ause for a Cuppa

Good morning (or afternoon or evening), not from Cause for a Cuppa headquarters in Rossington but from an Orlando, Florida hotel. This past Sunday we had a special memorial service for Mum. It was different in that we held it at a place that was special to Mum … a forrest area with a fabulous overlook onto a lake. It feels so … strange, even saying all these things. Though I KNEW this time was coming, saying good-bye to a parent (or I can imagine a son/daughter) was something that was always going to happen some time “later” but never “today”. Two major things came out of this whole experience that I would like to share and that hopefully will provide some support for you. The first thing is that of markers. As a family growing up, we were never good at setting up markers. By markers, I mean doing special things to recognise important days and accomplishments and just times to … celebrate life. Money was always very tight and we just didn’t do birthday parties, holidays out, etc. It’s not that we didn’t do anything but it wasn’t part of the Simpson culture. But we broke tradition and set a fantastic marker to honour Mum. We had a BBQ, 45 or 50 people along with enough to eat to feed 100 and hired a large pavilion to host the service. We set a marker. After everyone left, we took Mum’s ashes, scattered them near the overlook in the area she loved and planted some flowers. We set a marker. It will be a time that I (and hopefully Chase will remember) can look back as a special time. The second thing that came out was what people said about Mum during our event. My brother wrote and read a very moving tribute … all dealing with her character, the stuff on the inside. People talked about her passion for quilting and making people happy with her amazing skill with needle and wool. Her colleagues spoke about her dedication to complete the job and willingness (when called on) to go beyond the 8 hours without a complaint. Those are all the things I remember. Nothing was mentioned about a house, details of her work, a car … stuff. That spoke volumes. At the end of the day, what really matters is WHO WE ARE as people, not the stuff we accumulated. Makes you think … Thank you for allowing me to share my journey with you. It has been hard but helpful for me … and hopefully maybe some of you as well. As always, if you would like to stop by for a chat & a cuppa, the door is always open! (Eric Simpson, 07828141472, eric@communitybaptist.co.uk, Facebook)

Rossington History Group - X-rays.

On November 8th 1895, physicist Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen became the first person to observe X-rays, a significant scientific development that would ultimately benefit a variety of fields, most of all medicine, by making the invisible visible. His discovery occurred accidentally when he was testing whether cathode rays could pass through glass. He noticed a glow coming from a nearby chemically coated screen and named the rays that caused this glow X-rays because of their unknown origin. X-rays act similarly to light rays but are at much shorter wavelengths. Rontgen carried out experiments to better understand his discovery and learned that X-rays could penetrate human flesh but not higher density substances such as bone or lead and therefore could be photographed. The discovery was hailed as a medical miracle and X-rays soon became an important diagnostic tool in medicine, allowing doctors to see inside the human body for the first time without surgery. In 1897, X-rays were first used on a military battlefield, during the Balkan War, to find bullets and broken bones inside patients. Scientists were quick to realise the benefits of X-rays, but slower to understand the harmful effects of radiation. Initially, it was believed that X-rays passed through flesh as harmlessly as light but gradually the risks of radiation (still not fully understood) were taken more seriously. During the 1930s, 40s and 50s, many shoe shops used shoe fitting fluoroscopes. Remember them? A typical unit consisted of a wooden cabinet with an opening near the bottom into which the feet were placed. When you looked through one of the viewing ports on top of the cabinet you would see a fluorescent image of the bones of the feet and the outline of the shoes. When you put your feet into the shoe fitting fluoroscope you were effectively standing on top of an X-ray tube. It wasn’t until the 1950s that this practice was determined to be risky. Do you remember when mass X-ray programmes were introduced in the 1950s and 60s to screen children for TB and other chest complaints? The screening successfully identified many children with TB who were subsequently treated and cured. As the incidence of TB decreased, the programme was terminated. Wihelm Rontgen received numerous accolades for his work, including the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901, yet he remained modest and never tried to patent his discovery. Today, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine, material analysis and devices such as airport security scanners.

ossington Wheelers – November news November and December are traditionally the close season months for cyclists before the New Year brings the new challenge to get back into shape for the new season beginning in March. Many riders peg back the miles and the intensity of their riding through late autumn, other riders however find more time to ride following the cessation of other summer activities and conditions can often be ideal providing the wind is light…? Our club rides will certainly be continuing throughout the winter and are generally shorter and steadier than the summer rides but take in more hills – to keep riders warm on most days! Our second ‘Introductory Ride’ in early October attracted 17 riders and the next ride of this type is scheduled for 6/11/11 – this is the time of year for beginners out there to get started and get a few months riding in before the 2012 summer. One of our club runs in late September attracted 22 riders out into the Lincs flatlands, this with at least 4 regular riders absent! British Cycling received a big boost in September with Mark Cavendish claiming the World Championships to add to his Tour de France green jersey and thenndhe subsequently signed for British Pro Team – Team Sky. Other members of this outfit claimed 2 and 3rd in the Tour of Spain to collectively raise hopes that 2012 could be the best year yet for British Road Cycling with the London Olympics also looming large where the track cycling team were the stars in 2008! Rossington Wheelers are making every effort to cater for the local interest that might be created on the back of this publicity and our ‘Introductory Rides’ are the first part of this. In 2012 we are staging a 50 mile Open TT event, we are also staging a Grass-Track meet as part of the Carnival celebrations and the AAD Gas TT Handicap Trophy will be defended by inaugural winner Paul Ellwell (41 points) who held off main challenger Charles Harvey (38) and Brendan Simpson (33) to claim the prize. On top of this we have a group of members who seem keen to represent the club in various other races and events. Club member Alan Clark regularly competes in Duathlon and Triathlon events through the harsh winter months also. Coming back to 2011 the events for this year have not quite finished with the annual Hill-Climb Award to be competed for on 23/10/11 up into Clifton Village from the back of Crookhill GC, a real ‘lung-buster’! Then the final cycling event of 2011 is the Rossington Wheelers ‘Cyclo X-mas’ event that is a key fixture in the Lincolnshire Winter Cyclo Cross League and this will take place Sunday 18/12/11 at Rossington Welfare. Events include: Junior, Youth, Senior, Veterans and Ladies on a course around the fields and woods of The Welfare, well worth coming and supporting - honest, especially as the defending champion is Rossington’s own Graham Briggs! On the more sociable riding front 7 club members attended the annual trip to Bala on the edge of Snowdonia where we completed 125 miles of hilly riding across two days. The first day began wet but brightened as we made our way along the coast midway through the ride. The only real disruption after the bad weather being the writer’s seat breaking in a totally avoidable ‘off’ approx 25 miles from home – fortunately my resourceful fellow riders were able to fix this no problem using nothing more than a fence post, a

rough slate, a tyre lever and a degree of brute force…..unfortunately we missed the second café! Day two was a leisurely 35 or so miles to recover from the 20% climbs of day one. A good weekend was had. All information about the club, including joining the club and its activities are readily available at www.rossingtonwheelers.co.uk or on our Facebook page or by visiting chairman and sponsor Les Hudson at Hudson Cycles on King Avenue. Presenting the thrilling and heart warming story of Mowgli, the boy brought up by wolves. A very special play for children and the young at heart

Rossington Hall Riding for the Disabled We are based at the Northern Racing College near Bawtry, Doncaster. We are a small group with 5 horses which are used to give Disabled adults and children riding lessons on a weekly basis. We have approx 60 clients riding every week with all forms of disabilities. We have approximately 20 volunteers and two riding instructors. All of the volunteers are unpaid and volunteer because we all think it is a worthwhile cause. We are self sufficient and receive no financial help from RDA national which is the main body. We have been robbed 4 times this year with the most recent being Friday the 7th of October. This time they took our field cleaning tools, self watering water troughs and Hay out of the storage shelter. Previous to this more field cleaning tools were stolen along with electric fence posts, tape and battery twice. All in all over this year we have had over ÂŁ1,000 worth of equipment stolen which we have had to replace out of our funds which are either donated or we have to fundraise for. We are devastated that we have been targeted yet again and wonder if the people who are doing this realise that they are taking enjoyment away from disabled people who love to come and ride the horses on a weekly basis. If anyone has information that could put a stop to this please do report it. We always in need volunteers who have a few hours a week to spare. You do not necessarily have to have experience of horses as we also need people to help with admin, hat fitting and sidewalking. Rossington Parish Council News The Carnival was a success! Well attended and thoroughly enjoyed and the Parish Council's funded play equipment had queues all day long. Well done to all that helped organise and run the event and especially to the Welfare. The Good Neighbours, meals service for the elderly, has now received the ÂŁ8,000 promised them by DMBC which will allow for future growth and a much enhanced service. Working with DMBC brigs material benefits, The Parish Council decided at September's meeting to approve a number of events that we hope to take place. These are seen as a three year project, and it is hoped that eventually we will have festivities all year round. Shrove Tuesday - Pancake races in the Market place Easter - Easter bunny Competition and Egg Hunt May (early) - May Day Parade with Maypole and Morris Dancing May (late) - Steam and Vintage Rally June - Brodsworth Way fun day July (early) - Medieval show and Market July (as schools finish) - Village Carnival and Gala August (early) - Brodsworth Way Village Barbeque The vandalism to 'Waddy' bridge can be August (late) - live music mini festival seen front and centre it has been cut September - Beer Festival with a Stihl saw! These plastic rails are September - Parish Memorial Hall Open Day valueless, but since this picture was October - Steam and Vintage Festival of Light taken it has been vandalised again! The Parish Memorial Hall open day gets better each year with all sorts of demonstrations, singing, medicals, books, face painting, free buffet and the rest. Keep an eye out for it next year and enjoy our hospitality. The Projects committee have approved planting a garden and replacing the damaged wall around the Miners Wheel Memorial Garden. Also some planters to brighten up the market place. Plans are well in hand for the Christmas market with as steam organ and a puppet group booked, 6 extra Christmas lights have been ordered for Queen Mary's Road. The Village bonfire's final planning stages are being put in place. Plans are well on the way to start the Rossington in Bloom beautification of the village. We hope to enter the competition next year. There was a joint Strategy and Regeneration Committee to discuss the re-forming of Rossington Forward with a much greater input from the Parish Council. One further meeting will be required to finalise this. Several planning issues were discussed including the transformation of Rossington Hall from a school to a hotel. They also discussed the Section 106 money from the Inland Port development that is to be used for training in the village. We, the Parish Council, hope for a brighter and better future with the whole village being involved in our projects and the rebirth of the pride in our village across all age groups. Working together will bring a much better future for us all.

Rossington Councillor's Update Bankwood Play Area is nearly finished, sorry it's late but we've had problems. We got the installation and soft surface for free so we can't really argue. Yet again a part built park has been vandalised, the slide has been set on fire. Recycoal Ltd. have published plans to remove the coal from the pit tip, they will then landscape the area contouring the land creating paths and planting 60,000 trees. They will also create enough allotments to suit our needs and when this is completed restore and renew the lane to Wadworth. Operate Anticipate is ongoing to reduce ASB's over the bonfire night period. A midnight football league is starting on 4th November and a laser quest night has also been organised. After a summer of anti-social behaviour, burglaries and criminal damage it has settled down. Operation Alliance saw some criminals arrested and ASB's cut. Drugs, stolen goods were recovered and the area around Radburn Road has settled down. Meadow Court's occupants have nearly all been re-housed in houses of their choice. When all occupants have been re-settled to satisfactory homes the Meadow Court will be demolished and rebuilt to a more 'user friendly' sheltered accommodation with modern, future proof facilities. Holmescarr has received funding that will enable much needed work to be carried out. This will open up the building to more users. The Opportunity Centre is now recognised as the best in Doncaster getting more people into work than any other. It will be used as and example for all others to follow. If you are unemployed why not try out the Opportunity Centre? The boxing club, now named 'Doncaster South Boxing Club' is a huge success. The numbers attending is exceeding all expectations. Thanks for all the volunteers and Neighbourhood services and finally to all those who contributed to their funds. The Brick pond fishing club have been given money to restock the lake from the Councillors' flexible budget. Better fishing for all. A night fishing syndicate is starting to stop illegal fishing and ASB.

Kindest Regards

Richard Cooper-Holmes - Your Labour Councillor

A Grand Day Out

The St Leger wasn’t the only thing that was grand about September in Doncaster this year as Gary and Michelle Gee opened the doors on the restoration of the magnificent Rossington Hall and gardens. With a history of over 200 years, the property has been unoccupied in recent years and has fallen into a sad state. However, Gary and Michelle have plans to return it to its former opulent glory and were absolutely overawed that around 1500 came to see what has been achieved so far. The visitors were not disappointed! Whilst work has only been on-going for only a couple of months, the transformation so far from a school - (its most recent guise) to a splendid Victorian residence is quite astonishing. On the outside, the wonderful (and once hidden) Italian sunken gardens have been uncovered, a beautiful lily pond is being restored, rose gardens being brought back to their former glory, majestic oaks and impressive red-woods revealed and the gatehouse is being restored. Visitors were also able to look around the original Victorian stables, now used by the Northern Racing College. However, the inside certainly brought the loudest gasps as the glory of the hall was unveiled. Rooms such as the grand entrance hall, master bedroom, library, dining room and drawing room delighted visitors as they wandered around seeing plans, drawings and mood boards which brought to life Gary and Michelle’s passion and vision for the restoration. But what no one expected was the dining room. Not just a plan – a reality! The Rossington Hall team pulled out all the stops to complete its restoration in time for the open day, treating the visitors to a real feast for the eyes. Hours and hours of work, including traditional French polishing and other master crafts brought the room back to its splendid Victorian glory. Polished oak panelling, hand made curtains in authentic sumptuous fabric, luxuriant wall paper, an imposing fireplace crafted to its original design, hand built chandelier and original style antique furniture, crockery and silverware all brought this glorious room to life. No wonder its was buzzing throughout the afternoon. Entertained by Markham Main Colliery Band and refreshments, visitors were tremendously encouraging with their comments. Shared memories from former residents such as the daughter of a previous headmaster for whom a visit to her former bedroom brought tears to her eyes, were a real treasure. Another previous teacher was delighted to find his 1982 signature on the stripped back wall of the library! As work continues and interest increases, it is clear that the public have a special place in their heart for Rossington Hall. You can follow the restoration on the web site at www.rossingtonhall.co.uk, on Facebook at RossingtonHall or on Twitter @RossingtonHall.

Attempts are being made to forge stronger links between Senior and Junior football in the village. This is not a new venture as some locals may recall the existence of Station F.C. and their junior sides of the 1980's, but here at Rossington Main F.C. we are very appreciative of the voluntary work put in by managers and parents in the development of youth football and the opportunities provided by the local schools. We are pleased that current and ex-senior players have already committed to running Junior sides, and in July of this year we helped entertain a touring American youth team (run by ex-Main player Chris Howe) when they travelled from their tour base in Manchester to play an U.14 friendly on our ground. I am also currently in the process of arranging a meeting between all concerned parties whereby the development of football from an early age up to senior level and links to coach education and funding can be discussed. Just like the Cricket Team our 1st team are now playing at a standard where other Clubs are paying their players. At Rossington Main F.C. we survive financially from year to year because our players are not paid and much of the improvement and repair work at the ground is carried out by a small group of committed volunteers. Although we are indebted to a small band of sponsors the costs of running a Club at this level would surprise many, and therefore it is essential we continue our amateur policy. With certain footballers at this level becoming "mercenary", we are reliant on developing young players and to this end the Club currently run 4 teams, the 1st team being supplemented by a 2nd team and 2 youth sides at U.19 and U.17 level - the U.17 side being a continuation of the Juniors' Under 16 squad the previous season. At senior level we have made our best start to a season for many years. At the time of writing our 2nd team have a 100% record from 8 games, and our 1st team, although out of the F.A.Cup and F.A.Vase, have only suffered 1 defeat in their League programme of 7 games played so far. Most of our senior personnel are local lads and consequently our support is very much Rossington-based. We average about 50-60 through the turnstile for a 1st team fixture but on the odd occasion we can top 100 when the opposition are favourably supported, which would meet our costs for staging a home game, once match officials' fees and other overheads are met. This is where we make our plea to attempt to encourage more people down to the ground

on match days. If you are already a regular supporter then entice a friend or colleague. If you enjoy watching live football as opposed to the televised edition, then get out and have a walk and get some fresh air and make your way down to Oxford Street. You may be pleasantly surprised by the standard of football at a fraction of the cost. You will be made welcome by the gateman, you can select your own vantage point to watch the game, you can enjoy the friendly banter (no segregation at this level) and you can indulge in our matchday hospitality of bar and refreshments facilities without the queue or rush. I always wondered where the Doncaster Rovers' fans went when there is no fixture at the Keepmoat - I know some follow their team away but if you are at a loose end come down to Oxford Street, you will be made welcome. Below is our HOME November fixture list such as it stands at present. It could be subject to change, visit our website for up-dates (www.pitchero.com/clubs/rossingtonmain) Sat. Nov. 5th v. Worsbrough Bridge HOME 3-00p.m. Sat. Nov.12th v. Appleby Frodingham HOME 3-00p.m. Tues. Nov.15th v. Pontefract Collieries HOME 7-45p.m. Sat. Nov.26th v. Louth Town HOME 3-00p.m. 2nd team games are published by their league on a monthly basis but they will generally be at home on the vacant Saturdays above. Be advised that they kick-off at 2p.m. during November and December. Admission to 2nd team games is free but with usual refreshment facilities available. 1st team admission is £4 with concessions at £2. We hope to see you there..... Ian Wilson (Asst. Manager) 30th September saw a superb evening at Rossington Miners Welfare. Rossington Juniors held a race night with pie n pea supper. With over 180 guests, the evening was a great family fun night for all age groups. The committee would like to thank the sponsors of the evening races, they were Tesco distribution, Co-Op, Next, Sports Direct, H&B News of Wilkinson Avenue, and Crush Hair and Beauty also of Wilkinson Avenue Rossington who were really generous with a £50 voucher donated for the main race. Also a big thanks to the Rossington Miners Welfare for use of the services. Next event is the Juniors Christmas party Saturday 10th December at the Welfare. See you all there!

Friends of Brodsworth Way

Due to circumstances, partly beyond our control, we had to cancel the Hallowe'en event we were planning. I hope this wasn't too much of a disappointment. The responsibility for the Brodsworth Way Pavilion had been changed from our local safer neighbourhood team to the parks department of the Council and we were left wondering whether our bookings were safe. Unfortunately, I didn't find out for definite until 10th October which left it too late for our plans. Notwithstanding the above, we are now considering a Christmas table top sale in early December and will, in due course, contact the people who had tables in our August sale to see if they want to participate again. Our next FoBW meeting will be on Monday 14th November, 7pm in the Brodsworth Way Pavilion. If you are new to the estate, this group represents the interest of the local residents. For more information, contact Susan 01302 869001.

Basic Skills Quality Mark at Tornedale This summer Rossington Tornedale Infant School’s staff, children, parents and governors were proud to receive the Basic Skills Quality Mark. This is a nationally recognised accreditation and reflects the hard work of all the staff to achieve the award as well as the good attitude to learning that children develop whilst at Tornedale. Seen on the photo are Benjamin Morley and Kasey Clark, both Year 2 pupils together with Mrs Wild (Head).
