Welcome to the

November

Excellent customer reviews

2016 edition

“It is not happy people who are thankful, it is thankful people who are happy” I know that we don’t celebrate thanksgiving in the UK but this quote still seemed appropriate for our November introduction! Being grateful for what you have is such an easy way to be happy. You may not have as much as someone else (let’s face it, we can’t all be Kardashians — and honestly, would you really want to be?), but once you really look at the things in your life that you value; perhaps it’s your health, your family, your friends — you’ll realise that riches don’t always come in the form of money. By making a point of focussing on all the good already present in our lives we cultivate positivity and increase our happiness. This issue sees the start of some Christmas mentions. Where has 2016 gone? I can’t believe that Christmas is already on its way. Maybe it is an indication of my age that years some to fl y by so much quicker than they used to! The December issues will be delivered to you late November. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 11th November. This is of course the Christmas issue and it is always a jam packed issue, full of annual events, Christmas fairs and celebrations. Please do ensure that you do get your times to me in good time if you have something you would like included. Enjoy November and I will be back in a months’ time with your December magazine.

Best wishes,

Paula x

Cause for a Cuppa! Hello again from Cause for a Cuppa. Can you believe we are already into November (or nearly so). Clocks have gone back and the nights will grow long. Sometimes people struggle. As an engineer in the States, I worked 8-5. During the winter, it was dark when I arrived and dark when I left. My only glimpse of the sun was a little walk during dinner time. I’d like to think about this for just a bit today. 7KLV PLJKW DÎ? HFW \RX RU VRPHRQH \RX NQRZ The Rio Olympics are now written in the history books with all the stories they inspired. There is one you may or may not have heard about. If you know the name, “Michael Phelpsâ€?, the twist in his story is the shocker. Phelps is an American swimmer with the most career Olympic golds (by far) at 23. He has wowed the world with his incredible list of achievements in the water. However you may not realise it but he was DUUHVWHG IRU '8Ζ 6HSW VXÎ? HUHG GHSUHVVLRQ and considered suicide around that same time. Thankfully a friend was able to encourage him to check into a rehab facility. Phelps was given a book, Purpose Driven Life which dramatically changed his perspective and life. He got his head straight, started properly training and went on to win gold in Rio. You would probably be wondering how such a thing could happen. Me too. It is a long and somewhat complicated answer. I have my own thoughts but that is not what I want to focus on just now. reasons is part of who we are as people. We talked a bit about this back when Robin Williams took his own life. Mental health is a real issue. If you are battling over continued depressed feelings, please see your GP. If you can’t do that, talk with a friend ‌ someone you can trust. It is a dark, lonely road and you don’t need to be on it alone. There are other times (and we ALL experience these times) when life just gets on top of you. Finances get tight. Problems with your partner. Problems with the children. Problems with people at work, neighbours ‌ all sorts of things and you just get down. You might struggle sleeping or eating properly for a while. You don’t have clinical depression but are just feeling down. Can I also say that those sorts of feelings are part of being “normalâ€? as well. That strategy may not work every time. Let me leave you with one last thought on this before we go ‌ The sun will come up tomorrow. So you gotta hang on till tomorrow, come what may. Put one foot in front of the other. Prepare that meal. Pick up your child at school. Get through the day at work. You never know what a day may bring. Update from Councillor

Rachael Blake An eventful month with a packed meeting organised by the Parish Council to give residents their opportunity to voice their concerns about Bankwood Lane along with busy surgeries where I could assist residents with their individual problems. The end of October with Halloween, and Bonfire Night and a Christmas market giving residents of all ages the chance to get involved in community activities – more details are provided below. IPORT ACADEMY AND OPPORTUNITIES When I first became a councillor, there was scepticism amongst some about the Iport and in particular the Iport Academy. 16 months later it is really good to see the Iport developing with companies moving in and the Academy being able to assist with getting some of these jobs as well as providing training right here in the village. To find out more, have a look on their Facebook page or website or just call in to see George at the academy based at Miners Welfare. People I have spoken to have been impressed with the service provided and what is being offered is only going to get more and more once new businesses move in. ROSSINGTON CEMETERY I visit the cemetery every week to check on progress. A regular visitor asked me if the area around the bin could be paved to stop problems that occur in the wet winter months and the cemetery manager has agreed to do this. Another big problem was the overgrowth of the trees and bushes on the path up to the steps. This is now being tidied up and I have asked the Street Scene team to litter pick the bin area on a regular basis to try to keep it tidy. It was good to see that when I visited last time there wasn’t any dumped rubbish along the lane. LITTER AND FLY TIPPING This continues to be a problem in a few areas in the village not helped by green box collections day when the contents of some boxes end up in the street. I have been contacted about the problems on Rufus Lane which I am in regular contact with DMBC about. Clearing up the fly tipped rubbish every time is not solving the cause of the problem and I have asked for more preventative action to be taken so that residents understand their responsibilities for disposing of their unwanted items. The area around the market and The Royal has been brought to my attention as well and the Street Scene team have now increased the frequency of their work in this area. Please do let me know about areas that are of particular concern to you. BANKWOOD LANE This meeting was well attended and it was a shame that the meeting had to be ended early which prevented the majority of residents from voicing their many concerns. A further meeting has been arranged which is advertised elsewhere in the magazine and I hope many residents attend this. It was good to see that following a complaint 10 ROSSINGTON TODAY

DMBC Councillor

from a resident the grassed area which was obscuring the view for residents coming out of Bankwood Crescent onto West End Lane has now been cut back. The solution of the additional direct road was good to hear but this is not a short term solution. Attero have now submitted a retrospective planning application for the existing lorry park for a further 18 months. I know many residents object to this lorry park – if you do, you need to make your objections to DMBC planning. Here is the link that will take you to the make a comment page - http://planning. doncaster.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails. do?activeTab=makeComment&keyVal=ODV1XAFX05E00 you just need to put in your details and why you object and press submit. EVENTS IN ROSSINGTON There are Halloween events on 29 and 31 October at Miners Welfare and Holmescarr, the Parish Council has their annual Bonfire at Miners Welfare on 5 November with a fair and inside there will be entertainment and a disco. 20 November is the date for the Christmas Market at Miners Welfare so please do get in touch with Mandy if you would like to have a stall. ST LEGER CAR PARKING SCHEMES A number of areas have been put forward for St Leger to put in car parking – your views on what you feel are the priority areas for the village would be very welcome, so please do contact me. NEW HOUSES The new properties on Wildflower were completed and advertised on St Leger Homes for bidding from residents. These properties do give priority to Rossington residents and due to changes in legislation building new council properties is only happening in a few areas so it is really good that Rossington is one of those areas that will benefit. MY SURGERIES Unfortunately I am not going to be able to do a surgery in November but they will start again in December. I am very happy to meet with residents at any time, day or evening, so if you have a problem, concern, suggestion or question please do get in touch. Tel: 07976896563/01302 710251: Email: Rachael.blake@ doncaster.gov.uk As I say every month, I have so many things going on, but can’t include them all so please do contact me. If you are a member of a group I would be very happy to come along to one of your meetings

Kind regards

From 12 Nov 2016 in the Graves Art Gallery: ‘Grayson Perry, Comfort Blanket’ a chance to see in the flesh the 8 metre tapestry. www.museums-sheffield.org.uk

Sheffield City Hall 10 Nov at 7.30pm - Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall - ‘Grayson Perry: Typical Man in a Dress’ The award-winning artist, Bafta-winning TV presenter, Reith Lecturer and bestselling author with traditional masculine traits like a desire to always be right and to overtake all other cyclists when going up big hills. So what is masculinity and what can it become? It might seem almost redundant in a world facing climate change and vast imbalances in global wealth, but Grayson Perry sees masculinity as a highly active component in all the big issues. Alongside the release of his new book, ‘The Descent of Man’, join Grayson for an intelligent evening of laughs, discussion, in sight and costume changes. www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

Community Hello from Mayflower Sanctuary, Thank goodness our awful few weeks passed without any fatalities. Even though we worked with two local vets it is still unclear why our dogs became ill. Our kennel assistants and volunteers worked tirelessly keeping further infection at bay. We are now back to work as usual with no lasting effects. Our vets bills were well over £3,500 and we had a huge appeal for donations on our internet page. Donations came flooding in, thank you seems such a small gesture for such a large response, but without all of your donations we would have really struggled with this extra high bill. But THANK YOU all so much for all the support we have had from the most amazing people, you literally were life savers. Moving on now, all but 2 of our puppies have been adopted, but we have the most adorable kittens available now. It is a little late for kittens’ season as they usually appear in the spring when the days are longer, but obviously nature has turned upside down this year. If you would like to come along with a view to adopting them Penny our cattery Manager will be happy to have a chat and show you all the cats and kittens that are available to adopt. We would all like to thank Johnjo Defty who ran the Vale of York Half Marathon on Sept the 11th. He raised a massive £560, this was his first half Marathon but completed it in good time. A fantastic achievement so well done. We are very grateful, we now think you need a bit of a rest before you start training for the next one!! Don't forget we have a shop in our reception area, so if your pooch needs a cosy coat as the cold days are coming this is the place to be. We have a lovely selection of hand knitted coats all sizes. Also dog toys, bowls, blankets and many more cat and dog paraphernalia. I have adopted another dog from Mayflower she is a cross Pointer and she has been a street dog in Cyprus, she has lived on the streets and latterly in a shelter in Cyprus for all of her 4 years. She has never lived in a home so as you can imagine I

Finding a forever home was expecting a few teething problems and more than one or two puddles! However she is the cleanest most subservient beautiful girl ever. She has had to fight to survive and has lots of scars on her lovely face. She has also had her fair share of puppies. Well, no more, she has now been spayed she is also understanding a little English and learning her name. We already have a Spaniel that is becoming her best friend and 3 cats that she is taking absolutely no notice of. I did imagine the worse, cats climbing up the curtains and swinging from light fittings to keep away from her. However it hasn't happened, it is all quite harmonious, which is a bonus. She is enjoying the routine and cuddling into her new basket in an evening. The only thing that does worry her are loud noises (bonfire night is approaching eek !!) and she is also frightened of children. Which leads you to believe she could have been teased or badly treated by them. But she does love grown ups and other dogs. It will take a while for her confidence to grow but watch this space for more. If you are thinking of adopting a cat or dog please come along and speak to us we will point you in the right direction and make sure the dog or cat you are choosing is the right one for you. Many thanks to everyone that has left towels and blankets in my garage they will come in very handy now that the chilly weather is around the corner. Last but not least please remember to keep your cats in on the run up to Bonfire night and the night itself as the loud bangs seems to go on forever. Keep your animals safe as it can be a terrifying time for all animals. Our telephone number if you need us is 01302 711330. Hope to see you soon

I live in the office but it gets very lonely here when the staff go home. I wish I could have a home of my own with a family to love. I need to be an only pet as I’m not very good around other dogs. I don’t like cats or other small furries at all. That way I can have all the fuss and don’t have to share.... Any children in my new home would ideally be over 10 as I can get very boisterous at times. I travel well and walk very nicely on the lead Please come and visit me during our opening times Just ask to meet me - I'll be waiting Roxy x

Name: Brandy Female Sex: Date into care: 29/05/2015 Age on arrival: ? Good with dogs: ? Good with cats: No Lived with children: ? I am a very excitable girl that loves plenty of cuddles and affection. I have not had a great start to life at all so am in desperate need of a loving family to show me what it feels like to be loved and cared for. I have to walk with a muzzle in wooded areas as I try to pull at branches. I have not had much socialisation with dogs so will need some training. A loyal companion through and through. I do travel well. I have lived with older children.

community Garden View

Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between n neighbours over this very issue down the yearss and the main cause of aggro seems to be the e humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy y fencing panels over the years, there really iss nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an n otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and d cities. Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen n IRU IUXLW DQG ČľRZHUV IRRG Even the much maligned Leyland cypress hass D SDUW WR SOD\ ΖW FDQ SURYLGH D EULOOLDQW EXÎ?HU U DJDLQVW WUDÉ?F QRLVH IRU D VWDUW DQG ZLOO VFUHHQ unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September. This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife.

I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds. November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter. Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. p Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture. You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.

Now that the Fun Palace is complete, we will be working on the content of the May Day Parade, and Handmade Parades will be supplying artists to help with creating costumes, and other craft pieces at our workshops, to be held at a variety of venues around the village, again with funding to give free participation.

Handmade Parades helped with the arts and crafts for last year’s Halloween Parade, and they were back this year with some of their giant models, but led a workshop making robots with LED lights for eyes. Continuing the space and futuristic theme that decorated the corridors at Holmescarr, the Scouts helped children to create their spacemen with sweets. At the other end of the hall, there were proud faces on the children walking away from a workshop where they decorated gingerbread men. They didn’t want to eat them until everyone at home had seen their handiwork. More pieces were being created in the Holmescarr classroom, and in the quad. The MANM Arts & Craft Club is held weekly on Monday 6pm - 8pm at Skipworth Community Centre (Behind the Catholic Church) in Rossington.

This month, we have updated the item about St Michael’s Little Angels, and added in some of the work of Albert Horsman. Albert used to contribute to the free newspaper that was called ‘Village Life’, under the name of Marshal Bronte. We have EHHQ JLYHQ D Č´ OH RI KLV SRHPV ZKLFK FRYHU D ZLGH range of topics, including some about Rossington. They came from Albert’s family, Mr and Mrs John Bruce ,and there may be more to come, as Albert PRYHG WR 6KHÉ? HOG DQG VRPH RI KLV ZRUN ZHQW with him. There is one about the market as it used to be in his time, and one related to schooldays. One of our team put together a folder of the work he has done on the 1838 Rossington Hall sale, with photographs, drawings, and written work, so that those visiting the Fun Palace on 1 October could see the information in one booklet. There were people visiting who were unaware of the sale, and were interested in the breadth of knowledge in that one piece of work. There is a new article added to the website DERXW WKH &RUČ´ HOG IDPLO\ IURP /LWWOHZRUWK Lane, who bought a property when there was a second sale in 1938 of largely the same lots. The display board in the library has been updated with new photos donated by people who would like to share their memories, and these will be added to the website after display. As we are trying to represent past, present and future, some of the photos are recent. If you have memories and photos you would like to see on the website, or in the display box, contact Elaine Spencer on 07771 672561 and we’ll arrange to meet or collect from you, returning anything that you loan to us. If you like photographing around Rossington and have present day pictures we can upload and display, we would love to hear from you. Contact Keith Scott via his Old Rossington Photos Facebook page if you would like him to give a talk and bring his albums for showing. 38 ROSSINGTON TODAY

As I am sure you are all aware, the hedgehog is on the decline. The hedgehog is one of the gardener’s best friends, in that they eat slugs. I wish I had an array (collective noun for the hedgehog) in my veg patch. They are unobtrusive and GLVFUHWH DV WKH\ VQXÉž H DURXQG DQG D VLWLQJ LV D rare thing and a cause for great excitement.

Hedgehogs are found across the UK, but not in the Scottish isles. But they are in decline, their population numbers have dipped by 30% in the last 10 years. This is only partly due to road-deaths, much of it is loss of habitat due to development and modern agricultural practice. At this time of year, they are packing up for the winter, and will be tucked up in a nice warm and dry spot for the long winter sleep. This is where you come in.
