Welcome to the
March
2019 edition
This month Today Publications celebrates its 14th birthday! Yes, it is 14 years since the ďŹ rst issue of Tickhill Today was delivered. I thank everyone who has supported any of the 6 publications that we now have during those 14 years. From the contributors who regularly provide details of their group’s events and meetings, to the distributors who get the magazines out to local homes and of course the advertisers without whom there could be no magazine. Thank you also to all our readers particularly those who use the local businesses, services, clubs and societies promoted within our pages. I never cease to be amazed at how important community magazines are, and the number of people who tell me how useful they ďŹ nd them. They play a part in linking people together; helping businesses to grow; and providing people with some traditional print media to enjoy with a cup of tea! Next month I will be adding our 7th magazine to those published. This time a publication for the residents of WoodďŹ eld Plantation, Carr Lodge and Alverley. If you would like to be in this magazine then please let me know.

Cause for a Cuppa Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa! I wanted to wish all the Mums a very Happy Mother’s Day. I wish I could explain how valuable you are. Parenting is tough, draining and to be brutally honest ‌ sometimes you just want to do a runner. Don’t give up. If you are having struggles, reach out to someone. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help. It actually shows strength and maturity. We ALL need help from time to time. I recently walked down the “Cause for a Cuppaâ€? memory lane. I fell on March 2012. I mentioned how GLÉ? FXOW LW ZDV IRU PH DV LW ZDV WKH Č´ UVW 0RWKHULQJ Sunday after Mum had passed away. Is it possible it’s been 7 years? I see any number of posts on FaceBook of people whose mums had passed away. Missing them never goes away. That’s OK. Our parents play an irreplaceable role in our lives. We all have agreed that disagreements are part of life. Wouldn’t it then make sense to properly model that part of our lives as well. If we rip into our partner during an argument, then it wouldn’t be too much a stretch to think they would learn that’s how you do it. Be attentive. For any children who have been in my assemblies over the years, we have a little chant we do together ‌ “let’s all be attentive like the deerâ€? It’s all about “active listeningâ€?. You may have heard the saying “the light’s on but nobody’s homeâ€?. I’ve found it really helpful as well to say things like “OK, if I understand correctly, you mean ________â€?. That shows you value what they are saying. You don’t have to agree with it but does show you are really listening. Don’t yell. This is tough. Believe me, I know. Emotions are high. We don’t agree with each other and the natural response is to raise our voices and maybe even get right up into their faces. But I’ve found it within myself that once I get to that stage, I’ve lost the plot. Active listening is out the window and it’s all about winning the battle. Then any number of times, the topic turns from the issue to the yelling ‌ “Don’t you yell at me / use that tone of voice with me!â€? In any one of various tones of voice, David spits out an “I’m sorryâ€?. It may or may not be sincere but at least they say it. How are we with this? I know pride can get the better of us. We need to build strong relationships. A huge part of it is being examples to our children ‌ being willing to apologise for a wrong done. Becoming More Self-Aware
Thinking about the last 7 days…
You may have heard phrases such as…
(There are a few examples at the beginning of this article)
What annoyed you? What did you enjoy more than expected? What could you be grateful for? Where did you make a mistake and what can you lesson from that mistake? What action should you have taken but procrastinated on?
“You can’t fix a problem you don’t know exists”
Every day, 5 minutes before you go to bed, write down your answers to them and use these answers to set targets or at least increase awareness in the direction you wish the next 24 hours to take.
If you take only even a couple of minutes to think about your answers to these questions, you may find some interesting and always useful insights. With so much information swimming around our heads, it’s no wonder we rarely take the time to reflect, but we should. Self-awareness is one of the most overlooked, simplest and yet extremely powerful ways to take responsibility for your position in life and create genuine noticeable improvements.
12
“What gets monitored gets done” “You don’t know what you don’t know” …and so on. I believe them all! There are as many connections in 1 cubic cm of your brain as there are stars in the entire Milky Way galaxy…in other words, there’s a lot going on upstairs! Unless you find a way to consciously let your brain know what to look out for (what’s important to you) then it’ll make the choices for you.
It’s a simple exercise but one you’ll feel working after only a short time doing it. As always, go create a day and life that counts & always have more desires than excuses. To Your Success!
So, let’s be smart. Make a list of 5-10 questions you feel will provide you with the best insight and reminders into the areas of your life you wish to improve.

St Michael’s At Amazon January was a very exciting time for many of our children both in and out of school. Our school was invited to be WKH Č´ UVW VFKRRO WR HQWHU WKH $PD]RQ warehouse. We were incredibly excited about the prospect of entering this huge building and seeing what goes on inside. Initially, our Year 3 children visited with their WHDFKHUV H[SORULQJ WKH GLÎ? HUHQW GHSDUWPHQWV and learning about the process from ordering to delivery. When they returned to school, they were so happy that all the other year groups wanted a visit. Adam, the Amazon Manager, agreed for our Year 4 to visit as it would link in with their recycling topic. Below is a diary entry about their visit, from our Year 4 reporter. Dear diary, On Monday, I went to Amazon. Nervously, we got on the bus everyone was excited. When we got there we were greeted by Adam. We went in the building and went in a classroom. Next, we went through the rules to keep us safe. After that, Adam told us to put on the safety jackets and the headset on and the girls’ hair needed to be tied up. Once it was done, we could enter the colossal warehouse. I did not know what to say‌. It was huge! I was amazed at how big it is. Once I knew it was the same size of 14 football pitches, I was surprised. I was even more surprised when I saw the pickers because they were picking up heavy items. They went up and down and can go to the top shelf. The workers were packing quickly all the orders. At the end, we had chance to play with a mini truck or a game. It was a big surprise. It was amazing playing with the toys. My favourite part was EVERYTHING! I would like to work there when I’m older because it’s cool.
Sam We would like to take this opportunity to thank Amazon for inviting us and giving up their time to inspire our children. Thank you.

Hardy Annuals Hardy annuals: the name is an oxymoron. Hardy plants are supposed to be able to survive the winter aren’t WKH\ EXW DQQXDOV E\ WKHLU GH¿ QLWLRQ GRQ¶W In fact, the names hardy, half-hardy and tender, when applied to annuals, refer to the relative cold tolerance of the newly planted seeds. Hardy annual seeds can handle being frozen in the soil so are ideal for planting outside, either in the autumn or now. Productive, adaptable and cheap, they are the ideal credit-crunch plants. Here’s some news about making costumes for the 3DUDGH 0RQGD\ WK 0D\ Č‚ WKH Č´ UVW KROLGD\ RI WKH month, is our Parade Day, so not long to wait now. Workshops are planned for the afternoons of Wednesday, 17th and Thursday, 25th April in the school holidays, and that may seem very near to the actual day. However, our resident artist, Kate, is working with the Brownies, the Beavers and Cubs, and the group from the SMILE Day Centre. She will also work with the schools during March on other pieces, so it would be great if parents could bring the children along to the workshops so they can make costumes, showcase their craft skills, and look at wearing the outcomes of the days on the Parade itself. It isn’t about marching the route, as we dance our way round!
Rossington Miners Welfare Bowling Club Just a short note to tell you all that we are looking for new members, young, old, or in between, male or female. We play league games on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We also have social bowling on Thursday usually 10am to 11am. Also any day social. THE COST IS AS FOLLOWS Thurs Social ÂŁ25. Any day social ÂŁ30. Full team member ÂŁ35 + ÂŁ5 DDBA. Not bad that, for all the exercise and enjoyment you get, plus meeting people. So please come along and meet me. I shall be down at the green pavilion on Sat 23rd February & Sat 2nd March from 10am till 12am to take any subscriptions. I look forward to seeing you.
Last time in 2017, we had, amongst many things, giant creatures, a time machine, costumed miners, railway people, car drivers, owls, and robots, so what can we expect this year in May? Remember our theme is Up, Up and Away, so anything that Ⱦ LHV LV FHUWDLQO\ RQ WKH FDUGV :H DOUHDG\ KDYH a giant kite and a space shuttle built, so we’ll be looking for people to carry those and more around our route from Holmescarr, down Queen Mary’s Road, and West End Lane, to the Welfare. We’ve got most of the music sorted already, so that too is available, as well as the spectacle of the parade itself.
Barry
There will be some Sunday workshops for those who can come at the weekends, prior to the Easter holidays. There’s plenty to keep us busy, and those who come will get an early glimpse of the content for this year. Please get in touch via our Facebook page if you want to come along to our monthly meetings to learn more of how you can help and we’ll need you on the day.
