sector housing team and the enforcement team to ensure that all residents know that the only rubbish that can be put in these backs is if it is in a bin. This is the same for Brodsworth field and with DMBC having less and less money to spend it is such a shame that money is being used to clean up after residents rather than being used to enhance flower beds, play areas, tree planting etc. One of the things I have mentioned before is to have a local education campaign regarding litter and this is something that we will be looking into. Street Surgeries As we mentioned above, we are starting to plan how we are going to be doing the work that we promised starting with our street surgeries and community litter picks. The way in which the street surgeries work is that rather than you having to come to us, we come to you. A few days before we are due to come into your area, we will deliver letters to all residents along with a “Tell us your concerns form”. When we are in your area you can let us know if you want us to call and see you, or you can send us back your form letting us know what your concerns are. After we have completed our walk in your area, we will send you another letter, letting you know the issues that we found and what we have been doing about them. This way we will be able to make contact with every resident in the village. Our fixed surgeries at locations across the village will be starting in July and further details will be in next month’s update. In the meantime, if there is anything you want to tell us or any individual problems you need assistance with, please contact us – details below. Rachael Tel: 07976896563 doncaster.gov.uk

Matthew Blakely A new museum in Retford opened at the end of May to celebrate the Pilgrim Fathers’ departure to New England . 2020 marks the 400th anniversary of William Brewster’s journey on the Mayflower and Nottinghamshire is preparing for American visitors with this new visitor centre which tells their story. As always June is Pot-Month with two major pottery events taking place locally. We have The Hamlyns opening their studios in Everton and Earth and Fire is as always toward the end of June, however its moved location. Some of you will know that Rufford under the helmsman-ship of Notts County Council have dismantled their arts facilities, turfed out their excellent ceramics facilities, got rid of all the arts-workshops that have been running there for millennia and attempted a black-hole in the north of the county. After 20 years running at Rufford, Welbeck have taken on Earth and Fire, and guess what? It is funded by Notts County Council. This enormously popular event will still attract masses of interest with over 100 potters and their wears, with some doing demonstrations.
