Welcome to
Today
the OCTOBER 2014 edition
“The best thing about memories is making them” At the time of writing last month I was about to fly to the Greek island of Zante, for a holiday with not just my immediate family but also 10 other family members. A great time was had by all, my children spent lots of quality time with their cousins, with lots of beach, pool and splash park fun, sea swimming, turtle spotting, ice cream eating! We all made full use of the hotel’s entertainment programme with several T-shirts won in poolside quizzes and certificates for participation in all sorts of activities! My youngest Hannah, came so very close to achieving a Guinness World Record and Charlotte was invited to join the entertainment team on the stage and sing one evening. A great family holiday with many memories created.

The school term is well under way and I am very pleased to report that so far 6th form and secondary are being enjoyed by my eldest and youngest children respectively – long may that last! Last month I forgot to note that the September issue was in fact the 100th issue of Rossington Today! Rossington Today was the 2nd magazine I launched back in 2006. Having failed to celebrate this landmark issue, I have now turned my attention to how to celebrate 10 years of Today Publications early next year. Ideas appreciated! The November issues will be delivered to you late October. If you would like to have something included in this, please make sure details are with me by Friday 10th October.
Enjoy October and I will be back in a months’ time with your November magazine!
Best wishes, Paula x

Things that affect Family life Hello again. I hope you have been able to get back into the swing of “after summer” things and into the “autumn” things. Before long we will be using the “C” word. (I was going to say “Christmas” but I could hear the groans now!) I try to make Cause for a Cuppa a way to talk about different things that affect families and family life. Some are hopefully a bit funny. Some are on the more serious side. It is that second category that I wanted to think about today. A short time ago, many were shocked to hear of the death of actor and comedian Robin Williams. Robin was a master of improvisation. I remember as a teenager, looking forward to the weekly episodes of Mork and Mindy. I have never looked at eggs quite
the same way and “na-no, na-no” will be forever imprinted in my brain. (If you don’t know what I am about, look for “Mork and Mindy” on Youtube.) Mr. Williams took his own life. The news reported it as “death by suicide”. However as more information came out, it became clear that he suffered from depression and the beginning stages of Parkinson’s. Not too long after his passing I saw someone who made the comment ... “he did not die by suicide but from depression”. I think that was a very profound and IMPORTANT statement. The website, “mentalhealth.org.uk” states that 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience some degree of mental health issue this year. Men are 3x more likely to take their lives due to depression. If we think about it, as Rossington has a population of roughly 13,000, more than 3000 Rossington residents have some degree of mental health issues. That is a massive number.
We need to take the whole issue of mental health as something serious and real. It is difficult because we know when someone has a broken arm, a cold or any one of a number of physical problems. Mental illness is one of those “hidden” conditions. It can also carry a stigma that could bring battles for the sufferer as well as the family members. I would like to encourage anyone who is struggling. Be willing to talk with someone. Talk with your GP, a minister, friend or family member. Just as in anything of this nature, admitting your struggle is half the battle. It is important for you to realise that you are not alone. What happened to Robin Williams was a tragedy. What is even worse is that it is a tragedy that could have been avoided. As always, the door is always open and the kettle is on. We are now a bit more accessible at the Holmescarr Centre. The office is just down from the Library and I would love to meet you. See you next month!

Rossington Scouts If we ask the children (and the leaders) what their favourite part of Scouting is most of them would probably say camping. When we were asked if we wanted to attend a camp for the whole of South Yorkshire we jumped at the chance. Jim Paterson, our Group Scout Leader, had the deposit paid within the week and we began preparations. At the end of June our high spirits were crushed when we learned that Jim had passed away suddenly at home. Jim had been involved in Scouting for many years and had held many roles within the movement, not just in Doncaster but also in other countries whilst serving in the Royal Air Force. When Jim wasn’t scouting he was fund raising for his other charity Help for Heroes. He could often be found on the market on a Friday morning selling things that had been donated. His funeral, which was held at Rose Hill, was very well attended. His family and friends were joined by members of the RAF, and Scouters from all over Doncaster. The collection, which was donated to Help for Heroes, raised the amazing amount of £1020. His family would like to thank everyone who contributed. We still went on the camp that Jim had been so eager to attend and the children had a brilliant time but he was missed and will be missed for a long time to come. www.3rddoncaster.ukscouts.org.uk T
To former “Friends of Brodsworth Way” In case anyone was wondering, I am still waiting for the Council to let me know about the bench seat for the football field. Tickhill & District Lions Club We have been busy as usual over the last few weeks with amongst other things the excellent Lions Fun and Sports Day for the Disabled being held at Sandal Park, Doncaster which was as usual well supported and attended with 26 Lions Clubs facilitating the days activities. More recently we were in place with a BBQ at the Tickhill Velo another tremendous local event and your local Lions provided a £500 donation for presentation to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance a most worthy cause that has assisted many people and requires massive funding to continue it's work. We continue to put the monies raised from you and your generous neighbours to good use locally too but at times we must keep detail discreet for the privacy of those we help but be assured our welfare committee works tirelessly to ensure funds are spent appropriately. It seems autumn is upon us and for your local Lions that can only mean one thing, Bonfire Night won't be too far away! This year we are pleased to announce that once again the event will take place in the grounds of the Tickhill Cricket Club and it is to be staged on Saturday 8th November so book us into your diary for what I'm sure will be a spectacular family orientated evening. More details will follow in the next issue but I'm getting excited already..... Can I leave you this month with a gentle friendly reminder. My elderly Mum who lives alone reminded me that during the summer she spends time outside chatting to her neighbours in the garden but soon however the nights will draw in and the weather become colder (and wetter) and she will see people less and less as she stays in where it's warm. Please give a thought for those less mobile and more elderly residents of your lovely village. We all lead such busy lives but it only takes a minute to pick up the phone or drop in on someone you haven't heard from for a while. The Lions motto is 'We Serve' and we endeavour to do so where we can but you can help too by being that good neighbour.

Dear Friends, This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the start of the First World War. My heart goes out to those who sacrificed their lives to make us safe. As we continue to honour and remember their heroisms, I wonder if the generations that have come after them have learnt their lessons. As at the time of writing this piece, I was trying to count the wars that are currently being fought in parts of the world – Libya, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Ukraine, and so on. I also find it difficult to recount the violence that is spotted all over the five or six continents in this world. As a Christian, one of the things that have become the basis of my reflections is the assurance that the Lord Jesus gives us peace. After Jesus had risen from the dead, he appeared to his disciples in the locked upper room, and breathed his peace unto them. After engaging with them for a while, he said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven...” (John 20: 21-23) (New International Version (NIV)). I imagine that if each of us were willing to pursue peace and forgiveness these wars and violent skirmishes that are now frequent in almost every continent would not be in place. I want to draw your attention to the fact that the Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Colossae, reminded them to ‘let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace’ (Colossians 3: 15) (NIV). Being called to peace is a responsibility. I don’t suppose that each of us need to be members of unions or the United Nation’s committees or become politicians in order to be agents of peace. I remember having a conversation with a friend who was blaming one faction for starting a war and justifying the other faction’s response. My reaction was, ‘wait till the missile falls in your bedroom or hall before you consider who to blame’. Let’s remind ourselves that there are no winners in a war, 14
ROSSINGTON TODAY
however justifiable we may think it is. May I suggest that we become agents of peace by expressing our non-violent feelings, opinions, and actions that can go a long way to help the victims of war. One of the ways is to continue to remind the politicians of the need to act in ways of bringing peace to the world. I wonder if you have also considered giving to the charities that are working around the clock in dangerous situations to help overcome the human sufferings in these war-torn areas. What about writing a note to one of the perpetrators if you are in a position of influence. As you celebrate harvest and remember the heroes of wars this autumn, my prayer is that ‘the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 4:7) (NIV). I wonder if I can conclude with a quote from Jesus of Nazareth, which says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God”.(Matthew 5:9) (NIV) God bless you. TROUBLESOME TENDONS
There are many tendons in the body that are prone to becoming problematic – the Achilles in the ankle, the rotator cuff in the shoulder, the patella in the knee and the extensor tendon in the elbow to name but a few. Historically, it was thought that these problems were caused by inflammation and were thus labelled as tendon – itis (itis meaning inflammation) with subsequent treatment aimed at reducing inflammation with anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections. Treatment outcomes were somewhat inconsistent and rarely satisfactory. Recent medical advances mean we now know that the predominant factor in these problems tends to be degeneration of the tendon tissue (tendonosis) with inflammation only occasionally having a minor part to play. Commonly, these problems are now referred to as tendonopathies – a more general term meaning tendon dysfunction. Tendon degeneration occurs when the tendon is under excessive stress and strain which may be as a result of performing a new activity, increasing the frequency of a pre-existing activity or performing an activity during which the body is moving with altered biomechanics (e.g. the Achilles is under excessive strain in the foot with a fallen arch, the patella tendon is under altered load in someone walking or running with a stiff hip). As a result, the tendon becomes painful, thickened, tight, tender and weak. As Physiotherapists, we are in an ideal position to treat tendonopathies successfully. Movement patterns and biomechanics can be assessed and corrected to minimise ongoing strain on the tissue. Manual therapy techniques can reduce the thickening and tightness in the tendon whilst very specific training techniques help to strengthen the tendon tissue. Tendon problems can be stubborn problems but will get better with skilled and thoughtful treatment.

Paying tribute to John Neill,
who lost his battle with cancer during September, Caroline Flint said: “John is a huge loss to Doncaster. Since the success of 2 Grand in 2009, John has shown boundless energy and, with Sallie, became a huge fundraiser for good causes, including the fight against cancer. “John showed that you cannot write someone off in their 60, 70s or even their 80s. He was passionate about helping, a proud trade unionist and socialist and I was honoured that he appeared on my election address in 2010. Rossington can be very proud of his example.” “I wish Sallie and their family the very best, and hope she achieves more success in the future.” T

What a load of rhubarb! Cast your mind back to the fabulous sunny months of April, May and June, when the rhubarb plants were producing delicious stems of juicy fruit, perfectly ripe for crumble. Each of the stems (so technically not a fruit at all) which blushed with the colour of pink champagne or deep raspberry sorbet depending on the variety, could easily be torn from the plant, topped and tailed and then either used immediately or blanched and frozen for later. Rhubarb freezes very well, and lasts for around a year, in fact I made a crumble in April this year using last years frozen harvest. Chopped into 1cm pieces, it can be placed directly into freezer bags, but to retain its colour should be blanched for around 1 minute in boiling water. Allow to cool and dry before freezing. To revive, boil in a little fresh orange juice, a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and sugar to taste before allowing to cool. It’s a versatile crop and makes great jam, compote and crumble, and tastes delicious when made as above and served with crème fraîche. Rhubarb originates from the colder parts of China and its popularity is fairly recent in historical terms, becoming more widely eaten as sugar became less expensive. The 22

leaves are toxic and so too are the stems later on in the year, because the toxic acids move down the stems from the leaves and into the crown as the winter temperatures cool. October is the perfect time to plant rhubarb if you haven’t got any at the moment and would like a patch of your own. It’s quite unfussy and will grow in sun or part shade as long as the soil is moisture retentive. Add well-rotted manure to the planting hole and mulch the plant with a ‘doughnut’ shape of manure about 50cm deep in spring. Give the plant a feed with ‘blood, fish and bone’ in March and watch it grow! It’s an easy perennial plant, which produces giant leaves and is pretty resistant to pests, although hungry mammals might feast on the crowns in early spring when food is scarce. Early rhubarb can be ‘forced’ inside up-turned dust bins, but only do this with established plants. Place a black bin (or terracotta rhubarb forcing jar if you’re a pro) over the plant in early spring, and then enjoy the small, tender and sweet stems as they develop and search for the light. Grown commercially in large dark sheds in the Yorkshire rhubarb triangle - between Wakefield,
Leeds and Morley - this wonderful vegetable (classed as a fruit for tax reasons) can also be divided up this month if you have a large overgrown patch. Happy Gardening
Until next time, happy gardening ,
Lee .

Rossington Parish Council The Beer Festival scheduled for Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th October is well advanced with 28 beers from 14 breweries expected. There are 13 excellent live bands booked to keep everyone entertained with the usual high class burger van and a jacket potato man as well to keep everyone fed. There will be some kiddie’s entertainment on Saturday afternoon as well as a face painter. Don’t forget entrance is free. Beer is £3.00 per pint as is lager and cider. It runs from 4.00pm to 11.00pm on Friday 3rd October and from 12.00 to 11.00pm on Saturday 4th October – don’t miss it. Remember it is held inside a giant heated Marquee 140 foot long and 50 foot wide, so even if it rains the fun and games will be dry and warm. 4.00pm to 11.00pm on Friday 3rd October and from 12.00 to 11.00pm on Saturday 4th October and free entrance. Halfway through the financial year we have to look at our financial position and decide where we are and what we have to do to ensure we have enough money to pay for everything we do and for the wages for our staff. One of the problems we have this year is that the South Yorkshire Pension Fund have put up the contribution enormously, without any prior warning, and we have to pay them with no choice at all about it. They have been in trouble for a few years now and should have taken action three or four years ago when the deficit they have (to pay future pensions) should have been addressed. This coupled with the slowness in developing the iPort (Inland Port) which we expected much earlier in the year has resulted in the need to cut back a bit. We shall keep everyone informed of what we will be doing and what we intend to save money on. We don’t really want to do anything that would affect the Opportunity Centre that get jobs for people or anything that reduces anti-social behaviour, so the options are limited.
£1.00 children 6 to 15, 5’s and under free. For serious health and safety reasons the field gates will be locked. Please turn up early to avoid the rush. We had two Project meetings during the last month, at one we discussed the Party in the Park and what lessons we could learn (don’t have on a day when there is torrential rain). We discussed at both meetings the October Beer festival and the Bonfire night firework show and had a discussion regarding our two Christmas events (to be continued). Back in the swing of things with the Parish Council Meeting tonight we had September’s meeting at which we discussed FARRRS, mention elsewhere in this magazine, we had a report on the Party in the Park from Carol Beaumont which was altogether favourable and positive with the exception of the person who picked the only rainy day in July, not only that the only day this summer with absolutely torrential rains. We also discussed the feasibility of paying for the upkeep of the toilets which for the number of times they are used may be looked on as expensive. Spending a penny has never been so expensive. It was good to see fresh faces in the public gallery and a good turnout.
Richard Cooper-Holmes Chairman, Rossington Parish Council
Bonfire Night will be as adventurous as last year with the Bonfire being lit at 5.30pm or so, live music from 6.00pm to 7.30pm, then the spectacular sound and fireworks display, then live music until 9.00pm. There will be plenty of food stalls and market stalls to keep everyone fed and the usual beverages hot and cold from the Welfare. The gates open at 4.30pm and the charges are £2.00 adults, 26

Rossington Councillor’s Update Up to the end of July the weather was wonderful, with the exception of ‘Party in the Park’ day, August was disappointing cool-ish and damp. Well, as they say, there’s always next year! I hope we have a good September.
Radburn Road TARA applied and got a grant from Recycoal for a bus trip to Bridlington and it was a huge success enjoyed by all. I managed to find a fish and chip café that served me the best cooked fish I have ever had, even better than the Magpie Café in Whitby and Harry Ramsden’s at its’ best. So thank you Radburn TARA for organising the trip and Recycoal for their generosity. The library is going from success to success and is building up a significant customer base. However a few more volunteers would not go amiss. If you have a few hours spare each week, why not volunteer to help out in the library? Training will be given for this very satisfying job. I have had in the last few days a comprehensive update on FARRRS. I shall pass on a few main points; the expected completion date is January 2016, with the M18 to Bankwood section expected to be open by January 2015. This will allow the start of the iPort (Inland Port) and house building on the old colliery site by early 2015 (the remediation (cleaning up) of the site by October 2014). 40 potential occupiers have visited the site in midSeptember. Verdion, the new name of the builders of the iPort also had a site visit with their letting agents. One bridge is in place and the others are in preparation with the Torne Bridge near West End Lane almost completed. As the work on the new junction at Parrots Corner starts there will be little traffic problems up to spring 2015, but some congestions is expected then. The FARRRS Phase 2 preparation and feasibility work is progressing. The environmental and topographical surveys are currently taking place and various alignment options are being 32
ROSSINGTON TODAY
developed. A planning application will go in early next year. Community consultations are hoped to be held in October and, subject to funding and statutory approvals work should start on the road in mid-2016. I have only had one meeting of note, The Community and Environment Scrutiny Panel met to discuss waste and recycling and will look at in depth methods of collecting our recyclable waste and how to increase levels of recycling. Every tonne of waste recycled instead of going to landfill saves the Council and the ratepayers £81 in landfill taxes. We are very good at the moment with over 80% of us recycling, but we need more, not just in the percentage recycling, but those 80% recycling everything, not just some of it. The East Coast Mainline Crossing Saga goes on and on. A further consultation will take place in October with everyone in the village being notified this time, not just a luck few. At the first consultation it basically was 20% for a footbridge where the crossing is now, 20% for a footbridge 60m north and 60% for a road bridge. Unfortunately this would result in 15 houses being demolished. I had a meeting with Council Officers and Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Communities regarding the Market Place and it was agreed that something needed doing, but the plans put forward were unacceptable in the eyes of Joe and Mayor Ros Jones. Joe agreed that the team that runs Doncaster and Mexborough markets will take over the running of our market and they will put in new plans for refurbishment. I await with anticipation! Kindest Regards
Richard Cooper-Holmes

Rossington Main Cricket Club The season is drawing to a close and everyone involved with Rossington Cricket Club can look back on the 2014 season with a good degree of satisfaction. The 1st XI have enjoyed a strong campaign in Division 3 of the Pontefract League. They have managed to consolidate their position following promotion last year. Consistency has been a bit of an issue but there have been a number of victories to savour. Nick Ashton gave an exhibition of seam bowling against Normanton which produced 6 wickets including a memorable hat-trick. The 2nds have had a mixed season. There have been good performances laced with the disappointment of not always being able to fulfil fixtures. Junior players have developed well though and this has been a real positive of the season. The Sunday XI have enjoyed a strong campaign
that saw them remain right in the promotion hunt until late August. Although the side faltered slightly in the latter games; the season will provide an encouraging springboard into 2015 and is a great improvement on last year where the side finished bottom in the division. As ever Rossington Cricket Club are looking for new players young and old and of any ability for the 2015 season and beyond. Anybody interested in playing should contact club treasurer Steve Groves on 07548125185 for more details. The annual presentation night will be held at the Rossington Welfare on Saturday the 15th November starting at 7:30. The night includes a disco and all are welcome to join us in toasting the achievements of 2014. T

Community Dementia Friends Support Caring for someone with dementia can be a long, stressful, and intensely emotional journey. But you're not alone. In the UK, there are about 800,000 people living with dementia, and millions of others around the world. As a caregiving you can make the biggest difference to your loved one's quality of life. That is a remarkable gift. However, caregiving can also become overwhelming. As your loved one's cognitive, physical, and functional abilities diminish over a period of years, it's easy to neglect your own health and well-being. The burden of caregiving can put you at increased risk for significant health problems you could experience depression, stress, and as a caregiver you may at some time experience sadness, anxiety, loneliness, and exhaustion Seeking help and support along the way is not a luxury for caregivers; it's a necessity. However, there are strategies that can help make the caregiving journey as rewarding as it is challenging. Learning all you can about what is happening and what to expect on the dementia journey will not only help your loved one, but is also the first step towards protecting your own physical health. Benefits of attending one of the Community Dementia Friends Support groups below maybe:-
• an opportunity to share information • a chance to meet other people with dementia and their carers • sharing experiences and resolutions to problems • emotional and practical support • information and sign posting about local services • an opportunity of joining in activities

Scoot Safely Indoor Car I am one of many mobility scooter drivers in South Yorkshire. A friend of mine who is an Officer in the Doncaster 50Plus was recently severely injured by a Scooter like mine. She is listed as one of the statistics below. We have persuaded the South Yorkshire Partnership and Parkgate Mobility to put on their excellent two hour course which has the support of the Police, in Rossington at the Holmescarr Community Centre on Friday 21st November 2014 beginning at 1pm.
The course is free of charge. Scooters are being provided for Participants by Parkgate Mobility. There has been a lot of adverse publicity aimed at poor scooter drivers. This course will encourage drivers to drive with more consideration for pedestrians and other road users; the Law and third party insurance will be explained.

There is time for your group to organise transport to get you to the Holmescarr Community Centre in Grange Lane Rossington DN11 0LP and back. If you have difficulties, please let us know at the contact points below. There are, at present, no plans to put on this course elsewhere in Doncaster so please think positively about getting your group lined up to join on this experiment of trying to get Doncastrians to one place to share in tackling a common interest.
