Welcome to the October edition of ROSSINGTON TODAY. TODAY

How the months are flying by this year, already leaves are starting to fall from the trees and the days are getting so much shorter. I’m still wearing my Fitflops but I think that the time has come to put them away and get out my winter boots! I think that this issue is a Christmas free zone, however next month is sure to be full of Christmas themed adverts. The November and December magazines are always very popular so don’t leave it too late to contact me if you would like to book an advert in either edition. The November edition will be delivered from 30th October. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included in it is with me by Friday 15th October.

Best Wishes, Paula

Cause for a Cuppa Hello to all again! It has been great to hear of several who mention to me in passing or whateverwhichway (not sure if that is a proper word) that you read the little article in Rossington Today. I have really enjoyed sharing with you a bit of what I have picked up along the journey of Dad-hood, stuff that has worked and some of my blunders as well. Novembers are not very fun. It has nothing to do with cold or Christmas (I like that bit!). I bought our car in November … 8 years ago. Since that time, I have had the great experience of going through the yearly “wonderful” experience of an MOT. In the beginning it wasn’t too bad. It was newER and the paint actually still had a shine on it. I could pretty much bank on being able to drive it there, hang about for the hour or two (well, you know how that goes) and leave with a sigh of relief that another year’s MOT is sorted. But over the last few years it has been a bit of a different story. “Sorry Mr. Simpson but it failed because …...and it will cost £….. to get it sorted.” It wouldn’t be my first choice for an afternoon “out”. But in reality, it IS IMPORTANT. There are bits of my car the mechanic looks at to ensure that it is safe to drive, keeping my family safe as well. It was important for me to invest some of my time and energy. Thinking about how that may relate to us as parents. We go through the yearly MOT because we HAVE to but really it is a good thing to do as well. As parents, there is no MOT. But starting 4th November we are offering a 6 week Positive Parenting course. Even if you are not experiencing a parental breakdown or rough running, all parents need a bit of a tune up or encouragement AND it is great fun!. Our taster session went off brilliantly and this will now be the full-on course. Please contact me if you are keen to come along or need more information (Eric Simpson, eric@communitybaptist.co.uk, 867904, 07828141472)

ROSSINGTON HISTORY GROUP. Soldier burials in Rossington. For centuries, the Great North Road has been a major thoroughfare and as such has been used by armies marching to do battle during the different conflicts that have affected the country. The people of Rossington will have witnessed these movements and, on occasions, may have been called upon to provide “hospitality”. Recently, Roy Venables, the secretary of the history group, discovered that two soldiers involved in the English Civil War were buried at Rossington and decided to try to find out more. The following is the result of Roy’s investigations. On 5th December, 1648, Nicholas Hurrot of Wells in Somerset was buried near St. Michael’s Church, Rossington. Trooper Hurrot was serving under the command of Captain John Barker of Lieutenant General Cromwell’s Regiment. What events in the English Civil War brought the unfortunate Trooper Hurrot to Rossington in December 1648? From May to July, the Regiment was engaged in the siege of the Royalist castle at Pembroke. The Royal garrison finally surrendered on 11th July, 1648. Leaving South Wales, unpaid, shoeless and ragged, the army had procured shoes in Northampton and stockings in Coventry, arriving in Doncaster on 8th August. Nicholas Hurrot must have ridden from Doncaster through Pontefract, Wetherby, Otley, Skipton and Gisburn before this decisive battle. Prior to November, Cromwell had resided at Wildbore House, Knottingley, to deal with the final siegethof Pontefract Castle, the last significant Royalist stronghold. This fortress was not to fall until 24 March, 1649, long after the departure of Cromwell, Nicholas Hurrot and the trial and execution of the King. On 28th, November, Cromwell was summoned to London to attend a conference to determine future policy. At this time, King Charles 1 was in captivity at Hurst Castle near Southampton. Parliament in London was impotent but uncooperative with regard to the action to be taken against the King. Cromwell entered London on 6th December, the evening after an Army coup called Pride’s Purge which resulted in the “cleaning out” of Parliament by Colonel Pride of 145 MPs who were critical of the Army, leaving a “rump” of 50 MPs. Cromwell declared that he had not “been acquainted with this design; yet since it was done, he was glad of it stand would endeavour to maintain it”. The King was taken to London for his trial on 1 January, 1649 and execution on 30th January, 1649. In 1648, the Civil War had been underway for 6 years. The records of Doncaster show that the Army had passed through the area many times. Soldiers of the time were often underfed, ill clothed and seldom paid. They undertook exhausting marches, found their billets among hostile and unwilling civilians and, when injured, received at best rudimentary medical attention.thAn Army of the time travelled 10 to 15 miles in a day. The records of Doncaster show that on 30 November, 1648, nine shillings were paid for “wine and biskit bestowed on Leften Genrall Cromwell”. Additionally the sum of one shilling and two pence was paid for “two bottles which L Genrall Cromwell men toucke away with them”. It is possible then that Trooper Hurrot died on 5th December at Rossington, having been left behind, sick or wounded, as the Army moved slowly south. From the archives. “August 2nd 1644. A soldier aged about 24 of Coronell Pickering’s Regiment was buryied at Rossington in Yorkshire”. As with Trooper Nicholas Hurrot, buried 4 years later, I wondered how this unknown English Civil War foot soldier came to be buried in Rossington. Colonel John Pickering, the son of Puritan gentry, was born in Titchmarsh in Northamptonshire. His brother Gilbert became Oliver Cromwell’s Lord Chancellor. John was a lawyer who served Parliament on diplomatic duties but in March, 1644 he took command of a newly formed Eastern Association Foot Regiment, recruited in Suffolk and Essex. The Regiment was prominent in the storming of Lincoln in May and the Siege of York in June. On July 2nd, 1644 Colonel John Pickering’s Regiment distinguished itself at the Parliamentary victory at the Battle of Marston Moor, near Tadcaster, in which 46,000 troops fought. After this battle and the surrender of York on 16 th July, the Royalists largely abandoned the north of England. The force of which Pickering’s Regiment was a component marched south towards Lincolnshire. As one of Cromwell’s Ironsides, it is likely that Trooper Hurrot also fought at Marston Moor. The harvest of 1644 was poor owing to a cold wet summer and the shortage of men available to harvest the crops. Passing armies ate up household food supplies. We shall never know if the Unknown Soldier died of wounds obtained during the battle, or sickness, and it seems unlikely that the poor inhabitants of Rossington shed many tears, but, even so, the event was recorded. John Pickering’s Regiment was reduced by casualties, sickness and desertion from about 1,000 to 243 men by January, 1645. It absorbed another depleted Regiment and in April, 1645 it became one of 12 Regiments in the New Model Army fighting in the Siege of Oxford and the Battle of Naseby. Colonel John Pickering, like many of his men, caught the new disease Influenza whist serving near Exeter. He died on 16th November, 1645 and was buried at Lyme Regis. The Regiment, as was the custom, came under the command of his deputy and became Colonel John Hewson’s Regiment of Foot. 8 | ROSSINGTON TODAY

Rossington Parish Council News The September meeting of the Parish Council had a full agenda, it being the first meeting after the summer recess. The Police were not present so the Chairman opened the Public forum where the following issues were raised by members of the Public. (i) Favourable comments were made about the recently published Parish Council newsletter but it would appear that all households had not yet received a copy. The Clerk promised to investigate and remedy the situation. (ii) It was reported that the Dog refuse bins ordered by the Parish Council had now been delivered and should be sited in the near future. (iii) It was also reported that the replacement for the Wadworth Lane bridge demanded by the Parish Council was progressing and D.M.B.C. was in the process of procurement. In the main agenda the Council granted financial assistance to Rossington Environmental Association to help with their activities around the village. The Council agreed the form of response to the Local Government Association’s request for the Councils views on the new Governments proposed policies relative to local Councils. The Council also agreed a form of response to the D.M.B.C.’s Local Development plans relative to Rossington for the next 15 years. In essence the Council felt that, in matters relating specifically to Rossington, the plans had been drawn up by D.M.B.C. in conjunction with parties that appear to have both personal and prejudicial interests in the proposed outcomes. The Council unanimously agreed that the plans should be revised after proper and full consultation with the village residents in order to produce a realistic and achievable plan that will give the most benefit to the whole of the village population. The final item on the agenda was a question and answer session with a representative of Severn Trent Water Authority relative to the problem of sewage contamination in Holmes Carr wood. The outcomes of a very lively and interesting session were:Severn Trent Water Authority had identified the root causes of the contamination as:(a) Collapsed drains in Aberconway and Allenby Crescents that have allowed sewage to contaminate rainwater drains. (b) Illegal connection of sewage drains into rainwater drains at several houses in the area that have had improvement works carried out. (c) The possible illegal dumping into rainwater drains of cesspool contents by companies or persons unknown in the area. Severn Trent Water Authority has already taken steps to remedy the first two causes of the contamination but they have no proof that the third cause has occurred. When questioned about the clearing of the existing contamination, the representative stated that advice from the Environment Agency was that providing further contamination ceased; the best course of action was to do nothing and let nature take its course. At the end of the meeting the Chairman thanked the representative for attending and for his company’s efforts in identifying and commencing to resolve the causes of the contamination that had been of great concern to everyone. 10 | ROSSINGTON TODAY

I would like to start by saying well done to the lads for the win in the first league game of the season. We went with a scratch 15 and came away with the win showing a lot of character, even though injury reduced the team to 14 (Scott Feeney) and the sin binning further reduced the side to 13, for 10 minutes in the second half. Tom Walters and Ben Hurford both put in good performances in positions they had never played before and an inexperienced second row of Steven Neagle and Callan Nicolson played well against opponents that had clearly played that position for a while. Graham Parkin continued his points scoring from last season with a tally of 12 points, Lee Johnson chipped in with 2 try’s. Rhys Bailey got the man of the match for his hard hitting defence and defence splitting running. The final score was 25-27 with Rossington scoring 4 tries to the home teams 1. The following week was started with the arrival of the new kit just in time for the first home game of the season, with Sheffield Oaks the visitors. The Hornets were again depleted and with a different few faces took to the field. The game did not go to plan for the Hornets with a disappointing result and for the second week a man spending 10 minutes in the bin. This time the defence couldn’t hold the Sheffield side and they were able to put on 12 points with the Hornets reduced to 14 but the positives to take from the game were that Aaron Haxell returned from injury to play most of the game and veteran Barry Richardson made his first start of the season. A Cup game interrupted the midweek training and Rossington entertained a Rawmarsh side who had put in a big result against Stocksbridge the previous weekend. The Rossington team buoyed by players returning from injury and work commitments were able to present their coach’s with selection dilemmas. Rawmarsh have always been a bit of a bogey team for the Hornets but Rossington started strongly and this was quickly rewarded by points on the board; the scrum played well against a much bigger opposition and with the dangerous three quarters were always on the front foot. Taking nothing away from Rawmarsh they were able and very willing opponents but good defence and some scrabbling defence enabled the Rossington side to run out winner 34-10. Special mention to Sam Millward making his debut and topping it off with a try. The weekend was an away game at Stocksbridge but with the moral on a high after the win against Rawmarsh, hopes were high for a good away win. Things didn’t go to plan and Rossington returned home having had 2 men sent to the sin bin but with a bad defeat of 16-0 against a team they would of hoped to start a winning habit, the feeling among the players was that we hadn’t even turned up and we had underperformed badly. The weekend of the 25th brings the visit to the welfare of early league leaders Wensleydale. Hopefully the hornets will be able to regroup and get their season back on track.

Holmescarr Happenings It has been great to see an increasing number of people through the doors of the Holmescarr Community Centre. The outdoor seating area in the quadrangle is getting good use as a new feature. The garden area in the quadrangle is looking very nice and the vegetables that were planted earlier are maturing. The jobs notice board area has been a huge draw as well as the presence of Doncaster Refurnish. If it has been some time since you have called in, why not come in for another look around. New things are happening all the time! Talking about new things, a new venture is in the making. The Holmescarr House of Play is now becoming a reality. A while ago we did some survey work through two schools about the need for an indoor active play area (similar to an Astrabound). The response was overwhelmingly positive. Some time ago we sponsored a technology challenge with the village schools to actually come up with design ideas. The good news is that we are actively pursuing funding to make this a reality. A 3D model has been made of the area to give an idea of what it will look like and is displayed at Holmescarr. We also have a FACEBOOK presence (hhouseofplay@gmail.com, “House of Play”). Why not visit us, “like” us to get the updates? Let us know your thoughts and ideas. It will be great!

Mayflower Animal Sanctuary. Narrow Lane Bawtry Doncaster The leaves are falling from the trees and summer is like a long distant memory. It is a good feeling knowing that we have re homed so many cats and dogs this year, and so many wonderful people have made this possible. But the list goes on, we re home one dog and there are two or even three to take its place. We hate to think what would happen to all these lovely dogs and cats if it wasn't for Sanctuaries like ours throughout the country. A dog that needs our help at the moment is Doug, he is a Pointer that has been involved in a road traffic accident that has left him with a badly disfigured face and blind in one eye. He is a young dog only one or two years old, he is a pleasant happy boy that loves to play and is good with other dogs. If you are calling at the Sanctuary please ask to see him, it is really heart-warming to see how some animals cope with a disability. The dog warden brought Kylie to us. She is a Staffy cross and still a puppy around 5 months old. This puppy is so depressed she wont lift her head up from her bed. She has one of the worst cases of flea alergy's that we have seen, she is totally infested with them . She has only a small amount of fur left on her body all you see is skin that is dry, broken and bleeding .She will need specialist medication and treatment for quite some time but we hope she will make a full recovery. The dog warden has also brought us a litter of one day old puppies with their mum who is a rough coated cross breed, at least she is safe now and has the opportunity of rearing her little ones in a loving environment. Always the bridesmaid never the bride that's what Ellie is. She is a small collie cross around three and a half years old, she is good with other dogs and children, but always seems to get over looked when we have visitors . Please ask to see her if you are looking for that special pet. We still have lots of beautiful cats and kittens ready for adoption . One kitten was recently found on a building site with maggots eating away at it. This very lucky kitten was taken straight to the vets and is now on the road to recovery. We are looking for a foster home for an elderly cat, she has health issues which we will continue to provide for. She is ten years old and is a pretty Calico colour. Can you help give her a loving home and a warm bed, that is all she will ask for. The next fund raiser we are looking forward to is our annual sponsored dog walk in Bawtry forest. Everyone is welcome. If you need any sponsor forms please give us a call . Please come along and support us, this is a beautiful forest and a wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning . So put the 10th October in your diary and join us to make this another successful fund raiser. In the next few weeks we will be re organising our charity shop in Manton, so if you are looking for that Christmas gift that wont break the bank come along and have a browse . Our volunteers will be pleased to see you. If you have any really good quality items or unwanted gifts please donate them to our shop we will be very grateful. Our new website is at last up and running. You will find us at www.mayflowersanctuary.co.uk. Please call the Sanctuary on 01302711330 or Mags 07969203206 if you would like any further information about our Sanctuary 18 | ROSSINGTON TODAY

Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield has confirmed that easyJet would not be flying from the airport from 4th January 2011. Nick Smillie, Aviation Sales Director for Peel Airports, said: “We are naturally very disappointed by easyJet’s decision to withdraw flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport” “Operational restrictions, largely due to the fact that the aircraft is not Doncaster based, have affected the viability of the operation. For example, the timings of certain key flights have affected their attractiveness to the region’s business community – a key source of passengers and revenues. “However, where schedules have been favourable, aircraft have been flying up to 99 percent full. This provides us with strong evidence of demand for flights from Doncaster Sheffield. “We are already talking to a number of alternative airlines regarding these and other potential new routes and are confident that many will be re-instated in the near future.” This has been another successful Summer for Doncaster Sheffield Airport in terms of the growing leisure market, with new routes already announced for 2011. Despite today’s news, the Airport remains confident that it can build on its existing business, attracting further new airlines and routes in the coming months.

Rossington Cricket Club – October News A very successful 2010 season has now drawn to a close with the club capturing both the South Yorkshire League Division 2 and Doncaster & District Section B league titles to add to the Infirmary Evening League Cup already captured. The SYCL Div 2 title being the club’s second promotion winning campaign in three years (sandwiched by a cup win also) that see’s the club return to Division 1 for the first time in twelve years and a very competitive level of amateur, club cricket. The First XI success was compounded by the Second XI capturing their league title after narrowly missing out last season and will mean that the overall standard of cricket being played on Saturday’s is bolstered across the board which we hope will be the catalyst for an extended period of good times for the club…. The First XI captured the division with 18 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat from 22 games to finish above rivals Wath well clear of the rest. Wins over Wickersley, Hallam and Maltby along with a washout at Warmsworth securing the title. Pete Harvey smashed 104* from 64 deliveries against Hallam and Mick Richardson celebrated his recall to the big time with 4-5 against Maltby to make the final day task all the easier. Special mention must go however to the away day victory at giants Wickersley where we successfully chased down the 251-6 set by the hosts to put ourselves firmly in pole position for the title. Andrew Gardiner and Greg Mann leading the run chase with 64* and 53 respectively……Andrew smashing the final delivery for 6 with 5 required for victory…..needless to say – the natives were restless! The Second XI suffered a surprise defeat at Whiston on the penultimate weekend following a victory the previous week over Hatfield Main which meant the race was closer than it needed to be but a comprehensive 10 wicket victory over Brookhouse secured a second title in 2010. Stuart Brown and youngster Sam Roby capping a fine season by knocking the runs off. A record of 12 wins and 2 draws from 16 games was enough to again keep Wath in second place. The Third XI have finished the season like a train but the campaign was derailed when the weather washed out the final game of the season away at Barnby Dun when a victory may have seen a third club promotion of the season! Two victories over Upper Haugh and Stainborough had preceded the washout, Tom Green with 55 at Upper Haugh (Rawmarsh) and Tom Forster capturing 4-4 against Stainborough. Wath did gain some revenge in the Under 15 Bank Holiday Tournament for the Sid Raw Memorial Shield where they were victorious over last years winners Barnby Dun in the final with Rossington and Haxey completing the round robin format field. Rossingtons Tom Green captured both the batting and bowling awards on the day! All of this silverware will be awarded at the clubs annual presentation evening which will take place Saturday 20th November, 7.00pm at The Welfare – further details will follow regarding ticketing etc for the event next month. Club secretary – Brendan Simpson 07812793149 or brenasimpson@aol.com being the best point of contact in the meantime. Finally this month the clubs Cash Draw was made at the BBQ following the final game, lucky winning tickets were as follows: £200 0107, £100 0185, £50 0286 and 0314, £25 0198 and 0051 – all of these winning tickets have been produced and prizes claimed. It now looks like being a busy winter for the club as we strive to achieve the standards off the field that we are achieving on it with regard to facility and junior section development so please keep your eye out for articles and postings regarding various club activities taking place between now and the 2011 season. Brendan Simpson
